  1. I've been weighing my options on how best to proceed with the current situation. If we can get one more person on board to get the total participants up to 12, we can split everyone between the two brackets evenly. I'm thinking of having round one be three two-person match ups, then round two will be two three-person matches split between whoever won/lost round one, and round three will have the two winners of round two paired up and everyone else will be sorted either in pairs or into a lump group depending on the bracket or if anyone dropped out by this point. The winner of the two-person match up in round three will be a finalist. To simplify my idea, let's say we have in round 1: A vs B, C vs D, and E vs F. A, C, and E all win their rounds so in round 2, A, C, and E will go against each other in a three-way round, while B, D, and F go against each other as well. Now let's say A and F are the winners of round 2, so they will be paired up in round 3 as semi-finalists, while B, C, D, and E get shuffled into pairs or otherwise grouped up depending on which bracket they're in and if all four of them are still able to participate. Now let's say F manages to end A's win streak and then becomes the finalist for F's bracket, F would then go against the opposing bracket's finalist in the last round. It's not a perfect plan and there's a little more to it on my end that I cannot go into without revealing secrets like round source types. I was considering implementing a point system of some kind, but with this approach, the winners and losers of each match up get separated each time so points seem a bit redundant. One of the things I do like about this approach is that it does away with eliminations until the finals, and it gives people who did not win the first round a chance to still come out on top. Also, I do want to clarify, just because I'm grouping up people into three-way match-ups does not mean I'm intending for everyone to have to mix more than two sources a round. I may give you the option to do so depending on the situation, but it won't be a requirement by any means. Let me know if you spot any glaring issues with this approach, or any general concerns. Also, if you've signed up and haven't picked a side yet, there's only room for one more hero if we settle for 12 participants, so if that's relevant to you, you may want to make that claim if you're leaning that way. Also, @Sir_NutS and @Tuberz McGee, if you guys are still interested in joining in, please let me know as soon as possible. If we wind up with an odd number of people on board, I'll have to make one of the round 1 match-ups a three-way, split a three-way match up in round 2 into two pairs, and then have the semi-final match-up be with three people as well (all this for just one of the brackets).
  2. Yeah, the delay was probably for the best overall. Thanks for the suggestions Mindwanderer, I'll keep those in mind in case it becomes necessary to start without the full roster. If anyone can think of anyone else who might be interested in the compo, feel free to summon them the way Chernabogue did earlier. Some of them seemed interested before but never followed up. Just five more people is all we need to make this happen.
  3. I have decided that since we did not get enough people to sign up by my original cut off point, I am going to extend the deadline for signing up for the rRPC by another week. Hopefully more people take an interest or decide they have enough time to join in during that period. Sorry for the delay everyone.
  4. Great to have you on board Yami. I had actually forgotten that Symphony of the Night is an action RPG so I wound up looking that up to make sure it was eligible. I would like you to PM those to me as soon as you can so it's all official and with everyone else's entries. If you have any preference on which bracket you want to be in, let me know there as well. That makes 11 people signed up. Five more openings are left. If you're interested in entering, now is the time to do it.
  5. Dawn of the Final Day. Today is the last day of my intended sign up period for the rRPC. Still at six open slots including Mike's entry though he hasn't messaged me with it yet. For anyone who has been following along but have not made up your mind yet, today would be the day to do it. The compo would definitely work best with the full roster of 16, but I do think it's feasible to pull off with 12 or 14 depending on how everyone's divided up. With 12 people split evenly between both sides (6 heroes and 6 villains), round 1 would then be a series of 3-way match ups with the lowest scoring participant dropped before round 2. In this case, I would provide the villains with a source from my list of possible party members so that we don't run the risk of rounds 1 and 2 being the same combination of themes remixed both times. I suppose you could also incorporate one of your opponents' character themes as well, but that would be optional. With 14 people, I would need one of the brackets to be filled up and that bracket would then proceed as I had originally planned. Then whichever bracket is two members short will be set up like I described in the 12 person scenario. If the villains are low, I'll provide sources for round 1. My biggest concern about doing 3-way match ups is what to do in the event of a second place tie. I wouldn't want to settle something like that with something completely random like flipping a coin or rolling a die. I suppose all three could advance to round 2 and make that be a double-elimination round, plus we get a little more music going that route. I'm mostly just thinking out loud here and I would appreciate any input you have on the situation. There could be something I'm overlooking, or maybe you would rather delay things another week to give more people a chance to sign up and fill out the roster. I want to have a full roster and I'm definitely willing to extend the sign up period, but I also want to do what works best for everyone. At any rate, if you've been on the fence about signing up, today would be the day to make your move. Just be sure to follow the sign up instructions in the opening post and PM your picks to me.
