  1. I have a question regarding MIDI recording. Is there a way to get the latency down to a suitable level for recording (say, 6 ms)? I've done several tests, and I have concluded that the problem isn't that I just suck at timing (as I first thought). Often the MIDI responsiveness will be totally satisfactory during normal play and during recording, but the latency somehow affects it so that the actual recording of the MIDI sounds totally out of time while it sounded fine when you were actually doing the recording. I haven't ruled out that this is all a perception issue, but I'm fairly sure that the main problem is that the latency is (by necessity; otherwise it will underrun) over 10 ms, thus producing noticable mis-recordings. The kX drivers have caused problems on several peoples' computers (including mine ) and I've tried the Wuschel ASIO driver, and it did do slightly better, but it still couldn't get it down to an accurate recording level. And this was all just on a blank project! Imagine trying to record inside a real, live, project with 17 synths and 26 FX channels with 3 effects on each channel under these conditions. Anyway, I am asking for information here. I am still trying to rule out the idea that I just suck at timing, and my perception is somehow distorted at the time I'm playing to make it sound like it's relatively on time, but in reality it is horribly horribly not on time, which comes to light when I listen to the MIDI recording. And once I'm sure that's not the case, the next step is figuring out how the heck I can get MIDI recording latency down to a suitable level. I'm sure somebody out there must be doing this, but I have no idea how they can get such low latencies! Wait, I have an SBLive! Is that a problem? I think it's an SBLive Economy edition... but my MIDI is going through USB anyway, so it shouldn't even interact with the soundcard, right? And softsynths do their processing on the CPU, as far as I know, not the sound card's processor... anyway, thanks for your help =).
  2. Aequitas, check m-#####'s !soundfont thing for strat_marshall2.sf2. This is an awesome guitar, make sure to apply some Overdrive/Distortion to it (although it's pre-distorted, this will make it less static). LAzee, I don't know either, but that sounds cool. However, it may surprise you to find how many of those samples you already have in your sample library, if you've spent some time searching for samples already (it's very rare to find a drum sample that is totally unique without being off-the-wall or strange; a lot of the time, kits are just compilations made from other kits). Anyway, here's a question: where can I get good electronica hi-hats? If you've heard zwitra's Willed Assault, you know what I'm talking about. Solid, background-providing, in no way clicky or ringy, just totally awesome . So I'm looking for hi-hats like these. It's hard for me to distinguish individual hits because it's all so fluid thanks to zwitra's skill, but if anybody has more inisght than I do, I appreciate your input =). I probably already have samples like this somewhere, but I would have no idea that these are the right kind because, as I mentioned, I can't hear the individual hits.
  3. I like this alot =) it's a very clean mix, and really captures your attention. However, I had to stop it a number of times just to make sure I wasn't hearing something in the background along with the music; the harmony just didn't seem to fit, and the background was far too busy to provide backing for the flute lead. However, the percussion was high quality and obviously skilfully programmed, and the actual samples are very nice. Nice work, zwitra!
  4. ah i got it now, i messed around with that before, but never really knew how it worked. thanks alot xelebes. i even put it in my new WIP! how tasteful There's a much easier way. Simply adjust the snap value in that little black window way up there that probably says "Line" right now.
  5. Exactly. Hahah, DM Lee, you should experiment more, it would have saved you a whole lot of trouble (I couldn't imagine having to automate everything every time I wanted to make a tweak).
  6. wow, dude, you seriously need to be destroyed for such ignorance. the first part of the song was the chrono trigger part, from 600 A.D. the second part of the song was the xenogears part, from floating city shevat. therefore, the second part couldn't possibly catch even a nearly nonexistent fraction of "that CT feeling" since it is not even from the same game. sorry, ziwtra, don't mean to clog up your song review like that, but i felt it had to be said. anyways, this mix is just unstoppable. it does both the original songs' justice and has been on many of my compilation cds since it first appeared on OCR. your mixing skills are definitely formidable. -rob Hahah, you are incorrect. What I actually mean is the part after the whole windy pads and bells and stuff.
  7. It's true that the sounds are great. However, it doesn't rely on those sounds overly much. What it *does* rely on is the amazing orchestration. I don't mean arrangement, as in the actual progression/harmony/melody of the piece. I mean, the actual articulation and idiom of each individual instrument. Arrangement-wise, this is a very intense mix, and achieves the symphonic effect easily. A very nice mix, altogether. Great nuance, excellent musical and sonic tone.
