  1. Nice concept for sure. As my brown colleagues said before me, the balance is a tad off. I don't think the drums are that loud compared to the rest although I must say I'm in favor of loud drums. However the melodic elements really need to be more up front to keep this from getting stale. Your sounds are on the thin/lifeless sound. For example the bass sounds like a cheap general midi-soundcard and the drums could be beefed up quite a bit. For example the hi-hat sounds very flimsy. Something else that struck me was that no matter how advanced the rhythm sequencing was, velocities wasn't really utilized to full effect. For such a drum centered piece I would've expect more careful programming of the drums. Try getting some better samples that are also velocity sensetive as it would really help your drum track feel like a drumtrack instead of stiff (but creative) MIDI-programming. Arrangement-wise you have some good ideas, drum solo's nice and someting not often seen. Some more melodic interpretation would turn this up a notch, maybe some edgier synth lead arranging the source melody. Work on making the arrangement feel cohesive without feeling repetitive! Variation is the key. The main problem for me is how weak this is in the sound department. Try working with EQ/Compression while balancing your parts to perfection. Other than that I recommend looking up some fresh samples to keep the texture full (bass and drums especially). This shows a lot of promise but will need more work before I can pass it. NO
  2. just because you said that I got all sentimental and thus I remembered: Diablo II: Lord of Destruction - the item-fetish I got while playing this is just straight up scary and since it IS a game that you could finish in a day (but continue playing forever) I've played this too many times.
  3. you forget, I own the panel > (Larry Oji is my other alias) EDIT: I totally started a plug man remix.. we'll see if it makes it out of WIP stage
  4. Now you made me wanna make you eat your words.
  5. It seems last.fm only allows 30 second clips of the latest mixes. Should it do that? If so, I don't like it D:
  6. Right off the bat the song is a bit too dry but it's minor. Good enough mixing for a live preformance imo. Could probably be a little bit louder but it's not easy to achieve with this kind of recording without destroying the dynamics. Arrangement-wise this is full of interesting ideas and quirks. Most of the transitions were well handled but I felt that 2:10 wasn't handled that well. Some instruments are definitely out of tune at times. This is outweighed by the overall good performance and arrangement though. I especially like the choir, nice work right there. And damn, crowd noise! Gotta love it. So yeah, this adds up to a yes. Portal fans will finally be satisfied (even though the cake is a lie). YES
  7. I'm a timbale. Motif ES piano is trés bien. You can't really require a better fake-piano than this. The production was also crystal clear. Now get Motif ES8 so you can play all octaves D: In any case, very pretty arrangement of the source. Fairly close in terms of melody but you've gone the extra mile and spiced it up with melodic additions and chord changes to make this a very pleasing arrangement. You could probably have made this a finger-jerk session but I think this arrangement is terrific as is, additions like 1:23-1:35 are small but gives the piece that extra something that is needed. Not the most adventurous arrangement but solid enough for my yes. YES
  8. Or submitting a lot of remixes and getting rejected or even worse, getting accepted
  9. This was pretty cool, a lot of interpretation of the sources. The arrangement was clever and putting the two themes together worked surprisingly well. I think the transition could've been even stronger but it's minor and you didn't have a lot of time for this. The repetition is not bothering me because of the overall interpretation of the source at that part, as zircon said: it just felt natural. I thought the samples was quite weak, especially the lead at 2:26. It's a bit too detuned to take that role. It's also quite flat and piercing at times. Reminds me of the Animal Crossing whistling *shudders*. I'd prefer if this was changed before this goes up but it's ultimately nothing that makes me go the other way with my vote if this one's in a hurry. Otherwise the production was clean and all good. YES(conditional lead fix/change if there's time)
  10. I <3 this. Interesting textures and sweet groove. Keep doing what you're doing! Edit: Impossible to stop listening to this! Fantastic stuff.
  11. This has some good moments and some weak moments. The soundscape feels empty which might have to do with how you processed the samples. It feels like there's something missing in the background, everything's also mixed very low. The drums lack punch and sounds very weak. On the other hand the guitar has a good sound and is well played. The organ is okay too even though some awkward cut-offs like at 2:52 keeps it from sounding like it's one with the piece. The transitions between the different sections could've been better. There's not much interpretation of the melodies either, like Larry pointed out. However the soloing is quite cool and works well. Overall this needs a lot of work despite being a cool idea for an arrangement. Work on how you handle the arrangement, transitions and interpretation especially and then start touching up the production. NO
  12. Absolutely all songs, that was my point! Take remixers you think can handle it and start distrubting Origins to them and let the remixing begin :3 ah well, I think it's something that has to be done >
  13. Good post right there. Honestly though pixie, release an electro-remix album of Origins! Bring some or all of the winners onboard together with Andy and whoever. Profit or not for profit, it'll be awesome. I would also have more time to work with a remix (and probably in other programs than Reason that handles audio rofl) and that would be fun :3
  14. haha, no worries I set out to make a remix, not a ReMix. Basically an enhanced electro version and not much more. Thanks for thinking it sounds superb though
  15. Thank you? :/ Anyway, a lot of cool entries and I'm glad I won Great work everyone, I'll be in touch Jill ;*
  16. Great performance and clear mixing like the previous votes said. Nothing wrong there. I really like the bass sound and the guitar rhythms. As Larry said the bass hinting at Sagat in the original section was definitely a nice touch. However it feels slightly coverish. Up to 1:30 it plays very close to the source even in terms of sounds. The added keyboard chords were nice but it didn't make it feel less like a cover. The differences between the four repetitions of the main theme are very minor and thus the first 1:30 feels very repetitive at the third repeat. I know I'm echoing the previous posters but well, the original section was nice and a good section. The ending would've been okay if you hadn't repeated almost the same thing four times already. Good track, clean production and well played but too much of a cover instead of an interpretation of the source. I say like Vinnie, I don't think it's right for OCR. NO
  17. Hell. Yeah. Awesome. Actually this is the kind of thing I've always loved to see! The sheer ammount of shmups that could come out of this is dazzling. Keep me posted with interesting stuff like this Shariq ;*
  18. I totally love it but I'm totally dying at level 2 all the time Need to play it more though.
  19. I clumsily filed these under clicks and pops. Edited to make my post clearer.
  20. I can't do much but agree with my beloved brown colleagues Larry and Vinnie. Production is all good, I'd love a little more presence in the drums but that's a highly personal opinion. It's mostly balanced and my only complaints are personal ideas about how instruments should sound, no dealbreakers here. It's a very cool piece. You're all very talanted musicians, that's for sure. The solos are very nice and the flow you guys get together is admirable. What you actually did to the source when it was present was also pretty damn cool. Sadly this is too liberal for OCR, and with such a short source it's not that strange either. I'd love to see what you could've done with a longer source or if you'd incorporated another source in the mix. Solos are all well and good but what I'd really want to see (and I know you can pull off) is more arranged material. I hope you guys keep submitting and that your next piece is less liberal because this is some great stuff and I would love to see it at OCR! NO
