  1. Most certainly not As with anything I'm sure it's possible to get the desired sound out of Miroslav's brass, but I've had it for like 2/3 of a year now, and in all my many hours of experimentation with different mixing and layering of solo and ensemble instruments with different articulation variations in different octaves and different reverb and eq settings (and plugins), I've come to terms with the fact that the brass section is just not that great for the "huge sounding" effect. That's not to say that the brass CAN'T be huge sounding, because it can (just rather poorly, to my tastes - certainly serviceable, but not exactly a pleasure to work with, and at least for me, not really satisfying in terms of sound), or that it doesn't have any redeeming qualities (it's very well-suited to the smaller ensemble, less aggressive stuff) - but compared to the strings, the brass really lags. Choir and percussion lag slightly too, but they're basically fine, whereas the brass is unsatisfying time and time again as I patch combi after combi... It'll be fun to try some experimentation I have a feeling the fact that the QL Brass is recorded in a different hall with different mics with a different goal and different players and different directors telling the players to do entirely different things is going to breath some fresh air into the mix when I combine QL Brass with Miroslav. Not sure how QL brass mixed with Miroslav brass will sound - that's one thing I'm curious about (I'm already almost certain the mix of QL brass with Miroslav everything-but-brass will sound fantastic! )
  2. Just ordered the brass I like this kind of deal - I think this is the first music-related purchase I've made that I haven't agonized endlessly over. Even though they charged me $15.00 for shipping ( ) the price is still basically a no-brainer Looking forward to working on some Star Wars/Cowboy Bebop/Kill Bill brass action thanks again for pointing this sale out to all of us! I think this brass library and IK Philharmonik are going to have a long and beautiful friendship.
  3. Thanks for this link Anyone have any tips on ULTIMATE STRINGS ROLAND or Quantum Leap Brass? Demo's for Brass were pretty great, strings not so much, but I think both will be helpful for me to layer with my current orchestral library (Philharmonik is great, but I need something more "generic" to mix in with it so it doesn't sound so emotional all the time). Anybody own/have heard of either of these libraries?
  4. Don't worry, there ARE free sequencers/plugin hosts! Buzz and Psycle are two popular tracker-style hosts. There are a number of other trackers that can load in audio plugins as well (I think ModPlug, at least, and check out BeroTracker, if I remember correctly). Not sure if the free Tracktion NFR offer ended, but if it didn't, that's supposedly a great app (especially for audio). I would recommend energyXT as inexpensive, full-featured, innovative, and astoundingly great, but if FLS Express is too expensive then energyXT is only a little less Also, don't worry about being 15 - both of my mixes currently on the site were posted when I was 15, and I'm not exactly an anomaly (see blake perdue and darkcecil13 )
  5. Sounds like Miroslav to me, but then again, every orchestra sounds like Miroslav to me right about now, since Miroslav is all I have and I play it for hours on end But seriously, my guess would be Miroslav. Maybe Star will pop in and shed some light on the subject. EDIT: I am informed that my guess was pretty bad
  6. The first time I listened to this, I didn't really enjoy the orchestral parts at all - second time I think they're pretty great, though! Just wanted to mention that I really enjoyed this. Great synthwork especially. Gotta love 2:18 and that whole section - that's my favorite part. If for nothing else, I recommend everyone to listen to this mix for the purpose of hearing this section. The crazy-pitched blips and insidiously catchy rhythm ... just so good it's the kind of groove that just doesn't come along often. The other superlative I want to commend Star for is the arrangement of the source-tune - it's more subtle than I personally normally prefer, but the way the elements are presented and woven in is extremely clever, if seemingly too sparse.
  7. I don't think it's experimental OR unpleasant, for the record. Regardless of whether you think it's good or not, I think this is most certainly 'experimental'. Your average song does not have this sort of extreme contrast, ultra-loud and supercompressed drums, etc. "Unusual" doesn't really mean "Experimental", as I see it. I would definitely say that it's not your average OCReMix, and that it features a number of elements that you don't tend to find, and that it possesses an intensity of a level that is not commonly found. So, it's definitely uncommon. But experimental music implies two things: 1) it's doing things that haven't been done before 2) it's doing things with the intention of simply doing what hasn't been done I would contend that the mix is more jazz than anything - I'm no genre expert, but that's my opinion. Experimental is rarely as melodic as this, and I wouldn't say that supercompressed drums are such a novel concept. It's original, it's uncommon, but I think the term "experimental" really doesn't fit it.
  8. Wow - this is pretty major work you're doing! A lot of people will want to know about this - we have to make sure the word gets out! Thanks for taking the time to sleuth around and not just letting the corruption slide.
  9. I really need to make a habit of reviewing mixes... Anyway, I just had to comment on this one. Talk about vibe fantastic piece of music! I can't stop listening to it - I think it's the way the drum rhythms mix with the melody and harmony. The only thing I didn't like was the ending - I think a fadeout would have been much more appropriate than the abrupt cut off. Overall, I really don't know what to say other than... ingenious. EDIT: I feel my commendation wasn't strong enough. EXTRA-SUPERB or something EDEDIT: I don't think it's experimental OR unpleasant, for the record.
