  1. Try the Cello in Squidfont; I like it alot. Not very expressive, but solid and thick. As for my request: I'm looking for ambient samples (soundfonts would be fine, but WAVs preferred). Basically, I just mean non-musical samples, like "whoosh", or "zoop", but not so cheesy . Also, more literally ambient stuff like caves and forests and cities and all that. I hate to make comparisons to games or specific songs and all, but if you've ever played Metroid Prime, you've probably heard the kind of stuff I'm talking about (like in the Overworld theme, where not only are there ambient elements but also random cool sound effects that play and then delay). Request #2: Tinkly percussion . You know, like glass breaking, but not actually realistic, I'm just using that as an archetype for the type of sound. The type of sound that can easily replace a hi-hat line, and sounds very cool in many situations. All things welcome, like tambourines and even hi-hats on the tinkly side. And I have to recommend the "Guray" series of SoundFonts; reminds me of Florestan in that it's a whole big sereis, but it has more, and alot of very high quality stuff (like Marcato strings and a cool accordian). I'll try to find a link, but it shouldnt be too hard to find . Also, check out the FFIV SoundFont from Zophar.net, it's got some really cool old-school sounding samples, if not always the most useable.
  2. Sykotik, do you really want techo *samples? I mean, sure, you can still do some cool stuff with them, but I'm guessing you're not planning on doing that cool retro tracker stuff. If you have FL, what you want is VSTi for synth, unless for some reason I'm wrong, which I'm not (or if you are lazy, can't figure out how to work VST technology, have technical problems, etc...). Anyway, if you want just a straight answer to your question, you can find a SoundFont called "Oberon" something, it's pretty cool for an SF. My own question is pretty simple. I think I basically have all the really excellent SoundFonts. I have SquidFont, Piano Giga Steinway, ns_kit, Cadenza, Florestan everything, plus alot of other stuff but that's not what I'm worried about. The deal is, I want to know if there are any lesser-known amazing SoundFonts or sample sets out there. I would hate to miss out just because I am satisfied with my current free SoundFont library; there's plenty of stuff I would still like to have . So I guess what I'm asking is for recommendations of the highest quality free SoundFonts, because I feel as though I've basically got almost everything worth having, which would make me sad so I'm hoping someone has some really amazing link to some amazing little-known and free SF's.
  3. Yes: automation. Automation is what makes things happen when you're not actually doing it. Just press the record button and change the tempo in the middle of the song, and it will save the changes at the specific points in time. You can also edit these events (being changes along with points in time) manually with the Event Editor (right click to see a useful menu).
  4. But by whom? I'll bet I know. A moderator! Are there going to be official stickies for every sequencer/tracker now?
  5. I understand that, but I was hoping to be able to control the automation from inside the normal piano roll. Anyway, I ended up doing exactly what you said because I couldn't figure out how to map it correctly. I really don't know much about the difference between all the versions, myself, but I know that you should at least get the one with 64 FX channels (you'll need them). Anybody know if it's possible to map individual notes on a Piano Roll to separate MIDI ports? What I've been doing is making a new MIDI Out for each note, and then just copying all the notes of that note from the main piano roll into the new MIDI Out. It works, but it's frustrating when you want to make a chnage, because you have to change many different tracks rather than just one track. (I'm doing this because I have all the notes in my instrument (all the needed notes, of course) playing at the same time, but each is gated separately, and each note corresponds to the correct MIDI gate).
  6. ok, now I am having a problem. I am trying to map a Mixer Track's panning knob, MIDI-wise, to one of the knobs of a MIDI Out. However, it doesn't seem to recognize it. I've try changing the Controller # and Channel # and everything, but the panning knob just stands still when I move the controlling knob, even when it says it should be correctly mapped, and the controlling knob's configuration says it fits what the panning knob is mapped to. Also, you know in the piano roll, or the step sequencer, where it has the "Panning" parameter for each note? Well, is there any way I can map THAT to something? That would make it a whole lot easier, if I could pan it inside the piano roll... Anyway, those are my two questions.