  6. Great to have you on board @Supercoolmike. Just be sure to send that to me via PM in order to make it official.
  7. Sorry to hear that Anorax. Your characters wouldn't have to be anyone even remotely obscure or anything you know. Surely you've had some experience with at least one Final Fantasy? If you're absolutely sure you're out, thank you for considering entering and I hope you follow along. So we've got two more days left for my intended sign-up period. Right now we've got five heroes (Garpocalypse, Touchstone, Ghetto Lee Lewis, Xenonetix, and alfredofreak), two villains (Timothy William and Ronald Poe), and two undecideds (Chernabogue and HoboKa). Over halfway to a full roster so I'm feeling pretty good about that. We'll see how things go over the weekend. Ideally we'll get enough last minute people to fill out the roster and everything can proceed as planned.
  8. I sent alfredofreak a message about the choices submitted so it's being addressed. I guess I wasn't clear enough about this being an RPG character compo. I'm definitely glad people are signing up though.
  9. Just in time for summer vacation! Seriously though, this is great news. I'm looking forward to hearing what you've changed since MAGFest.
  10. I sent Xenonetix a message about his lists so I'm sure he'll submit a new one soon. Definitely glad to see more interest in the compo, even if the timing is bad for a lot of people. I know Wildfire told me on Facebook that the timing wasn't good for her either. Jason Covenant is busy as well and some other people I reached out to so far haven't responded yet. Been going through my last compo's roster and reaching out to people from that, a couple at a time. Thanks a lot for getting the word out guys and to everyone that stopped in to see what this is all about.
  11. I just finished looking at some WIP signature images for the compo provided by Odai. I like the direction he's going with them and I think you will too. We're presently at six people on board with ten open spots remaining. I'm doing what I can to find more people to join in. If any of you know anyone you think would want to participate, feel free to reach out to them about it. At the present rate, we might not make it to 16 people, so the options as I see them are to either extend the sign ups deadline by another week (the most likely option), or to go with everyone we manage to have and make some changes to adjust for the lower turnout. Maybe drop the brackets in favor of a point-based system with the highest scoring hero and villain after round 3 advancing to the finals?
  12. Thanks a lot for signing up guys. So far we've got five people out of hopefully 16 signed up officially, with two heroes and two villains and one undecided at present. Sign ups are open for another week yet so if you're interested, pick out some heroes or villains and send me your lists. It does not count because Mario's Theme originated from a game that's not an RPG. Given the unlikelihood of anyone else picking your first choice, I won't ask you to submit a replacement third choice.
  13. How often does that actually happen? All the characters who come to mind for me off the top of my head are either the main characters themselves, or are so minor that they don't really have a theme. That could possibly fall into spoiler territory as well, depending on the game and the situation, particularly regarding sacrificing themselves. At any rate, the reason I stress hero characters be playable is that the pool of options under that criteria is already huge. Many RPGs I've played or seen played to completion on YouTube have fairly sizable casts and many of those playable characters have their own theme music. However, there usually aren't as many villains and in a lot of cases, those villains actually share the same theme music. Take Final Fantasy VI for example, that game has a cast of 14 playable characters (excluding guests like Banon, though I am willing to accept guests if they are important enough to have their own theme) with at least 13 themes between them (Edgar and Sabin share theirs). But on the villains' side, you basically have Kefka, Emperor Gestahl, and Ultros and that's pretty much it, maybe the Statues/Warring Triad but they don't even have dialogue. My point is that there are already far more hero options than villain ones without adding in NPCs that aid them along the way. I will make a note of that though as that does sound like an interesting idea to implement in a future rRPC, replace the Party System with something that gives characters an assisting NPC like Elizabeth from Persona 3. It probably wasn't your intention there but thank you for giving me that idea Odai. And I do appreciate your suggestions, I hope I didn't come off as condescending or anything. I want this compo to be as enjoyable for everyone involved as possible, and I will answer anyone's questions regarding character eligibility to the best of my ability.
  14. Sign-ups for the rRPC 2016 are now open! I have modified the rules so that if you already know what bracket you want to be in, you only have to submit a list for that bracket as long as the eight available slots are not filled. For anyone undecided or indifferent, please submit lists for both sides. Here are the modified rules: Thank you to everyone who has taken an interest in the rRPC 2016 and I look forward to seeing what you all sign up with.
