  1. =) not quite what i want, in the end, but it'll work for the next two years. i'm hoping for something similar to what stevo's got, where his workstation's in the corner, and he's got a big-screen with all his gadgets hooked up to it with a sectional couch for reclining. but that's in the future =)
  2. let's see if this works. clockwise, starting from the amp. Fender bxr-150 100w amp (150$ on craigslist) Kay mandolin, circa 1975 (200$ on craigslist) Washburn 12-string (two crappy mics, a 6-channel mixer, and 50$ on craigslist) ESP LTD B-416 6-string bass (125$ on craigslist) Ibanez EW20ZWE acoustic (wife bought it for me as a wedding gift) Squier 4-string acoustic bass (75$ on craigslist) the recliner was 25$, from a roomie who was moving out in college. got the drum for christmas, has a nice clear tone to it even though it's small. also, the big open space between the bookshelves (where the flashlight and trumpet are now) now holds posters for ODST and Red Faction: Guerrilla. the bookshelves hold authors such as Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson, Jack McDevitt, and Tom Clancy. this is just to the side of that picture. i nabbed the TV from our landlords, who left it there. you can see my N64, Genesis (1601, got it and five games for 35$ on craigslist), and SNES (another craigslist nab, 30 games and two controllers for 50$). the speakers on the lower left are hooked up now. in the bin to the right of the cabinet is another N64, two GameCubes, a PlayStation One, and a lone NES gun (i don't own an NES, dunno where i got it from). the tall storage to the right of the concrete post is my computer building supplies. all the way on the right, behind my head, is my 1UP mushroom i got at MAGFest 7. the mothership itself. you can tell where this relative to the last two pictures by the shelf in the lower right. three monitors - 17" square for email, 28" primary, 22" secondary on a monitor arm (going clockwise from me). Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 audio interface under the 17". between that and the 28" is my headphones - a Sennheiser HD280 Pro (closed ear) and an Alessandro Labs Grado Music Series Two (open ear). i use a Logitech G15 keyboard and Revolution MX mouse. the speakers are NHT M-00 studio monitors (sub is forthcoming, hopefully in september), and there's an M-Audio Axiom 49 on the stand there. the computer under the desk itself is encased in a Zalman GS-1000 case, and consists of an i7-860 2.8ghz quad core clocked up to 3.5ghz (on air!), hand-lapped Cooler Master Hyper 212 heatsink, eVGA GTX 260 core 216 gfx card, G.SKILL 2x2gb DDR3 1600 ram, total of 3.8tb of internal HD space (there's a 1tb external between the saffire pro 40 and the shelf up to), eVGA P55 SLI motherboard, LG DVD-RW drive, and a Seasonic X750 750w power supply. oh, and i put a bunch of posters up to cover up the painted-on crap our landlords did - a big one of P.O.D., medium one of FF:Dissidia, and one of Mass Effect 2. don't have a picture of the AV area upstairs, but it's got a 47" 1080p HDTV, with a set of Logitech Z5500 5.1 speakers. I've got my PS3 (CECHE model), X360 Slim, X360 jasper (250gb HD, banned and flashed with iXtreme 1.61), and the usual CD changer, radio, VCR, and iPod cable all rigged into the sound system. welp, there's my office area/man cave. whatcha think?
  3. this is good. my move was way worse than i expected it to be, so i have little done on mine.
  4. ba-da-bump. still available, people.
  5. hah =) i've done it on three systems, which is why i know it works. a clean install on a system that's never had w7 works perfectly. in fact, any upgrade from xp requires you to do a clean install from boot, and any upgrade from vista to w7 where the versions are different (ie, home vs pro vs ultimate) requires a clean install from boot. as i said before, it's just like the upgrade discs for the latest version of OSX, if i remember correctly. that was the joke about it.
  6. wham, ban, thank you for sending in your wip, Lashmush person! another wip!
  7. does anyone have a sega genesis 1601 (first model, with the volume knob on the front) AV cord? i need something cheap. at some point.
  8. wham, bam, thank you for finishing your track, Ten19 man! another finished track!
  9. nope. same as with the latest OSX disc.
