  1. (originally posted Nov. 29, 2001 02:04 AM) ======================== What the funk! (Super Mario All-Stars) ======================== by LousySpy. You may remember him from such remixes as Final Fantasy VII's "Forested Temple" and Tecmo Bowl's "You Better Pick the Bears." For a VERY long time, I wanted to hear new versions of the Starman theme. When Super Mario World came out, my jaw dropped when I heard the Starman theme, but when Yoshi's Island dropped it was the best version ever (still is). LousySpy gets 10 slices on this one (F.Y.I., 10 slices is a perfect score). He keeps the song from getting monotonous (if that's even possible) by inserting two snippets from SMB and one from SMW (@ 0:59, 1:43, and 2:05 respectively). The Mario soundbytes from SM64 creates a "skit," but doesn't feel forced or take away from the song at any point in the song. My favorite part has to be the return to the Starman theme after Mario is awoken by a fireball (that's an official explaination from LousySpy himself...I just wish I remember where I read that). 10 slices for LousySpy. Unnotlistentoable. Folks, these opinions are just that. I ain't a remixer. I'm a listener. But if you've been a regular visitor to the message boards since July 10th of 2001, you already know that. Please, listen to this more than once before you make your own opinions. Listen to it through decent speakers. And keep comin' back. Kudos to LousySpy. Well done sir. Well done.
  2. (originally posted Nov. 29, 2001 02:04 AM) ================================ Lightning Star (Sonic the Hedgehog) ================================ by JAXX. You may remember him from such remixes as Chrono Trigger's "No Time," and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo's "The Bitch is Back." JAXX...damn man. unfuckinbelievable. I could NOT get this song out of my head all day today. In the song, from 0-0:26, my favorite part is definitely the drums. Then I go crazy for the lead guitar from 0:38-1:05 (particularly the squeals at 0:52 & 0:55). At 1:18 the song slides into a mandatory finger snap thingy-dealy. The transition is...I can't think of anything else that doesn't sound remotely corny. 10 slices JAXX. Unprecedented. Unbelievable. Unnotlistentoable. Folks, these opinions are just that. I ain't a remixer. I'm a listener. But if you've been a regular visitor to the message boards since July 10th of 2001, you already know that. Please, listen to this more than once before you make your own opinions. I didn't appreciate "Lightning Star" until I listened to it at least 3 or 4 times. Listen to it through decent speakers. And keep comin' back. Kudos to JAXX. Well done sir. Well done.
  3. Nice work orky. Someone must have gotten wind of my fondness for piano arrangements, as we seem to be getting more and more. For the record, when I heard the first few notes I thought it was going to break out into a Killer Instinct remix. Yes, post it.
  4. This is beautiful. Why are we even looking at this to be reviewed? It should've been posted right away.
  5. Does "mainstream" include Peter Gunn Theme from "Spy Hunter" or Wipeout from "Cool Spot?" Well orky and Malcos don't seem to have a problem with it, so I'm gonna go ahead and vote yes and take the public complaints later. BTW rob1, it was American Bad Ass by Kid Rock for the Undertaker's theme. And Malcos, if I ever see a Sonic the Hedgehog movie (please no) that features McVaffe's IceCapped and Bonus Retreat, your Mystic Cave and Hot Stuff, Jivemaster's Tight Finale and rAAw Battery, JAXX's LightningStar, and the new Dub Island (Bashment Riddim Edit) collaboration, there's a 35% chance that I might spontaneously combust.
  6. I've listened to both of them back to back and I think he's right. There isn't much of a difference. The switch from 96 to 128 didn't do anything I could notice either. The panning is very subtle and the volume increase is small. With that being said, I still think that the song should be posted, but go with the second version as it is based on the author's wishes to go along with our ideas. I'm voting yes.
  7. I was all set, ready to reply and ask rob1 what the hell he was talking about. I was about to chew him out and say "What do you mean 'new samples'?" That's when the flute started. Sorry rob1... Gman, this is much better than the Roger Rabbit mix. But like orky said, never forget it. It keeps you humble. Plus it was good practice. I like this arrangement. I've never played FFV, so hearing the theme brand new in techno fashion also has a great deal to do with it. However...that flute sample? Gotta go. The strings sound fine to me. But the flute I grit my teeth everytime it comes in. That's not me being a cynical asshole. That's an accurate automatic response. I'm really gritting my teeth. Try to find a smoother flute sample. Not only is the current one too choppy, but it's flat sounding (although I don't know if there's much you can really do to help that, short of sampling a real flute yourself) You might also want to add a steady bassline from 0:48 - 1:28 and again from 2:09 - 2:36 to give your mix a little more depth. For now, I'm gonna have to say no.
