  1. Two weeks is great. I apologize for not updating stuff more, but I should be able to do this in two weeks. Make sure to update the thread title with that info, though, so I don't have surf through the thread to get the deadline. EDIT: ...which you just did. Nevermind.
  2. I first heard this mix when someone on the panel sent it to me, and like Shnabubula's other work, I really enjoyed it. It's definitely very quirky and from a technical standpoint, pretty lo-fi. Still, this man definitely knows what he's doing. And even if a lot of people don't "get" it, he's going to be one of my favorites if he keeps submitting.
  3. Now that all the judge panel shit has cleared, I should have time to concentrate on actually mixing. So count me in here and hopefully I can actually show some progress this time.
  4. http://adhesiveboy.no-ip.com/music/dumkirbywip.mp3 This is just under a minute of kind of strange experimentation that's subject to change, with a lot of stuff still to be added. So don't freak because it's disjointed and weird - I'm just showing that I'm actually working on this.
  5. As far as I know, basically all of the videogame music composers who know about this community and have said something, have responded positively to it, and not brought up any copywrite issues.
  6. Peer review should only be used when absolutely necessary (if there's a way around it, I mean, it should be taken). But if there's no way to avoid it, I wouldn't object to peer review. I do believe that only people involved in the project should be allowed to vote on it though.
  7. Yes, it is a 2 CD project. The first CD cutoff is at 10 and then the 2nd CD starts at 11. So tracks 1-10 are the first CD and tracks 11-22 are the second.
  8. Enjoy the project, fgts. Also look for other mixes from the project to be posted on ocr as well.
  9. I don't think a better mix could've be picked to spotlight the project. Vigilante does here what he does well, and the results are awesome. gud job fgt!1
  10. Since no one else has expressed interest in it, I'm going to go ahead and take 41/42. I think the name I'll pick for it will be Li'l Traveller, but I'm not really sure yet.
  11. As I said before, still haven't decided between 18/19 and 41/42. Guess I have a little more pressure to decide now that Sir Nuts wants to do one of them.
  12. I'm split between 18/19 and 41/42. I haven't seen anyone seriously considering either of those yet, so I'll probably have some time to decide.
  13. aw I wanted to do 28/29 (that's rainbow resort, right?). Oh well, I guess there are like a bunch of others to pick. Just glad I hadn't started it yet - people should start laying serious claims on tunes so I know which ones I have left to pick from
  14. Of course, the most organized project with probably the most deserving source material and the best concept gets 2 replies .
  15. Just about 90 minutes before the wave of unfunny call-ins and general choas begins. I CAN"T WAITE!!!!!!111
  16. omfg i can't beleeve sumone so emoshunal 2 me cud do a shittee mixliek tihs i quit ocr. anyway, I haven't heard the original (tried to get midis but they didn't help me much), so I can't judge based on that. The rapping and lyrics are pretty good - star sells them well and the mix is not supposed to be the pinnacle of seriousness anyway. Big problem is melodically it sounds like the piano and string parts were kind of slapped together, lack velocity changes, and are rhythmically awkward in places (as well as feeling a bit isolated and empty in sections). I know a certain degree of rap is using shitty samples like that, but even so there could be much more work done getting everything to fit well. Listening to something like the Asterix mix, I can tell the samples are pretty shitty, but they're never distracting or sound isolated and underdone like this one. Overall, this is entertaining. But I don't think the whatever melody there is applies very well to the mix: either that or not enough was done to apply it well to the mix.
  17. I like the groove here and the sounds are all interesting. The guitar is kind of clipped and lo-fi, but it's done in a way that's non-obtrusive (at least on the speakers I have now) so I don't have any complaints about it. My main issue here is the actual melody - this was a really complex and developed tune from the soundtrack that had a lot of cool subtleties. Here, there are remnants of the original (played by a vibraphone that's a little synthetic for me) to make it recognizable, but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of substance in general. I guess I wouldn't have as much of a problem with it if you couldn't do this with literally any tune from the soundtrack with relatively the same results. In the end it's a interesting and very listenable mix; but that doesn't substitute for the fact that the arrangement itself is pretty underwhelming.
  18. This is a cool idea, but it ends up pretty rough in execution. The arrangement is good - but the mixing and instrument selection are both kind of strange. This is probably the first time I've said this for awhile, but I think the lead flute is actually too dry and could use A LITTLE reverb. The snare is both too loud and mechanical - for a military sound, it really needs to have more believable rolls. As the mix progresses, it adds a tabla which is pretty cool but a bit sloppy, and a sitar that doesn't really fit very well. Some parts tend to get ahead and slightly out of sync, and mainly the mix just drones on. I understand that the idea is supposed to be like a constant march and it's a cool idea, but in the end, the execution is kind of sloppy.
