  1. It's not devoid of strategy. In the original Final Fantasy game, the battle with Chaos was a balance between healing the party, buffing the fighters, and not letting anyone run out of MP. Or the Bahamut fight in FF4 where it's a race to cast reflect on your entire party. Or the fight with the CPU in FF4 where you have to figure out which attack pattern will screw you over the least. Admittedly, once you get leveled up, most fights are just press X to win. And you can usually just spam tough enemies with your best magic unless the designers had a specific gimmick in mind. I feel that Chrono Trigger designed it's battle system explicitly around being ATB, making it inherently stronger than FInal Fantasy's ATB, which evolved from a turn based system. Distant Worlds has my favorite rendition of the opening battle theme, so it's nice to see it used in the official trailer, and possibly (maybe) even influence the real soundtrack. I think it's actually justified, considering how much bigger and more detailed they (presumably) want to make it than the original. Normally I scoff at AAA companies for inflating their budgets to no benefit, but in this case I think FF7 would be worth it.
  2. Isn't that the Distant Worlds: Music From Final Fantasy rendition of the opening battle theme? I love it.
  3. Completely awesome. The source works very well with guitars. The rotating room song was never supposed to sound completely menacing IMO. This is a great adaptation of the "suave" aspect of the original.
  4. This song, plus a few remixes of MM3 title theme, is what got me listening to OC Remix. The first minute is great. I really like transition from reverby-8-bit to the remix at the beginning.
  5. The opening of Final Fantasy VI always made my jaw drop at how atmospheric and truly cinematic it's opening was. This remix captures it's mood perfectly and beautifully.
  6. I love the style of this remix. For lack of anything better to say - I love the way it sounds. It's a fun song to listen to. The repeated Mario SFX were awkward the first listen, but I've gotten used to it.
  7. Anyways, the opening song of Undertale is beautiful, and I wanted to make a remix. I completely changed the chords of the first part, and the melody of the middle bit. There's a lot more instruments doing stuff in general. It also ends with a hint of "Your Best Friend" Original: https://tobyfox.bandcamp.com/track/once-upon-a-time-2 Remix: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YP3jAa70qY
  8. OC ReMix doesn't have any Undertale remixes. And how could it if judging takes a year? Also, YouTube has grown a lot, and has many remixes. Are they amateur? Yes, but I don't always care. Many of the remixes I loved on OC Remix ~2001-2003ish were amateur. So, to answer the OP: It's because the new remixes that blow my balls off aren't exclusively on OC Remix anymore.
  9. Why did you use what sounds like a TB-303 bassline when everything else is instrumental?
  10. Logic is basically a professional version of Garage Band, (or so I hear - I didn't like Garage Band, but Logic seems fine,) so it's a logical choice. I can say for sure that it's entirely doable to make orchestral compositions in Logic. But of course - orchestral compositions can be done in most DAW's. EWQLSO Silver is basically a stripped down version of Gold for a cheaper price. It's what I've used for a long time. So if the iLok dongle/the fact that it's stripped down/the sounds themselves don't put you off, I can recommend it.
  11. The website http://www.vgmusic.com/ contains midi versions of classic videogame music. You can easily load the midi files into your DAW, and use them to study the structure of the song. I'd highly recommend it. Unfortunately I have to agree with some of the comments - the writer doesn't know as much about DAWs as he thinks he does, but I suppose it's a decent rundown for beginners.