  8. SON OF A FUCKING BITCH, IT HAPPENED AGAIN! EVERYTHING I WROTE IS GONE!!!!!!!!!! *ahem* Anyways, I'll get right to the point. Despite the fact that the voice samples are neither James Earl Jones or Ian McDiarmid (damn!) I liked them and didn't find them out of place. The Vader breath samples... *clutches his bosom* oh! Beeyooteefull! The main point I want to bring up is how I had a problem with considering this mix due to it's base. It's the Imperial March which is from The Empire Strikes Back and is probably straight sampled in the TIE Fighter game in question. The fact that it's in the game provides an execellent loophole for getting a techno version of the Imperial March posted on a video game remix site. Yet and still, doesn't Scott Peeples have two versions of 007's them posted on OCR? The only two 007 mixes, I might add (unless you count the little bit of the theme that LousySpy borrows in his "Final Fantasy VII - Forested Temple" mix). This is where we have to be careful. Theoretically, I could post a country version of The Clash of Lightsabers off of "The Empire Strikes Back" soundtrack because it was contained in "Masters of the Teras Kasi" for the Playstation, right? A vote for a song like this sets precedence as far as movie, tv, and wrestling soundtracks contained in games. Inanycase, it's safe to say that with a couple more of those bass explosions that are cliché in techno songs, the good folks of Peterborough, England would love it. As for this folk in Kalamazoo, Michigan, he loves it too. He just not sure if it should be posted... True, Scott's are on, but that was waaaaaaaaaaaaaay before the panel came into play so he's grandfathered on that issue. I can't vote yet. I wanna see what everyone else thinks. Even if you've already voted, let me know what you think on this issue. If we allow one, we've gotta allow them all. The quesion is, does anyone have a problem with that? *grumbles to himself* stupid ethics...
  9. There is a great disturbance in the Force... No. Here's why: It's way too repetitive. Almost 2½ minutes of hearing the same 15 notes over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again grows weary. That's my main complaint. Add an improv section or subtract the arpeggios for a few bars. I thought the switch over to NES was a cute gimmick. No qualms there. And yes, the song is off key. Having the original and then the covered version side-by-side helps to identify that quickly. My advice? Grab nsf2midi and get those notes right. Your choice of instruments is fine, but please do something with those arpeggio only sections. There's nothing wrong with arpeggio, but even "The Prelude" breaks into something else eventually.
  10. I'm not familiar with the original tune, but I can tell that it's been pretty well covered here. Like the rest of the guys, I think you should beef up the bitrate a bit. Take advantage, as you're the only one so far we've asked to INCREASE the bitrate Now that I listen to it a second time (this time with my trusty earphones), it sounds kind of flat. I don't think that's a matter of EQ, though. I think it's because it's recorded in mono. I'm gonna PM ryan8bit and ask him if he'd re-encode to 128 stereo. This one's pretty much a guaranteed posting. I haven't voted yet because I want to see what he says. If the song does receive a yes Pretzel, could you hold off on posting it until I get a response? Thanks duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude.
  11. Damn you orky. You know I like pianos! Yeah, it's kinda loud, but if it's too loud, you're too old. My only thing is the delay time on the piano, but that's not enough to hold it back. Post it.
  12. That's a good idea, Joe. But in the meantime, I'm gonna vote yes so I don't have to worry about "Holy crap, did I vote yet?" Personally, I don't care for the song, but I can't deny it's quality. It's OC quality. Yes, post it....maybe
  13. Well...nah. Gonna have to say no. It's a cute mix, but even though I've never played Bomberman it sounds like is doesn't stray far enough from the original. I think this is a good practice song as far as getting to know the software of his choice (FruityLoops). As Rob mentioned, the majority of the settings are set to default. I might keep it on the HD as one of those rainy day mixes to listen to, but as for posting I'm gonna say no.
  14. Artist notified. Email sent. Topic locked and moved.
  15. You know, it's not really all that bad. It's...it's aight . But something's missing. What's missing? Those strings that were there for the first 53 seconds of the song, but then disappeared. Like rob1 said, the mix does lean on the side of simplicity, which is NOT a bad thing. In this case, it's not a good thing either. That bell synth or whatever it is sounds like an empty Coke bottle being banged with a spoon. Now that's not totally bad except that the sound is too sudden and choppy. If that type of sound is the basis for your entire melodic frame, then you need something to compensate for it, i.e. the strings. I say bring those strings back in somewhere or just run them throughout. This mix does have some potential in my opinion. My ears are hungry, they need constant feeding. Some harmony or something. Till then, no.
