OCR00800 - Chrono Trigger "The Trial in Concert"
ella guro replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The fact that someone can sit down on the piano and have this come out just amazes me. Still, if I'm going by how well the actual arrangement is, I'd have to only give it a 7/10 or so. I know it sound blasphemous for me to say that, but I just felt the need to be technical. Because, as much as I'm wowed by his mad skillz, it's just not something I can really sit down and listen to. I dunno, perhaps I'll give it another go... -
OCR00799 - Monkey Island 2 "Monkey Brain Soup for the Soul"
ella guro replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This one is simply excellent. Trapezoid shows off a ton of remixing skills here in an extremely entertaining and well-done medley. Sadly, the only Monkey Island I've played is the first one, so I can't really appreciate it to the extent I'm sure huge fans of this one will. But it's awesome anyway, so it doesn't matter! EDIT: I've been listening to it a lot more now, and I'm liking it more and more each time. The first section with the jazzy piano alone is a reason to download this one! EDIT2: Did I mention that I like this one? This is seriously my favorite remix in the last two months, maybe half year. -
I used to think this one was kind of dumb, considering that it really is just the original fairy tune with some countermelodies and stuff changing styles. But now it's very relaxing to me...it's something that I can't say is the best remix, but I can't help listening to it. There really isn't too many of these types of remixes where the original tune is there, and some improvised notes weave in and out over it. Overall, some good stuff...ESPECIALLY if you like the Zelda 3 soundtrack as much as I do (which is a lot).

OCR00353 - Mega Man 2 "Bubble Man (wants to get) Funked Up"
ella guro replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is a great one from DiscoDan, and one of my favorite Mega Man remixes to date. It helps that I really like the Bubble Man theme, but whatever... The instrumentation is solid, and the drums kind of lay down a nice beat while the melody does its thing. It's very pleasing to listen to, which is one of the reasons I'm glad he made this one in the 4-5 minute range. I wouldn't say it's the best ever remix, but it's one that I quite enjoy listening to. -
OCR00313 - Chrono Trigger "Team Gato"
ella guro replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Mustin and Dale North have never been the best voice actors (see the Zelda 2002 remix on their site), but the humor and the sheer awesomeness of the ideas and the variation more than makes up for it, and makes it the best remix on the site, imo. It also seems to get progressively better for me, with each section sort of improving upon itself, until the rap one which just cracks me up every time he says "If you think you can take me, I'd like to see you try...BIATCH!". And with the addition of the little giggles and groans (also the person saying "Uh-oh, here comes trouble") makes it even more worth listening to everytime. Simply a classic remix... -
I'm gonna go completely against everyone here, because I really do not like this one at all. I like some other stuff by Beej, so it's nothing personal, but this almost ruins one of my favorite vg themes. Maybe it's just because I didn't envision this style for the remix, and maybe it's just because I don't like the style, but whatever it is, I don't like this remix. And I'm not sure why people say that this is the best rendition of the Darkworld theme, since there are two great ones from AmIEvil and Gux, but whatever... (On a side note, I don't think me and Rob Saunders like any of the same vg music).

OCR00792 - Donkey Kong Country "Stray Donkey Strut"
ella guro replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I wouldn't say that this is one of the site's best, but it's a damn good remix. I'm not sure about the idea to combine those funky keyboards with big band, but it seems to work decently enough. The big thing I like are all those solos that really sounded like they were improvised. They just sounds perfectly...err...human, as weird as it sounds. The arrangement is really an awesome job on DJP's part, and it's one of his best overall...definitely one to check out. -
OCR00465 - Final Fantasy V "ROBOVoice"
ella guro replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
OMG YES! I'm so glad someone did a mix "making fun" of all the extremist FF fanboys...and I can't believe I just discovered this one. I have a whole new respect to Joe Redifer for having the balls to do something like this with a great robo voice, and most of all, hilarious lyrics. There's not much else I can say here, but "THANK YOU, MR. REDIFER!!" -
This ended up making it on my very first remix CD because it was nice and laid back, in contrast to the previous track I put. I can't really say anything else but this is really nice and makes me smile every time I listen to it. The percussion is really great, too...

I honestly don't think Smithy was too hard. Really, if you think he's hard, you should try Culex in his SMRPG cameo. He's very very difficult, and almost impossible unless you have the lazy shell armor on someone. I do agree with you about the stadium boss in Duke3D...he's VERY difficult and take forever to die...

OCR00786 - Mega Man 2 "Teardrinker"
ella guro replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Seems as if you either really like this one or really don't like this one...I guess it's just one of those remixes... -
OCR00789 - Chrono Trigger "Temporal Distortion"
ella guro replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
What?! Another Chrono Trigger mix!! Arrg! Anyway, this seems like it could easily be in the soundtrack to a new Chrono Trigger game. It has all the ingredients of professionally done music, and the combination just sounds good and very deep. Distortion is good, but a little heavy for me, so I have to sort of put this in the same category as the Doom e1l8 remix as being a remix that is very well done but one I don't dig personally. Pretty much, you'll like it if you're not me... -
Yeah...my man Hermit lays down a nice solid peaceful remix. Not anything too innovative or original, but some great relaxing music here. Call me a crazy bastard, but I actually liked that ocarina the way it is...it sounds...like the original, and it sounds kind of odd but enjoyable (but then I like stuff like that). Overall, good quality, good arrangement, not much else I have to say here. You're off to a good OCRemix start, Hermit...