  15. As much as I would like to allow it, I cannot accept Elizabeth as she is not a playable hero. The pool of possible hero choices is already extremely large so there is no need to include NPCs into the mix there. I do agree with your sentiment that it'd be great to have some Persona representation this year. You do bring up a good point I've been wrestling with as I was finalizing the rules for signing up. Should people who want to be in a specific bracket that has room for them have to provide a list for the opposing bracket? Honestly, in that kind of situation, it does feel unnecessary. For anyone who either does not care or hasn't decided at the time of signing up which bracket they want to be in should still provide both lists. I do not mind amending the rules with this change if no one has any issues with that. I'll leave it open for discussion and act accordingly before the sign-ups open.
  16. Signing up will be up to you. The issue isn't about Xehanort's theme or even about the joke. It's just that you weren't following instructions. You are more than welcome to join and Xehanort can be your top choice, but please follow the rules of the compo, not just for signing up, but for the compo as a whole.
  17. It is as Anorax said, Ronald Poe. Sign-ups will begin on May 2nd at around noon Eastern time. I'll post in this thread at that time to make it official. Also, in case it isn't clear why I'm requesting people choose more than one character when they sign up, it is so that in the event that your first choice is already picked as a first choice by someone else, you then have another character already provided to fall back on. It was never an issue in the previous rRPC so I'm not overly worried about it, it's more of a precaution than anything. Poe's post did bring something to my attention I don't think I mentioned in the OP. People who are used to participating in compos on OCR would probably do this on their own anyway, but it would be a great time saver for me if everyone provided YouTube links to your sources when you sign up. That all said, I'm glad to see people are looking forward to this. I know I'm eager to see what characters/sources everyone picks.

Sign-ups for the ReMix Role-Playing Competition 2016 (rRPC 2016) will begin on Monday, May 2nd at noon Eastern time and will last until midnight on Sunday, May 22nd. The rRPC 2016 is a ReMix competition that focuses on heroes and villains from various RPGs. As the heroes embark on a quest to save the world, the villains will be busy fighting each other to determine who among them will reign supreme. For more details about the rRPC 2016 and how to sign up, visit the thread here.
  19. The ReMix Role-Playing Competition 2016 The ReMix Role-Playing Competition 2016 (rRPC 2016) is a ReMix competition in which participants assume the roles of heroes and villains from role-playing games such as Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger, and use those characters’ themes in a series of rounds. Participants will be divided into two brackets, one for hero characters and another for villains. The Hero Bracket will represent the quest of an RPG hero as the participants arrange their character themes with sources associated with events such as visiting a town or exploring a dungeon. The Villain Bracket, however, will directly pit its participants against one another as they combine their own theme choices with their opponent’s. In the end, only one hero and one villain will remain to determine the fate of the land. News: The ReMix Role-Playing Competition 2016 has concluded. Congratulations to our winner, Ghetto Lee Lewis, and to our runner-up, Ronald Poe! I created a spreadsheet that contains YouTube links to all the sources that have been revealed so far. It can be viewed here. Previous rounds: Hero Round One Villain Round One Hero Round Two Villain Round Two Hero Round Three Villain Round Three Final Round Rules: - Participants may select one character theme that they will use for the duration of the competition. If your character has multiple themes associated with them, you must choose only one. - Collaborating with others regardless of whether they are participating or not will not be allowed unless otherwise noted. - After clearing Round One, the Party System will be unlocked, which provides participants with an additional character theme that may be used in place of the theme you signed up with. Participants may not use the party members of their current opponents in their mixes unless otherwise noted. - The Party System is not available during the first round. It will also not be available during the finals. - Voting will be open to everyone and will last one week per round. - There are no restrictions regarding musical styles or genres. However, if you submit a mix with lyrics, please include the lyrics in your submission PM so they can be included with the music for that round. - Be sure to follow the Competitions Code of Conduct, as well as the guidelines for OCR submissions. - Have fun making awesome music! Set-up: - Everyone’s starting positions will be determined randomly before the beginning of the first round of their respective brackets. - Each match-up in the Hero Bracket will be given a randomly determined source track associated with the theme of the round (i.e. town themes, dungeon themes, etc.). Each hero must make an arrangement combining their character’s theme with the provided round theme. Heroes do not use their opponent’s character theme. - In the Villain Bracket, each participant must make an arrangement combining their character’s theme with the theme of their opponent’s character. - Mixes will be due one week after the start of each round. The Party System: The characters selected by the participants are not the only heroes and villains that will appear in the rRPC 2016. After the first round has been cleared, the heroes and villains will cross paths with other characters that will join them on their quests. These character themes will be distributed randomly in the appropriate brackets and may be used in place of the participant’s character theme. Party members will not be allowed in the final round between the Hero and