Tropes vs. Women / #GamerGate Conspiracies
timaeus222 replied to Brandon Strader's topic in General Discussion
I mean, c'mon, you can see that there's a list made here of examples of objectification. Maybe it's just me, but from that, I interpreted that djp was saying that depicting people in art is a form of objectification, not the prime example of it (nor the definition), probably because it puts the people in the art up on a pedestal to be observed. They can't consciously talk back to you, and therefore they're objects of observation. Granted, art qua art exists for itself, and IMO, it's meant to be observed and contemplated, but in general its purpose is to cause a response. Without further specification, there is no inherent or explicitly-defined intention to specify particular people in a general piece of art in order to serve one's own bigoted purpose. Specific examples might be bigoted, but not all. That said, objectification certainly does not involve ONLY depicting people in art, and I'm pretty sure djp gets that... Maybe that clears things up? :/ -

The first quote, since it shows you had defined the word objectification in a certain way, without further specification as to what kind at the time, it accidentally implied all objectification. The second quote honed in on what you meant NOT to say. That's all I'm saying. I'm not accusing you of contradicting yourself, but of not covering all your bases when you could have. But obviously I wasn't putting that down in a serious way (the "\'~'/"). -

Also this: This strongly suggests that she thinks that a belief in a "personal [protective] force field" against the "media's effects" is futile denial, because it apparently "is simply not the case" that we have one, which coincides with her belief of the so-called profound impact. But not a "direct causal line". --- And uh... and then... oops? \'~'/ -
Meanwhile, remix reviews are still lacking.

Tropes vs. Women / #GamerGate Conspiracies

I think I've gotten a similar glitch before and emailed you about it, djp. I think what djp's hinting at, with the "five steps away from censorship," is more like: "The use of certain tropes about women [potentially] reinforces negative cultural attitudes. Therefore, we [disapprove of game developers for using] these tropes." vs "The use of certain tropes about women [potentially] reinforces negative cultural attitudes. Therefore, games which use these tropes should be banned." What you said is valid---encouraging the removal of something vs. proposing the banning of something are fairly different in intent, but perhaps the comparison is idealistic? Encouraging the removal of something is less aggressive than discouraging the usage of something. Furthermore, there is also the idea that correlation doesn't necessarily prove causation, and the mere usage of certain tropes doesn't necessarily "[reinforce] negative cultural attitudes." It might, though. -

I actually think that censorship can be voluntary or involuntary. When it's voluntary, it's still censorship, but there may or may not be "outside pressure." If the "outside pressure" does not force it, or when there is no "outside pressure," then it's voluntary after (careful?) deliberation. When it's involuntary, it tends to mean that there is "outside pressure" that actually forces the censorship. You could see this from a simple censorship of an offensive word on television. You, as an actor, can either say the word outright and get beeped, or you can (literally) say "BEEEEP!" yourself for comic effect. The former is uncoerced/coerced, and the latter is voluntary. The former, if it was against the actor's wishes, is involuntary relative to the actor, while the former, if it was expected by the actor, is voluntary relative to the actor. ----- Overall, it doesn't have to be due to government intervention. The artist can do it him/herself as well. However, if the artist changes his/her mind after feeling doubts, but has not published the art yet, sure, that is artistic decision, but if the original content was objectionable, while the edited content is not, that still counts as censorship to me. If and only if the content is NOT objectionable, it is not censorship to alter it, IMO. -
30 second song Challenge - 'Foundry Room'
timaeus222 replied to timaeus222's topic in Post Your Original Music!
Yeah, I just made the guitar tone in a few minutes, so I didn't expect it to be amazing. -
Got bored, so I just finished this a few moments ago in about an hour and a half. Woops, 32 seconds. lol https://soundcloud.com/timaeus222/adamaudio-steelworker-30-second-song-foundry-room-by-timaeus It's for this contest.

I wish. That project has been slowing down a lot, but at least we know that a group of people are thinking the same thing as you in wanting more DK64.

