  1. You don't unlock moves as far as I know. You can unlock Steve, Alisa and one other character that I forget at the moment. Which makes me wonder, if they release more characters down the road, are you going to have to buy them and then play more to unlock the ones you purchased as well? That would be ridiculous so I hope not.

The ability to increase your stats (Strength, Health and Luck basically) isn't really much of a problem when you're fighting people around the same level as you because they will have attained around the same number of Skill Points as you, but of course they may have allocated them to different stats entirely. I didn't really notice it initially, but good players from previous Tekkens at level 0 who go up against someone who is like level 10 and has evenly distributed their skill points, struggles a bit more than you would expect. This is because the opponent will do more damage, have more health and chances of landing critical hits and rage mode are higher. So if that player manages to land in just a few good combos and a couple lucky throws....it can be over real quick. So if you're good at these games, and are just starting to improve your character, you don't have as much room for slip ups against n00bz as you would have in the past. I can see some people having a problem with this, but for the most part, if you're fighting people around the same level, the RPG elements make the game more interesting.

The only other thing I can see people really not liking, is the "coins" system. You have to spend virtual coins to play arcade mode and online. Arcade coins and Battle coins respectfully. You can only have two Arcade coins at a time, which replenish one per hour and 5 battle coins, which replenish 1 every half hour. There are also "premium tickets" and coins which will work for all modes. Tickets can be earned through in game tasks, coins can be purchased. If you win the battle, you get to keep your premium tokens. So if you want to play hours on end, you'll have to pay unless you're good. I can see the hardcore hating this aspect and I will agree that it's kind of a strange way to monetize the game.

Overall though, I'm having lots of fun with it. I might even pick up Tekken Tag 2 sometime in the next few months. That's probably what Namco is hoping for too.

Yea, free to play is a freaking cancer. :) In a weird way I kinda dig the tokens being used in a similar way as the coin ops of yesteryear but the whole reason I pay 60 bucks up front is because I know i would run up the cost of the game to well over 200 bucks by the time I finish playing it.

Enjoy though and let me know if you pick up TTT2 (and have it on 360). Also keep in mind that i've lost every friend i've made through playing fighting games with them. Online friends i mean. :)

  2. So basically, I'd only have to spend just five bucks if I really want a non-DLC character. If I remain perfectly satisfied with the character I have from the get-go, I'm out nothing.

I'm wondering how this is going to affect defense training though. Spending 4-5 bucks for a character to play might be ok but spending 4-5 bucks on a character just to figure out your counters in a controlled environment is going to suck.

I'm all for more people to play against but I can't help but feel that this free to play stuff is a cancer of the industry. It used to be that I wish I had more money to get the games I wanted to play. Now it's I have too many games to play and not enough time to play them.

Not that I really am able to play them anymore which makes the whole thing alot worse. :)

For the record I think fighting games going to PC would be a horrible thing. Just the suspicion that someone was able to figure out how to knock a few frames off of a punisher or have botted their throw escapes is enough to ruin every match you play. I know some games like SSF4 have already gone to pc but last i checked almost no one plays them.

  3. I thought the golden age of arcade fighters was the 1990s? :<

Just where in the sam-heck did you hear that?

-Fighters are more balanced than ever (no more insanely OP/broken characters like Kabal in MK for instance)

-Online play isn't always perfect but it's far better than waiting at the arcade for someone to show up who knows what they are doing.

-The games themselves are more fluid and more dynamic from over three generations of slowly expanding systems.

-Youtube allows for quick discovery of awesome 14 hit comboage.

-Character customization means you can get everyone half naked if you want to. I do.

-Practice modes have developed. No more spending 75 cents to get one play and hope you discover something new about your character.

-If you win, or lose, someone might call you a scrub. Back in the day I got punched in the arm, backhanded in the chest, and even....screamed at. :?

There's bound to be more but i'm feeling like I could go a few quick rounds in TTT2. :)

    ...but you get the idea.

  4. Keep everything in a single drum midi track until you are sure you won't be changing them up then split them across other midi/audio tracks Kick, Snare, Highhat, Toms Etc. This gives you better control over what you can do. Keeping everything in one track like that can make things easy at first but eventually you'll find it limits you horribly.

-You can't adjust the volumes from console view which means once you bounce to audio you can't adjust the volume of the parts of the kit at all

-Your EQ is going to apply to all parts of the kit. (This is a bad thing)

-You can't use individual sends to set up parallel compression should you want to

-You won't have an easy source for simple transition effects. (reversing a crash)

There's bound to be more but definitely split your drums up once you are near finalizing them.

  5. My faith in fighting games has been low these days.

    Here you go:

    http://www.tekkenzaibatsu.com/forums/

You're living in the golden age of arcade fighters. Get a stick and get to practice (mode). :)

As for tekken online I don't have a PS3 and I already have Tag Tournament 2 that I haven't had much time to play so probably not getting it.

Also have DOA5, SCV, SSF4, VF5FS, and I haven't had any time for those either. I wish this nonstop flow of games I need to play would end already.

