  1. VGMix has a Lost & Found thread that may be able to help you. I'll take some time and go through these tonight. Good luck in the meantime.
  2. Say it with me: "Koji. Kondo." Koji Kondo. Encode the piece at a higher bitrate next time or that Lex Luger YouTube clip will return!!! Not often you see Jesse going "guh?" That was definitely worth it. And your T-shirts are too tight too, Billy! http://www.zophar.net/usf/lozusf.rar - 26 "Zelda's Theme" Decent usage of sound effects. A little cheesy & n00bish, and they could blend in more seamlessly (e.g. the ocean fading out too quickly at :27 & cutting off at 2:36), but still a cool idea. I liked the melodic interpretation here on the source. I'm not as put off by the lack of major emphasis on beat 1 as pixietricks is. Convention is well and good, but not something I hold on strongly to; this seems to be fine without the convention. By 1:46, the repetition of the melodic arrangement dragged, but then 2:02 moved on into some new territory. Tempo change from 2:13-2:21 was decent. All in all, a decent work-in-progress. The major complaint I had was the lack of dynamic contrast. Right now, the energy level hovers at one place and the pacing is very plodding. Like pixie alluded to, it would help if the instruments sounded more fluid, and I also agreed with her that the textures were on the sparse side. You've got some good initial ideas in place and just need to work on refining your sounds. The ReMixing & Works forums should be your next stops, particularly ReMixing. NO (resubmit)
  3. Part 4, a brief summation of the 3 years of the VG Frequency radio show, is up and available for perusal at the VGF blog. If you have thoughts or memories of the VGF radio show to share, I'd love to hear them over at the blog or here in the thread. Your memories are sure to differ from mine. I took a couple of weeks off from the blog and OCR in general (though with OCR, a couple of weeks off might well be about 20 hours a week) to focus on my job search, which has turned out excellent. I recently obtained a position at a law firm with a great working environment, a nice salary and strong benefits. I'm looking forward to paying off my student loans in the next 5 years so I can finally be debt free. Once I get my bearings in terms of how much free time I'll have at the end of a normal day, I'll be able to devote more time to the hobby work of VGF. Excellent. Once Part 5 of my scintillating hobby's life story is out there, hopefully the blog will be moved to a new home and I can follow through with adding on staff members to provide the lion's share of the blog's content. Y'all enjoy what's there for now, and my sincere thanks for reading.
  4. Contact info: - Primee133 - Chris - primee133@hotmail.com - http://primee133.deviantart.com/ ReMix info: - The Legend of Zelda 2: Link's adventure - Temple theme I had just recieved Fruity Loops not too long ago, and I was ready to experiment. I started out with simple stuff, as in copying the notes from my video game music sheets to the computer, and this song kinda just... stuck.. I liked it, and had an idea. See, I've been a fan of OCReMix.org for quite a while, and always wanted to constribute something to here, so I decided to make a ReMix of this song. took a while to make, even longer because of a little problem... you see, my program had a bug; I couldn't save projects *jubilations* So I started it out, after around 14 hours of work, it was time to go to bed, so I put the computer in sleep mode. I later got up for something to eat, and lo behold, SOMEONE had turned off the computer, erasing ALL my data! Thank god I exported an early version and was able to regain most of it by ear, at the cost of absolutely no sleep that night, that is. So another 14 hours later, I got it finished. And just in time, the computer had been turned off AGAIN. Now here's where there's the second twist; I listen to some of the other remixes, which I should have done before starting this, and noticed something strange. I missed out an entire section of the song, which apparently wasn't written in my music sheet for some reason *More jubilations* I really can't be arsed to redo it all again... so I'ma just gonna post it... maybe someday I'll finish it (Not likely though.) I think it turned out pretty well for my first try at a remix and at FL. ------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.zophar.net/nsf/zelda2.zip - Track 8 Hmm. You've got an ethereal intro with pads (some light pops at :09, :12 & :14, possibly at a loop point for the pad), but then...some thin sounding guitar work. It clearly has some reverb on it to thicken it up, but it's not strong enough to carry the piece along with the pads. The textures were thin until :55 despite all the activity, IMO. The sequencing was way too rigid, well evidenced by the transition from 1:05-1:12. Everything with the timing sounded stiff and robotic, especially the acoustic guitar sample handling the countermelody. Meanwhile, the textures were too simplistic and the the interpretation of the melody played it too straightforward. Get more creative there. That one bass drum hit first brought in at :41 was used so excessively, it was going out of style. I also didn't like the sound disparity between the background (meant to sound washed), and the sequenced acoustic guitar (sounding way too clean), especially when exposed at various points during the chorus (1:27-1:36). Things should sound like they're in the same soundscape. The sequenced electric guitar brought in around 2:10 was a good concept in terms of changing the dynamics. The execution was no good though. Afterward, the arrangement got more creative in some places, in terms of interpreting the theme as well as adding original sections. But the rigid sequencing and production from beforehand simply carried over. The textures lacked meat, and the timing was too perfect and unrealistic. If you wanna get your music flowing better and sounding more cohesive, you're gonna have to invest more time in addressing those issues. NO