  19. haha. I don't think I can even review this - I'm under too heavily an influence of the 80's to guage what's black and what's white. SENSES OF RIGHT AND WRONG.....FADING!! GARGHHAHHGAHG!111 ...nice cheesy drum machine sequencing, and the lead synth is very well done - though I noticed that it's sometimes too quiet. Nice vocoder effects too: maybe used a little too often, but they still don't annoy me as much as general voice warping does in a lot of other things (AHEM CHER). There's not a lot else to the mix, and I can't say that it's something I'd listen to all the time, but it's very well done for what it is.
  20. The production here is tite (as that punk Larry Oji would say): there are a lot of very cool, subtle effects like the feedback noises that pop up with the chime synth, as well as some cool background ambiance. The drums are nice as well, and do a good job of backing everything up without really getting in the way. The guitar effects are great - and though I figured out right away that it wasn't a real guitar, it's still sonically cool and really adds to the atmosphere of the mix. There are really minor complaints I have: I didn't really dig the bass, and I think the low synth at 2:29 might've sounded a little better shorter. Mainly, my complaint is that the piece is more focused on achieving a certain sound than really expanding upon the original. There's no problem with that at all, but because there's not as much depth to the arrangement, it leaves me with more indifference than usual - more like "hey that's pretty cool" instead of "OMG AWESOME!11". But I don't think it was Mr. Baranowksy's intention, either.
  21. Oh. I remember hearing this in the wip forum and I really liked it. There are minor things I noticed: like I think you went a bit overboard with your reverb, there are some minor mixing things with volume that may or may not because of my speakers - the electronic piano seems a little too loud, and the choir stabs are a little unnverving but used sparingly enough not to be annoying. When it gets to the guitar, I know you're trying hard to make it sound fairly realistic but it just ain't happening. You would've been better off just going with a different and more convincing sample. The big problem I have here is the inclusion of 600 AD - it does create a few odd note conflicts that aren't entirely noticable, but it's mainly just not expanded upon enough. And it's really a shame that this never really builds up to anything; you achieved a really nice sound with the manora cathedral part at the beginning and end, but never really expand upon your ideas, just ending the mix how it started.
  22. The beginning caught me a little off guard. I think some kind of fade - in or more gradual intro would be nice. Anyway, the instrument selection here is good and the piano is nicely done as always. My big problem would be the mixing: I know there's always a sound these types of mix like to achieve, but there really doesn't need to be this much reverb applied. The lower frequencies like the bass and the electronic piano tend to bleed over everything else. And it's a real shame because the flute and oboe are both done pretty nicely but need to be brought out so badly. The strings also tend to get lost in the shuffle - the sample is just generally not appropriate because it attacks too gradually, but it also should be a higher frequency and maybe making two tracks and panning them to each side at about 50% would make it a little richer and enhance the melody. As for the arrangement, I am not familiar with the original, but my assumption (which may or may not be correct) is that this is a pretty close interpretation of it. That's not always bad, and I do think if it were mixed a little better and the dynamics were made a little clearer, it would really help the mix sonically - making it sound less like it's slogging through the original and more like a natural progression.
  23. I was a little dissapointed by this - not really for any reasons arrangementwise or really anything technical. Mazedude has essentially perfected his sound and does it very well. I was mainly dissapointed that most of Mazedude's other mixes that feature pretty complex soundscapes, and in comparison, this seems dulled down. It's not a bad mix by any means - it's a fun mix, like a lot of the stuff Mazedude does, and it's pulled off pretty well. I just feel like he went on autopilot on here instead of putting his usual attention to detail into this. In the end, it still results in a pretty enjoyable piece of music - but it's not nearly as fulfilling as even some of his earlier "fun" mixes.
  24. The piano has some dynamics behind it, but it's drowned out by the excessive delay and ends up sounding more mechanical than it should. The vocal sample is certainly unique, but I have mixed feelings about whether it meshes well with everything else or not - it's kind of akward and synthy, but it's interesting enough to be appealing. The orchestra stabs are too dark and attack a little too gradually, though: the sample being used doesn't fit in the way I think the artist intended it to. And the guitar sample isn't horrible, but it's somewhat mechanical and I think something a little more believable would work much better (or an actual guitar). Some of the bass/drum work is pretty cool like around 3:05, but it's mostly just very repetitive. As is pretty much everything part being played: it has nice elements to it, but I really don't think it's a complete arrangement.
