  1. I thought this was a pretty nice arrangement. I would compare this to some earlier classic rock acoustic. People are saying that being a little off-tune, a little sloppy is so horrible? That's just not so. It's mostly a matter of taste to me. Music is emotive, it's not all about precision. I mean, look at people like Neil Young. Half of his songs sound "sloppy" as hell, yet he's heralded as one of the best guitarists/songwriters of the last century. Listen to his voice even. Or take a gander at the Grateful Dead or even Led Zeppelin somewhat, or the Band, etc. etc. etc... Point being, it's not always about being perfect in their music... Obviously there was skill involved in making this song, it didn't sound amateur to me, it wasn't perfect, but I don't think the way it was approached required it to be. Does the song have soul? My biggest qualm about this song isn't at all anything being sloppy (well a couple of the celestia? notes did bother me), more that I think dynamic-wise, the guitar overpowers the other instruments a little too much (it's pretty much the same volume the entire time and I don't think it needed to be, some other elements feel a bit drowned out by it)... I also may have liked the guitar to have a slightly less poignant attack at times... But for the most part it was fine. This is just my two cents, of course, I am at least happy it passed for what it is worth. Nice job zyko.
  2. I usually lurk in the Silent Hill Forum mostly to hear about what's new or what cool project someone is cooking up next. I used to look up Silent Hill Resort for info on the film before it's release, and also to check out the podcast, but recently they've become a little too side-tracked by other non-SH related news to stay relevent. Recently, I've been trying to build up a relationship with Silent Hill: Origins to make the information here a little more accessible to the public, but there are a number of kinks that I've still got to work out. Silent Hill Heaven's Forums had quite a long dry spell, especially with the main site closing and all, but recently with the revived interest in the series and it's subsequent publications, I'm finding myself reading more and more from that site. I recently joined the sh forum... They are pretty receptive to just figuring out what makes the games really tick... I think their atmosphere is warm and friendly. The silent hill heaven forum is pretty much full of a lot of snobbery, but they know their stuff... A lot of the people there seem to take themselves way too seriously... especially the mods, which is not good. I take that place with a grain of salt. I am pretty much taboo there myself. The site's content was great, and hopefully the newer edition will be good as well when it is released. I've never visited the other places, I will have to take a look. If you ever post at the places I visit, drop me a pm and I will take a look. :J
  3. yo yo yo yo whoop yo uh uh uh yo it's just madness, it don't make sense, and it ain't supposed to it's just rebellion!
  4. a: I loved this song in the game b: yeah I think you should keep going crazy for a while, really emphasize the piano and do some great "playing" around...then do a soft beautiful quiet part, and then bring back insane drums and crazy piano for a finale. Sound good?
  5. hey ifrit, do you ever frequent any SH forums? edit: or does anyone else here for that matter? also, I'm starting to realize that this thread is like a mini website...it has so much information...I just can't believe it.
  6. Believe me, I've made a lot of progress on this song, but I am uh...currently (acquiring) better samples to continue...I JUST got my new computer yesterday, it is very nice. If you want a version from around a month ago I will pm it to you, but be aware that it's going to be completely revamped with better quality in the near future.
  7. Bump...I know some of you GDers can do some artwork or help out. Please do :J
  8. Yeah, come on people, this game was awesome and had some great music. Also as for my WIP...I will have a lot more concrete material by Dec 12 I am 90% sure. Bump.
  9. Sorry Shinny, about not having time or energy to do anything with your song, I feel bad about that, that I couldn't help. I'm glad you understand where Starky came from with the cut. Anyway, bump.
  10. Bumpety bump I just ordered the MEGA computer. This bodes well for ultra completion of my song, as in being really f$%($ finished...It will relatively soon (when I get it and get set up, and give or take a few days - get internet give or take a couple weeks...haha) Anyway, on the road to victoly!
