  1. This honestly isn't far up from a cover of the original. There were some interesting sound choices, and while I wasn't crazy about the lead choice, I thought the other sounds worked well. There needs to be more arrangement to this. I'd suggest listening to the recently posted mixes and comparing them to their sources to get an idea of how those mixers changed things around. I'd also suggest using our WIP forums to get feedback on the arrangement as you develop it. NO
  2. As mentioned above, there's nothing exactly wrong with the track, but right now it feels a little generic, a little static, and a little drawn out. Some expansion on the dynamics would definitely be an improvement, and I agree that shortening the piece would help keep things from going on for too long. I hope to see this one again. NO (please resubmit)
  3. I think the idea you have for this is actually pretty cool, but as mentioned, the production is what is really killing things, and you are relying heavily on loops. If those things can be addressed and fixed up this would be a lot of fun to listen to. Please use our WIP forums to get this cleaned up. NO (resubmit)
  4. Not much to add onto what OA said. It's cool that you managed to convert this entire source, but it pretty much sounds like a cover with some touches added here and there. I'd suggest listening to the most recent posted remixes on the front page and comparing them to the source tunes to get an idea of what we are looking for in terms of arrangement and production for the site. NO
  5. I agree with the guys that overall the arrangement is pretty standard, but there is some personalization in there, and the arrangement itself is nice to listen to. There just isn't that 'wow' factor that really gets me pumped, but I think it gets close at some points. The compression is definitely the biggest issue here, and it really should get looked at. Along with that some more work on the drums could add some energy or more interest to this, as Vinnie mentioned. It's close. NO (please resubmit)
  6. I think there is a good base here for an arrangement, but you need to flesh the entire piece out with your ideas. As Andrew said, there are some moments where you have some nice ideas, but mostly things are sticking to the source. The second half pretty much is the same as the first, making things sound repetitive. Production is pretty decent overall, but the guitar and drum sounds to stand out as needing some work. I think it's a start, but needs work in terms of arrangement especially. Please make use of the WIP forums to get some feedback. NO (resubmit)
  7. Very little I can add to the votes above. I love the control you have over your sound on the long notes (and there are a lot of them!) on the flute. My very amateur playing lets me know just how hard it is to hold a steady tone on a flute on passages like that. The two sources go very well together, although I wish there'd been some melodic variation here and there. I do wish there'd been a flute solo to really let you shine, but the guitar solo does help in that aspect. As mentioned above, a little panning would have helped, but it's very minor. The production is pretty solid otherwise. YES
  8. This is a pretty long track overall. The transitions are done well, but it's not hard to separate each theme from one another. I'm a fan of spending more time on one theme to add more variation and adaptions to it rather than a medley, but this does get the job done in terms of arrangement. OA is absolutely right that the track gets a crowded in some spots. I think working on the balance and eq on this is really going to help things out. It might just be me, but I'm getting some static on the guitar in some spots. You might want to check with some people to confirm or deny that. The ending also could use some fleshing out as well. I think you're close, but this needs some work yet. NO (resubmit)
  9. Not much to say that's different. The mechanical piano is instantly noticeable; I'd say it's fairly detracting, but not a deal-breaker. After things get started the whole song stays pretty much on source but with the genre change. It's a fun listen, and the production is good, but I'd have liked to see more adaptions. The vote sounds negative, but honestly it's very obvious the work that went into this, and the genre adaption is very nice. I'm going to have to throw the borderline YES on this as the others did, and I wish you luck with the rest of the vote.
  10. 0:22-0:37 0:38-0:47 0:54-0:56 1:01-1:03 1:09-1:25 2:10-2:14 2:18-2:20 2:26-2:28 2:37-3:05 That's what I'm hearing as a bare minimum of source usage. I'll agree that it's a little low, but there aren't many times when you are going for a long stretch without hearing something recognizable as the source. Add to that the fact that the structure is somewhat similar to the original, and there were a couple of places that used familiar chords that I didn't count, and I think there is enough to make it easily recognizable. Aside from that, I can agree with Andrew for most of this vote. The piano is a bit stiff, but like Vinnie it doesn't really bother me that much. The strings are a different matter as they really don't seem to fit in time-wise or attack-wise into the mix. Negative stuff aside, I really enjoyed how the original was transformed into a super-laid back track, and the style really worked for the source melody. The overall soundscape worked pretty well, and the soloing was nicely done. I'll agree the source usage is low, and it will throw my vote to a borderline, but I'm comfortable giving this a YES
  11. There is no way that I get 'Lingering Lust' from this arrangement. Sounds more like a wedding day to me. Regardless, there is pretty much nothing I can add to the votes above. Very classy writing here, and it's a nice listen. The mechanical strings and the panning are a little distracting, but not a deal breaker here. YES
  12. Not much to add to what the gentlemen above have already said. The guitar is easily the best instrument, and really packs a lot of energy on it's own, but it gets dragged down by the various issues with the balance and blend with the other instruments. The fade-out ending also isn't really holding ground. Like Vinnie said, it feels like it's about to go somewhere else, and then just ends. I feel like there's plenty of potential in this, but it will also take a good deal of work. I suggest definitely making use of the WIP forums to get some feedback on this and resubmitting! NO (resubmit)
  13. As Stevo said, congrats on your 50th mix post. It's certainly a milestone that few will see! I'm going to have to say that this mix certainly attains a level of creepiness that is very appropriate for Halloween night. The repetativeness of the piece and the industrail production definitely adds to that. I can't say that I'm really a fan of the mix, partly because I feel like the mix doesn't really build or grow as much as I'd like. However, the mix works for the style it's going for, and is produced very well.
