DFD wise with GPO, you'd probably be fine without it if you have a decent amount of RAM. Actually, when the GPO Kontakt player first was updated so that it had DFD, Garritan himself recommened turning it off because GPO wasn't optimized for it and it worked better loading the samples into RAM. I'm not sure if they changed that or not in one of it's newer updates

Does garageband even use asio drivers? i didn't think it did... Anyways, I don't think you'd need anything like asio4all for macs. In general they are better for audio stuff than the built in audio on pc's. I have an axiom 61 and have had no problems with it what so ever with my Macbook Pro (using Logic Pro) concerning latency. It's probably just how you have your settings. Edit: I didn't read quite right and see that you're having these problems with FL and not specifically with your Mac. Asio4all may help, but I agree that spending like 100 bucks and getting somethign like an M-Audio Audiophile would probably give you much better results (former long time PC user speaking here).

You were very close to purchasing one of Mackie's fuck-ups Though I heard it was good if you didn't have to route anything. Really? When I was researching it I didn't read any major complaints and the few people I talked to that had one had only good things to say about it for the most part.

I still personally think that mackie mixers are good for the money. I almost bought an Onyx 1220 several months ago, but then decided that I didn't really need a mixer (more of a want thing) and that my money was better served in a different product. But I really don't think that getting a mackie mixer can ever really be considered a bad choice.

If you check either guitar center or musician friends website, they both have the online prices listed as $600. Unless it was a mistake then it looks like you can get it online too.

Well, some people like the really cheap mixers fine, but in some of the other forums I go to I've seen way too many people complaining about their 50-200 dollar Behringer mixers. I really do think that you're better off quality wise spending the money on a 1 channel pre amp, since most people don't usually record more than one track at a time.

Like Yoozer said, you'll need some sort of a preamp, either on your audio interface, a mixer, or a stand alone pre. I'd recommend against getting a small cheap mixer (like a Behringer) because they'll add a lot of noise to anything signals that goes through them. If you have several things that you need to plug in, like a few mics and external synths, a mixer could be useful but just remember that the amount of tracks that you can record at once will be limited to the amount of inputs your audio interface has, not by your mixer. Why would there be something wrong with this? If you don't like it, you don't like it. They're both good sequencers, but very different work flow. Just go with what makes you the most comfortable.

Definitely, there really isn't much that the SM57 can't do, especially given it's price. And actually in most rooms an SM57 would probably give you a better recording than a nice condenser cause it doesn't pick up as much room noise. A condenser mic will pick up EVERY noise in the room. There are noises I didn't even know existed in my room until I plugged in my NT1A.

Holyshitomg it's good. I just recorded a light, fingerpicked arrangement while construction guys were drilling holes in my walls, and the recording still came out rich and pristine, and with zero background noise. I think it's a safe bet that it will be replacing my Yamaha as the acoustic I'll be using in all my mixes. Great to hear you like. Actually, out of all the people I've ever talked to that have gotten an Acoustic Variax, I haven't heard a single complaint.

All of the top of the line Mac systems have been dual core or dual processor for a while now, and all of the major sequencers on Mac support them (Logic, DP, and cubase), though, oddly enough, Logic doesn't support the Dual dual core (quad core as they call it) 2.5 ghz G5 Powermac... which is odd, yet cubase can use all 4 cores.

Why don't you just get Overture 4? (unless you're on a mac... since they seem determined to not release a mac version of it.... )

Also, just to warn you. Logic does have a bit of a learning curve. There are quite a few seemingly simple tasks that are a little harder to do than I think they should be. That being said, once you figure out how to do them, it's a breeze.

The academic version of Logic Pro 7 is $500. The problem with that is that you can't upgrade to Logic 8 with it when it comes out.

I'm with analoq. Go Logic Express. I'd go for the non academic one, so you can upgrade it to the Logic Pro or at least to Logic Express 8 whenever it comes out. Plug in wise, Logic would definitely comes with the best set of included plug ins.

No. For one channel, what's the point? Really... Besides that, most small cheap mixers will actually add more noise into your recording that a DI box of equal cost would.

I actually thought that the Novation Remote series was a pretty cool controller. The problem I have with it is that it doesn't seperate the pitch and mod weels. Ohter than that though, it looks like a pretty good controller to me. Hope you enjoy it.

Also, what types of chords are you using to connect them to your sound card? And how long are those cords? And there probably won't be any ill effects from leaving your pre on all the time. I know my mic is almost almost always plugged in and active. I forget who ( I know it was somebody who makes a living recording other people at another forum I go to) but it was recommended to me if I wasn't going to put my mic away when I wasn't using it that it was better if I just left it on.

God is full of bugs and very CPU intensive? Ok, I use Kontakt 2 for most all of my instrumental plug ins. I could probably name more things that annoy me about it than I could things that impress me about it. That having been said, I think it's a very good product and at this moment the best product of it's kind out on the market (imo). I think that the scripting abilities of it alone are worth the price.
