I'm not too concerned production wise - I personally felt you had one of the more creative interpretations in the entire round, so color me surprised by your work in that field. Still, as long as you keep up your strengths and work on your criticisms, I'm sure you'll be able to go places. Who knows, maybe you'll get to pick a source tune someday
-
Aaaah, I completely suck; I never got a chance to apply the bonuses before now, which is like... nearly 2am out here. >.> Either way, even when applying them, the positiones haven't changed, so for those who aren't familiar enough already, here we go. Total number of mixes: 4 Total number of votes: 6 Highest possible score: 18 ziniz begun his time at PRC with a last place wooden spoon worth 6 points. binweasel polka-dotted his way to third place with 12 points. Chickenwarlord made a leisurely stroll to second place with 13 points. And the winner of PRC117 is Sir Nuts with 17 points! Mike, you know the drill. I expect a PM in my inbox by Friday. Alternatively, I'll have MSN in use all day tomorrow so if it's possible to discuss the source tune there, then we can do so. It turns out that by this stage, I'm not in any employment yet, so it seems as if I'm sticking as PRC host for a little while longer (possibly for the rest of the season). Odds are that once I'm done with PRC130, I will most likely pass the torch to bundeslang unless there are any objections to it. Either way, I will catch you all on Friday, more on time than tonight would ever be.

Yeah, OCR's downtime has pretty much influenced how this PRC is going to go. Oh well... The mixing stage was over a long time ago. I might as well bring up the voting stage now so that you know before the site goes down again. You're to visit the ThaSauce link and fill out the form at the bottom of the screen, placing three of the mixes from first to third with a reasoning attached. Contestants are encouraged to do this as they will get a bonus 3 points if they do so. The winner of PRC116 (OneUp) has a vote that will count twice. You have until Tuesday, April 8th at 12 noon EDT to cast your vote. The winner will get to choose the source material for PRC118! Binweasel - Folks, Nothing to See Here Chickenwarlord - Slow Down Sir Nuts - Mainframe Directives ziniz - Keep Dancing OR I KEEL YOU

Yeah, now that I think of it, this is a big comparison that I can see between what was my youth and what the youth of today have to endure. Think about it - most of us ended up weilding controllers with nothing more than just a d-pad and 2 action buttons (maybe 3 if we were Sega kids). We were given the basics as a means to introduce ourselves to gaming as a whole. Then as time went on, more and more stuff gets thrown in in each passing generation, like added action buttons (mainly 4 or 6 depending on the controller), shoulder buttons, analog sticks, motion functions and the like - it sounds like a lot for a youth of today to end up taking in, or so we think. So, how are we expected to get more youths introduced to gaming while escaping from the complexity of it all? That seems to get me thinking depending on the age of the child itself. The first gaming experiences for two of my younger cousins was the more recent Super Princess Peach, which seemed to show a laid-back setup to introduce their target demograph. By that I see it to work well for the girls, though it makes me think where are boys going to go. I have a younger cousin about 5 who can't even get through the first level of New Super Mario Bros (though it's amazing on how he can at least get to the first checkpoint), yet although I know he's going to steady himself in time, it's really tough to find a means to introduce someone of his type to gaming without resorting to the cartoon cash-ins (namely Shrek and the like). I find it weird that we as initial gamers ended up embracing simple setups while the kids tend to end up going through the more complex ones; maybe not straight away, but they could adapt to the situation a lot faster than we did (hence the RF discussion earlier). I bet nostalgia is undeniably going to vary from person to person too due to this, but we should at least appreciate games for what they are, not for how old they are.
-
Gaming is a weird experience for me. Myself, I juggle a lot of the old and new stuff so whether it makes me feel old or young doesn't seem to baffle me. I bet it's leaning more to the latter though as when I was young, I rarely ever had anyone to talk to about my gaming experiences and I was paid extra pocket money for every end-level boss that I didn't chicken out of and give my father the controller to have a bash at. Nowadays, I'm the kind of gamer that has homed their reflexes enough to get through most situations and can appreciate whatever that's given rather than trying to be a fanboy for a certain fad (I was a Sega/Sony kid but found loves with Mario and Kirby later on, and for Crash and Spyro my feelings aren't confined strictly to the games from their initial creators like most so-called "fans" are). You know the kind of gamer that I could potentially be - the kind of person to look a generation or two behind, keep up with the modern stuff and still play some really old stuff in little time at all; the kind that somehow ends up with Tales of Symphonia, Super Mario Galaxy and Mega Man 2 on the go in the space of a week, for example. I just see gaming as a pleasure of mine, something to escape from the real world to end up partaking in. It's only ever going to make me feel old if in five years from now, you feel as if you're starting to grow out of it all and games you remember as a kid become increasingly cuter and sickeningly unbearable as time would go on, like it's trying to end up doing to Kirby right now and has been doing after Kirby 64's release. (Someone needs to bring back Shimomura as a director; Sakurai's material, even Dream Land and Adventure, are too leniant for their own good.) This is a rare out-of-the-Competition-forum post by Rexy. Ignore or respond at your own will.

