The reason I mixed the bass in quietly is because it's basically just playing the same thing over and over again, while the pizzicato cellos are playing the "rhythm" stuff that was in the original. Less bassline and more background, I guess. Though I suppose I could give both those instruments a collective boost and see if it's improved. Hah, I wasn't planning that ahead of time. Writing good chords for the strings was painful, so I decided to not have any for the second half of that section. And it was impossible to keep up intensity from the beginning without sounding awkward, so everything just sort of quiets down as that section goes on. Concerning round robins... none of my guitar (or synthesized koto in this case) sounds have them. Maybe I could try getting an actual acoustic guitar player to record something for me, then tinny up the sound just enough to fit the soundscape, but not sound like a regular guitar? Are you just talking about EQ, or new instruments? And are there any specific pasts of the song where you think this is a problem? -

I changed many of the chords during the 1:24-2:12 section to be less messy, and I replaced the cymbal crash with a timpani. I also slightly changed the lead instruments at 2:48. If anyone wants a compassion, I put an older version in the OP. Subtlety? An instrument doesn't necessarily have to be noticeable to contribute. I also played in my high school band and orchestra, attended a few concerts, and enjoy listening to orchestral music anyways, so I guess I have some experience with what instruments go together? And thank you. -

I don't believe you. Lack of velocity layers? You can still control note volumes in your DAW, right? What if you tried muffling the tone of your bass notes, and you mixed a few of the samples together for each note? What about the bad mixing? You can still fix that. And yes, the song does indeed have reverb. But what if you added a shorter, but less dry reverb patch to blur notes together a bit? My own copy of EWQLSO Gold wouldn't sound nearly as good if I just slapped notes into my DAW and expected it to do all the rest. -

If you're trying to get a realistic orchestra sound, I think you should add some reverb and "mess up" the attacks of some of the notes. The staccato bassline sounds like it's being played by robots. Are you combining a flute and horn for the melody? Collectively, they seem too loudly mixed compared to the sparse backing instruments, especially because they sound like they're supposed to be solo samples.(?) -
The show about a... ah forget it. I realized that there's no thread about this show on ocremix, and it's a crime for me to not serve as a living advertisement and babble about this to every potential StarFox fan I meet. Look at how expressive their faces are! To quote avclub.com, A Fox in Space is "an irreverent Star Fox animated series with ’70s style." Basically the sort of thing I always wished Nintendo would do with this franchise - actually build a story around it's characters that doesn't end in a reboot. Even better - a serious space drama juxtaposed against animal characters, which is the impression I got playing the original game. (And would prefer over the Saturday morning cartoon camp of later games.) Anyways, it was the personal project of Matthew Gafford, (Fredryk Phox - anyone remember him?) for several years, getting a name change along the way due to a Nintendo DMCA. Episode 2 is in the works, with more animators to help this time.

Well, the orchestra bits overall could sound and match the rest of the song in tone better. I'm not arguing that it's perfect as it is. Ignoring that I think I really like the transition from the serious intro to "hotshot flyboy" mode. This is off topic, but I just realized that there's no thread for this and there probably should be. Also - it's generally good forum etiquette to edit your last post if you decide you have something more to say, (unless you're trying to bump a topic.)

I do like the orchestral intro that leads into the fast electronic stuff, though I understand if you don't like the orchestral stuff later on because it kills the pace.

Ok, I removed the crazy flutes - they don't fade in until 0:48 now. I'll probably try tweaking a few of the chords later. Is the overall volume too quiet? -
The drums are a bit buried under all those low saw-wave chords, if you have any drums playing besides the bass, I can't really hear it. You could make them louder or free up the low frequencies, but i also I think they would have much more of an impact if you gave them sharper attacks. They sound muffled as they are. As a general rule of thumb, you shouldn't have thick chords at low frequencies, because it becomes harder to distinguish notes, and it gets muddy. If you could make them sound less muddy, I think the low saw-wave chords might sound good for a more intense part of the song, but right now they play throughout the entire song without any variation, and it isn't too interesting as a result. You could probably try swapping it for some softer sounds at the beginning, and eventually build up to the harsh synths.

I considered making an orchestral remix of Crysta reminiscent of the opening theme of "How to Train Your Dragon," but I ended up making something original instead. Anyways, if whoever plans on remixing it wants to give it some orchestral flare, I could probably contribute.

I haven't played too much D&D, but I've always had an interest, and over the years I've collected a bunch of pdf files for various games and editions. Anyone can PM me if they're interested in seeing and using them. (I even have a few folders full of maps, and deck-plans for Traveller.) ____ Edit: Oh, and if you don't mind his curmudgeonly attitude and a complete lack of editing, you might enjoy Spoony's Counter Monkey series.

Especially after being stuck in a cave. Anyways, any criticism is welcome for this.

The orchestral stuff at the beginning doesn't sound particularly real, although I do like the arrangement, and I like your decision to use an actual orchestra sound for the "stabs." But I think more realistic orchestra and guitar sounds would improve the song overall. The silence at 1:37 feels very awkward... whatever you were trying to do, I don't think it's working. I also think the percussion could be more interesting - it would be much more more exciting if there was more than just a bass-snare-bass pattern right on the beat for most of the song. And the samples you used for the drums sound rather weak - I'm sure you could find some better electric drum sounds for free just by searching.

Would you believe me if I said I had a similar idea for a creepy, ambient Ridley mix? That 3 note motif that plays throughout seems ideal for some atmospheric interpretation. Anyways, you really did the idea justice.

Ok, I've finished the entire thing! Check the OP for a SoundCloud link. I tried to fix the randomly loud piano notes. I've improved the percussion everywhere. I've lengthened the transition at 1:52. Made the violins louder at 2:54. Made the cello sound better at 3:14. Added the waltz portion of the remix! -

I've replaced the Dropbox file with an updated, longer version. The main theme appears much more prominently at what is currently the end now. Can you explain? Does the piano have too harsh a sound, or does it just get too loud? And can you point out a specific time where this happens? Also, would it be more convenient for people if I just posted the WIP to my Soundcloud, and updated that? -

Many people who work with music use Macs, because Logic. But unless you specifically need or want to use a Mac program, there's nothing a Mac can do that a PC can't.

Well, isn't collaboration the purpose of that list? Meaning that the number of people who use a DAW is more important than what you can make with it. (Although I don't know for sure that the amount of people that use Mixcraft on these forums isn't comparable to the number of people that use some of the lesser known DAWs already on the list.) -

I use Mixcraft as well, and I think a handful of people on these forums do as well. But it is indeed a far less known and less professionally-regarded DAW than any of the others you saw on the list. -
Needs more Star Fox remixes. I can only listen to djpretzel's 'Clan McCloud' so many times before I start to notice that it was made in 2000.
