  1. oh my post wasn't a generalization. I wasn't saying that all gamers are like this but only underlining the points that make us have a negative image in general. If you are not personally guilty of any of these, then more power to you, but I was asking was what do you think could change this. Also I understand that we cannot get rid of the trolls, same thing as we can't get rid of bullying, but is it possible to make their presence not a defining factor of gaming experience and culture ?
  2. It has come to my attention recently that there are almost no decent outlet for people who like video games on the internet. I will call those people 'we' because although I certainly don't want to identify with 'gamer' culture, I refuse to be ashamed to play video games. The image we are projecting through the official media is simply awful. Game 'journalism' is atrocious. Gaming must not be very attractive to outsiders if they wanna get informed. Console wars, trolls, kotaku, adoration/racism towards Japan, competitive vs scrubs, casual vs hardcore, nerd rage, internet tough guys, etc. These are all by far the most popular terms we get associated with and frankly I find it disgusting. I have a friend who is a major movies buff, and although he was certainly against blockbusters when he was young and used to call everyone who liked stuff like Rocky or Total Recall ignorant tasteless idiots but, as he matured, he began to understand that not every movie aims to be a philosophical contemplation and an innovative artistic masterpiece. He began to understand the intention behind a movie and could appreciate the blockbusters like everyone. My point is, is game culture simply young and not mature enough, and will it ever grow up ? Is it because the medium itself is young or because games mostly cater to younger people ? Also, since the more reasonable people are more likely to be less vocal since by definition they probably don't care about these issues, is there any way for us to change the image that we are projecting ? Is there a way to project an image where we don't care about XBOX360 vs PS3; where we don't find it particularly fun to piss other people off; where we don't care that a girl cosplaying as whoever made a panties shot; where we can appreciate and be intrigued by Japan and its culture without becoming obsessive and without being called weeaboos; where we find it frustrating to lose to someone who always does the same move in a fighting game and yet don't care enough to become competitive tournament players; where we don't care whether a game is labelled hardcore or casual and can find enjoyment in both games like Bejeweled and Farmville as well as more involving ones like Call of Duty and Dark Souls ?
  3. awesome that's almost exactly what I was looking for thanks
  4. yeah that kinda reminds me of an article I read (don't remember where) about anime piracy where it said that one of the main appeals of piracy is that you get a superior product than what you could pay for. Pirated anime can be downloaded, streamed, archived etc. and they usually come out very fast. Pirated manga comes out faster as well. Pirated software does not have all this DRM bullshit and can be played without the CD. I had never thought about this but it all seems reasonable to me. It would be interesting to see what the effects would be if a legal ($) service that offers the same or better quality would try to compete.
  5. Hey OCR Recommend some good songs/bands with funky in-your-face drumming like in Joe Satriani - If or Dave Matthews Band - So Much to Say I'm not much interested in historical relevance, I just want some impressive drum tracks with hi-hat craziness.
  6. Thank you The Damned for this post. It irritates me to no end how everyone is so quick to dismiss/hate a character or a show just because of a little complaining or emotional difficulties. It's like forbidden to show any emotion except anger if you are a male character in anime or games otherwise an angry mob will just call you emo. It happened with Hope in Final XIII, Sasuke in Naruto and others.
  7. From a remixing standpoint, since we are on OCR and therefore try to not stay too close to the original, I believe songs that have a strong melody or recognizable motif would be ideal. In that light I would scratch COD, Elder Scrolls, etc. A good example of a fantastic modern soundtrack to remix would be Okami. Also, Xenosaga.
  8. If you're into Symphony X and prog in general, you owe it to yourself to check out Andromeda.
  9. If you made something more discrete, like something with a small logo on top left and nothing in the back, I think I'd buy it. If you made a polo shirt, then I would definitely buy it. Those two designs are not very appealing to me.
  10. I will try to speak only in terms of story and not gameplay: Xenogears - powerful story indeed, but not too emotional. It's more philosophical and interesting (with giant robots) Xenosaga - awesome setup in the first game, really hooks you and makes you want to know more. Nice but ultimately disappointing second part but awesome conclusion in the third part. Incredible music really emphasizes the mood conveyed in the story. Silent Hill (all of them except Homecoming) - I'm not a huge Silent Hill nerd like some people here but even if you don't pay attention to every tiny detail, the stories are dark and emotional without becoming too melodramatic. The story by itself isn't really amazing but the way it fits with the music and atmosphere makes it really engaging. Final Fantasy X - You can really get attached to the characters and the twist towards the end is really emotional. Final Fantasy Tactics - Not really that emotional, but politically engaging and great hooks. Heavy Rain - The game itself is pretty much only a story. Very well told and dark. Not much humor but the character development is really good. L.A. Noire - Amazing ending; the fact that so many people got pissed at it (not disappointed, but genuinely pissed) is a great sign. The way everything comes together is very well told.
  11. This comment here is a shining example of fighting games tourney people aggressiveness. I get why people who are skilled and invest a lot of time in a game find it annoying to be called 'cheap' by others. What I don't get is why people who are less skilled or want to play the game on a more casual level are considered sub-humans and aren't allowed to enjoy the game. I also get why those less skilled people might want to create arbitrary rules to make the games more enjoyable and why they would find being called 'scrubs' annoying.
  12. January motherfuckin 31st ! This is coming out sooner than expected.
  13. I think it is a good idea. In my experience it's best to try not to plan too much in advance but aggressively refactor your existing stuff.
  14. I don't know what kind of commitment you are looking for, but I could put in a few hours a week into this.
  15. zircon you son of a bitch ! This is gonna be awesome, I can't wait to hear what you guys have done. From what I understand on the poster, Jillian is doing all the vocals on this OST ? Wow
  16. News from EVO: Xianghua is gone and will be replaced by her 15 year old daughter. Also two gameplay videos from the stream showcasing ivy, natsu, zwei, patroclus, mitsurugi and siegfried:
  17. Interesting video from comic on detailing a bit of the gameplay and presenting some new faces:
  18. Yeah this is all super exciting. Character design looks awesome so far, and the new stages (arena + moonlit valley) also. I must admit that I can't help but to be a little pissed off when I read the comments though.
  19. Yeah Bump'n Jump would be awesome. Also regarding remakes: Persona 3/4 HD Xenosaga trilogy HD
  20. If you look at what people usually get up in arms about, the general sentiment seems to be that you should not have any right at all if you become rich/successful.
  21. They are not allowed to, but then again if I received something at work I would probably open it right away. Anyways it was just an example, but there are ways in which you can seriously harm someone while doing some 'harmless' pranks.
  22. Well no, they can ruin your life by sending you dildos at your work place and get you fired or shit like that... which I would guess they find extremely funny. Anyways if I ever do another remix, I'm a call it 'Wall of Cool'
  23. I just realized that saying anything negative about nintendo would not fly here. Carry on
