Sonic 3 & Knuckles: Project Chaos - History
Rexy replied to k u n g f u c h i c k e n's topic in Projects
Interesting punch line, man. Although it makes me wonder why so many people are aiming for Sky Sanc...* Mind, I'd love to give a shot at Ice Cap, however I've got a lot of other projects on my hand as well as the WIP that I currently have here. Whichever happens, I hope it'll work in fitting the legacy that coverage has left behind already. *Anyone who opted for it for the pure purpose of my take on the theme being utter crap will get a kick in the teeth -

Well, they do share the same background synth progression, but not melody lines Then again, whatif he's using Lava Reef as an Easter Egg or something? That could always be a possibility. Anyhow, I'll be interested to see how it develops -

The only difference is that the Sonic 3 credits theme is never applied in Sonic 3 & Knuckles; similar thing to Sonic 3's act 1 boss theme. Hope that expands on that theory -
OCR01339 - Final Fantasy "Warriors of Light"

I remember this from the Sonic Revolution contest. Without a doubt this was the best technical performance I witnessed there, as well as enough interest within the composition to easily live up to the Darangen name. In my opinion he had a rough contest with zircon, which I feel has left me somewhat struggling on the overall marking scheme between the pair of them. Anyhow, it's about bloody time he got more stuff up onto the site. As a judge within the competition I'll reflect back to my track commentary, which can also be seen via the Judges' Comments page and my VGMix review. Funnily enough most of my qualms seemed to match with Pretzel's... Anyhow, well done with your position out there, and best of luck with your future works Mike. -
6 hours and 40 minutes... Talk about a long session, and I understand why - a rambling pretzel and a lot of drunken antics are good enough for any of us to take on cue. Again, good to see that came through, and best of luck for VGF56 tonight. Patience, o wing deprived one - good things come to those who wait. That, and shows 51 and 54 still need to be taken into consideration...

There's another thing that I should have asked sooner - what explains the orange text on the front page? -

Just in time for the deadline, I've managed to finish off the composition for my own contribution - OMG PLZ RIGHT CLICK AND SELECT "SAVE TARGET AS" FO SHIZZLE Quickly mentioning what I intended again - the first half reflects upon the scenery of the first act, as peaceful as ever and with blue skies flapping around it. This half then ended with a climatic proportion as signalled by the zone's mid boss - you know, that machine that ends up putting the whole island in flames. The second half then shows a good amount of grief over the island's fate. No longer is it full of peace - it will take a long time just to recover from its own tormented state. Angrily, the player (controlling Sonic, Tails or Knuckles) makes their dash through the second act, gradually regaining their feelings while going around the many pitfalls that eventually lead to the zone boss as well as the Hydrocity Zone upon kicking the crap outta Eggman. I managed to take in the account of lowering the drum volume ever so slightly and adding some reverb onto the muted trumpet. And I also thought carefully about how to reflect on anger at the end of the first half and the return of the core instrumentation within the second half; things that came to mind here were angry distortion (which have been applied upon some synth VSTs floating around the college campus), a steadier drum beat and a lot of timpani action. Well, that's about it from me (for now); hope this is an improvement over the previous version -

From what I heard from Nuts, he's got some big plans on his sleeve Anyhow, might as well mark in my progress. I've finished the scopes of my own arrangement, and with a bit of hope I should master it down and send it in time for the deadline. Just to let you know that I'm not dead... yet -
Well, according to the campus landline I'm expected to pay 5p a minute. Shouldn't be too bad

Speaking of phoning in, I really need to do that sometime in the coming month or so. I got the phone number and a good list of instructions on how to go through international calls, but is there anything else that needs to be established beforehand? Best of luck for ep 56, tho

You WTFed a larger than normal amount of VGF goodness??? I...I...wait till you see show #50... Actually, it's your math tuition that got me WTFing all over I'd still be around for ep 50...

10PM-1:30AM = 5 and a half hours? Ahem... groovy, #49 is out. Somehow I've got high hopes for this one, given the Xenogears related content and the appearance of many of the show's regulars. Good luck with the remaining shows too, heh. Nothing wrong with dark skinned people - I find them to be cool to get along with in person.
-
I feel you man - we haven't had any MP3s released for this show in 3 weeks. For those who haven't seen the thread on that subject, I for one am really anticipating the Xenogears Light goodness that's going to come out of #49

As far as I know, the choice of the samples isn't something to take in mind - it's how they're applied. Mind, I saw this to be an awesome mix at VGMix and I equally appreciate it here. A great debut for Akuma in his own right. Course, for me repetition may be shown as a light issue, but given the popular music format of the 80s I'm sure that can be lifted. Robbie himself was just as excited about all this - he even sent me a private message in person. I also need to quote something else from him: Does that answer any FL haters' questions?