  16. On a personal level, I'm not too crazy about this mix. Maybe it's just a first impression but I don't really like it. Why? I don't know why. I can't say....wait, that's unacceptable. Okaaaaayyy. Let's think about this. The theme itself isn't something I'm all that excited about. The sound quality of the cover is another issue as well. That's kinda hard to explain since it is at 320kbps. However, my own personal qualms aside, the track was done quite well. It does acheive OC standards in my opinion. So I would vote yes... but I'm not gonna. Like Joe and Rob said, let's see if we can get ahold of this guy first and ask to improve the recording quality and lower the bitrate (oxymoronic, huh?). I'm gonna say no. But trust me, when he's sees that this is the only thing holding his mix back from submission, he'll change it in a heartbeat.
  17. Dammit, dammit, sonofabitch. How in the hell can I email this guy and say, "Hey Star Salzman! We loved your FFVII mix. EVERY SINGLE JUDGE wanted to post it! Unfortunately, despite the utter sexiness of this 12 minute long opus, we can't post it cuz we gotta conserve bandwith for mixes a lot crappier than this. You know, shit like _______________________. (<<<insert least favorite mix here) Inanycase, you have unbelievable talent, which is why we'd rather you submit this truly excellent, orgasmic mix to a generic commie vg arrangement site, instead of here on OverClocked where it belongs. Piece Owt, Lou Zer! We got more techno versions of The Prelude to approve! -Antonio Friggin' Pizza & the rest of the Flipmode Squad" I kid. I'll do it right. I'd love for this to be posted, but unfortunately it is a submissions violation. Chopped up? I don't know. *holds his complete version at 128kbps oh-so-tightly* It pains me to do so, but I gotta vote no. If you'll exuse me, I need to go lose myself in a bowl of cereal
  18. rob1 you hooligan. I went to upload it to your ftp and the damn thing is down! YOU COMPLETE AND UTTER HOOLIGAN!!!!! I don't think you guys are missing much though, because what I got cuts off. I'm gonna email the guy and ask him to do what you guys suggested. Edit:
  19. Damn, the topic was locked as I was thinking of what to write! Inanycase. "Yes". There, I feel better now.
  20. Joe, now it is my turn to hope that you do not take offense. But I laughed at what you wrote. Not out of ignorance, but because I thought it was funny, please forgive me. No, it didn't sound racist. Alot of white guys who like bass, know, realize, and embrace their caucasianess. On the other hand, you do have a few who... well, do I have to explain? I hope to be one of those car audio punks, 'cept with a '93 S-10 and a decent pair of 6x9's that sound like 12's. That's the extent of my car audio knowledge. Maybe once I get my sounds, I'll go through quite neighborhoods arond 3:30am. Then I'll get arrested and jailed naked, I can sue the city* and not work for a few years. Yo. *That really happened in Kalamazoo. The police arrested a black man and jailed him naked for no reason (well we all know the reason. I'll rephrase: "no GOOD reason") He sued the city, but I'm not sure if he won or not.... Oh well, guess I'll stick to blastin' my factory speakers till they bust
  21. Seeing as rob1 seconded that, I'm gonna have to third it. The last 55 seconds of "It's Knighttime" practically turns into a whole new song and it is pretty sweet (except for that string sample ) I'm gonna be the third one to say it. I dunno. It does sound empty. Maybe some delay effects on the instruments or a little ambience/reverb to fill the void mighta helped. I do like that guitar that keeps popping in and out occasionally. Yeah, those horn samples are terribly bland. I'm not too crazy about the synth that first shows up around 1:17 either, although I do like that music box thingy. It's almost like every snyth in this mix, from the drums to the horns, to the hihat, is very very flat sounding. Like that half 20oz. of Sprite you left sitting in your car last Monday. You know it has the potential to satisfy your thirst, but it's just too damn flat and bland and Joe brings up an excellent point concerning whether or not DJ Jake intend it to sound like that for the first 3 minutes. It's quite clear from the last 55 seconds, that the gentleman knows how to fill up the silence. Hmmmmm.... I'm gonna half to go with a "no" on this one. I can't say "yes" in good conscience.