  7. What do you know? Do you know anything about music? Try opening FL, and explaining what exactly you can figure out on your own. From there, you can see what your capabilities are. Since you're a DJ, you should know something about mixing and music in general; but I don't really know what a DJ does other than ride disks in races, so that isn't much help.
  8. I've always wondered what the Fruity LSD was. It has a fun name.
  9. But both of those are for Mixer tracks; you could put Tape It on the Master and then play it, though. Oh, yeah, and is there anyway to save a series of Effects in the Mixer? Like, GreenMachine -> Compressor -> Reverb -> Blue Box, complete with settings for those Effects?
  10. Well... it ended up that I was able to finally tame it. I just had to wait an hour while it tried to process the "Save As..." command so I could begin the process of exporting everything as audio and then importing it back again.
  11. In answer to your question, NoWave: probably. I have no idea. I do know that there are better solutions for live performance than FL, but if you're limited to FL, you could try looking it up in the FL forum if somebody here doesn't know. Th1rdeye, just put the soundfont somewhere in the browser, and drag it onto the channel list with all the other synths/samples/soundfonts. As for my own question: rendering each pattern separately. Normally, this could be done manually fairly easily, but several things complicate it for this case. The main thing being that FL is so bogged down I can barely do anything... which is the reason I want to render each pattern separately anyway, so I can import the heavy CPU patterns as samples. I can render each mixer track separately, but not only does that record a full song-length for each track, and is just completely different from rendering from each pattern, but it also doesn't adjust by the Master volume. Maybe it's a bad habit, but it's lowered significantly to reduce clipping, I mean, who cares if you have to turn it up, clipping is bad. So, when I render the mixer tracks, they come out all clipped up, since they didn't go through the Master track. Is there any easy way to render to individual tracks? A macro or something, maybe? I've never made one before; could they do this? Or is there some other way that's worth while? Thanks.
  12. You can slow down a sample by lowering its pitch. Also, there are lots of plugins all over for slowing down samples and all; I can't think of any, since I don't exactly use the effect much, but there's one called "Slower", I think.
  13. Alright. I fixed it. =D Turns out there's a really helpful Macro called "Prepare for Midi Exportation." I used it, it's all fine now. If anyone asks this again, make sure that they are told, if I'm not here... I would hate to not have found this.
  14. Arg... Ok. Here's what I'm trying to do. I need to get *NOTATION* from several of my older songs. I've been trying to save the whole thing as a MIDI and open it up with my notator, and it gets as far as having the first three VST synths I'm using to show up, but it only has those 3 channels, with no notation. I'm using Cakewalk Music Creator 2002, btw, if that matters, and it's not just a FL problem. Should I ... should I just make a whole lot of MIDI Out's and copy the piano rolls onto them? Would that make it work? I mean... this is pretty important. I just hope I don't have to resort to just completely redoing everything by hand in the MIDI Notator. So if anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate your help and input.
  15. Really? You like the Killerz series? I personally hate them... they make some pretty cool sounds, but they're worth nothing to me in the mix. I guess I could work harder to make them fit in, though. If you already have Crystal, then I'd recommend... hey, aren't there already a few threads like this? Instead of doing my usual big synth list, I'll just tell you to check out Synth 1, SoloString, SuperWave P8, Lollapalooza (however you spell it), PhobiaStation, Rogue (those last two are related, but still very different), and Discovery (not free... but if any synth is worth paying for, Discovery is, IMO).
  16. Um... hm. Under what circumstances would I want to switch FROM fl? Or, come to think of it, maybe this would have a better responce outside the FL thread... but I'll try it out here first. FL has served me well, but there's gotta be some truth in what people are saying about the flaws. What would I gain by switching from FL to something like Cubase?
  17. Cart man, there's a difference between using default samples and paying for samples. I myself have never even considered using commercial samples, and I have some very high quality ones... (I've considered using commercial VST's, but so far I haven't given in). Really, almost anything you need you can find for free relatively easily at high quality.