Villain Brackets. Sign-up: - Sign-ups for the rRPC 2016 will last for two weeks beginning on Monday, May 2nd and will end at midnight EST on Sunday, May 15th. - You may sign up by PMing me (FenixDown) a list of 3 characters related to the bracket you wish to enter in (Hero or Villain). Character themes should be listed in order of preference with your first choice at the top of your list. - If you are undecided at the time of signing up or have no preference which bracket you are entered in, please provide a list for each bracket. Anyone who does not make a clear choice by the time sign-ups close will be sorted randomly between the brackets assuming both brackets have available openings. - I would also like the lists to be posted publicly in the thread to give other participants an idea of what character themes are being considered to help reduce any possible conflicts. - Submissions should be typed as [“Game Title” - “Character’s Name” and “Theme Name” - “Hero or Villain”]. - Only RPG characters will be accepted. If you have any questions regarding a character’s eligibility, ask me. - Based on the first rRPC’s turnout, I am aiming to have 16 participants (8 heroes and 8 villains). Voting: Voting will take place in the Public Voting forum. For each round, a thread will be created with a poll for each match-up. Voting will last for one week unless otherwise noted. Everyone is welcome (and encouraged!) to vote regardless of whether you are a participant or not. When voting, the most important thing to consider about each mix is how well it incorporates and arranges the sources used. Production quality and your personal enjoyment of the mixes should also be considered before placing your vote. Participants are free to vote for themselves in their own match-ups. Please do not post your reviews in the voting threads, instead include them in a single post per round in the main compo thread. Music Submission: Please send all entries to me (FenixDown) via PM on the forums with a link to a trustworthy hosting client (like Dropbox or Soundcloud) and I will download your mixes from there. I will only accept submissions sent in WAV format. Please do not send MP3s, I will encode the MP3s myself. All file names must be in the following formats: For Heroes: ReMixer - Mix Title (ReMixer’s Character Name & Round Source Name).wav Example: FenixDown - Tonedeaf Terra (Terra & Tone of the Town).wav For Villains: ReMixer - Mix Title (ReMixer’s Character Name & Opponent’s Character Name).wav Example: DarkeSword - Kefka Beckons (Kefka & Lavos).wav When using a party member, replace your character’s name with the name of the party member. Any mixes that use provided source themes should use the Hero Bracket’s format while any mixes that use two character themes should use the Villain Bracket’s format. You are free to capitalize your name and mix title however you like, but please properly capitalize the character names and source theme titles. I will not accept files that are not named properly, repeat offenders may be disqualified if it becomes a problem. FAQ: What is the schedule for the rRPC 2016? How will the rounds be divided? The first Hero round will begin on Monday, May 23 at 12PM EST and will last for a week. Then on Monday, May 30, the first Villain round will begin and the previous round’s voting will also begin. The two brackets will alternate weeks for mixing (Hero: June/6, June/20; Villain: June/13, June/27) until only one hero and one villain remain. The final round will begin on July 11. The schedule may be subject to change depending on circumstances. I will try to be as flexible and accommodating to people’s needs as I can, so long as it remains fair to the other participants. What games can I select my character theme from? You may select your character theme from any RPG. They can be Japanese RPGs, Western RPGs, Tactical RPGs, Action RPGs; if it’s an RPG and it has music, it should be fine. What is the criteria for what characters I may use? You are free to pick any character you want, as long as they: 1) are a playable hero or a villain from an RPG, and 2) have a theme that is recognizably their own whether in name like Terra's Theme from Final Fantasy VI, or in association like The Red Wings for Cecil from Final Fantasy IV. What if my character changes sides in their game’s story? Which bracket should I submit them in? You should consider how often the character in question is working alongside the heroes of the game opposed to how often they act as an enemy. Characters like that could technically fit in either bracket. Magus from Chrono Trigger would be a good example. Does my villain have to be the final boss of his/her game? While the final boss is usually the main villain of their game, you are not required to pick them if there are other villains available. For example, Sephiroth is the main villain from Final Fantasy VII, but you (or someone else) could just as easily pick Rufus Shinra or Jenova. You could even choose to run as a minor villain like Don Corneo, as long as they have their own theme. How are you going to choose the round source themes for the Hero Bracket? What about party members for the Party System? I will be using a randomizer to decide which match-ups of the Hero Bracket will receive each source track out of a diverse list I have compiled. The same applies to the Party System, I have a fairly large and diverse list of possible characters for each bracket that I will pick party members from at random. What if the character I want to run is a spoiler for his/her game? If simply running a character as a hero or villain is enough to spoil the game they are from, you should consider a different character. I am not a ReMixer but would like to contribute. What can I do to help out? I will definitely be in need of artistic people who can design the brackets and signature images for the participants. We did not have signature images for the first rRPC so that would be nice to have this time. Knowing how to use Photoshop would be a big help. If you are interested, get in touch with me or post in the thread. Getting the word out and bringing in people who might be interested would also be a great way to help.