OCR01698 - Cheetahmen II "Livin' Large!"
Rexy replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Shouldn't this be under Action 52? I thought the music appeared there first before coming into Cheetahmen II (along with the theme for Fuzz Power, which was also transferred over). Anyway, I don't think there's much else to say concerning the track other than that he approached what is theoretically the worst game EVER and made a remix that actually somehow made the game sound half decent. A very straightforward route in terms of style, but heck, there was still a lot of interpretation to ensure that there was enough balance between familiarity with the theme and personal interpretation, so all's good. I believe the FF9 bit in the middle was needed to add some much needed countermelodic work for the end portion of the original track's melody line, so clever stuff there too. Get in there AnSo - I bet the Japanese scene and Cheetahmen fans everywhere are in love by now (And btw djp, the last I checked, they were a THREESOME - Aries, Apollo and Hercules, unless there's some secret one that I don't know about.) -
The People's Remix Competition 117 PRCv5-13 Hello everyone and welcome to the People's Remix Competition! PRC116 saw a strong heap of Mega Man coverage; not quite as optimistic as the turnout to Shade Man but as far as this season has gone we received one of the strongest turnouts there. Anyway, amidst the lot, it was a genre mashup fron OneUp that ensured the chooser of this week's source tune. We've degraded to the blue bomber's origins - the NES - and we're still bombing around but with different kind of bombs altogether. Seen as a Bomber Man spin-off in Japan, our detonations expert for this round is ZED, seen launching his explosives towards the evil that is the Xantho empire. Robowarrior - Keep Moving (First Stage) MIDI | MP3 | NSF (track 2) You heard what he said. Get cracking. Or if you don't have any accordions, kindly ask OverCoat to lend his GOOD LUCK! Fine Print: PRC instructions If you happen to be mixing this song already, start over in the interests of fairness. Limitations at ThaSauce require your entry to be 6MB or less in size. Length for length's sake and MIDI rips are not allowed. Entries must be posted in the ThaSauce link by NEXT SATURDAY, April 5th at 4:59 am Eastern US Time. You may enter as many mixes as you like and work with as many people as you like on each mix. Do not make qualitative comments on an entry until the results of the vote have been posted. Mixers cannot vote for themselves but if they vote they recieve a free first place vote added onto their score. The winner of the previous contest can't take part but their vote will be doubled. It often begins on Friday evening in my country. Apparently it's a few hours late out here since it HAD to start on a day when I'm sick. Still... come rain, snow, sleet and shy guys, I'm going to deliver. It'll be there before you know it.
-
Actually, it's a mistake on MY part. o_O The entries there were unanimous so we didn't do any ThaSauce voting. Instead, I've got everyone's blurbs there and I was meant to send them all batched together. You've just reminded me that I STILL need to do that. Anyway, the PRC is over. Now, let's see who ended up being one step closer to Dr Wily and who got defeated before they could use a single energy tank. Total number of votes - 10 Total number of mixes - 5 Highest possible score - 30 Bundeslang begun his PRC time with a last place wooden spoon worth 6 points. Chickenwarlord scraped his way into fourth place with 9 points. setokaibarocket and V both said "g'day" to second place with 18 points each. And the winner of PRC116 is OneUp with 21 points! I guess genre mash-ups are a key component for interesting competition, and you managed to pull it off well enough to get this far. You know the drill now; I'm now expecting a PRC source tune by this Friday, and I'm sure you know what's generally required of the source tracks. Thanks for your input everyone, and I'll see you all next weekend for PRC117!