  12. You need a DAW to make the music in. There's more that are not listed in that link, (I use Mixcraft 7) the cheapest ones that I've seen go for around $60. Unless you're going to record yourself playing an instrument, you'll need a synthesizer or sample library for your palette of sounds. (For example, I use EWQLSO Gold for my orchestra sounds.) There are a few free synthesizers, but most of this stuff tends to be expensive. Here's some free stuff. 9 Chip-Tune Plug-ins. If you're new to making music, I'd recommend playing with chip-sounds to get a hang of sequencing with simple sounds. http://www.musicradar.com/news/tech/9-of-the-best-chiptune-vst-plug-ins-554428 TAL Noisemaker: http://tal-software.com/products/tal-noisemaker Variety of Sound Plugins: https://varietyofsound.wordpress.com/ Blue Cat Audio Freeware Plugins: http://www.bluecataudio.com/Products/Category_0_Freeware/ Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra - Good for practicing orchestra, but won't sound anywhere near as good as a sample library you have to pay for. http://sso.mattiaswestlund.net/ Arachno SoundFont: http://www.arachnosoft.com/main/soundfont.php If your DAW has a sampler, you could probably use some of these percussion sounds. http://www.philharmonia.co.uk/explore/make_music The Sound Iron "Iron Packs" are very cheap and contain a decent amount of sounds in each one, but they are limited in their usefulness. http://soundiron.com/collections/iron-packs Once you have sounds, you can load it in your DAW of choice, and start working on the song. You don't need anything else.
  13. An online listening party? I'm not sure how they work, can someone explain?
  14. I've heard that Studio One 3 is very good, but I haven't used it myself. My DAW is Acoustica Mixcraft 7, and I think it strikes a great balance between usability and power. I wouldn't recommend it myself, I tried it when I first considered making music, but I found it too limited. It left a bad taste in my mouth. Logic seems good though.
  15. I love this remix. So much that I just downloaded it in it's WIP state. I don't really have any criticisms, but this isn't a genre I'm familiar with, so that doesn't count for much.
  16. I have folders and folders of 20 second, unfinished ideas. It's nothing to be ashamed of.
  17. I mostly mean that it sounds empty, like there aren't that many instrument playing. I think the biggest reason for this is that there aren't many chords, the different sections mostly only play 1 note at a time. And most of the time many sections just aren't playing at all. This contributes greatly to it sounding empty and boring. In the original, the melody layered over itself, building a chord and getting more intense, the orchestra in the link does this too. None of the instruments accent, or really have any expression at all. Nothing stands out, (possibly having the effect of making it sound thin?) Accent is especially important here, not only would it make the orchestra sound more real, I think accenting instruments would automatically scream "this is exciting!" It's what real musicians do when something's exciting. (Disclaimer: I've only ever played solo and in a not-very-good high school orchestra, so this is speculation...) Not making the song "too orchestrally" is not an issue - it's an orchestra! Make it orchestrally! Right now it's not doing the song any favors by sounding lifeless. P.S. - Typically, you make a half-electronic, half-orchestral song by using one to flavor the other.
  18. It worked accurately in Chrome! Unless anything was happening in the background, then it started playing sloppily again. Oh - and it doesn't distinguish between instruments.
  19. I'd argue that Synthesia is much better as a cool visualizer. It's accurate, and has a sleeker, non-fps-consuming design... but it's not browser-based so whatever. Some tracks that stand out. If anyone wants every midi from the game, just pm me and I'll send it to you. (Note to anyone not familiar with Runescape: during it's 2004-2007ish heyday, the soundtrack was entirely midi. So this 16.3 MB collection of 413 songs and 226 jingles is technically the original soundtrack.)
  20. Synthesia is pretty good if you want to see a piano play midi files Guitar Hero style.
  21. I tried having it play the Runescape soundtrack. (Why aren't there any remixes of that?) For some reason it seems to lag/inaccurately play songs that should have computer precision.
  22. Yikes. The change you made from the original at 0:25 was not an improvement. I don't know what else to say - it's just not. And you repeated and accented it! It might fit better if you altered the chord progression leading up to it though. I think the ending should be a bit grander, or at the very least not just stop suddenly. Aside from that, I really like this. Very good orchestration.
  23. I really like the style you went for overall. The orchestra doesn't sound real at all, but it kinda works, except at 1:49 and 3:46, when the orchestra is put to the forefront. Although I think the arrangement is otherwise good. I think the bass instruments at 0:40 get a bit muddy, and you should try to make it clearer. I like the instrument you're using for the melody at 1:00, and I think you should bring it out a bit more. The percussion here sticks out too much just slightly. Despite saying I liked the style, the escape theme is an exception - to me it feels like a midi with some instruments thrown over it, without much of a style. I think you should try doing something more original with it. Maybe beefing it up since it's an escape theme. I liked the bit at 3:20 though.
