  1. Um... no? If he would cite his sources, he'd be respectable. Sampling has been a mainstay of the genre for ages, and personally, I consider it the only good thing about the genre. I hate Rihanna, for instance, but I love S.O.S.... why? Because it samples Tainted Love. Not just a little bit here and there - Tainted Love is the focus of the entire instrumentation for the song, which makes the song awesome. This is even cooler, because it samples something dear to my heart, namely, chiptune music. Yes, he should state where he got his music from, so this sort of thing doesn't happen. But I think everyone is missing the really important piece, as far as I'm concerned: a mainstream musician just sampled a chiptune. I want to see more of this!
  2. So, geez. I just realized: I clicked on Wip-OCR automatically, just now. Thought I'd clicked on UnMod, and got very confused. If OT is any good, I'll stick around for it, of course, but really, part of what made UnMod a great place was its essentially-unmoddedness. Not the porn, that's not what I mean - just the way you could post just about anything. It got abused, sure, but it also was part of the culture. People that abused it, by community consensus, would be ridiculed until they either stopped or left. Of course, .org is just as modded as OT will be. And I have this feeling I might like the OT mods more than the .org mods. So really, UnMod-as-we-knew-it is gone for good. Which is sad, cause it's been my primary home on the intarwebs for the past... geez, 4 years or so.
  3. Thank you muchlyl!!!! Yes, that many bangs were necessary, it's just that good. I hadn't bothered with this mod before, though I knew it was there - I didn't really mind the previous layout change (even though, I'll admit, the blue one is still hands-down the best-looking), and what with a 1440x900 resolution, the sidebar doesn't get in the way at all. But I just got back from Hawaii to discover that now, OCR has a layout I think looks like crap. So, I applied your layout instead, and while I still like the blue layout the best, yours is way better than any of the other current alternatives. So, thanks!
  4. "Scat" is also a synonym for "shit". Hence my rather brilliant name for a BEERmix I submitted, many aeons ago when BEER was running: "chocobo scat". Being that it was both random improvized vocal bits (scat), as well as a huge pile of crap (scat). Also, my favorite would have to be this ;P.
  5. It was for my girlfriend. She was quite happy about the find, and it helped greatly. P.S. Thanks! And as for overlong... it's basically nothing but the original vocal track, so complain at that, not at me . No, really: this was just for fun, basically all I did was splice bits of the spc file so it made sense in the context of the vocals.
  6. Just finished this bit of self-amusement; might amuse some other people as well, I figure. It's equal parts Bust a Move (by Young MC), and Bust a Move (the arcade game). http://www.cs.hmc.edu/~afield/mashups/neminem_-_Bust_a_Move.mp3
  7. The live performers thread would still be a reasonable place to post this, though...
  8. I like it. Can't say much more - yeah, it's cheesy, but the genre is cheesy. I'm not a huge fan of the genre... but it's a great cover for what it is.
  9. Glad to be of service! Yeah, I'm a huge fan of Dougan, even disregarding the lovely instrumentals he's provided us, and I always love sharing tips about good music with others - especially when it gets them to buy the album. Dougan's album was seriously one of the first albums I bought, legally, with my own money, too (and totally worth it) . Oh, yeah, also thanks for the GYBO thread bump. Oh, and also for the compliment.
  10. I'd noticed certain obvious similarities in title and lyrical content between these two songs, about a year ago, and wrote it down as an idea to mess with later. Well, a year later, I sat down and messed with it, and only a few hours later, I had a finished product. I've never had a song come together so quickly before. Anyway for people who like Dougan or NIN or just like amusing mashups, I give you Only Me (and Dougan): Rob Dougan - There's Only me (instrumental and vocal versions) + Nine Inch Nails - Only (vocals and various bits - thanks, Interscope!) neminem - Only Me (and Dougan) Other mashups, of course, continue to be found at http://www3.hmc.edu/~afield/music/mashups.html Let me know what you think!
  11. Nope - I've never had to commute. All my work has been right on campus. Someone shoot me already, that was pretty horrible. So you're saying that it's never been the case that right on campus, all your work has been? That sentence doesn't even parse, so I have no idea what joke you were going for. On the other hand, a joke you could have made would have involved parsing my sentence as stating that while I've been on campus, I've never turned in work that hasn't been right. Which I certainly wish were true...
  12. Nope - I've never had to commute. All my work has been right on campus. Someone shoot me already, that was pretty horrible.
  13. Thanks for the reminder. I am in I remember when I tried this a few years ago, I was finding a bug where my team kept getting reset to 0; lets see whether that still happens (probably not; this was years ago, on a different computer).