Have a nice time out there hobo Hopefully we should have some surprises waiting for when you come back. Mind, for some odd reason I have the urge to arrange one of the sources for piano; may end up taking a while to provide something though -
The moral of this event: Never trust an electrician to repair stuff on time. Sorry the show got cancelled again; must have been a real downer to Spring Break. But hopefully I'm sure the make-up shows will come down the line as well as episodes 49-51. Fingers crossed...

OCR01331 - Final Fantasy VI "Shadows Among the Ruins"
Rexy replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I remember this mix - it won Sonic Revolution, didn't it? Even within the contest's aftermath I have still managed to enjoy the piece as a whole, most notably for a wide amount of technical strengths as well as compositional efforts that aided in generating what I feel is zircon's best mix yet. As a judge there, I'll copy and paste my commentary on the piece right here (which can also be viewed on this page). Hopefully zircon should be able to keep going after what he has faced here - as far as I'm concerned his mixes just keep getting better and better -

Hey, Upthorn. Thanks a bunch for the commentary concerning my WIP, and I'll be sure to take note on some of your material into account. Heck, the reason why I implemented a fade-out at the end was that I still have another minute of music to write to add to the nature of the second act, at least with a more climatic closing sequence and a planned transition into the next source in line (Hydrocity Zone). I did notice some of your problems though; Yeah, that's just me going overboard with the drum composition, I guess. Those were the same problems I had with the earlier versions of Sixty Feet Under, although I'm sure I'll fix that for the next revision. Yeah, suppose that can be fair. The reason why I ended up making it that way was that I was already running out of time when making the WIP, so I had to copy over a few trace elements from the first half to fill the space up. I'll see if I can look into that area over time. I told you I still needed to work on the second half Anyway, I'm sure to keep on going as soon as opportunities arise again. Meep. -

heh, thanks ^^ interesting you mentioned the volume issues, because I had the same problem with the WIPs of my Sonic 2 work at VGMix. Might be the overdose on the percussion levels (again) or something, but when I approach the file again I'll see if I can look into it. As far as I'm concerned, composition comes before production techniques, although I'm still thinking on about reverb application. Looking on at your work man, I for one thought the ideas have managed to work well so far, and have worked in portraying the menacing nature of the final boss. Very thoughtful. If there's something I could suggest at this point it could be towards the drum processing; I thought you swamped the snare with too much treble EQ, as it sounds more like a NES snare more than the industrial type you seemed to be aiming for here. Nonetheless, let's hope this project works on well ^^ -

Yeah, just had to come somewhere down the line... Anyway, I just want to let you know that I have been working on my contribution for the project. It may be a bit dense right now, and even here it's practically unfinished, but it's as much as I could go through before Easter break. Right-click here and select "Save Target As" in order to download the file. Might as well tell a bit about what I did. The music in both acts of the Angel Island Zone, although similar, seem to portray a different range of melodic values as a whole. The first half of the piece portrays the island at peace, all leading into a light fast-tempo segment that signifies meeting up with Eggman's fire machine thing. The second half - which I admit still needs work - showcases the pain of the island, burning into rubble and appearing of more of a hellish nature; even with that painful image in mind, the player still needs to go on to defeat Eggman and reclaim the Chaos Emeralds, even if it does take several zones at a time. Thanks for your time, good sirs and madames ^^ -

Not yet, but I'll clobber anyone who dares come up with Hedgehog Heaven II -
Hey, I don't see that as your fault man. More likely it'll be mine for not exposing any photographs of myself from the shoulders down And yea, suppose Star could be taken into account on this one. But who gives a toss about real-life appearance anyway? It's the music that counts, heh.

That quote came from Gothic_Fairy_Princess, or OverCoat. Then again, almost anything could be expected from him. But yeah, I found that to be an awkward surprise as such; not exactly the best thing to see first thing in the morning, but I'll try my best not to be so rash next time. Ironically, I don't know what to expect from yanks on a Saturday night ;