  14. Happy Birthday!!!!!

  16. Remixer: Hy Bound Game: Mass Effect Song: Uncharted Worlds Composers: Jack Wall, Sam Hulick Song Name: Uncharted Depths Hey guys! So I was super excited for Mass Effect 2 to come out last November and decided to try and write a “dark second chapter” version of the Galaxy Map music. It turned out decently, but was forgotten amid the other projects I was working on. Then, about a week ago I decided to go back through and listen to a bunch of old projects and this one stood out as promising, so I rewrote it based on my thoughts from playing the actual game - So the idea is that the music is set to a scene of debris floating out in space. Then, the camera pans over to show the breached Normandy drifting through space above a planet, pans over some more to reveal the Collector ship as it surveys the wreckage and takes off… symbolizing the 3 escalating “acts” of the song. Anyway, I had a ton of fun with the sound design and writing the vintage-y synth patches. Hope you all enjoy it! Tyler ------------------------- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lpu5cTk_qvI
  17. This is a Collab, so here's the information for each of us... UserID: 13318 Game: Battletoads & Double Dragon - The Ultimate Team Song: Missle Mayhem System: SNES (for this ReMix) Composer: David Wise Source: Comments (Level 99): Gario is definitely one of the heroes of the workshop forum. He's one of the people who almost constantly gives feedback on each and every WIP he possibly can. He's helped me a lot with mixes that I initially posted in the WIP section. When I was checking for feedback on one of my songs and I saw his request for a guitarist, a little voice in my head said "YOU OWE HIM, GIVE HIM GUITARS". That little voice was surprisingly hard to shut up, so I gave him guitars. I'd never heard the source tune before, and I really didn't need to since Mr. Greg already had guitar parts from the source mapped out. There was a section or two where he said "go nuts", so I did. The guitar tone here is a lot harsher in the mids than my usual approach, and Gario did all the post processing so that almost-cracking overdriven texture is all his work. Side note: this is the second time I've written a solo section and the mixer has moved it out of sync. While I'll probably never be fully used to how it sounds since I know how it was intended to be, it's definitely an interesting result. This ended up being an extremely smooth and rocking collab. I'll work with Gario again, for sure. Comments (Gario): I honestly got to thank Level 99 for saving me on this one - I spent a full week in solitude writing this song with the intention of including a real guitar, but because I didn't really want to mention it to anyone until I was sure I was going to have a remix I didn't contact anyone until I really needed them (well aware of the risk of not finding someone suitable for the job). Level 99 came immediately when I contacted him about it and took it by storm, resulting in the work you see here. With all he's doing for OCR, I was surprised he took it on. Not stopping there, he was not only enthusiastic, but talented and very easy to work with so I'm very thankful for what transpired to make this piece a reality. As for what inspired me to write this in the first place, it was a combination of listening to my younger brother's remix of this very track (which was pretty good, on it's own), listening to Washudoll's mix on the MMX Album project (it's... freakin' incredible) and moving out of New Mexico. It just all clicked at the same time - I wanted to do a rock-orchestra (similar to the MMX track), wanted to do a remix of the source (provided by my brother) and wanted to relieve stress (from the move), and here is the result. I'm quite surprised there aren't more mixes of this game on here. I'm going to vouch for it right now and say everyone should take another look at it - it's a classic from David Wise's prime. Check out the game (and the music), and enjoy our offering to OCR! Post Script: (If this track does not pass through the panel for any reason... although I don't see that happening... I request you allow people to see the link to the track that I provide you in the panel. It's good for the people working on WIP's to listen for themselves as to why submissions are rejected, but it's very difficult to understand your decisions if they can't hear the track themselves. I'm invoking the position you all agreed on so many years ago, so if that's invalid then do what you will. This is not commentary, so don't include it as such, please, lol) --------------------------- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gwd3MEZA4mY
