The People's Remix Competition 349
PRCv14-11

Hello everyone and Welcome to the People's Remix Competition!

Welcome to round 349 of PRC. Two rounds ago, Esperado selected the source and Dewey Newt was the winner. PlanarianHugger and RonaldPoe couldn't stop him. Not Dewey Newt, but his brother selected the source for this round:

On 2017-5-9 at 3:31 AM, Dewey Newt said:

I got a request to cover a Battletoads song from my brother, so I'm picking the bike section of the Turbo Tunnel for this round! I played the SNES version of this game growing up, and man... This game was unforgiving. The Turbo Tunnel was the furthest any of my brothers, cousins, or I ever got. I used to think after the level was beaten, the rest of the levels would be unfinished and glitchy since nobody was going to get passed that level. We always played 2 player too, which made it much more difficult. My brother and I did beat the game finally, using an emulator and save states. It was hard even using those! Beating it and seeing the rest of the levels was awesome, though.

Mazedude has a medley of Battletoads with this tune in it, but no individual mixes on the site, so a good tune to cover in PRC! The MIDI I got was in pretty bad shape, mixing is not good at all. All of the notes are there, though, and I've tried to correct all the errors I heard. Forgive me if there are some wrong notes here and there!

Welcome to the voting stage

The mixing stage is over. This round has 3 songs and bonus mixes by Dewey Newt and NinjaPenguinDan. The following people compete against each other

Dex

PlanarianHugger

RonaldPoe

(if you want a different color, let me know by replying or sending me a PM). I won’t use the pictures anymore since I have issues by getting them at this page).

To vote, do the following:

·       Visit the stated ThaSauce Page and listen to all the entries.

·       Scroll to the form at the bottom of the screen or click PM.

·       Fill in the entries from first to third in the ThaSauce form or fill in your top 3. Participants only need to fill in the first and second box.

·       State a reasoning for it.

·       Do not vote for Dewey Newt and NinjaPenguinDan, these tracks are bonus mixes.

·       Participants are encouraged to vote and leave feedback. However, they may not vote for themselve, they get a free first place if they vote, so it's attractive for the results. Non participants are encouraged to vote to decide the winner and leave comments.

·       Dewey Newt has a vote that counts twice.

·       Always look in this thread to find out who's the winner of the round after the voting stage instead of only looking at ThaSauce for the results. Especially since some people might vote by sending me a PM.

You have until THIS Monday, June 5th 10:59 AM ThaSauce time (18:00 UTC, 19:00 GMT) to vote.

If you vote by PM make sure that your top 3 (or top 2 for participants) is clear. I prefer something like this:

(Subject)

PRC ### Vote

(Message):

1: (remixer A )

I will post the feedback given in the PM’s and the votes in this thread. The winner may choose the source tune for PRC350.

Check the ThaSauce Page to vote or click here to send a PM.

I don't expect to win (I always get last place in these type of contests) but that doesn't mean I didn't work hard on this. I wrote original parts to go with the original theme. There's plenty of interesting drums and an original bassline (though you might have trouble noticing it). I also went for a passive aggressive feel due to the difficulty/infamy of the Turbo Tunnel. Hope someone enjoys it and that everyone has a nice day.

If I win I want a hybrid of "One Winged Angel" (Final Fantasy 7) and primarily "Birth of a God" (Final Fantasy 7). I like to think of what a theme for Bizarro Sephiroth and/or Safer Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts 3 (I imagine it to be a mix between the two pieces). Nobody's mixed these two sources in counterpoint yet. If I don't win, I'm probably going to try that remix anyway ...

Results time.

Dewey Newt and NinjaPenguinD both did a bonus mix.

PlanarianHugger did a nice one, but he only got 10 points and the last place wooden spoon.

RonaldPoe gathered 13 points and ends with a second place.

And another victory for Dex with 17 points.

Dex congratulations. I think you are the first one who wins two rounds in a row. So you may pick the source for PRC351 as well. Send the source to me (with a MID/MP3 file, otherwise send a second source with a MID file) by PM, other options are PM me @ ThaSauce or by e-mailing to bambombim@gmail.com (I prefer a PM @Ocremix). Send your source as fast as you can, but before next Monday (12 June), 10:59 AM ThaSauce time (18:00 UTC, 19:00 GMT).

You may select any source for any game, but not a source with an OverClocked remix or a source which has been used in PRC before. An overview of the past PRC's can be found in the following links:

SURE, the one round I choose to experiment, so does everyone else :-o

I really liked the range of compositions this round, and I am quite surprised I came out on top in the end.

NinjaPenguinDan, I *did* humanize the piano! Oh well, I guess it wasn't enough, and listening to my track again I can hear some parts that feel a little too stiff. Argh. Oh well, it's all part of the learning process, isn't it?

RonaldPoe, I agree with the others who say that you need to turn up the bass lines in your work. There's something interesting going on there but it's really hard to hear. Maybe it sounds good to you but it's not translating - in other words, maybe there's something wrong with your audio monitoring setup. Personal story along those lines: for the first few months I did remixes people would always comment about the lack of low end in my work even though it sounded fine on my end. I was mixing with headphones with a nice and flat low-end frequency response, so what could the problem be? It turns out the problem was that I was plugging them into my speaker's headphone jack instead of directly into my computer's headphone jack, and the speakers were applying a bass boost before passing the signal along! I thought it was just a pass-through connection but I was wrong. So now I just plug my headphones directly into my computer and things are...well, not ideal, but at least much better.

Definitely one of those songs that's so obviously rock you WANT to experiment, lol. I enjoyed the variation as well!

A little tidbit of info on mine, the intro section was sequenced in FL Studios with Super Audio Cart (SAC) providing the instruments. I know SAC was sampled from real hardware and such, but man. It amazed me just how accurate I could get to the original!
