  1. Proud to have my mix involved in this; well put-together. I was honestly thinking of comebacks or ways to disagree or point out something you missed or oversimplified the whole time I was watching, but every time I thought I had something... you covered it. So, seriously,
  2. Not my cup of tea; with both their second and now third album as well, they seem intent on squashing the style/execution laid down in Dummy and embarking on some (imo silly) quest to prove that they have more substance/soul/whatever. Dummy was a great album. It virtually established an entire genre, and remains probably the best example of that genre taking song form in a fashion that was accessible without being too familiar. That they seem so intent on moving away from it to me seems rather juvenile, actually, as if they feel they have something to prove. I can't argue that the album achieves an atmosphere, and if that's what they're intent on doing, they've accomplished that goal at least. But my appreciation for the band always stemmed from the way they combined both atmosphere AND songwriting, and in my opinion, the songwriting here has been relegated to third-class status and sent to the back of the bus.
  3. Nice. Also, nice ESQ1... reminds me that I need to try this VSTi sometime: http://www.buchty.net/ensoniq/
  4. One option would be to save some serious $$$ and get a plain old Motif 8, or if you don't need the keys, Motif 6. I bought my Motif 6 back with the introduction of the Motif series, for something like $1600 if I recall, and you can now get them for... $650-700 used, good condition. If you're all about loading your own sounds and what not, checking out Alesis HD workstations might not be the worst idea, as they're pretty cheap... now. Can't vouch for 'em at all, just tossing that out there. Bottom line, if you're gonna take it to a lot of gigs, I wouldn't get the shnazziest, most expensive kit available. I'd get something sturdy that does what you need and no more and that wouldn't set you back a ton if got beer thrown at it by inebriated audience members. Then again, I don't know what type of gigs these are...
  5. I actually found out it was nearing release from (gasp!) an online ad on last.fm... Haven't heard it yet, but will take a listen tonight and see what I think...
  6. Someone knows his shit; nice. My DLP looks fine to me; for the sake of clarification, though, OLED can both be used as a display technology itself (competitor to LCD, longer-lasting), but also as the "bulb" for DLP projection sets, which is what I was referring to. I personally love my Samsung DLP, but it's bulb-based, and eventually that bulb will die. With DLPs powered by OLED lighting, that's basically no longer a problem.
  7. Well... it's pretty pixelated, too. Unless you're running GENS with eagle or 2xsai enabled on a PC @ 1920x1080. *THEN* it's awesome. I'll just offer this advice on this topic: to me, projector vs. LCD/Plasma/DLP isn't really the issue. If I'm spending that much on a TV, I want something that's not going to be obsolete for awhile and, especially at such large display sizes, captures detail as well. HDTV is gonna be around for a good long while, and 1080p is as high as it goes, so my standard advice is to always get something that natively supports 1080p. For LCDs, that doesn't mean downsampling, that means enough pixels to display a full 1080p signal. Projectors... aren't really there yet on HDTV, or rather, the ones that are are massively expensive. My advice? Bang for buck, I like DLPs. Especially the new OLED driven DLPs, where the bulb can't go bad because there isn't one. Samsung all the way. Yes, the DLPs aren't as thin as LCD and Plasma so you can't wall-mount them above your fireplace, which always seemed stupid ergonomically to me, anyways, but that extra foot or so of depth is saving you $500-$1000 or more, and dead pixels aren't an issue. Just my two cents; people are passionate about A/V gear, and will generally disagree about even the simplest of advice, but I thought I'd share mine nonetheless.
  8. Yeah I douched out on that... sorry. I thought it was May and that you'd send some sort of update, but Larry said it was March? Congrats either way, and shame on me for massive fail. Thanks for updating... I'd love to be involved BUT at the moment I've got obligations to Doom 2, DKC2, AND the website for Tales project and would feel bad committing to anything until I make good on that shizz. Should be soon(ish) on some of that, so don't count me out!
  9. In general I don't have a problem with recruitment threads, especially from people who are relatively established in the community (like Joe) and have a proven track record of success (again, like Joe)...However, I kinda have an issue with secretive, "we'll fill you in once you're on board" recruitment threads being posted here. Even with someone established, like Joe, if neither myself nor any of the moderators know what's going on, it could be anything. Furthermore I feel like projects should either be secretive or not... if you're working on something you don't wanna share with the community until the release, that's fine, but the whole halfway thing of making a public recruitment thread for a secret project rubs me the wrong way. Call me crazy, here, but I'd really prefer more details be provided if this thread's going to continue.
  10. That's really damn cool - all the more so for me, I suppose, since it was my mix, but cool even if it weren't.
  11. The Talent hasn't submitted a ReMix in over two years; The People grow restless...
  12. Agreed. There was a thread and I spoke with Sam on both IRC and gchat; seems to me you might be uninformed. What I described in the writeup was very... diplomatically phrased, relative to the frustration and amount of time involved in dealing with dramarama on my end. Sam's banned from both the forums and IRC at the moment, and I'm in the weird position of posting the music of an artist who's banned from the site. I thought it warranted some form of comment; petty and obvious are the repeated, incessant attacks on Jill's website (and other sites, including this one), not my measured response to them. At any rate, your message is hypocritical, because if it was petty of me in the first place, it was equally petty of you to point out the pettiness on a mix review thread. As opposed to a PM, like you suggest. Oops++.
  13. That should have worked... I'll look into it, sorry for the inconvenience.
  14. It's clear to me from our 404 logs that some people LOVE typing in URLs manually. Even much longer ones. I can do this redirect; I've been thinking of doing some other redirects of this nature, for instances when folks forget a trailing slash, etc., so it's in keeping with that intention.
  15. Well, last Xmas we asked users to donate to one of 3-4 charities; even if it means losing out on funding we need, I'm a bit more comfortable using the winter holidays to encourage donations to worthwhile charities & causes other than OCR. If we can do a fundraiser like this every April with the same degree of success, we should be really solid. Nowhere near solid enough for this to be my fulltime job or anything like that - none of the money goes towards my time at all, presently - but enough so that I'm not losing sleep over declining google ads, etc.
