TheChargingRhino reacted to Ivan Hakštok in Dwelling of Duels 80s vs 90s Month - Listening party @ MAGFest + Impact Soundworks partnership
Hello! As you may or may not know, MAGFest is happening soon, and just like every year for the past decade, we'll be having a special month over at Dwelling of Duels, with a live listening party at MAGFest! Exact details about the listening party to follow.
The tradition is to pick a unique and interesting theme for the MAGFest duel, and this time it's...
    80s vs 90s Month

That's right, we're pitting two awesome decades against each other! Which had the better video games? Which had the better music? Which had the better video game music?
All of these questions will be answered this month. Artists can chose either the 80s or the 90s, and remix songs from a game (or multiple games) released in that decade. Featuring games from both decades in a single entry is not allowed. Other than that, all standard rules apply: http://dwellingofduels.net/rules/

Now, what makes this duel special, other than the live listening party, you ask? Well, we're happy to announce a partnership with Impact Soundworks! Top 3 artists (or groups/bands) will each get one library out of the following: Super Audio Cart, Shreddage Bass 2, Shreddage Guitar or Shreddage Drums. Fun fact: Shreddage Bass 2 was recorded by the ocremix artist, bass virtuoso and the person with the most DoD gold medals, Tony Dickinson a.k.a. Prince uf Darkness! But wait, there's more: entrants will be able to get a 10% discount on all Impact Soundworks libraries!

So, get your instruments ready, start making some music, and enter the duel! Deadline for submissions is January 3rd, 2017 at 1PM EST. Send your entries to dodsongs@gmail.com. If you come to MAGFest, be sure to drop by the listening party (80s or 90s fashion not required). We promise it's gonna be fun, as you can see in this video:

For those not familiar with DoD:
Dwelling of Duels is a monthly (or sometimes bi-monthly) video game music remixing competition started back in 2003. The focus is on live instruments: each entry needs to have a main instrument played live. A theme is picked for each duel and all the entries have to follow the theme. At the end of the month, listeners vote for the songs and a winner is decided. To this day, there have been:
    - 2778 entries, from
    - 1070 games, by
    - 714 artists, in
    - 154 duels, having
    - 167+ hours of music!

Yooka-Laylee is confirmed for Switch though, they're working really closely to make sure it still hits a Nintendo console.
I'm looking forward to Zelda as well, and KH2.8 is gonna be fun (replaying KH3D with new Dream Eaters is gonna be great). Also I'm still expecting KH3 to drop next December. So there's that.

Just wondering if anyone had an specific feedback on the Intro track I made? Since it's like the first track on the album (and probably the second track that a person would listen to after Corneria :P), I want to make sure it sounds good enough to do the rest of the album justice. BTW thanks for your "Sounds like Mass Effect" comment @TheChargingRhino, that was definitely of the feel I was going for

I PMed you a full review. I like!
    ___
Alright, everyone - hard to believe how time has flown, but here we are: check-in time!
So, as the first check in, all we require is a current WIP and acknowledgement that everyone is still on board. Now, I have 20 WIPs out of the 27 claims we have for the album; for those of you who have submitted a WIP already, you are in the clear so just post something here and you'll be fine. For the remaining 7 claims with no WIP, we would like to have something from you in the next two weeks - I'm starting the check in now to give you time to do so.
    Folks I'm missing WIPs from:
@The Nikanoru  - Titania (what a jerk) Prominion - Fortuna @Starphoenix - Boss B (you've sent me a sample, so I know you have a WIP you can send me!)  @M_Blacki - Sector Y @Ronald Poe - Space Armada @Trev - Bolse @Siolfor the Jackal - Sector Z We ARE still early in the project, so I'm not going for the hatchet right away. If you need a bit more time to finish up a WIP, please PM me and we'll see what we can do. That being said, if we do not hear from you, you'll have two weeks from the check in date to get back to me and/or DS394 or you will be cut from the project.
@DS394, @DaMonz, and I are going through all the tracks in the next two weeks or so to make sure all the current WIPs have comprehensive reviews from each of us. A couple of remixers are sending me updated WIPs almost daily; we're all pretty busy these days and I don't want to overload the other directors, so please, if you're going to send us an updated version to review, send us one more update before this time next week and we'll review that.
No scary stuff, guys. I am very happy with how all this is turning out; we have a great group of remixers here and I'm especially pleased with all the collaborative work going on here. Kudos to @Pichu's Dad and @M_Blacki for their help the last few weeks; @Jorito is also still available for audio support as well, even though he is now directing the Secret of Mana project - just be patient with him, he's busy!
    Some other stuff:
I'm getting my artist guy to start working on a promotional poster and the album cover art this next quarter. I'm going to try to stay in a space-y theme for the cover art, staying with the Lylat motif of the album itself; however, I've also asked @Etzaen to do some art for the 4 main characters, as we need some representation of the pilots as well as the ships. If anyone wants to submit other art, let me know and we'll see what we can do. I plan to submit this project for OCR approval within the next four months. I have set a goal for the project of 16 complete (not finished) tracks to submit with. I currently have 4 tracks I have labelled complete; if anyone is wondering what I mean by that, a complete track 'is a track with a full framework; one that has a beginning, a middle, and an end that are clearly defined.' This does not mean the structure is set in stone; that would be a finished track, which should only require minor mixing adjustments. There is another goal to get the project to 32 claims. We need 5 more claims to reach this goal; let us know if you want in or know someone who does! And with that..
    ALL SHIPS CHECK IN!

