Some forums were indeed unaffected by this, like ReMixing, Requests and WIPs, but it is undeniable that gendisc and offtop are pretty sucky now. Every now and then someone posts week-old news about a game console, and PassivePretentousness says that he is omg oh so drunk is this awesome y/n ? Seeing as this is not a news site, or even a site for intelligent, informed discussion about TVs or anything than can be objectively measures/quantified, you have to have subjective discussions. And subjective discussions are only interesting when there is flaming/lulz. Anyways I certainly lurked more than I posted there, but my opinion is that the forums are nowhere near as interesting as they once where.

You need to hardpan your guitar tracks : at least 1 100% right and one 100% left. For the bass, you'd be better off using a general midi bass than a pitched shifted guitar, in my opinion. Also, keep the bass line simple : given the complexity of your rhythm guitars, just playing eighth notes on the root of the chord and hell, just playing one note per chord would be enough. The power chords and the arpeggios together are also a big source of muddiness, you'll want to make one of those tracks a lot quiter or eliminate it altogether. As far as I can hear, the mix lacks bass (which would be corrected should you use a midi bass or whatever) and treble. Everything happens in the mids/low mids, that's why you think it sounds lo-fi. For the treble part, I would recommend removing the delay from the rhythm sound and making it a lot less distorted. To get that big full metal sound, usually you need a lot less distortion than you'd think, because the fullness will come with the bass and multiple tracks.

FEEDBACK NEEDED: Submission Standards Revision
PriZm replied to djpretzel's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
I feel that the "using common presets" part can sound a little intimidating, especially with software that has highly sophisticated presets like Reason, Garritan, Kontakt, etc. It could encourage artists to avoid using sawtooth, square or any other common sound that is used in many remixes (and commercial songs) effectively. The rest is fine, and a big upgrade. I could translate it to French if you want me to. -
Try the album Pop Life by David Guetta. especially love_is_gone_(fred_rister_and_joachim_garraud_radio_edit_rmx)
-
Seconded. Any Xenosaga mix is a good mix.
-
Try both. In my experience, placing it at the center between the two cones gives a richer and crispier sound while placing it directly in the center of one cone gives a beefier but muddier tone.
-
I'd place the mic as close as possible to the center of the amp speaker. If it is a 4x10, I'd place it in the middle of the two lower speakers. I've always obtained decent sound this way. Keep in mind though, the guitar will not sound the same with your recording and amp, mainly because it is not played back by the same speakers. Also, a tone that could sound absolutely wonderful to you solo could sound awful in a mix, and vice-versa. I once had a friend play a Squier through a Danelectro distortion pedal and a Crate amp and the tone was horrifying, but in the mix it was just smooth and perfect. Oh and the SM57 should be perfect.

Heavenly sword demo was meh.

Thank you, that was what I was trying to say, only much more concise and eloquent.

I'm not saying we shouldn't discuss about future games. I'm saying it is impossible to gauge the consoles current quality by only speculating about future games.
-
Yes. That's why it's pointless. If we could discuss the games currently available and draw our conclusions from these, it would make sense. But now all the talks I see on the tubes is about: "My Wii kicks ass, I'll be able to play Smash Bros Brawl/Mario Galaxy/Metroid Prime when it comes out. My X360 kicks ass, I'll be able to play Mass Effect/Halo 3 when it comes out. My PS3 kicks ass, it can process 5000000GFlops/s and I'll be able to play Final Fantasy 13 when it comes out. The price difference isn't so big. Let's say a Wii is 250$ and a PS3 is 600$. That's 350$. At 70$ a game that's like 5 games. And if you buy games that last 4-5 hours like Wario Ware that's like 25 hours worth of gameplay. Whatever, this is not in defense of Sony or whoever, but that's just to make a point that the best console will not be determined by price or potential, but by the games avaiable. And since the library is so small for all consoles we don't know yet. The novelty of the Wii controller could end up being not much more than a gimmick. Or it could be awesome. Same goes for X360 and PS3. The fact of the matter is we don't know yet. I see the different threads about the consoles as a discussion about what's new and what's good/bad regarding the console, not about why it could eventually potentially possibly in the future if everything goes well if we kneel down and pray/suck their corporate cocks be better than X other console.
-
Srsly. This 'console war' fanboyism never fucking ends. People only talk about price and potential and future exclusives blah blah fucking blah because all three consoles currently suck goat balls.