  11. Huh... Okay, I here goes an actual serious review from me: Gameplay: 8/10 - This would be a ten, if I didn't find myself wishing there were such a thing as "sprint shoes" later in the game. Sometimes walking the same area ten times at the same constant speed can irk you. And you revisit some areas 4-5 times throughout the game. And I hardly ever used a chocobo. The battle system is really f%#king great. I actually enjoyed some battles where I knew that if I had the right gambits on, I could just walk away for a minute, get something to drink, and come back. Other times I had to be so involved in a battle that if I took less than a split second to do shit, my party would be pretty much wiped (I hunted marks a little too high level) Also, this game on "active" as opposed to "wait" actually means something. Sound: 8/10 - Yeah there were some good sounds, but nothing really great. Music: 7.5/10 - Okay, sometimes I want to say the music is great, but really, the guy has a tendency to focus on the most annoying parts of his songs in order to bring out the better parts, (a good example of this would be the lowtown theme) which he just lets go and moves on to the next whatever the hell it is he is trying to accomplish with his music. He's no doubt talented, and after hearing a theme about 20 times or so, I do acknowledge that they get stuck in my head and sometimes are catchy after a while - or won't go away (whichever), and sometimes I really enjoy the music. I also do respect that he went for an entirely authentic orchestrated soundtrack, I didn't hear any instruments outside of the symphonic spectrum that I know of... I don't think the guy had to do that, but I guess I respect it. As for comparing the music to Nobuo Uematsu's...There just isn't a comparison...As different and somewhat refreshing the music of FFXII is, I'd still take the soundtracks to IV, VI, and VII any day of the week. It's really love/hate with me - I sometimes really want a more melodic feel, and the score itself could use a little more thematic progression from song to song...It was done a couple times, but I probably would have liked it better if could I sometimes associate a character or story progression with a certain "main" theme at least to bind it all together. Story: 7.5/10 - It's very subdued...But in a way, I appreciated some of it, the characters aren't always telling us exactly what they think about everything...But I think we know anyway, or get the feeling that they are just as "swept up" as we are. It does slow down in the middle, and I wondered what the hell Vaan was even doing there. Addictiveness: 10/10 - I couldn't stop playing for a week or so, and not just because I was hoping things would be better in the story, but because the gameplay is actually fun. Character Designs: 9/10 - Aside from Vaan's S&M vest, I really liked what they did...I even sort of liked Fran's ...bunny ears...(you thought I was going to say her ass hanging out) Voice Acting: 10/10 - Really awesome, I especially liked Larsa and Fran. Dialogue: 10/10 - Some of the dialogue in this game is actually way above par. I didn't expect the maturity of it. It wasn't cliche and it wasn't overdramatic, but it still meant something, when something had to be said. So overall I'd say around an 8/10 give or take.
  12. Hey guys, I just actually played and beat ToS, so I have a new appreciation for what you are doing. I was kind of disappointed with the endings, but anyway, good luck on the final stuff and getting this released.
  13. Okay, I'm going to feel my way through this critique, and not concentrate on anything really technical, as I think you have that covered pretty well. I want a really hard metal clink passage in this song! In other words, towards the end, or after a build, or wherever...I don't even know, but a hard metal clank, I want it. This doesn't help...does it...I need to sleep... Well...okay...Your song is wonderfully crazy, but as crazy as it is...for the average listener, I think that maybe it's hard to follow the song the entire way through with all the craziness without a break - in other words, you've had your fun, and so much of it, but people seem to want a section in a song with a real fun beat for some reason so they can djp to it... I... guess...who knows. Maybe that's why I want a strong metal clank. I mean, you do have a consistent beat throughout the song, which puzzles me, but it's really filtered out, so maybe that's why? I think you said this earlier, or someone did...And if you did, I agree...A part of the song that consists of some normalcy in terms of interpretation could probably bring out what you're trying to accomplish more. Maybe a pretty piano - orchestral passage-something or other in the middle; full blown percussion, snares, cymbals, trumpets whatever... or I don't even know, maybe really fucking dynamic over the top dramatic strings that display the uh...epic-ness of the original theme - could sinch it for me....I mean, you've already gone over the top with everything else....Then just switch back to the robos :J Another suggestion: The dynamics of this song are pretty much in the (loud) range all the way through...a couple measures of really soft...ness...as a counterpart probably wouldn't hurt, a few beeps and boops, and you could use it to sneak in some other familiar FFVI theme...Yeah uh, robots are pretty consistent and maybe they do like to be very loud all the time, but... That's my take on it anyway...It's awesome regardless, and I feel pretty silly right now for some reason. It's hard for me to critique songs like this, (is there a song like this?) I get pretty overwhelmed...But I hope this helped a little. Good luck. Edit: Haha nice Kefka theme there.
  14. Haha, maybe you should take it to the next level...Like that of Tears for Fears ... Like uh..."Shout"... Anyway this is great, I think you've accomplished what you were going for, genre-wise.
  15. Well I am happy to say that I actually worked on and hopefully improved my song...Except I still suck at drums...but progress!
