OC ReMixes with unusual instruments?

Recommended Posts

I know a while back we had a thread about unusual instruments. my question is, have there been any posted remixes that make use of funky instrumentation? examples would be like, the carrot flute, theremin or potato ocarina. I think it would be incredibly cool to make a really groovy song using vegetable instruments. not really sure where this thread belongs.

I wouldn't call it 'funky' per se, but jmr did an EXCELLENT Super Mario Galaxy mix that involved great theramin work in its writing. Quirky, yet extremely well concepted.

Well, not to pat myself on the back or anything (which is totally what I'm about to do), but...

http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR02501/ - features Irish low whistle, Uillean pipes, Alpen horn...

http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR01690/ - features hurdy gurdy, duduk

http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR00443/ - features Bulgarian bagpipes and vocals

http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR01799/ - features bizarre woodwind squeaks and brass mouthpiece sounds

http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR02396/ - features an assortment of solo electric bass sounds

http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR01299/ - features Gamelan shakers, steel drums, berimbau, bass xylophone, snake charmer, housefly... and more

http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR00291/ - features koto, shakuhachi, wood flute, and other weird stuff

And oh, there's more... but there are a few. I enjoy the odd instruments quite a bit. :)

Hurdy Gurdy AWWW HELL YEA!! Though I don't see some of these as unusual as meteo says. Though maybe it will be in a few more years when everything is digital and every song has french compression and every listener is braindead from the constant dum-chick-dum-chick-dum-chick-dum-chick-dum-chick... I mean repetitive rhythms.

It seems there is not nearly enough Erhu on OCR. *hint hint*

i wanted to buy an erhu a while back. they seem really hard to play, but it would be a fun hobby to take up. theyre pretty inexpensive too.

odd instrumentation is pretty cool too. I mostly meant really weird stuff like the cell phone or beer bottle. I was curious to see if you could use something really off the wall, and still get it passed by the judged, and it looks like you can!

speaking of instruments, NEED MOAR BAGPIPE MIXES.

Mazedude - Hahaha.

Others - I'm curious, what constitutes an "unusual" instrument to you.

For many, the instruments Chris Getman mentioned would fall in that category.

For others, like me, it would be something like playing a piece of cheese or an mbira. ^_^ I love those things!

maybe i should make start a remix album where the only rule is you have to use one food item as an instrument in the song.

i did see spekio! that was a nice mix.

Well, I did use a Pepsi bottle as an instrument in this track - http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR01015/

All in all I think it comes down to being creative and expanding your arsenal beyond the conventional, over-used sounds. I mean, there are classical, symphonic instruments that we don't see used on OCR often either. Bassoon, for example. Does the make it -unusual-? Or just, unconventional? This conversation reminds me of the debates in composition class at college, heh.
