Creating Seamless loops for Video Games
MindWanderer replied to Schematist's topic in Music Composition & Production
I have no experience with FL Studio, but what I've done to get rid of this in other situations is to open the file in a WAV editor (e.g. Audacity) and zoom way the hell in to the waveform. If the location and direction of the waveform at the beginning and end of the loop are exactly the same (e.g. exactly in the middle and on the way up), at least in my experience, there doesn't seem to be a click. -
I'm a little leery of user-created content; I got Little Big Planet and wasn't terribly impressed by any of the top-rated levels I downloaded. But the core mechanics of the SMB games are much more solid and interesting, so maybe. Less artsy than LBP, more functional. I imagine the folks here will want to play with the music blocks, to add in their own soundtracks.

I'm still not a huge fan of rollers--probably just not used to the style, and I hate not having range--but you totally called it on the .52. Not many players use splash walls, so I run into lots of people who don't know how to work with it. Some try to get into shooting matches with me through the wall. Lots get splatted when it hits their feet while riding on the tower--and at worst, it forces them to jump off. I can throw it out in front of me when I'm riding the tower, since most people approach it from the front, and if I time it right, they don't have time to turn around or back up before I shoot them through it (and I often get the instant kill when they can't abort their charge fast enough). It even holds back the Kraken, and I get to sit back and watch it flail against the wall in futility. Also, I just got my first quad-kill with the Killer Wail; now that it charges faster, it's even better. The .52 is now my default weapon for all modes, though the Slosher Deco may beat it out when it's released. The only thing that really bugs me is lag. I often get three hits with it before it registers as a kill, even against opponents that have no defense boosts, and that's a lot of time in a game like this.

New weapons out! I imagine Kat is making good use of the Inkbrush Nouveau (Bubbler on a brush sounds amazing), but with the Range Blaster I think I finally have a main. Not the best ink spread, but not bad. Longest-range one-shot kills without charging. I find that having a one-shot weapon is really valuable for me because I get ambushed a lot, and if I'm not during the RoF delay when it happens, I can survive more often than with other weapons. The AoE is nice when your aim sucks, like mine does. It's a nice counter to snipers, since I can air-burst them from where they have no line of sight to me. Ink Strike is nice for both Ranked formats, and the Splash Curtain... well, I'm still working out how to use that best, but I did have a glorious moment when an enemy Carbon Roller found out that it takes a whole precious second to mow the thing down. I finally got brave enough to try ranked, and made it to rank C with 5 wins, 0 losses with this bad boy (Splat Zones). You must be absolutely amazing, then, because I'm now level 20 and I've never seen a performance like that. A 1500 point loss would be an 1800 point win, and I've never seen anyone break 1600. (I've also never seen a team short a player win a match, though sometimes they've come close.) On another note, man, network issues were bad this weekend. Dropped players all over the place. I even had one hilarious match where six of the players got dropped and it became a one-on-one. My poor opponent, a level 8 with an Inkbrush Nouveau, just kept respawning and promptly dying again, ending with under 5%.

What are people favoring for gear? It's easy to tell how different weapons feel (favoring the N-ZAP '89 right now, but still playing around, especially with rollers), but gear is more subtle. Right now I have Comeback, Recon, and Stealth Jump, which, since I die a lot, seems to work pretty well--come back into play unanticipated, knowing exactly where the enemies are in advance, and opening fire on them with some nice buffs. Not useful while just running around, though. Tenacity, Ninja Squid, and Ink Resist Up seems better when I'm up against worse teams, or am playing more conservatively, but then, that's not when I need the most help.

I'm working on something that could benefit from some real guitar, but it's not ready yet. I'll send you a PM when it is (probably in the next couple of months).

Compatibility (Microsoft Edge) "Windows 10"

Could force the MIME-type only for a specific user-agent, to keep the change as minimal as possible. Not sure what the user-agent looks like for Edge, though, or if it's different from IE. -

Mega Man X: The Sigma Fortress Remix Gauntlet 2015
MindWanderer replied to DarkeSword's topic in Competitions
The mixes aren't even out yet and you want results? Check the first post for the due date of the mixes; Darke is usually pretty good about getting the mixes up for download within an hour or two after the deadline. Then there's a week of voting while the next group mixes. -
Final Fantasy-Mystic Quest Medley
MindWanderer replied to Possessed's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Wow, that's a bit on the loud side. I wouldn't call this "inspired" so much as a cover. It's a very good cover, but it's not really a remix. It gets a little creative very briefly towards the end, but that's it. Fade-out ending is ugh but one doesn't expect more from a VGM cover with so little interpretation. Also, the transition between the two parts is really abrupt, even more so than most remixes accused of "medley-itis." Even the instrumentation changes. Even if you're not intending this for OCR, that could really be smoothed out. -
finished DuckTales - Transylvania ReMix feat. Furilas!
MindWanderer replied to AngelCityOutlaw's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Very nice. I love the cheesy theremin and organ work. And your take on the chorus is really, really nice. I feel like it could use a bit more of an introduction. You obviously have no trouble with original content; a bit of that at the beginning to build up would be nice IMHO. Otherwise, I have nothing to add. Get this posted! -
I am now totally addicted. I love how the lack of voice chat and the fact that kills are only indirectly useful makes this a very casually competitive game. I also love how well-balanced it is already--I've seen players who specialize in, and are incredibly skilled with, just about every weapon in the game. I've never yet been killed by a squiffer, and only rarely rapid blasters and jet squelchers, but I've been utterly destroyed by at least one person who used just about everything else. I have my favorites, of course, and certain weapons are clearly more popular than others, but it looks like the vast majority are at least viable. My initial experience remains the same: once the English names disappear and are replaced with Japanese late at night, I pretty much stop winning. That crowd is just consistently amazing. Lots of Americans are really good, but most of them not so much. August updates were just announced: new weapons and maps, obviously, new gear for the first time, and a much-needed increase to the level cap, but also new game modes. Most notably, team play and custom matches will be supported, enabling Splatoon to become a legitimate e-sport. I don't have the time for that sort of thing, but I'm excited to see how it goes.