OCR00786 - Mega Man 2 "Teardrinker"
ella guro replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Uhh...I'm really not sure about the strings here. It almost reminds me of muzak that was layed over the original NSF of the Bubble Man music, and the strings seem to be paying vague attention to what's going on in the melody. I like the idea here, but the background seems to really drown out the melody and kind of add a cheesier effect to the whole thing. It's still very interesting and well done, just not my cup of tea... -
Ugh. It's a good remix, but it JUST NEEDS TO BE LONGER!! It really annoys me that the main melody is only played once, and it doesn't really end well either. I'm not a huge techno fan and everything, but I love the darkworld theme, and I'd really love this one if it was at the very least a minute, perhaps two minutes longer. That's all...

OCR00137 - Super Mario 64 "Liquid Mario"
ella guro replied to Jivemaster's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
No...this has been answered several times, so I think someone might need to log OCR history or something so everybody knows about this. This remix was submitted at the time when McVaffe had three different "Aliases" - one being his original name, one being the fabricated female "Jade Gemini" (who's name this remix was sent under), and the other being "Quasikaotic". He did this supposedly to get different moods so people wouldn't comment on how something doesn't sound like a "McVaffe" remix, but it eventually got too hard to upkeep and he eventually told DJP about it. Needless to say, the remix comments by DJP were never changed, although the artist was corrected. I think the actually first female remixer was (and maybe still is) Starla Peacecraft, aka "injury". Anway, this is a good remix, but not a great one. I'm not a fan of the percussion, mainly because I like loud stuff, and it just seems weak to me. The techno bleepy-bloops in the bassline can get annoying, too, but the lead piano is good when it comes in, and I don't see any other major problems with it. So it's good overall, but definitely not one of McVaffe's best, imo... EDIT: Fixed spelling of something... -
I haven't played Plok and I didn't really like this one when I first listened to it from his site, but I've come to like it a whole lot after listening to it, especially that trombone solo at 1:53. I still don't like some of the instruments that much, but you can tell he had a whole lot of fun doing this arrangement. I must say that this man is a very very talented remixer (and a great trombone player), as if anybody didn't already know that...

OCR00777 - King's Quest V "Concerning Daventry"
ella guro replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Wow. I think I have that exact same flute soundfont. Anyway, I'm not familiar with the original, but this is just overall a good remix. All of the instruments are good quality, and the arrangment is perfectly orchestral. This is nothing extremely astounding or innovative, but it is very solidly done throughout - the length is perfect, every instrument entrance makes sense and sounds great, and the balance is very good. Good job, Orkybash... -
OCR00778 - Donkey Kong Country "Blue Vision"
ella guro replied to Disco Dan's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is arranged well, but it's still too close to the original and probably more thought should've been put into this, because there's a fair amount of remixes that sound almost exactly like the original. Granted, it's a wonderful piece to start with and the quality of this remix is good too, I just think it should be a little more original (but that's just me)... -
When it comes to hard bosses on the n64, I think Jet Force Gemini has that covered (I didn't really find any of the Zelda bosses THAT hard). But overall, I think we can all agree that Konami games have the most difficult bosses.

OCR00323 - Super Mario Bros. 3 "La Samba de Agua"
ella guro replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
God, I can't believe anyone else has reviewed this one. It's definitely one of the best on this site...if you forget that he even played all of the instruments live, it's still an extremely well-aranged remix, and the added fact that he did in fact play the instruments makes it 100% cooler. Forget techno and all of it's bleepy-bloopy synthesized crap, this is all I need (well something like that anyway )... -
OCR00188 - Super Mario RPG "Bukki's Tango"
ella guro replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
You can post reviews any time you want to. After all, the remixes are all new to the people who are just discovering this site. Anyway, McVaffe is an awesome contributor (as we all know), but some of his remixes are better than others. This, imo, is one of the better McVaffe remixes - it's pleasent to listen to, has a fair amount of variation, and the sound quality is very good. -
OCR00768 - Barbie Super Model "Plastic Goddess"
ella guro replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I'm not sure what DJP was talking about, because I really like this remix. Some nice haunted sound-effects with some great drumming and a nice addition with the "plastic godessssss" at the end. The synth didn't really bother me, because it wasn't mind-numbingly loud (like a certain DJP mix), but that's just me... -
OCR00163 - Final Fantasy VI "The Atomizer"
ella guro replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I used to complain (well sorta) that there weren't enough weird or crazy remixes on this site. That complaint is no more thanks to this awesome mix by Mustin, who is quite frankly the man. Some nice remixage all around - I especially like the "Gave over man!" quote and all the Final Fantasy sounds near throughout the mix. Great Great job. Without a question, one of the best remixes on this site. -
OCR00767 - Bomberman II "Bomberfuzz"
ella guro replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Yeah...sometimes the page messes up the length and the bitrate. I'm not sure why it does, but it does. Anyway, I really enjoyed this one. The voice samples were a bit overused and became annoying at times, but it has some good samples, and is varied enough for my tastes. The section from 1:39 to 2:06 was also a really good addition to the piece and keeps everything intresting. Very nice job on this one...