Okay, so NOW we can get the voting stage off to a flying start. So, this is what you're going to do. You're going to visit the Compo ThaSauce page and submit your vote at the bottom; you will select three mixes and organise them from first to third with a reasoning attached to it. Contestants are encouraged to do this as they will obtain three more points to their score if done. The winner of the previous contest (Sir Nuts) has a vote that will be doubled, so make sure you impress him. Due to ThaSauce's downtime, you will have until Tuesday, March 25th at 12 Noon EDT to make your decision. The winner will get to pick the source tune for PRC117! bundeslang - Above the Clouds Chickenwarlord - Fluffy White Things Man OneUp - MegaMegaMix setokaibaraocket - Lan Party V - Waffle Dills in Clouds
-
And that is why I can't even get the voting stage started yet. :\ I'm sure it'll pass after a few hours.
-
Bah, it happened again! Copy-paste for the lose. It's fixed tho!

PRC115's Donkey Kong related contest gathered a decent amount of interest, making it a case of the regular versus the newbie versus the returner. And it was that returner that came through with the win - Sir Nuts pulling through with a chilled take on the source. We're still with the SNES this week, and amusingly enough this game was released the same year as Diddy's second outing. What contrasts this though is that monkeys have been swapped for robots and instead of Crocodile Isle, it's a case of "welcome to 20XX". You'd better not have left Item-2 back home! Mega Man 7 - Cloud Man's Stage MIDI | MP3 | SPC How quaint; Shade Man was covered for the first ever PRC anniversary, and I never thought I'd see the same game return under my watch of the contest. But hey, time flows like a river and we might see history repeat itself... maybe...? GOOD LUCK! Hey, don't worry about it. I thought you didn't do too bad for your first time through, and I'm sure the bits and pieces will be picked up with practice. I hope you participate in the future. (The picking the nose part wasn't meant to degrade you or anything; I just took your mix title and description on the C:TS page, put two and two together and saw it that way. )

Aaah! I forgot that you Americans already put your clocks forward, so I might as well be prompt with the results of this compo. Just you wait til WE put our clocks forward as well... eh, nevermind. Total number of mixes - 3 Total number of votes - 5 Highest possible score - 15 Chickenwarlord receives yet another last place wooden spoon with 7 points. Knives picked his nose (o_O) all the way to second place with 9 points. And the winner by an unanimous decision is Sir Nuts with 15 points! Welcome back to the PRC clan, Mr. Molina. Now that you managed to take your first win in quite a while, it's time to push you to make your selection on the source tune for PRC116. I doubt I'd be on MSN much for this week due to healing a dental injury, but please send me a source tune when you've got one. Hopefully if things go down well, we should at least get PRC ready for this coming Friday. Be there, gentlemen!