  5. Remixer Name: Jewbei Remixer E-Mail: jjoyner17@yahoo.com Remixer Website(s): www.myspace.com/jewbeii and jewbeii.googlepages.com Name of Game(s): Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Song: Emerald Hill Comments: My man Jewbei didn't give me any comments... although this song was created as a battle against DJ Econcerto to see who can do a better mix Link to the higher quality version is: Link to Mix: -SkullFire PS: I have permission from Jewbei himself, feel free to email him and ask if SkullFire has permission ;D ----------------------------------------------------------- Pretty decent power to open things up, though the encoding being so lossy hindered it a bit. Not a good idea to sub this long of a mix and somehow not expect the sound quality to suffer. Not sure if there was a little bit of distortion going on, but the volume was a bit rough. At around 9 minutes long, this definitely has a ways to build, so it gets leeway in those respects. 2:18's worth of buildup that had nothing to do with the source at all sounds like a dealbreaker, but we'll hear how it all turns out. Source came in at 2:18. Decent stuff with the synth pads in back, as well as the buildup fading in starting at 2:34. The melody's treated pretty uncreatively, so the focus is on the other elements to carry the weight. Once the beats came in at 2:46, things felt distorted and cluttered. 3:14-3:42 dropped out the melody in favor of a minimalist section based off the progression of the original. 3:42-4:24 went for an original section loosely based on a Sonic the Hedgehog feel for the lead synths. 4:24 went into some completely original material that had 0 to do with Sonic 2 featuring sampled Kate Lesing vocals. Some very cursory research showed that the vocals are royalty-free and sold for uses like this, so that's on the up-and-up. But still, what the hell's up with this section? This is supposed to be a Sonic 2 rearrangement, not a trance mix with only a couple of minutes of Sonic even in it. When you have original ideas, they need to seamlessly connect with the parts that are arrangement. This here was just a sloppy cut-and-paste quality addition. Went like this all the way until 7:12, with an equally poor transition back to the "Emerald Hill Zone" material. Sonic 2 stuff at 7:12 arranged the chorus, again treating the melody with little interpretation, until 7:40 went for something more interpretive within the structure of the genre and stayed there. Everything was cluttered and distorted on the production side for the last couple of minutes as well. Well, if you cut the fat out of this one (i.e. 3 minutes of stuff in the middle having nothing to do with Sonic 2) you get a lot more leeway to bump up the encoding quality. The production needs an overhaul; right now this is really messy, especially when things kick into high gear. The arrangement is pretty weak. You have some observable base ideas in trying to adapt the Emerald Hill Zone to trance, but they're not nearly interpretive or sophisticated/complex enough. Keep working toward improvement, you've got the initial skills and need to develop them. NO
  6. Pretty old stuff. Hope this one isn't DOA, since it's been a long time anything's been updated. Well, being performed live would be a plus, but the arrangement does seem really conservative, as indicated in the first post. Depends how well the overall execution is personalized. Doing a cover is cool, and it'll be well received no matter what. But as far as OCR's standards on interpretation, I'm not feeling how most of the arrangement is so straightforward. More could be done to add a unique flavor to the fact that a marching band would be performing this. I'd suggest more structural leeway and creativity with the supporting instrumentation or a lot more expansion in the part-writing if you plan to keep the melody near 1-for-1. In any case, I'm just basing it off the MIDI sketch, so it remains to be seen what else is brought to the table by the sheer number of performers involved.
  7. Original Decision: http://ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=8867 Your ReMixer name: Digital Element (formerly Section 3 Studios) Your real name: Maurice Willems and Sanjay Sampatsing. Your email address: NemesisTheory@gmail.com Your website: N/A Your userid: I forgot (still). Name of game(s) ReMixed: Sonic 3 Name of individual song(s) ReMixed: Ice Cap Zone Your own comments about the mix : Hey! Resubmitting time. =D We've listened to your comments and tried to recreate what we've tried to do in Polar Groove, only with a lot more smoosh and woosh this time around. ;p In other words, tried to combine both sides of the fence into one whole package. Hopefully this will be, in your eyes, better than Polar Groove. If not, we'll be back at the drawing boards once more! Formerly known as Polar Groove, now known as Breaking the Ice. Has a better ring to it. ;o Hope you'll enjoy. Additional suggestion: Pump up the volume... again!