  8. R is not Reverb. R is the "Release" stage of an envelope; the higher the R, the longer the note will continue after you release it, slowly decreasing in volume. Reverb is another thing entirely. For that, I would suggest looking at the basic help, like DarkeSword said, because it's not the type of question that anybody feels like answering (It's like answering "How do I put a note on the PlayList?" but it takes a lot longer to answer ).
  9. I think you can only get the CM or FM plugs from the actual magazine, or something =(. Anyway, mda JX10 rocks =D. It's got this really, really nice analog sound. You wouldn't think it would be very versatile, since it only has one waveform, but it can do quite a lot of things, and takes up barely any CPU. The sound is just silky smooth... it has no GUI, but still, I highly recommend it =). It does for analog and round what Synth1 does for digital and thin: high quality, useable sound.
  10. Don't you think it's pretty obvious that you ARE in fact using demos? It could be a bug or something, so I won't rule that out, but chances are you're using Sytrus or Wasp or SoundFont Player or one of those dealies. You're going to want to avoid getting too attached to those if you don't want to buy them =P (Sytrus will be especially hard not to get attached to).
  11. Is Psycle considered a tracker? I consider it a sequencer or digital studio with a tracker-style interface instead of a piano roll or something (all though piano roll and multi-pattern playlist are on their way =D)
  12. Yeah, out of all the Killer series, Ego is my favorite... although I don't like it all that much. Still, it's better than "MIndKillEr" or whatever it's called.
  13. Click the time. Anyway, here's an ordering question: Once you've ordered it (the downloadable version) what do you do? Do you get sent an e-mail with the download link eventually, or something? I've gotten the purchase verification e-mail, but I just need to know what to do now. Also: The lifetime free updates isn't just between like 4.1 and 4.5, right? It extends to 5?
  14. Does this guide have Psycle? EXCELLENT tool, and still in development.
  15. So, here's another question for you all. Do you find a use for samplers other than FL's built-in one? Specifically, drum samplers. People are always raving about "DR-008", "RM IV", not so much but "Battery", and I'm thinking that the appeal of these is basically just for people who use something that doesn't have a built-in sampler, or at least a sampler that's not as good as FL's. Is there anything I'm missing out on, or something? Does it help with the drum programming?
  16. Let me give you a little hint. Get the demo of fruity loops. I know you thinking i cant save but your wrong. Say you started a mix and you wanted to save it take each channel and copy it to a midi out channel. Then delete all of the other channles but leave the midi out. Then go to file-export-to midi. Then when you want to work on it some more open up the midi. When you are done and you think its time to add some good insturments. Dont use the vsts that fruity loops came with.(Vst are the things that create the sound ex:sim synth, plucked, etc). Download some new ones. The defult fruity loops vsts arent that great eather. Once you have all of you sounds made. Just export the song to mp3 and BAM. You got your self a mix. The default Fruity synths are not VST's. They're native Fruity format. Anyway, I think if you have the demo, it's a better idea just to keep it open than to try to work without automationa and synths and tweaking until the end... Anyway, PSYCLE
  17. For under $100 (I'm thinking US here, sorry) you would have to get the useless edition, I think. The one without the piano roll... ick.
  18. Problem solved, thanks to Xelebes! Apparently the Dashboard DOES have a use.
  19. Indeed. (What was the piracy protection feature you were mentioning, by the way?) Oh, yeah, and I'm going to bump my question. Not by quoting it, but by letting people once again know it exists, so it isn't forgotten. EDIT: Since it's on a new page, I am forced to quote:
  20. Here's a question: How do I control a control via MIDI Out? Let's say I have a Fruity Free Filter (my favorite Filter =) what the heck is the Fruity Filter good for?) and I want to control the filter freq on 3 separate channels, being the BD, SD, and HH of the percussion. I currently automate each one and then copy the automation and paste it into the other two, but that's ugly, unelegant, and unefficient, as well as prone to errors. So what I did was make a MIDI Out, and I want to use the knob on that to control all the other knobs; I may use a second knob on the MIDI Out to control the Res. How exactly do I configure the controls of the Fruity Free Filter to accept the MIDI Out? I go to "Link to Controller...", leave the MIDI Channel at 1 and change the port to 0, the port of the MIDI Out, but I don't really know what to do from there. Anyone know?