  14. I wouldn't say the errors are unnoticeable. I definitely noticed them, and they are a minor distraction. Obviously, you can't play a live piano track without a few mistakes, but it would have been nice to have gotten a couple more takes, so the number of them could possibly have been minimized better. However, I say this only because it's so good. When I saw one of the new posts was from JigginJonT, I was excited, and justifiably - arrangement-wise, this is just as good as anything he's done before, and JigginJon is one of my favorite arrangers, on this site or any other. I listened to this song 3 times so far, and it hasn't gotten any less interesting than it was the first time. In fact, I could even say that this song makes up for the inexplicably bad mood I've been in the past couple days. Would just have liked to see fewer tiny - but not unnoticeable - mistakes, because this song was too close to perfect to not be perfect. I could also mention that the section from about :32 to about :52 in which he pretty much didn't do anything, was a bit too long of a pause. But whatever. Jon! Make more music, faster!
  15. Oh, by the way, I hate rapidshare. I hate enough that you should redirect people here instead.
  16. Dang, way to make me think you'd put new material up, that I hadn't already heard before. Ah! Alright, you put in a few more seconds on Bag It! than I'd heard previously, so I'm happy. I suppose I'd pay a few bucks for a net release, or possibly up to 10 for a real, pressed cd with good art and everything, if there were enough good mixes on it to justify buying. So yeah. I already knew about this (and have told you that it's an awesome idea several times). It's an awesome idea. Even if I hang out on GYBO a lot too, so when I think of the word "remix", I do still think, "tracks that sample the original but use primarily original samples". Remix in this case being opposed to mashups, which are tracks that sample original songs and use only at most a small quantity of samples that were made by the song creator. Anyway, I might get back to you on songs later, knowing now that you want them. By later, I mean "next time I feel like listening to OSTs".
  17. You do know we have two of those here, right? Ok, fine, you caught me. I'm still ridiculously excited by the concept. *fanboy-sqees*
  18. Just bought it, like 3 seconds before I came over to OCR and saw this thread . I wouldn't say 16 bucks is really expensive, but it's 15 bucks plus making sure she reads a couple books that she will almost certainly love as much as I do, but which she'd probably forget to buy on her own, no matter how much I talk about their awesomeness. Also, believe me - it amazes me just as much as anyone that I got to vote for anything other than "I smell, and no girls will have me". Nice timing, too - it wasn't at all intentional that I asked her out right before Valentine's, it just worked out that way. And turning into a werewolf was this weekend. No, seriously, I was a werewolf on Saturday - I got the most awesome werewolf bite evar. Specifically, I bit someone in the back of a group of people who were stuck together, and then they all had to hang on as the guy in the middle went insane and started stabbing people. Yes, I am talking about a game, just in case you were getting confused and/or scared.
  19. I actually take pride in my low post count. Case in point, I plan to resign from the panel on the day I hit 1000. Less posting, more judgeing, then. Wouldn't the judging inherently increase his postcount? I always assumed the judging panel, being a subforum, acted just like any other subforum but with posting privilages given out massively less frequently.
  20. Cait Sith's theme, '60s jazz lounge style. You know you want to, and so do I. (Although I don't think jazz is your usual style, if I recall. Cait Sith sounds more like it's right up JigginJonT's alley.) Yes, yes, yes, oh my god, very much yes! Every time I listen to the Majestic Mix Uematsu Tribute album, I think how much more awesome the Cait Sith track could have been with live jazz vocals instead of the purposefully-fake-sounding vocoded vocals. Don't get me wrong, I love vocoders a lot... just not in jazz. So every time I play the track, I end up singing along; then it sounds better .
  21. Yeah, this sounds pretty awesome. <..< >..> Anyone need a baritone and/or tenor? I might actually have figured out how to record without sounding like crap, now.
  22. Oh, awesome. I'm gonna show up for this one, smack me if I don't.
  23. Oh, cool. Didn't see this before; anyway, Tetris Attack is an awesome game, though I've played it mostly via rom, and in situations where the sound should be off (I'm sure you can think of what those might be ), so I don't have any particular fondness for the music. Nonetheless, I'm happy to see projects for games whose music have not been widely appreciated, as that's part of the draw of the site, in general. I also know one frosh at my school who would be happy to hear about it (she's freaky good at the game, as well as rather addicted). I'll also most likely be happy to mirror, by the way. Let me know if/when that becomes relevent.
  24. So yeah. I hear that you guys might be wanting an additional mirror? If so, let me know how big the zip would be, and I'll let you know whether I could help. I've got pretty darn near unlimited total bandwidth, but fairly limited size (on the order of maybe a 100 megs, if I scrap a bunch of other stuff that's currently there).
  25. Only RealPlayer and RealAlternative will allow you to listen. I know how you feel - I use Winamp for just about everything as well. It should be noted that a Winamp plugin does exist, called Tara, to play realmedia files... but it's not the most reliable. It hasn't worked for streaming vgf in ages. So I have RealAlternative for that, which actually works quite well, and unlike RealPlayer, doesn't adware up your system.
