  1. I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. I'm definitely down with running an rRPC2 someday. I'm also cool with getting any kind of feedback regarding how the compo went, my personal performance in running it, so on and so forth. Any suggestions on how I can improve things on my end to make the next compo better. I've already resolved not to repeat the biggest issue I had personally with the way I ran the rRPC, which is to allow more flexibility with deadlines in case multiple competitors are unable to meet them. I shouldn't have handled the first Hero round the way I did, but at least now that I have that experience under my belt, I better understand the consequences of that kind of decision. Not to say it was worth it, but at least I learned something important from it and I won't let that happen again in rRPC2 or any other compos I may run down the road. That said, I thought I'd show off the 'alternate ending' to the rRPC I prepared in case Marth had been the champion instead of Pokey for those of you interested in the narrative of the compo.
  2. The End And thus concludes the first ever ReMix Role-Playing Competition. Congratulations to our champion, Jason Covenant, may you be merciful in your reign over the world. Congratulations to evktalo for putting up a valiant fight as our runner-up. I want to take this time to thank a few people without whom I would not have been able to even get the rRPC off the ground, much less run it: - Darkesword for taking the time to hear my compo pitch, helping me refine/add details to the compo, answering my questions, catching my blunders, letting me be on OCR Talkback to promote the rRPC, and for ultimately greenlighting the compo as a whole. - DragonAvenger for all the support, for listening to me ramble on about ideas before I had even pitched the compo, for recommending a lot of great source themes for the Hero Bracket, and for encouraging me to follow through with the compo idea and actually run it. - OA for creating and updating the bracket graphics on the first page of the rRPC thread. - Liontamer for allowing me to appear on Talkback the second time and for putting up with my compo plug requests on various episodes of the show. - To everyone who took the time to vote and/or offer any kind of feedback on the mixes during the rounds of the compo. - And of course, to each and every one of you who signed up for the compo. The rRPC would not have happened without you, even those of you who were ultimately unable to submit mixes for one reason or another. I’ve learned a great deal from this experience and I hope we’ll be able to do this again someday. Thank you so much for participating!
  3. I'm glad you enjoyed yourself, Supercoolmike. Thanks a lot for the support and for participating. Be sure to stick around OCR, there are other competitions run by more prominent members of the community that generally see a lot more action, particularly the Mega Man and Sonic compos. Take some time to go over the ones that have already ended, they're worth checking out. As for Fallen mixes, while I don't want to do away with the concept altogether, I probably will downsize it in any future rRPCs that I run. Fewer choices to choose from, make my overall pool of hero round sources smaller, that sort of thing. At any rate, I'll worry about that when rRPC2 is actually a thing. On that note, the first ReMix Role-Playing Compo is going to conclude today. Voting is still open for the next four and a half hours, ending at noon Eastern time today. So far we've only had four votes but I know we can do better. It's only two mixes with two short sources to listen to. You can be done in under 15 minutes.
  4. Some thoughts on the final entries of the rRPC. evktalo - Pokey Needs To Go Down: I like what you did with this mix. You made good use of your Marth theme. You managed to implement the Pokey theme despite its sparseness and tweaked the sound of it over the course of the mix to offer more variety. The synths for the Marth theme parts could probably be a little cleaner, but that's more a nitpick on my part than a serious criticism because the sound works just fine. It's a good mix and thank you for all your submissions. Jason Covenant - Pokey the Joker: First off, I've been waiting for you to title one of your Pokey mixes as Pokey the Joker ever since I caught on to your mix title trend. You made excellent use of the Pokey source, which is expected of the one who signed up as Pokey. You managed to make good use of the Marth theme as well. I'm really digging this mix and thank you for all your submissions. Alright guys, there's only about four more days left of voting for the finals of the rRPC. And don't forget to share some thoughts on the mixes here in the thread.
  5. and have submitted their mixes so voting for the rRPC Finals is now open! You may download the round’s zip folder here. Voting may be done in the rRPC Social Group and will remain open until noon EST on Monday, August 18. If you want to post reviews of the round’s tracks, do so in a single post in this thread.I wish the best of luck to our two Finalists.
  6. Just send it in as soon as you are able today. I'll be at my job during the usual deadline today so you've got two or three extra hours there. So I guess aim for 3 if you need a specific deadline to shoot for. Please include any lyrics in the PM. Thanks a lot and I'm looking forward to hearing what you've got.
  7. I don't usually get affected by news of celebrity deaths, but Robin Williams was one of my favorite actors/comedians, especially when I was a kid. The news really hit me like a sucker punch, didn't even see it coming. My condolences to the family.
  8. Alright, I'll extend the deadline to tomorrow. Just send me the music when it's ready and I'll do my part after I get out of work.
  9. I'm going to feel so bad for Larry when he realizes that we've barely understood a single thing he's said the whole Talkback.
  10. I really want to make it this time after watching some of the live streams off Twitch last year and just hearing about the experience in general.
  11. Well, there's always next year (or whenever another rRPC may take place). In the meantime though, feel free to join the rRPC Social Group and vote on who you think should win the compo when voting opens next week.