  16. Honestly, I am pretty appreciative of Starky being so lax...I can understand the frustration of the people who have finished tracks in this project, and are waiting...But I have the same predicament in the Kirby Superstar Project. My song is 99% done...But I have been waiting for months on the artwork to finish so the project can be released. My song was finished back in March...As well as many other people's music...but I don't see any drama in that thread regarding the wait. So guys, if you REALLY want this project to fall apart, then keep up this angry, angsty ranting you're doing (Koelsch) and it will all crumble to pieces. It has been precariously on the edge for so long, and either we accept how Starky runs this project, or we walk. A lot of people have walked from being committed, I myself have had so much shit that I've barely worked on ANY music in over six months, because I don't have the means, my computer sucks, and I haven't had much computer or internet access whatsoever. At this point, I don't care if I get kicked off of the project for not having a song done, and I apologize that my song isn't done at this point...But at least it isn't the only one...And there are still a lot of unclaimed songs...Unclaimed because from the get go, this project has been an underdog and the "established" remixers in the community showed little or no support for something that could have been incredible within half the amount of time. The theme is great, the source material is awesome, so what the hell? I really appreciate the people that have stayed on and have been dedicated. I just wish you guys would be patient. It just goes to show you what has happened to this site, honestly. I can't really put my finger on what exactly HAS happened...but it does show you...somewhat...yeah. And Starky, I do wish that you'd uh...show that you care just a little more, I know you do, but I don't think it's coming across as much on the screen as it could, honestly, too much may be left up to interpretation for these guys.
  17. I so need to get in touch with Usa, I was listening to my song and it really is all done damnit, I just need the render. Also, I may be getting a new computer real soon (and maybe even a tablet too so I can do art without a mouse hee) so if you need any artwork touch ups or critiques or anything, and I am around, pm me or something and I will see what I can do...I sure hope this thing gets finished sometime before 2007 ;P
  18. never debate crap about Silent Hill with people on IMDB...also bump
  19. Ahhhhhhhhh! Also I am very happy with your WIP dafydd, just wanted to say that. I agree about the reverb though...And yeah, a little too much bass...But besides that, great job :J I YAM INSPIRED
  20. Well, this was ...it was quite nice. I always liked the boss theme from SOM, I never understood how such a fast-paced and chaotic theme could morph and transition from one feeling to another so well. But anyway, Shna has pretty much hit the core of this theme strongly. I always thought the song was a dueling or sorts... It starts with the evil monster threatening and the uh, hero answering back...and then the evil theme comes back with more strength etc, only to be answered again by the really awesome theme that was always my favorite in the original (2:00 in this mix). And then it's all wrapped up to start over again. So anyway, you hit the nail on the head on this one There was great expansion in this arrangement, but it kept (and enhanced) the spirit of the original. w Wee edit: p.s. controversy!
  21. Hi I am still alive, if that counts. I haven't really worked on my song since uh...Shinny tried to send me a guitar track over my song and I lost my mind (no offense Shinny - it just didn't look promising - your guitar and my crap just didn't seem to mix well...at all. Anyway, I've been really busy working and all lately, but things have finally settled down enough here for me to do something. So uh, give me a few days I guess. I'm going to rework a lot of things and finish the song, hopefully. also this is a bump
  22. Roe! I am echoing what many people have stated. I'm really glad a song made it, although I think you should have like ten up by now. I was especially disappointed about the Heart to Heart track, as you know what I thought about it. But anyway, glad to see this up, though you know me, I'm all piano and pretty things, so this wasn't my favorite, but I can see why it was posted. Congrats guy!
  23. Just want to say that I'd never put my faith into a movie critic, especially Ebert. The guy gave Rugrats in Paris twice as many stars. He's trite, full of himself, and he doesn't give a shit. Anyway, I think this movie was better than any other video game movie I've seen, but I think it could have been so much better, honestly. There was just so much potential...And I think Gans made some "bad" choices in what to focus on part of the time. And I think the original cult storyline was much more enthralling. Anyway, I guess my expectations were too high...Then again, at least Konami made some money off of this.
  24. I PUT THIS REVIEW IN WHITE OKAY? OKAY! I liked the intro, I liked the re-make of the alley scene, I liked PH's appearances (though they still don't really explain why he is there, even if it is feasable) I liked Cybil's character, and Rose wasn't bad as well. I hated Dahlia being the good "mother" and the cult turning into a makeshift version of Salem Quaker mining town. And wtf, Christabella? Why even have a good Dahlia? Just have Dahlia as Christabella and forget there being any sort of "mercy". Lisa was pretty cool, but uncessary. (except in terms of cameo) Also, I thought there was some funny stuff with Anna's lines. I liked the school somewhat, but yeah, Sean Bean's whole thing was just stupid, because they leave nothing to wondering. Also, I absolutely HATED THE FLASHBACK VOICE-OVER. Cheesy, even if it shed a lot of light on things. I loved some of the music, some of the orchestrated versions...And the sound was okay. Anyway, that's about it for now. This movie from me gets an even C, which makes me very sad, but what did I expect?