Well, this was sort of happening a few years ago: http://ocremix.org/community/topic/33657-recruiting-donkey-kong-64-album-project/

OCR03251 - Super Castlevania IV "The Night King's Lament"
timaeus222 replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is excellent. Why hasn't anyone said anything? This is at once cinematic but not generically so. The fight sounds like it starts at 1:35, but everything else around it was leading up to it. This really conjures a "finale" atmosphere, like something that is certainly fit to be near the end of the album. Almost sounds cathartic at 3:55. Appropriate last track to the mixflood, because this is (deceptively?) great! -
OCR03259 - Portal 2 "Motion Sickness"
timaeus222 replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Sounds great! When I first heard this in the Workshops, I agreed with Kristina that the lead was pretty meandering. Now I actually think that it is much less meandering (still a bit at 1:56 - 2:11, but not nearly as much) and instead evokes a feel of frantic dizziness. -
OCR03258 - Mother "If You Believe"
timaeus222 replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I don't think I quite get the same feel as in Spirited Away (probably because I never really watched that film in full as a kid, but I did see it play on Cartoon Network repeatedly---about as often as The Iron Giant, so it's probably good!), but I'm constantly impressed by Zack, so there's no surprise here; this is amazing! Nice and evolving dynamics; full use of the orchestra in their respective roles; evokes the feeling of both flying and a certain emotional tension, for me. Though I must admit, I checked out the theme song to Spirited Away, and for a moment, I thought I was playing this ReMix, but at 2:52, I realized that there was a YouTube lossiness to it... I checked and forgot that I was playing the Spirited Away theme song. So maybe they really are that similar! -
That's odd, because as I tested it, I got sound to come out. Did you try reopening FL and loading the sounds again? There have been a few times where a plugin just stops playing sound for me too. I'm using Windows 7.

OCR03244 - The Walking Dead: Season One "Don't Go"
timaeus222 replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I like the slow-burn, gradual build this has. The break at 3:51 really invites introspection, contrasting well with the half-mourning, half-resolution atmosphere. This could work in a long funeral scene perhaps. Tough to write, but well worth listening to! -
OCR03255 - Chrono Trigger "Coming Darkness"
timaeus222 replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Yet another ReMix that reaches far and gets far! I love that metallic tonal drum---it gives a meditative feel, which kind of lulls you into a suspended state before the rock gradually comes in. I personally thought the acoustic kit was fairly lacking in low end in the fuller parts, and maybe some more soul could have been put into the lead guitar (gimme some vibrah toe!). Still, this is really stand-out. Great job! -
Okay, now that I'm home, I've opened up sfz and yeah, I also don't see .sfz files in the FL browser. However, once you get sfz working, you can get around it by left-clicking the rectangle next to "File" and browse for it in the window that pops up, and then you would see .sfz, .sf2, .wav, and .ogg files as you browse via sfz.
-
They probably have, but you can find it here (it's called sfz.zip): http://web.archive.org/web/20070715220351/http://www.rgcaudio.com/downloads/freeware/ Also, are you sure you put the SFZ files in the same place as the SF2 files are? Try locating the SF2 files within FL's browser, and then right clicking one of them and using the shell menu; you should be able to click something like, "Open file location". It should be in something like \FL Studio 11\Data\Patches\Soundfonts\.
-
I can't remember if sforzando runs on FL 11 well (can't check right now), but sfz by Cakewalk (which is different) works on FL 11, last I checked. http://www.kvraudio.com/product/sfz-by-cakewalk

Searching for some not-so-realistic sounds
timaeus222 replied to ticaw's topic in Music Composition & Production
I would try EDIROL Hypercanvas (similar sounds were used in FF Tactics, Suikoden II, etc). http://hyper-canvas-vst.software.informer.com/download/ (the MIDSCREEN green download button. The file is called vst_v160.zip) You can see it in action here: -
Kingdom Hearts ReMix Album Project -- Cancelled
timaeus222 replied to Chernabogue's topic in Recruit & Collaborate!
At the moment I'm not feeling particularly inspired by the tracks I've heard, but I'm always willing to collaborate.
