Live Performers offer and request thread
Geoffrey Taucer replied to GrayLightning's topic in Music Composition & Production
About to add one of these babies to my arsenal. I'll update my earlier post and eventually record some samples when it arrives (which should be next week). -
Help: need tips in recording voice!
Geoffrey Taucer replied to SwordBreaker's topic in Music Composition & Production
Compression makes the quiet sounds louder. Actually, it makes the loud parts quieter, but generally you add gain after compressing, so the end effect is that quieter parts louder. The end result is that the entire mix sounds louder, without the peaks actually being any higher. Threshold is where the compressor actually starts to take effect. For example, if you have the threshold set at -10 dB, anything below that will be unchanged and anything above that will become quieter. The ratio effects how much quieter those peaks become. As for limit, I'm not entirely sure what that's referring to. Andy can probably explain all of this better than I can. -

That means you have motherboard integrated audio. Probably designed for moderately good playback, with recording capabilities thrown in just so they could say it had recording capabilities. An audio interface would be a very good thing to get. I'm not an expert on these, though, so I think I'll let somebody else give reccomendations on these. -

Um... guys, there's more to it than Mic --> computer. What soundcard to you have? How are you plugging an XLR mic into your computer, which, I'm guessing, doesn't have XLR input? If your soundcard is just the basic motherboard integrated audio that most PCs ship with, that will impose a substantial and inescapable limit on sound quality. Remember, your recording quality can only be as good as the weakest link in your recording chain. The best mics and audio programs in the world won't help if your soundcard sucks. Also, if you are plugging your mic directly into your soundcard, you have far less control over the input level than you would with a preamp or mixer (either one of which would be a very worthwhile investment if you plan to continue making live recording a big part of your mixing). -
Ok, so I just got back from a small smashfest, my first time seriously playing anybody who was any good aside from my brother (except for the two or three matches I played at Otakon). I got my ass handed to me.

GrayLightning steps down from the judges panel
Geoffrey Taucer replied to Liontamer's topic in Announcements
Long live GrayLightning! He appeared from nowhere, and brought forth sweet mixage and brought peace to the community. Then, he dissappeared, never to be seen again, but for years to come, when remixers sit around campfires, they shall tell of the legend of GrayLightning.... >_> Shut up, I'm underslept. -

Really? I hope it's just that he left OCR, and not that something bad happenned to him or anything... -
I'm heading to a tournament in Tarboro (my first tourney as well) sept 23. I don't know of any famous players here in NC, but I expect there will be at least one person there who can hand my ass to me on a platter. I hope so, anyway. At any rate, it'll be nice to finally play somebody good besides my brother.

Playing against computer players is of very limited use; all it teaches you is how to exploit the AI. Take the battle patterns you learn against a computer and try them against a human and you'll get your ass handed to you.

Gray was awesome. Well, I assume he still is, but it's a shame he'll have to take his awesomeness somewhere else. He was levelheaded even under fire, and a huge asset to this community. He will be missed. AND WE STILL DON'T FUCKING KNOW WHAT HE LOOKS LIKE! GAH! -
I don't use dash dancing much. I've always found it to be pretty pointless.

Forizzle: if you want to see a lot of this advanced shit in action, I reccomend you check out some DBR videos. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=410178209619848304&q=dbr&hl=en <-- that's their longest one, but they have a bunch of individual charcter videos as well. Just do a google video search for DBR. EDIT: Wave-dashing is when you jump and immediately airdodge diagonally into the ground. Your momentum from the dodge is transferred into a foward or backward slide along the ground where you can do any move, like a down-smash or a foward-smash. So it's a roll dodge. No, it's not. It's faster, more controllable, and more versatile, because you can do any attack out of it, before you even finish moving.

what the fuck? Is this a spambot or just some n00b with really bad english? I'm guessing the former, but I'm really not sure, since I can't make heads or tails of this post.

I'm working on shinedashing. I can occasionally pull off an effective two- or three-hit shinedash, but I'm not consistent enough to chase somebody all the way accross the screen with it a la zelgadis. I'm working on it, though. What's L-cancelling? EDIT: I thought you didn't even want to bother with that sort of play. Edit: Try using R. Hey, I said I was messing around just to see if I could. And I did try R. Doesn't help. I've gotten to about a 33% efficiency rate with the L button though. There's no way I'd ever try playing someone with this technique. I find it much easier with R. I normally shield and dodge with L, but I wavedash with R.

OCR01500 - Tales of Phantasia "The Koan of Drums"
Geoffrey Taucer replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Haha, I remember when Kyle came to me asking me to do a mix of this song for the project. I must say, after hearing this, I'm glad Dave got it; this mix is absolutely amazing. -

Fuck you, Dave. You have to release what sounds like it's probably an awesome mix when I can't listen to it. Hopefully I'll have my setup back together tomorrow and be able to listen. -

Of course he's going to say that about all of them, he's the diplomat of this shindig. Doesn't mean it isn't true (though actually I haven't heard Danny's mix yet) -