  10. Yes I did, at least, and it was very helpful!
  11. Hey, now there's another PCR-80 owner! (aside from the ubiquitous PCR-30 owners) Is that the PCR-M80 or just the PCR-80? PCR is definitely the most cost effective option for a 61-key MIDI controller, IMHO, so you made the right choice But, you might ask, what were the fates of Rellik's holiday-season haul? (sorry about the sentence structure, I'm doing a Latin essay right now... if you can guess what parallel I seem to have drawn, you've probably read the Aeneid). As a Birthday/Hanukkah gift from my parents, I received the illustrious Miroslav Philharmonik software produced by the united forces of IK Multimedia and Sonic Reality. And a watch, and an amusing calendar, because how can you make music if you don't even know what time it is? How will you know when it's time for music? If I get the full scholarship that I'm hoping against hope for, then I'll be back to tell you all of the amazing abundances of software and hardware I'll be buying.
  12. Compy may have been central to the project and put months of his own work into it, but that doesn't mean he's not acting for what, in his opinion, is in Chrono Symphonic's best interests. (sorry, reading this, that was rather confusing - in the interest of not being misunderstood, it might clarify if I just say outright that it's a pro-Compyfox post )
  13. I just think the looks of the place are kind of ugly, that's all - the colors seem too bright for my tastes, the materials don't look particularly attractive, and the surfaces seem very flat and there aren't alot of embellishments. Just a matter of tastes. Thanks for the little demo - the hall sounds nice (rather subtle), and who is The Masamune by?
  14. Hey Claado, I don't care at all a name's just a name. Glad to hear you've made your decision, Compy - the place is kind of an eyesore, but of course it's the IR that counts.
  15. How about: "Thunder on the Ocean Floor" "Lights Beneath the Salt Foam" "Storm in the Lightless Sea" "Enter the Silent Deep"
  16. But I didn't come up with that name! I'd just been calling it "Chrono Trigger Undersea Thing"
  17. Secret anti-semitic/stereotyping message, or something else? (emoticon means I'm assuming it's the latter) Anyway, really looking forward to the final release. Should be a cool release with lots and lots of publicity and fan-mail and such - so much anticipation! And I want to hear how Compyfox made my track sound!!
  18. Really enjoyable I wanted to comment on the vocals thing, after reading a snippet of this comments thread. I think they are way, WAY far away from sucking - they are "beginnerish", but not to an extent that really damages the mix. Honestly, as far as I'm concerned, if the vocals are preventing you from enjoying the mix, that's your own problem. They're thoroughly adequate for a lead vocal, and actually pretty impressive overall. Of course, they sound a little too up close for my tastes - sounds like he's singing right up next to you while the band is playing somewhere up on a stage. What makes me cringe (not literally), more than the vocals, is that synth patch and its usage it's cool, but the way it interlays with the lead guitar makes it sound really, really muddy, especially since tonally they're so similar (in fact, through the mud, it could actually BE a guitar! sorry if I got it wrong ). The main section sounds like it's cut and paste right there after the intro - it has the jarring effect I'm sure was intended, but the transition ends up sounding very "unrealistic". Anyway, glad I heard this makes me want to learn to sing
  19. Hey Zeality, I haven't been corresponded (with)!
  20. Ok, good to hear you were able to get to it. (by the way, it's not Miroslav - it's about half SampleTank2 and half free SF2)
  21. Hey, I got back from my trip early! Is everything going smoothly with my entry and such? I am now ready to do things that can be done. Bliz, thanks for your comments on the WiP I posted - was in a hurry and didn't get a chance to respond (or at least I don't remember responding - I could check, I guess. )
  22. Hey, Compy, ask Claado to send you the file, if he hasn't - it's uploaded at my webspace, anyway. Sorry, am on vacation, must be brief.
  23. http://www.tjhsst.edu/~alederer/Music/CT_Rellik_WiP.mp3 is what I have so far. I'm fairly happy with how it's shaping up - the main problem is that I can't get what I really want during the heavy section due to unwieldy samples, and the light section isn't quite as "lush" as I think it should be, but it's, you know, shaping up. I've done a little mastering on it just so I get a better sense of what I'm doing during the process - I'll be sure to remove anything on the Master track that Compy wants me to.
  24. So this won't be my first piece made with Philharmonik after all... I went ahead and took the plunge on doing another expansive orchestral arrangement, once more armed with a lack of any reasonable set of tools. This is actually going much more smoothly - coming along at a much nicer pace than I expected. Am I allowed to post WiP's in this thread?
  25. No, it's fine, I've got a nice enough piano for my standards - the reason I'm doing piano is because I'm not really willing to try to do a full-fledged orchestral arrangement until I get my hands on Philharmonik Thanks for the info, Compy - mid-next-week is what I heard from Squids, too, although it could be as late as Monday (!!) Claado, I know this is a challenge for you, probably moreso than anyone else - everyone has crunch times sometimes . Obviously if I go the piano route, next Friday will be fine (since it's much less labor intensive) although it is quite a challenge so far - pretty fun, though.