  10. just moved, getting my head on straight. give me a few days and there'll be some updates =)
  11. yeah, you don't need any OS on the system to do that.
  12. i don't understand what this post means.
  13. whoops, bad information on my part then. the P8600 is a surprisingly capable chip, all told.
  14. the trick is that they can get one copy through win741 and then another copy through their major university's tech department, usually for only about 8-10 dollars.
  15. send me a wip and we'll talk. also, as per the request in the first post, PLEASE don't release content in the thread - only do it through PM. please remove that link in post #561.
  16. the stylistic requirements are ambient, quiet rock, or classical - think 'rainy day' style of stuff. so, no, deathmetalish doesn't work. symphonic might. i thought someone had put in interest for the Last Battle track...i need to look into that.
  17. all you need is a functional .edu email address. you're sure to have a relative or friend that's in college =)
  18. actually, the upgrade discs will install a completely fresh install if you want to. back up your stuff, format your system drive when given the chance in the disc-only install (you've gotta boot into the disc), and then just install it. totally legal, just like what apple did with their newest OS's upgrade discs.
  19. of course, it helps when you spell it right, kid. Frigid has an i in it.
  20. you don't want water-cooling. you want a better air-cooling rig. it's totally possible to get a system air-cooled in those temperatures. water-cooling is a huge, huge hassle that won't actually be as effective as air-cooling in those conditions. it's only better in situations where you've got a really low ambient temperature and a really high core temperature, like 40 or 50C difference. the thing to remember is that all cooling is relative to the ambient temperature. also, work in celsius =) so, if you're living at a max of 30C for your ambient temperature, the absolute best cooling system in the world will get your CPU to 40C at idle and 45C at load, which is respectable. GPU temps are generally 15-20C higher, which works because they're OK up to almost 100C (if actively cooled) or above (if passively cooled). i'm assuming that your system is reaching into the 70s for CPU and 85C or so for GPU, right? if you're not sure, get the free program HWMonitor (same company that makes CPU-Z) and leave it open to check. a good CPU fan combined with a decent-sized case, proper airflow, and good fans will still be pretty quiet when under load. for example, my case has six high-end fans, a big CPU cooler with a big fan, and a double-slot graphics card (complete with large cooler) in it, and it's just above the ambient noise level when sitting halfway under my desk. the trick is using large fans, since the bigger the fan, the slower it has to spin to push the same or more air as smaller ones. so, avoid 80mm fans, and go with at least 120mm fans at all times. if you have the room, use 120mm fans that are 38mm thick instead of the normal 25mm, since they can push way more air than the normal 120s. pm me some temps, what your computer's loadout is, and maybe a picture of the inside of your case (not really needed), and i'll tell you what to do. or you could sell it and buy my system above
  21. pez, get in touch with me - like i said, i'm flexible. if you give me a price range, i'll see what i can work up.
  22. just a little bump. i've had a few inquiries about adjusting the build slightly. as i said, it's a tweakable build, so if you're not worried about having the flexibility to go SLI in the future or something, i'd be happy to swap out, say, the power supply for a different one, in order to save 70$ or 80$.
  23. except that everyone and their mother knows the SotC mix you did
  24. i'd use melodyne over autotune any day of the week. i'm pretty sure you can use it real-time, but i've never tried it.
  25. b-b-b-bullshit it's not just SC2 overheating those cards, it's shitty drivers by nVidia (seriously, fan issues have been constant over the last two years since they always clock their too far fans down to make them less noisy) combined with terrible hardware on the part of most of the users. MOST games don't have a framerate cap, that's why benchmarks consistently go into the 100s for FPS when you're testing high-end hardware. in other news, thanks to that "bug", i hit 450fps for a second or two the other day. edit: hah! read the liveblogging article that the dude posted. he was playing with a "super-high-end system", with the case door off (thereby destroying any effect his case fans would have, at all) in a house that was 91 degrees! that's, like, the worst thing he could have ever done what's more, his awesome system consists of a four-year-old processor and a three-year-old GPU, based on 65 and 90nm tech respectively. of COURSE it's going to overheat in those conditions. total gold.