  12. That's totally understandable. I appreciate that you were able to submit a Fallen mix earlier in the compo. And when you have time in the future, there's no reason you can't do something with those sources for your own sake. Maybe you'll have something that'll be posted on the OCR homepage someday. Ugh, I can't believe I was that careless. The finalists will be mixing their themes combined with their opponent's theme. So basically carrying on the Villain bracket approach. I know it's stated somewhere in the opening post of the compo but I still should have remembered to include one of the most important parts of the round in the finals post. I'll edit that in. Sorry about that.
  13. The Finals: The Fate of the World First off, congratulations to our Villain finalist: Jason Covenant! Also congratulations to Ethan Rex and Ghetto Lee Lewis for making it to the semis. The rRPC is nearing its end as the Finals are now set to begin. The final battle will pit evktalo’s Marth against Jason Covenant’s Pokey. For this final battle, the participants must use the character theme they signed up with and mix that with their opponent's theme. The Summon System is no longer available. Also, the tracks should be titled in the same format as was used in the Villain Bracket. Finalists will have until noon EST on Monday, August 11 to submit their mixes to me. Voting to determine the winner of the ReMix Role-Playing Competition will then take place for the following week. The final battle is upon us. Will good prevail over evil or will the world be engulfed in darkness? Best of luck to the Finalists!
  14. Some thoughts on the villain side of the semis. Jason Covenant - Pokey the Stroker The intro gives me the mental image of the start of an old timey black and white film. Lyrics are pretty catchy. Sherincal's theme is more predominant but I think I can hear Pokey's theme in the background and in the percussion at the end. It's a good piece. Ghetto Lee Lewis - Poking Violation Instrumental Version I like the feel of this mix. I'm curious how the vocal version would sound. Just like with Jason's mix, Sherincal's theme makes up the bulk of this track, but I did hear a little Pokey in there. I hope you follow this up with a vocal version soon. So, there's only about two and a half hours to go before the voting period closes on the semifinals. If you haven't voted yet, now would be the time to do it. The finals will begin after I have tallied the votes and determined who will be our final boss. Thank you very much for your submissions everyone. Edit: Almost forgot, if any of the Fallen were working on bonus round mixes, that deadline is also at noon EST today. Since no one has said a word about that, I'm assuming interest was not very high. If any of the Fallen are interested in doing a boss battle theme mix, let me know and I'll extend that deadline until the finals submission date. Otherwise we'll just leave it at that and focus strictly on finals.
  15. Just got back from seeing the movie myself. Absolutely loved it. I'll probably catch it again while it's still in theaters.
  16. Mario, Zelda, Chrono Trigger, Donkey Kong Country, Mega Man, Final Fantasy IV or VI (and expand on that if they like them), Capcom Disney games like Ducktales, and classic Sonic all come to mind.
  17. Just a friendly reminder for everyone to vote in the current round that will decide our second finalist.
  18. The lyrics to Jason Covenant's mix have been added to the zip folder. For anyone who has already downloaded the music, the lyrics are:
  19. Congratulations to our finalist on the Hero Bracket: evktalo! Voting for the Villain Bracket side of the Semifinals is now open! You may download the round’s zip folder here. Voting may be done in the rRPC Social Group and will remain open until noon EST on Monday, August 4. If you want to post reviews of the round’s tracks, do so in a single post in this thread. For easy access to the source themes used in each round, check out the rRPC Roster. I do still need the lyrics for Jason Covenant's track. I will add those to the zip folder after he has turned them in to me.
  20. Just a reminder for everyone to vote on the two tracks on the Hero Bracket. Deadline is tomorrow at noon EST. Here are some thoughts I have on the submissions this week. Ethan Rex - Super Chrono Kart X: First off, I was not expecting anyone to make a mix in a style like this. Makes me want someone to mod Frog into Super Mario Kart and play this for a course. On to the mix, as you've already noted, it is pretty short but you do use both sources. It's a fun and creative mix idea though the sound quality, while being faithful to Super Mario Kart's style, is a bit lower than I'd prefer. I did enjoy it, nicely done. evktalo - The Point of No Refund: Glad to see the extended deadline served you well. I'm liking what you came up with. I think the electronic instrumentation starting around the 1:25 point are a bit on the harsh side. Definitely liking where you're going with it, and from what you've said before, it sounded like you still had other ideas to implement into it, so I look forward to hearing a finalized version someday. Thanks a lot for submitting guys. Looking forward to getting the Villains' tracks tomorrow.
  21. I am liking the prospect of an NES tribute album. A lot of the big guns of the system (Mario, Zelda, Kirby, etc.) are already listed, but I'd like to throw a few title names out there that might get overlooked. StarTropics Shatterhand Contra Battletoads Crystalis Capcom's Disney games like Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers or Darkwing Duck Dragon Quest/Warrior Ninja Gaiden There's plenty of other good stuff out there on the NES, but these are what came to mind first.
  22. Internet's working again. How're you faring Jason? Any updates on the Villain side of the semis?
