  1. Production-wise, it's now cramped & muddy. Also, I'm underwhelmed by the sound design and would love to hear something to give these synths more personality and uniqueness. This got the job done when the mixing was cleaner and more spacious, like a strong club mix, but now it's just murky. Arrangement-wise, it still gets it done. I'm surprised I'm changing my vote, but the first version was cleaner, and this unfortunately isn't. Maybe I'll be the outlier again, and I don't know which way others will go, but this was a significant step back for me re: the mixing. NO (resubmit)
  2. Great point by Chimpazilla on the percussion intensity being static and boring after a while; the core pattern was mixed too loudly, which exacerbated the problem, IMO. It's definitely a ding against it, because it undermined the dynamics of the piece, but I didn't think it was a dealbreaker. I can get past it, but the way this was mixed was needlessly cluttered. Emu mentioned not being able to isolate what was causing it, but maybe someone else can. Anyway, no dealbreakers here, just issues I would rather not have heard. The theme's handled creatively in terms of the chiptune and guitar treatment of the source tune, and the chorusing of the two parts first done at :58 sounded pretty sweet, IMO. At 1:36 when the extra padding dropped out to clear up the soundscape, things sounded better until 1:55. And even though the soundscape was then loud & cramped again, I could distinguish the various parts easily. As I like to say, on the seesaw of what works vs. what doesn't work, this is tilted enough towards what does work. I think Emu makes a good case, but for me the good arrangement and OK-though-not-ideal production should be a pass. YES
  3. The water SFX combined with the ambiance ended sounding lossy, but the overall soundscape was OK. I didn't have any problem with the bell at :53. The way the track faded out at the end was too fast/abrupt as well. The change in styles is apparent, so the approach is certainly personalized, and this would have been a lock in the older days of the site. For the present though, I felt like I heard 2 and half iterations of the melody (:05, :53, 1:34) with some observable but relatively minor variations, some good weaving of some brief original writing, and the SFX, and that was it. It could definitely use another minute or two of further ideas and development. If this passes, I wouldn't have a problem with that, but IMO the concept, while subtle and good, could use further fleshing out. I didn't agree that this felt like a fully realized piece. NO (resubmit)

  5. Damn, she was awesome. Loved her work.
  6. Thanks for the game correction for the pic. I think Dafydd's implying the quote is odd in the sense that maybe someone killed Ryo's father in the Sega All-Stars racing game series. But yes, the quote is accurate.
  7. For any musicians at MAGFest who want to use an afternoon to create a VG soundtrack or SFX, Global Game Jam's gonna be holding an event during the festival. Check it out:
  8. We're LIVE! http://youtu.be/FEWhOJ9IEyw
  9. Sounds lovely. A couple months ago, we tested it on other browsers and it was Chrome only. Looks like djp's gotta address it as a broader issue.
  10. We're definitely aware of this, but thanks for bringing it up again. It's a Chrome thing, and this doesn't happen in other browsers. djp may be able to explain what's changed in Chrome but I'm not sure if he has plans to work around this issue vs. working on OCR v6. IMO, it's ENOUGH of a UX annoyance that we should see if it can be fixed.

  13. Super Mario Wario'll be out for New 3DS in no time! Might as well feel free to do callouts for the two front runners in the new mascot voting, Banjo & Kazooie and Knuckles (see what I did there?).
  14. Don't be a dick, it's needless. De-escalate, plz.
  15. I'll nag djp about that, but even with a last-post-first layout, there's still the first post to look at. Gotta look!
  16. You can delete you own threads by clicking to edit your initial post and deleting it. That said, I see mostly Remix Requests. That stuff's fine, we like those. In my opinion, don't worry about it.
  17. I'm planning on being there.
  18. OCR-tan's fine since that's an OC made for the site. Maybe one day. The 50 characters you can vote on are in the first post. Professor Layton's already a mascot. Read the first post.

  20. Sorry that I missed this thread. I can't speak to the formatting of the VARIAtions tracks, since that wasn't formally released through OCR (we should re-release it), but I just downloaded "Visions of Kin" and had no problems with it on Winamp 5.666 or 2.95. Was it a copy from the latest torrent set or it is an old copy? Try downloading a fresh copy if you haven't already. It's possible an old copy had MP3 validation issues like Rozo mentioned, but even then I've not seen files like that crash Winamp or have difficulty playing. Lemme know if any more information turned up on the issue.
  21. For the mascots, they're low-res versions of character images paired with information from the bios, so, not that I'm a lawyer, but I believe we have an instance of fair use. We've taken down mascots by request, but overall we're not worried about infringement due to the nature of the usage. We're not going to use unrelated non-VG characters as our mascots, since we're a video game arrangement site. That said, when we change forums (hopefully sometime in Q1 2015), people should be able to upload their own avatars and you can use whatever you want, including the OC you're developing. If you want to vote on the 3 characters from the OP that you'd like to see added to the rotation, go for it!
  22. For a 3:39-long piece, I needed at least 109.5 seconds of overt source usage for it to dominate the arrangement. 05-:17, :18-1:00, 1:07-1:10, 1:44-1:47, 1:56-2:01, 2:12.5-2:37, 2:39-2:43.5, 2:45.5-2:49, 2:51.5-3:04, 3:18-3:35 = 127 seconds or 57.99% overt source usage Short and sweet, the snare drum writing in particular was bland; some more spice there would have this sounding more spirited and sophisticated. The backing writing as a whole sounded thin IMO, but you got some good mileage out of these sounds for sure. Overall, the texture was strong. I really enjoyed the creativity, energy and variations on the themes (including the "Green Hill Zone" guest appearance at 1:44). Let's go! YES
  23. OC ReMix Presents Dungeonmans Remanstered! January 12, 1015 Contact: press@ocremix.org Now for your listening pleasure, OC ReMix presents Dungeonmans Remanstered, a FREE arrangement album featuring 14 mixes of Andrew "zircon" Aversa's soundtrack to Dungeonmans! Buy it on Steam if you're into rogue-likes, old-school RPG's, and, well... dungeons. The album features McVaffe, Joshua Morse, WillRock, Inverse Phase, Sir Jordanius, and more... even if you HATE literally everything about dungeons OR mans, you need to check this album out for the amazing musics. "Anytime someone takes the time to create an arrangement or interpretation of your original work, it's a wonderful feeling. So, to hear so many talented folks take on Dungeonmans is truly special," says Dungeonmans composer Andrew Aversa. "I was absolutely thrilled at the quantity and quality of remixes from both the friends that I personally invited, as well as the musicians who submitted to the contest. From hard rock and funk to EDM and chiptunes, I absolutely love every minute of it." Dungeonmans is an epic roguelike adventure by Adventurepro Games inspired by classic RPGs and dungeon crawlers, now available on Steam. Create a unique champion and enjoy dozens of hours of tactical combat, deep character customization, and exploration of a world that is randomly-generated each time you play. Aversa's score and song names for Dungeonmans (score available at OverClocked Records) were strongly inspired by Final Fantasy Tactics composer Hitoshi Sakimoto. "Ever since I became a composer, I've wanted to write a soundtrack to a game like Dungeonmans; something that hearkens back to my days of playing classic 16- and 32-bit RPGs," Aversa noted. "The developer, Jim Shepard, shares my love of these games and their soundtracks. He's very passionate about game music. Working on this project was thus a fantastic creative experience and the final result is, in my opinion, my finest score to date."