With the move to ThaSauce, there won't be any more compilation downloads. Also Season 3 is only halfway through. -
Free multi-sampled synth packs
MindWanderer replied to theshaggyfreak's topic in Music Composition & Production
Hm, so they're in formats for Logic, Kontakt, Ableton Live, and Reason. I know the free version of Kontakt can only play free samples for a limited time. Are any of the others compatible with any generic VST samplers? -
Yeah, I personally think it's unfortunate that the OCR panel hates fakey instruments so much. It seems like everything has to be really close to live performance quality, or so synthetic it doesn't resemble a real instrument at all. There are a few exceptions where one low-fi instrument is accepted as an aesthetic choice, usually among a bunch of synths, but otherwise it doesn't seem like 4th-5th generation-esque sounds can get through. I also like those a lot. They're close enough to real instruments to convey intent and capture the feel of a genre, and I don't find them unpleasant to listen to at all.

It was on Wednesday night. Yesterday night was fine, though--though then, too, most were Japanese. From the YouTube videos I've seen, they mostly seem to be Japanese all the time. Very interesting experience, I had a lot of fun. For the first hour and a half, everyone kind of sucked--there were level 17+ players with scores below 500, and I was consistently the top scorer. One particular match had me at level 3 and three other players level 7 and below, the opponents were all level 15-20, and we won by a wide margin. I hope the level 20 players getting creamed by a bunch of noobs found it as amusing as I did. Then at about 11:30, the pros apparently showed up. There was a constant stream of me and my allies respawning over and over again, and my scores dropped by 75%. It was horrible. Very much looking forward to playing again tonight. Just a couple more fights and I can get the much-touted Aerospray!

Just finished the campaign mode last night (special midnight bulletin from Callie and Marie!), diving into multiplayer tonight or tomorrow. First time doing online multiplayer anything, so we'll see how that goes.... Edit: Apparently 11 PM PDT on a weeknight is not a good time for matchmaking, at least not for a game marketed toward a younger crowd. I may not be able to play this game as much as I thought.

Soundfonts aren't the most typical way to do 8-bit and 16-bit sounds, although there are some 16-bit soundfonts out there. SetzerSPC comes to mind. For SNES sounds, C700 is a great way to go. You can load .spc files into it and emulate the exact sounds used by the game and track you load. They may lack a few of the properties of the source (e.g. reverb) but they'll get you 95% of the way there. For NES, there are quite a few--NES VST, Magical 8-bit Plug, and NES Pulse are my go-to VSTi's. I'm not sure if you meant to include the Commodore 64, but Bleep' and Base65 are good there. I'm not as familiar with Genesis chip emulators, though there are a few of them you can find easily enough, so I'll let others give you advice about those. There are also some generic synths that cover chiptune sounds really well. TAL-Noisemaker and Synth1 come to mind right away, but pretty much any softsynth will be able to do squares, pulses, and triangles.

Heart of a Gamer: A Tribute to Satoru Iwata - History
MindWanderer replied to The Damned's topic in Projects
For Smash, I recommend either Smash 64 (where it all started) or Melee (for which he took time off being a manager to debug himself). His role in Brawl and Smash 4 wasn't as definitive, IMO. http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/iwata-nintendo-retrospective/ -
wip Saga Frontier 2 - Thema Remix
MindWanderer replied to bluelighter's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I'll take the bullet and say that I don't actually know what you mean by this. As far as I know, panning far left means that 100% of the sound is coming out of the left speaker, vice-versa for right, and centering means that the volume is split 50/50 between both. I imagine that what bluelighter did was simply copy the same track twice, each one hard panned to opposite sides, and then reduced the volume by half to compensate. Which would have the exact same sound as centering it in the first place. The only thing I can imagine you mean is that the two speakers should be different somehow--different takes of a live instrument, different samples in a round-robin, microvariations in timing or velocity, subtle differences in FX, etc. Since I've heard this criticism before, I imagine I'm totally wrong about my understanding and would appreciate correction.