The mixing stage is over. Now it's time to get with the voting. There are three mixes here, so this is what you're going to do. You should go to the ThaSauce page and fill out the form so that you arrange the mixes from first to third, with a reasoning attached to it. Contestants are encouraged to vote as they will get 3 extra points if they do so. The winner of PRC114 (that's me!) will have their vote doubled. You have until Wednesday, March 12th at 4:59AM EST to make your decision. The winner gets to choose the source material for PRC116! Chickenwarlord - Diddy's Done It! I looked at the two themes. Given that you're so willing to contribute something for Vigorous Town, I'll let you keep it. Myself, I think I can form something out of Euclid. If I get any updates regarding progress for it, I'll inform the project managers about it.
-
Don't worry, I haven't been around much albeit for different reasons altogether (like, I'm bound to get into employment before the year is out). I can understand your feelings though, hope you get better soon

...so this means I have to go back to the drawing board, again? I know Kyle was seeking for help on the Phantasia side but it's hard to find something worth approaching that HASN'T been given coverage yet. :\
-
Time to add some brief notifications myself to get some activity going: - Beated ToS today (woohoo!) and may I say, what a ride - I'm still concerned for some of the slackers, so mind if I take up Vigorous Town? I've got pretty much a free week ahead. - Continuing to reference to point 1, I am now SO looking forward to hear what LuiZa and CHM have done with Fatalize after hearing it so many times just fighting Abyssion and Seles! Pure genius
-
Two VGMix tracks and another at Newgrounds? :\ Well, I do appreciate your attempt to stand me corrected, but you know how OCR feels over the whole "interpretation and lack thereof" issue that we see here. I haven't listend to Zero Bass's attempt though, but given my lack of impression on some of his other works I don't think I'll be game to see much of an improvement.

D'oh! Notepad fails again. Thanks for pointing that out.

The People's Remix Competition 115 PRCv5-11 Hello everyone and welcome to the People's Remix Competition! PRC114 had a late start, but its Fire Emblem related contest sparked up a decent turnout regardless with a quant trio of entries being submitted for it. And once again, you guys wanted yours truly to pick a source tune. Don't worry, I've got it covered. We are still with established Nintendo franchises, albeit I've got a killer. Maybe aside from Super Mario World, we are looking into one of the greatest SNES platformers ever made. And you can't even resist it when there's monkeys involved now, can't you? If there's anyone that's been here from back at PRC53, you can understand that Donkey Kong was a big deal to me when I was a kid. I went through the entire Land trilogy on the GameBoy and later started emulating the Country set, and saw a beautifully crafted set of platformers from Rare that seemed to end up ranking as one of the most creative sets of platformers I saw from Nintendo at the time. Heck, it even kicked back in again when I re-downloaded the second title through the Wii Virtual Console around the New Year and when re-looking at it again I was in love once more. Dave Wise's music has generally been inspirational to quite a lot of remixing personnel out here. With a project based on the first game out and plenty of contributions for the second (with most done by Protricity >.>) we can see that his score is not only fun to listen to but pretty awesome to interpret at the same time. There are few DKC2 tracks gone untouched, but I felt the one I picked for this contest is one of the more melodic of those untouched works, and has enough going on to have been warranted a remix sooner rather than later. I hope you all appreciate this well enough; no monkeying around this week! Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest - Donkey Kong Rescued (End Credits) MIDI | MP3 | SPC Is it me or has Nintendo gaming generally been the ways of success for the PRC over the past 2 months? PRC114: Worshipping rocks? What in Magvel...! (Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones)
Rexy replied to Rexy's topic in Competitions
Right, the voting stage is over. It's time we tabulated the overall winning party and see who will pick the source tune next time. Total number of mixes - 3 Total number of votes - 9 Highest possible score - 27 Chickenwarlord achieved yet another last place wooden spoon with 13 points. Retsej majestically debuted into second place with 19 points. And the winner of PRC114 is Rexy with 25 points! Right, so you want me to pick the source tune for PRC115. >.> I'll go ahead and do that, and I am really sure we'll get something started on time tonight. Still, what can I say? For a round that started late we got a pretty good turnout and I'm happy with what came through. Let's keep up the progress for PRC115. What will it be? You will see. (Oh btw seto, that "middle eastern" instrument was "far east" (koto) and the fact that Stewart Copeland often uses it as something to compliment the baselines in some of his compositions shows one sign of my inspirations for this week ) -

Ah, I was wondering who he was. I thought he was DZComposer uploading his entry under a different username, but it turns out they had different IPs. It goes to show that it helps to spread the word