  6. Troy Baker? How about Joy Behar? :-P

Ha ha ha ha ha ha...... (ffx laugh)

There's a joke in here somewhere. Still looking for it... :)

It's always easy to blame the voice actors but i think people should be quicker to blame the voice acting directors.

  7. My only hope is that they'll stop driving the series into the ground with their J-Pop crap, ridiculous storylines, awful voice actors, and anything that looks, sounds, or smells anything like Snow from XIII. I want my old FF back.

You know Snow was Troy Baker right? Baker was really the only voice actor I could stand in FFXIII. Well, him and the guy who did Sazh. I thought the chicks were awful for the most part. :)

If SE really wants to do this game right they are going to need Troy for every voice for every character in the game.

    Including the women...

  8. There is a ton of great information in this thread already so I doubt I can add much of anything but one thing I have been trying is mixing with pink noise. You can read up on it here. http://mixingtips.org/forum/mixing-tips-(general)/mixing-with-pink-noise/

Instead of setting your tracks to each other you set it to pink noise one at a time. Solo the instrument you want to set, bring the volume up until you just barely here a peak come above the noise, then move on. I''ve noticed that my drums sound alot better than they did and any EQ'ing you do after is alot more sensitive which could make your snare more prominent.

I don't have any examples up just yet but in my few attempts doing it this way it seems to really have changed the way I work for the better.

  9. I have some absynth collections that came with my budget version of Komplete Elements. They are only unalterable presets that play through Kore Player but many times I stick them in the background to make things feel bigger without them being too noticeable.

Counter melodies are easier to do than some would have you think. I remember reading books on counterpoint when I was in college and getting almost nothing from them. If you are not used to looking at music vertically (note against note from a given moment in the piece) then just loop a small section and improvise on a midi keyboard until you get something that fits with what you have.

    good luck!

  10. I've picked up a few things from East West and I haven't seen a deal from them that is any better than 50% outside of their composer's collection.

Symphonic Orchestra comes with a really good Steinway sample so if you don't already have a decent string library i'd go for that. I have so many different piano patches and samples just from what I've bought over the years that i've never been hurting for a dedicated piano library. Unless there was something specific you really wanted that the library can do well I don't think it's really that necessary to spend the money when there are some really great things from East West you could get for the same price. Like RA :) Stay the hell away from ministry of rock I &II too. just sayin'.

You could pick up Dimension Pro for about 100 bucks and go nuts with all the piano presets on there then go nuts again making your own. It's not as realistic as a piano library like EW's but you can do a heck of alot more with it especially if you are working with the electronic styles. I wouldn't do that if I was programming my own accompaniment for a concerto, but that's about the only thing i wouldn't use it for.

  11. This statement completely negates any argument she has then. By going against EVERYTHING she is talking about, she might as well have just said: "Hey, Listen to me talk for 50 minutes then forget everything I just said."

That's all I got out of it. I don't see how she could attack parts of games that no one would have enjoyed unless they were really messed up. Putting the player in positions where they can only make one tough choice, one that they aren't going to be happy with either way, shows how people don't think the way she's saying they do.

I'm probably going to get flack for this but extremists are supposed to be bad people remember? Extremists aren't about bringing people together but about splitting them up. I have nothing against her personally but she is inviting all the negativity she is getting. That fake laugh towards Bionic Commando isn't going to help either. If she's wikipedia'ing half this stuff anyway she needs to look this up ..... well wikipedia doesnt have it but here is something just as good http://www.nakasendoway.com/?page_id=1442 Over half the stuff she was attacking was Japanese, so she needs to know some things about them before attacking them.

Though I was glad to see her shoot down any sexist attitudes that people think fighting games have. Especially her own. Guess there is no point in watching her poorly named anti-fighting game video now.

  12. Some nice sounds you are working with. Well, not that crash. Might not be a crash actually. Whatever has that crash-like sound around 0:37 is not quite there with the rest of the mix. So anyway that crash doesn't blend is the gist of what i think i'm trying to say.

The middle reminds me of some moments in the Panzer Dragoon Saga soundtrack. It's a nice void but it could use some spacier sounding stuff. Do you have Absynth? It could also use a melody. Actually use that section as a chance to introduce a second melody, then use that second melody as a counter melody to your first one towards the end. voila, mix done. 8)

    Good start!

  13. well, just from looking at the thread title ("BJ") I actually thought this was going to be a list of bands/musicians who had similar incidents as Danny Brown. (if interested, slightly NSFW).

that wasn't a happy ending though. There was no moral lesson or resolved conflict, and that denouement was weak sauce.

    Come again?

Anyway it's not something I usually go for but i've tried all different types of booster juices. I find they are all watery, thin and they leave a bad taste in your mouth for days. Especially if you get too much at once because you sucked too hard. On the straw. hmm looks like I am on the wrong end of this so i'll finish it off by saying two bucks for a small booster juice is rarely worth the consequences, your friends are bound to think less of you just talking about it.

    Snappleman incoming.