There's a party in my vagina and you are all invited. Happy birthdaay.

Oh yeah, I went to see him at his show here in Montreal and it was all you described. Ear bleedingly loud and the strobes were so intense that we had to stare at the floor for a couple of minutes during some of his songs. It was the closest thing to drugs that I ever experienced, except, obviously, drugs.

Can't stop listening to this song. "ur goin 2 dai"
-
I loved the finale.
-
The album is awesome. And so was deadwing. Now there's a band that really improves with time.
-
I hope it all goes well Prophet. Sorry for canning our mix.
-
Indeed. The new Symphony X album is a digital rendition of awesome.

Well Six Degrees had some very great moments. the Glass Prison was very nice for its first half, after that it went to random heavy annoying shit. The Great Debate was great but debatable. Blind Faith was awesome Misunderstood was very nice except for the weird fx with the guitars that completely ruined the song. Disappear was mandatory. As for the six degrees things... well Good Night Kiss and Another Crash - reprise were pretty good. Train of Thought was great in my opinion, I loved Endless Sacrifice, In the Name of God, Stream of Consciousness and, to a certain extent, Honor Thy Father. But none of those songs are as good as Forsaken and Ministry of Lost Sould, imo.

the only thing funny about his thread title is your face

Ah but the PS3 doesn't play .avi videos, which is a bitch when downloading anime and having to convert to mp4 and shit. Or you could use Linux, but then the RSX (graphics card) is locked and videos are all jumpy.

I don't know. I'm a pretty big Dream Theater fan, but this album lacked polish for me. 01 : In the Presence of Enemies part I. Bunch of riffs thrown together. It's like Overture 1928, except the riffs aren't repeated throughout the album. Also, there are pretty emotion-filled parts, but they lack context and/or continuity so it doesn't really appeal to me. 02 : Forsaken. Extremely kickass. Beautiful first verse, beautiful chorus, KICKASS second verse and a solo that'll make you cry. 03 : Constant Motion. Dream Theater's impersonation of Metallica. It's pretty grating, since it lacks the raw power of Metallica and the lyrics are extremely lame. Stellar drumming at 4:04 almost made up for the rest of the song though. 04 : The Dark Eternal Night. Hmmm sounds like a song title John Petrucci would come up with when he's 6. Oh wait... This song tries hard to be heavy, but ultimately fails. The main riff is too convoluted for proper headbanging and the megaphone vocals are kinda grating. Very creative instrumental part, with jazz and Rudess trademark circus piano, until 5:50 approx where are hell breaks loose and the rest is an uninspired technical massacre. 05 : Repentance. May touch you if you're a recovering alcoholic. Otherwise, no. I heard some people say it was Porcupine Tree influenced. Well maybe, but I feel that Porcupine Tree master this ambient genre much better. 06 : Prophets of War : I don't have much to say here. Pretty good, catchy song, except the rap at 3:50. 07 : The Ministry of Lost Souls : Very catchy and dramatic melody right at the beginning. The progression starting at 1:03 is hauntingly beautiful and the chorus is tear-jerking. There is a pretty long instrumental part starting at 7:28 until 10:09 which felt unecessary and diverted from the main focus of the song. But the ending and the chorus is pretty damn fucking nice. Best song on the album IMHO. 08 : In The Presence of Enemies Part 2 : Pretty much like part I. Bunch of riffs thrown together, some of which are very good. It lacks the direction and focus of A Change of Seasons, or the plain out-of-this-worldness of Dance of Eternity. All in all a pretty good album. I just feel that this is not their best effort to date. There was a time where each and every song on their album had something to offer, with Images and Words, Awake and Scenes from a Memory. Some other albums had truly great moments, like In the Name of God from Train of Thought or Octavarium and Sacrificed Sons from Octavarium. I don't know... On this one, while Ministry of Lost Souls and Forsaken are pretty good songs, I'm not completely wowed by any of them.

That was actually a joke in Mafalda