  18. Wow... I haven't heard this song in SO LONG. I was wondering if I would recognize it... in case it's not obvious, YES. I DO. Such an amazing theme... On to the mix. This isn't really as "refined" as it could be, but most of that is in the intro. Of course the intro isn't bad, but the snare is a lil muddy, and the bass sounds not so great on its own (same with the hat). When the pitch-bending synth comes in I was still not sure about what was going to be going on with this ReMix. As soon as that synth comes in at :30, I knew what this was going to be all about, though . Great use of absence of percussion, and the shuffling beat that comes in is perfect. Like the bass, the pitch-bending synth sounds just mediocre by itself, but it's perfect in the mix. This could easily be modified into something much more hardcore/trance that you could dance to rather than just bob your head to, but that wouldn't necessarily be a change for the better, just a different version. This easily has more than enough appeal to compete with a Dance piece of the same type but slightly different. Phased gated strings are really nice to listen to and the sound effect actually sounds very professional and fitting. Piano is fine... could have been used in a more funkish aspect, but it doesn't really do much anyway, so the usage is fine. Ending with the sound effect is a little bit off to me. I think it would have been a great simple delay-out, but this is a style choice that I can live with. Maybe delay on the sample itself would have been a good idea? It just sort of cuts off a little too quick, even though it does go slowly. amazing mix altogether, though; the perfect use of techniques from other genres, but in a genre of its own (which I will define as "Dream Dance" temporarily).
  19. I don't think that's what he means, Xelebes (although I could be wrong). Flipside, I think what you want is just to right-click on the knob and press "Init with This Position" or something to that effect. Then it will stay at that level even after you press stop. Or perhaps you were recording once while you tweaked it, and then changed it back while it was not recording, so it always stays where you stopped it. Or maybe you just clicked "Init to This Position" by accident once... or maybe you were editing the events (right-click, Edit Events). This is where you can program the knob... if there's anything in there, you can Select All and Delete (if you want). But if there's nothing in there then "Init to This Position should do the trick.
  20. Loading .fxb? That's one thing I know how to do You can either put it in your Data/Patches folder (anywhere) and use the browser to drag it onto the Step Sequencer, or from inside the plug-in you can click the down-pointing arrow (below the pink symbol) and select "Load Cubase Preset File" or something to that effect, and then browse to it.
  21. *Solution to my problem * To organize synths and presets, create a Plug-ins section in the Data/Patches (so it shows up in the browser). You can organize it however you want, but just have a Default preset right in the folder, and a Presets sub-folder. You can just drag the preset into the Step Sequencer, and it'll open up the synth. It'll be a lil boring/labor intensive to set up tho .
  22. Heh, Xelebes, all the ones I have are free. Go find them yourself, on K-V-R, or even Google... except for Rogue, which isn't on K-v-R, but you NEEED it. Dont have a link, just Google "Phobia 303 transistor Rogue" or something, it'll come up. Garian, I'm sorry to hear that there's no way I can organize em . But you have to understand, there are always more free VSTi's, and they are all unique in their own way. And I don't have FM7 . I almost exclusively use free ones, or demos. That's why I need to specialize. I'll take the useless ones off my list, that's a good idea .
  23. Wow... this really sucks . I have too many VST(i)'s/DX(i)'s ... for one thing, navigating all of them is a pain, as you can only scroll so fast, and now that it's gone to the scrolling single-vertical-pane (with the arrows at the bottom and top) it's even worse... at least it was manageable when it was set out in 3 or so adjacent panes, if not easy to find exactly what I want. Is there any way for me to organize all these? It just is really hindering my productivity, and it's really frustrating I like how Buzz has everything separated out into their little categories (Vocoders, Gaters, Basses, FM's, Phase-Distortions, Virtual Analogues, Delays, etc...); is there any way that I can make FL do this, or at least something that will help me manage everything? It's the same way with all my VST presets, not only can you not tell what instrument they are for before you open them (and it's not like I can remember all of them), but I have so many that they revert to a single-vertical-scrolling-pane menu, making it even harder. So, any help or ideas or tricks or comments?
