  1. All three remixes were pretty good this round! I'll be looking for some other abnormal song to remix so we can all go crazy with it now that there seems to be more people joining the competition with PRC345.

  2. The wooden spoon... All the easier to try and cook up a winning mix next time. Great job on this one, GCJ! Planarian had a great bonus mix as well.

  3. This is the new soundtrack to my Legend of Zelda/Pulp Fiction crossover fanfic. "Know what they call a quarter-pounder in Gerudo?"

  4. Just the physical part of replicating vibrations in your eardrums is merely a part of what constitutes your actual hearing. After that it's all up to the brain to turn this sensory input into something you can understand. And this is the part of you that is very malleable. We are really constantly subjected to a lot more sounds than what we actually percieve, because our brains get wired to filter out a whole bunch of information we don't deem relevant to needing our active attention. Training ourselves to overcome this is what mostly constitutes "good ears", rather than what the range of our frequency spectrum covers.

  5. And I don't even think the Sonic soundtracks make particularly effective use of the hardware, even if they sound good as they are. Last week I did a cover of Spring Yard precisely for this reason My videos showcase each individual channel so you can kind of see what's going on. But I also made the Deflemask project public so you can download Deflemask and open it there to take a closer look at what I did differently from the original. http://www.deflemask.com/forum/show-off-your-work/sonic-1-spring-yard-zone-(genesis)/

  6. Wow, it's a shame that I missed this last year. I LOVE listening to things like this, but I was never able to figure out how to do that with Genesis channels (I love doing it with NES and SNES games, though). Great handling of timbre on the Sonic track, for sure.

  7. I'm sorry I didn't post the results earlier. Results time. PlanarianHugger did a great bonus song. Dewey Newt got 7 points and the last place wooden spoon. The winner is GCJ with the maximum 9 points. GCJ, congratulations. You may select a source for PRC346. Send the source to me (with a MID/MP3 file, otherwise send a second source with a MID file) by PM, other options are PM me @ ThaSauce or by e-mailing to bambombim@gmail.com (I prefer a PM @Ocremix). Send your source as fast as you can, but before next Friday (7 April), 10:59 AM ThaSauce time (18:00 UTC, 19:00 GMT). You may select any source for any game, but not a source with an OverClocked remix or a source which has been used in PRC before. An overview of the past PRC's can be found in the following links: http://sites.google.com/site/bambombim/prc http://bambombim.googlepages.com/PRCRemixList.doc (also downloadable via the link above). Check the ThaSauce Page for the results and votes.

  8. Ooo, I do love me some Legend of Mana - had to give this a listen. I really like this. The different parts of the track tell different stories to me; I like the structure and dynamic quality of each section. Big fan of the textures I hear throughout the piece too, really adds flavour to the overall feel of this. The only issue I have is that I'm not a fan of the bass synth in the intro and outro; too much 'buzz' for the somewhat atmospheric texture in that part for me. It certainly doesn't impact my enjoyment of this, however! This is great, thanks for posting!

  10. My bad DarkeSword. Didn't even notice these threads were under the music history forum. Just assumed this was the general music forum. Still no excuse for lazy posting on my part. Anyhoo, to dive a bit deeper into why I enjoy the Super Monkey Ball 2 soundtrack in context of the game. Besides sounding good, the juxtaposition between these bright environments and characters with music that becomes increasingly more ambient and darker by the time you reach the last two boss worlds gives a unique feel to the game. Maybe if I had a little more music knowledge and experience I could dig into why that is, but just as someone who enjoys games and music the soundtrack did an excellent job of matching the environments, and in a game where you're dying frequently and having to replay stages countless times over, the last thing the music should do is become a nuisance. Perhaps that's why the music becomes more ambient as the game progresses: to not needlessly draw the player's attention as the difficulty of each stage ramps up. May not have been the intention, but definitely an interesting coincedence.
