I guess I'm open to it... actually, vb 3.7 allows for thread tagging, and since each mix has a dedicated review thread, we could simply cross-reference those tags to the mixes and bam... or do something custom if for some reason that didn't work. It'd need to be moderated heavily... In terms of developing anything separate, like Josh did, give me some time; we're doing a LOT of development this year in particular that should start seeing the light of day Q4.

OCR01751 - Kirby's Dream Land 2 "Puffball Promenade"
djpretzel replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Good call, fixed the writeup. Sometimes I intentionally make mistakes like these to remind everyone that I'm human and to test reader attentiveness and what not -
Really. I mean, just for ONCE I'd like to see someone driving around in a tricked out Civic with a spoiler five times too big, crappy flame/dragon artwork on the side, and some MASSIVE PLASMA TWEETERS with PIEZOELECTRIC SUPERTWEETERS, blasting Mariah as she was truly meant to be heard, achieving new levels of canine discomfort. Let's put the EQ back in EQUALITY!

First: Thanks! Second: http://everything2.com/e2node/Bart%25F3k%2520pizzicato There's a description of the Bartók pizzicato that explains what's going on... pretty cool, too, and cites the more modern usage.

OverClocked ReMix Design ?'s and Issues
djpretzel replied to Liontamer's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
Fixed. Yeah, we need a dedicated forum for site issues/feedback imo. Working on it! -
Fair enough, but I guess I'm just far more interested in specifics... it's easy to say streamline this, automate that, etc., but we've got an existing infrastructure based on vbulletin, wiki, etc. and I'm always interested in the solution that makes the most sense, is easiest to maintain, and truly represents a step forward. Sometimes that means we move a bit slower, but it also ensures the site as a whole is maintainable. At any rate, I don't mind constructive criticism, and I even agree with you, it's just that it had already been said, and chiming in to echo the sentiment is less helpful than specific recommendations.

Well, that's just it - it's "glorified," exactly as you say. A lot of folks spend days/years on every last little AJAXified wikitastic meta-moderated doodad they can add, but ultimately, sites like OCR are about content. We've never really dropped the ball there, in my opinion, and we've been around since 1999, so whether it's web 1.0, 2.0, or 5.0, I feel like the core mission of the site has been, is, and will continue to be met. We'll work on the WIP forums and the submission process, but we've got other priorities as well. The very nature of running a website is playing a constant game of catch-up - it's the Internet. I'd add that I believe it's important to build on a foundation rather than throwing everything out over and over again. A more advanced WIP/submission system can perhaps offer the best of both worlds, but it'll be a lot of work, and if all you're going to contribute to that is "OMG U SHOULD BE MORE WEB 2.0," that's not particularly helpful.

Retro Remix Revue (New Album Coming Soon)
djpretzel replied to gamermcchester's topic in General Discussion
Probably means we're doing something right. Honesty, joe can brush it off (and probably should), but when he says something specific that I disagree with on some other forum I don't show up and reiterate yet again how I disagree with the entire way he does things. It's bad form. You can't simultaneously want to come off as this mellow dude who'd be cool to share a beer with and then, whenever you don't like something specific, get on a soapbox and pontificate. That being said, samples from the album sound pretty good to me. I still find unlicensed, commercial game mix albums problematic, but Mustin's points about the reality of licensing, especially with Nintendo, are important to remember. I think anyone doing this should at least try to make plenty of samples, preferably entire tracks, available free of charge, and use album purchases as a means of fans expressing support and not of obtaining the music in the first place. -
Yeah, WIPs / non-OC ReMixes will always be beneath actual ReMixes in terms of placement, but they're already on the front page. With some trickery, we could potentially get them showing up on game detail pages and/or remixer pages, but Shariq's correct in that most good solutions require software development. At the moment I'm working on some other stuff in that arena - very, very hard - but I guess what's important is that I'm really open to this idea and hopefully this year or early next we can start implementing some of this.

Retro Remix Revue (New Album Coming Soon)
djpretzel replied to gamermcchester's topic in General Discussion
Is there really any way to get you RIGHT? Statements like the above are "soulless" and are what discredit you in my personal opinion... you show up and make blanket statements calling the majority of the music here soulless and saying it lacks a spark, only because people are criticizing an album that your friends are sticking up for, and dramarama is surfacing. If any of these (unlicensed, sold-for-profit?) tracks were submitted to OCR, they might very well be posted, for all you know. Stop jumping to conclusions and making blanket judgments just because you disagree with a specific opinion or set of opinions on a specific album. People should be able to like or dislike an individual mix OR album without it degenerating into gross generalizations like the ones you've made. I thought you'd realized this; I guess I was wrong. -
Yeah, totally. Nothing's set in stone yet, but I'm definitely interested in making more resources available to mixers.

Would Rosegarden be a good program for Remixing?
djpretzel replied to Kaz B's topic in Music Composition & Production
Damn, that's right. Well, nothing better for Linux that's free/open source, but yeah, Renoise might be a more polished option for a Linux DAW. -
I've been wondering recently whether SOME of what people like about VGMix (that they don't get with OCR in its current form) couldn't be done here... perhaps a grand reunification of what amounts to two separate communities at the moment isn't feasible or is too MLK JR. "I have a dream"-ish to actually work, but it's nevertheless something I've thought about - whether some of the openness of VGMix couldn't be added to OCR without sacrificing the spirit of our standards one iota. I suppose I envision this as being possible through a reworking/expansion of the WIP forums, with attachment hosting and some means of associating posts there with game records in our database. The risk/downside would be that such WIPs would sorta be "second-class citizens" compared to actual submitted/evaluated OC ReMixes, but it would allow for instant gratification and more exposure for mixes that didn't fit our definition/standards. Nothing more than an idea, and perhaps not even a good one, but either way I want to improve our WIP forums with more features and get more exposure/feedback for artists there...

Would Rosegarden be a good program for Remixing?
djpretzel replied to Kaz B's topic in Music Composition & Production
Nothing better for Linux that I'm aware of... the VST support is rather limited (accomplished through a wrapper, I believe), and that'd be my primary concern if I were considering it. Helpful link: http://ladspavst.linuxaudio.org/ -