  8. The new content policy says you must offer zircon your first-born child as an indentured servant as payment.
  9. What's a Stemm? Bribery! It should have been Armcannon!
  10. He may show up later, but it's Memorial Day weekend, so AFAIK he's out for now.
  11. Dunno who you can blame, but feel free to try blaming Best Buy if you're sure the cord wasn't messing up beforehand. Honestly, if it was close to fraying, you should have noticed. No matter what, you'll have to make sure you know the model # and purchase a new one.
  12. Ha! Yeah, I hear the connection. No idea what the significance is though. The game music could have been inspired by the original, or the other way around; no idea which came first.
  13. There are light glitches/pops at :07, :12 and :18 that could stand to be fixed, but they aren't dealbreakers. Unreal Tournament OSV - "Foregone Destruction" Well, I'm certainly interested in seeing what direction this goes in after a second resubmission. Intro seems pretty straightforward, finally changing up at :47. Lead at :50 felt flimsy despite the effects. The beatwork joining in at 1:00 helped flesh things out more, but I can't help but feel like the overall texture was underwhelming. Feels like the sound balance from 1:12-1:35 could be tweaked so that the sounds don't mush together. It's not terrible, but the various sounds aren't distinct. A lot of the percussion patterns are being drowned out, making the beatwork seem too simplistic on its own. Same goes for the supporting synths seeming very muffled and low. It definitely all undermines the complexity and layering presented in the writing. 1:37 moves over into what's basically the source's chorus. 2:00 goes for a changeup into some synths, before bringing back 1:12's lead at 2:07. Feels like there's something missing to this to really drive the song forward. After 2:12, it feels like there's a lot of volume and effects to give this a thicker sound, but in reality the texture's kind of thin. Same issues as with 1:12-1:35 where the flooded soundfield ends up obscuring a lot of the supporting ideas, making the track seem very simplistic. I'd address those issues with the synths and beats being drowned down. Right now, the arrangement is more where it needs to be. But with the sound textures seeming so simple during the beefier sections, the track creates the impression of lacking substance where it counts. Good luck on the rest of the vote, Kai. NO (refine/resubmit)
  14. Saw this badass sig from The Shizz, courtesy of matsunami: Could anyone make 32x32 images of the fighters with their regular faces, with the game background included? Could also be from the matchup screen, if those images don't look bad with a resize. EDIT: Oh shit, don't forget Mr. Dream.
  15. What a good turnout so far. I've decided to make username changes (only through me, mind you) a permanent feature of the boards. The quick info's in the first post. If I can hook you up, let me know.
  16. Not stepping over Douli or TO's toes, but this is fine. It wouldn't be the first competition of this type originating from the OneUp Studios boards. And keep it mind, it IS a competition. He's asking for everyone to compete in order to win the prize. Let it ride, I say. Also, if anyone has qualms about a cash prize, either request Almasy to donate it to a charity of your choice, or donate the money yourself.
  17. It's your call. I do like your current name though.
  18. How about everybody submit a mix that isn't from any of the Castlevania, Chrono, Donkey Kong Country, Final Fantasy, Mario Bros., Mega Man, Seiken Densetsu, Sonic the Hedgehog, Xeno, or Zelda series?
  19. 28 tickets x $37.44 = $1048.32 Gonna head to the Kennedy Center shortly to make the final purchase. Thanks to everyone who ponied up the dough. Make sure you have OCR T-shirts to sport at the concert. If you DON'T have a t-shirt, djpretzel has a nice stash at his house. Holler at me, and I can find out if he has the size & color you're looking for. I don't believe we have new hoodies yet though. In any case, shirts will be at the special $10 price, since there's no shipping costs and y'all are right here in the DC area to represent. At this point, we'll be... 1) Definitely figuring out who's game for Saturday night's concert (We probably won't be able to buy at a discount, but let's try to group together out seating!) 2) Doing some informal planning about how we're gonna be hanging out on VGL weekend 3) Coordinating rides 4) Promoting these upcoming DC concerts
  20. While it's easier on many levels to arrange older, less complex tracks, newer music has exciting possibilites of its own. I'd say dig around chiptune sites and listen to various NSFs, VGMs, SIDs and the like. There's lots of music from the NES, Genesis/Megadrive and Commodore 64 that will catch your attention, often from games you may have never played.
  21. Yes, right away, sir! Yes, right away!