    Good morning!
I worked on this from near 3:00 P.M. to around 9:30 pm almost non-stop last night

    https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B1cNg5GTkCUIc1NpNEpLaW1ocGs
80's "Synthbeat" verson of Clipped Wings had landed.
I added  A LOT of stuff, tried to combine the other two version with this one
Even went and used the beginning synth for the current version through-out the song
tempo changes all over the place, too
tried to get everything equal, seems to be okay
you might want to lower your volume for the start, though
Classic, you're going to be super happy when you realized how I tied Clipped Wings with SCRAMBLE...
It's at the very end, though.
Redid the arps a bit at the end, too.

    Review, please!
This might be my best track yet!

Is this WIP not reach the end? It can be pretty tough to guage how a lot of what you've got going here affects the track as a whole. Sounds like it trails off at the end, so you're probably not done yet.
You're probably aware, but the master of this is VERY quiet. You're likely doing this for the sake of the album (I assume this is for the Lylat System CLEAR album), but on the boards here I do suggest maxing out the volume in Audacity (using the Amplify tool) prior to posting it. It lets people hear whether or not there are issues with the EQ or limiting easier; if it's not amp'd to the maximum, it can be tough to tell whether raising the volume would cause production issues. In this case you're lucky - I can push 14 dBs without issue - but it can be an issue for other tracks, and it's impossible for others to tell without the right tools at hand.
I like the overall soundscape, though. Synthwave sounds like a natural fit for this source. You've got to be careful with your instrument blend, though - with so much going on in the background it can be tricky to make the theme/melodies stand out without having them be crowded out by the other instruments. I hear some pulsing from time to time in the theme, so be careful with your mix and be sure the most important elements are coming through clean.
The introduction wears its welcome out pretty quickly, and it never feels like it picks up the pace to make up for it. It's tought to guage, though, since this might be an incomplete arrangement; in a 6-7 minute song the introduction could be satisfying, but a 3-4 minute song would suffer greatly because of it. Just as a rule of thumb: 20% is a decent length for an intro, and 25% should be the absolute cap. Anything longer will leave the listener unsatisfied with the rest of the track; long build-ups need large resolutions. This doesn't feel like a grand enough resolution for such a long intro.
There are some wrong notes in this arrangement. The passing note in the guitar at 0:18 is a half step too low, and every similar occurence (such as in the orchestra hits, at 0:41 for example) is also the wrong note. Compare to the actual source and listen to the difference - it's pretty stark. If you were using a MIDI for reference, always compare it to the actual source as well, whenever possible.
The bass has a few oddities in it, as well. At 1:30 it leaps up a tritone, which sounds pretty... janky. You should avoid leaps like that in the bass in particular, as they're difficult to lead into and out of in a way that doesn't sound disjointed and random. Following that, from 1:32 - 1:34 the bass clashes poorly against the theme, being a half-step higher than what's being played above it. I don't QUITE suggest moving the bass a half step lower, since that would be the exact same note as it was two chords ago, but it does need to be changed to something different.
I'm being pretty tough on it, but it does have a lot going for it. I like the soundscape of it, the arrangement has a lot of slick flourishes to keep it interesting and overall the production isn't too bad. I look forward to hearing a more complete version of it.

Definitely! Depending on who's interested and can give me good quality, I could make this arrangement much larger in an ez. Sheet music is how I typically get things done for games, lol.

No need to apologize - in fact, thank you for telling me now. I'll remove your claims.
    I'm curious to hear this.
Yeah, I know I'm being slow about putting the new SCRAMBLE WIP together with all the parts. Time to do music has been in short supply these last few weeks due to school, and I'm trying to get my own WIP going on top of the other commitments I've made.
Once you have something together, let me know. Always open to new ideas!
I hope to, once I get enough together to get a copy, but it's be a late Christmas present to myself if I do.
If you send it, I will post....

Thanks for the early feedback! Funny thing about the drums. I actually had more variations in earlier versions but stripped them down due to some issues, so I may sprinkle them back into the mix around the second repitition (which I wanted to change the melody there to make it a tad more unique anyways.)
Also, @M_Blacki it's not just you, the drum kick is a little weak. that's already on my list of next wave of revisions.

Perfect. In that case, I keep my recommendations but also add that I really like the bass line that's more isolated at the end of the track, but I didn't notice it throughout. Boost that a db or two, or fiddle with eqing the leads a bit lower in volume. The highest highs are a bit piercing I'm guessing around the 2 khz -5 khz range and that overwhelms the rest of the track. I like to listen to my music loud and I'm not able in this case. It's mostly a case of variation and balancing issues right now so it seems close to being done.

Of course you can join! @TheChargingRhino has given you a pretty good run-down of what we're up to - and yes, you can certainly claim Space Armada.
The tracklist is on the first page of the thread, but to save you a click, we have six tracks left open:
Title Theme or Great Fox Theme Sargasso Space Zone (or a Boss Theme) Fichina The Awesome Black Hole (with Map Select, hopefully) Space Armada Out of this Dimension Check out the Project Overview if you want to hear source tracks or see where we're at. In the meantime, I'll put you down for Space Armada; let me know if you decide to go with something else.
    Welcome aboard!
It's like PaRappa the Rapper says - you just gotta believe!
Thanks for rolling out the welcome mat again, Rhino.
This will take some work, as I'll have to copy everything over from the Box, update all the new links on the WIP page, then work out of two accounts every time I have an update.
I can do that, but it may take me a couple of days to get to. I will advise when I've got it done. PM me if there's anything specific you'd like to listen to in the meantime and I'll see what can be done.