  20. Loved the album, so glad to finally get to listen to it. So far, after my first time through the album, I'd say my favorite tracks are Lenna's Theme, Mystic Knight, and Summoner. All the tracks are great though, everyone did an awesome job with their music. And I love the new approach to the album art, the cover looks amazing, huge props to rnn for doing a great job with that.
  21. I'm not a participant so you can take or leave my thoughts on the matter if you so choose, but something I noticed in the last compo I ran is that life happens and people fizzle out over time. I had to extend deadlines by days or even a week near the end, and only one person took on any of the added participation opportunities I offered to anyone that lost a round. If it were up to me, I think I would move to wrap things up. Personally, I would go with either 2 or 3, though I do like the idea of 4 if enough people are interested and able to do it. Just some thoughts I had reading MindWanderer's last post, I hope that wasn't viewed as overstepping my bounds or anything. That said, I did cast my vote for the finals today. It was a real tough call, both Wildfire and OA nailed it. I loved the lyrics Wildfire wrote for her entry and I was really feeling it with OA's track as well. Regardless of the outcome, you guys both win in my book. Well done!
  22. I had a great time at MAGFest, overall better than last year. Was fun playing tabletop games with people, checking out some of the performances, beating Battletoads on a projection screen in the game room, checking out the merch tables, cosplaying as Phoenix Wright, hanging out at Stevo's afterwards among other things. It was great seeing so many of you there, whether it was a reunion or meeting for the first time. I'm looking forward to next year. It was a good MAGFest!
  23. Video Games Live: Level 5 is up on Kickstarter. Some of the games to be featured on the album include: Ace Attorney Phoenix Wright, Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Grim Fandango, Ico, and Chrono Cross, with other games waiting in the wings if they meet stretch goals such as: Mother/Earthbound, Okami, Xenogears/saga/blade, and Katamari Damacy. The Kickstarter is already less than $20,000 away from meeting their first goal as of this post. The rewards for the VGL albums have always been generous, but they are stepping it up this time, offering more digital exclusive albums like a Majora's Mask piano album, Top Gear/Horizon Chase OST, collector's editions of Random Encounters' albums, and more. If you're interested in checking out the Kickstarter page, here's the link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1916334303/video-games-live-level-5-album-and-movie
  24. If I had even a shred of musical ability I would sign up myself, but unfortunately I've got nothing there. However, I definitely like MindWanderer's idea for his Castlevania compo. It's got my seal of approval for what that's worth and I hope more people get involved.
  25. I'm not even sure anymore when I first found OCR. I think it was around late 2004-early 2005, I just remember it was DragonAvenger that first linked me to the site. I didn't join the forums until late 2009 though. I do have a lot of memories associated with OCR. In 2009, I delivered a physical copy of the Final Fantasy IV album to Nobuo Uematsu after a Distant Worlds concert on behalf of OA and Deia and everyone else involved with the project. A couple years ago I gave the members of OverClocked University pint glasses with the band's logo engraved on them. Last year during the summer, I ran the ReMix Role-Playing Compo which went fairly well for a first time effort on my part. I also appeared on OCR Talkback a couple times to promote it. I'll have to finalize my plans for the sequel and try to make that happen sometime in 2016. And of course there was MAGFest 13 back in January. Got to meet a lot of people from the community, most of which for the first time. Also finally got to see OCU perform live in person for the first time as well. Those are the biggest things I can think of off the top of my head but there are a lot of things spread out over the years. Too many memories to share them all and I'm looking forward to making more in the coming years.
