I am liking the atmospheric opening, and the acoustic and electric interplay is nice, especially when the electric lead goes on some inspired flights of fancy. The background is minimalistic, but still filled out, and the synths are very tasteful. There sounded like some very minor intonation issues when the track crescendos, but it's not a dealbreaker. What makes this a difficult vote is the fact that the piece is really short. Once I get to the point where I expect to hear some melodic interpretation, it ends, which was a little disappointing. as far as structure goes, the song works, but I think adding a little more to it woule be really nice. I'm good with the production aspects, but as for arrangement, a little more would be nice. I think expanding the song length slightly with some inspired expansion would put this way over for me. This is way rocking, but the arrangement is actually sounding pretty conservative to me. The production is very solid, and I love the expansion on the sounds of the original, it definitely feels true to the source. The question is how much arrangement was done. There is a lot of structural changes, and some additional parts and drop outs, and I think the main reason it feels so conservative is the fact that a lot of the sounds just sound like sound upgrades to the original, which in itself is a pretty impressive feat. I do think a more expansive melodic take on the source would make this a stronger pass, where you either add a bridge section, or take the melody to some new places. The sfx from the game are classy and not overused, and it seems like there is something about sonic sfx that really appeals to remixers, because i hear them pretty often. The track in itself is really good, but i'll be real with you and say that the ending straight up sucks and should be redone. The track was really moving until the end, and it just stops. I know you are better than that, dude, you have legit skillz, you gotta use em! It's really close, and no hate on the track, because i think it's sick, but I think for the good of the song, I gotta say No, please resubmit

OCR02287 - *YES* Mario Golf 'Fore on the Floor'
OceansAndrew replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
Not a super ton going on besides the genre conversion after a few listens, but what is done is pretty classy, and there are a lot of nice details that are subtle but effective. I love the sidechained swooshes and the strong use of panning throughout. Production felt very cohesive, and the synths chosen were complimentary. The arrangement is actually more expansive that I initially thought, with soem melodic alterations, stutters and shifts, and a lot of other subtle ideas. The breakdown is pretty good, with a very solid texture and strong transitions to the adjoining sections. It doesn't go completely crazy with the source, but I do think it goes far enough, and is a pretty enjoyable dance track. Yes -
OCR02273 - *YES* Last Ninja 2 'Central Park (Metal Mix)'
OceansAndrew replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
Pretty nice arrangement, and definitely a logical jump from the source material. Nice playing, with some really excellent soloing, and some tasteful use of synths as well. I wish the ending wasn't a fade-out though, as it just sounds sortof cheap compared to the rest of the quality of the track. The synth breakdown was nice, and transitioned well. The song plays it somewhat close to the original, but there are a good deal of minor interpretations, drum writing, and of course the soloing. I really like it, and it's an excellent source. Yes -
I think the rap is pretty good, and the details are good, but I can't hear the source in the backing track at all. Like, not even close. Any other judges able to hear the source? Otherwise, gotta No it.

OCR02248 - *YES* Final Fantasy 8 'Night City Funk'
OceansAndrew replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
This is pretty funky and cool sounding, but for some reason it took me forever to figure out all the source use in this. Not really sure why, but I guess that's the sign of a radically transformed arrangement. I don't feel that the main melody is always super prominent, but It does seem to show up enough for it to be dominant. The intro is a bit on the long side, but the subtle reference to the melody keeps it in somewhat source territory, and the style and production is pretty unique. I'm not totally sold on the fake synth guitar, but I think in context it works ok enough. The epiano breakdown is nice, and overall the flow of the track is pretty good. I wish the lead melody wasn't as washed out, but I think it's good enough considering how punchy the bass and synth are; something's gotta give. Very interesting take on the source, and pretty funky to boot. I approve. Yes -
Nice gated synth. This is a really good expansion of the theme, and seems to be a pretty seamless collab, despite what may or may not have actually happened during it's creation. I love the epic drawn out vocals as well, and the gritty guitar helps give the song extra character. Thanks for the breakdown, it seems pretty accurate. Yes

Really nice work from both of you, this is a really cool way to take the source. I loved the vocals and guitars, and the intro was nice too. Great delivery! -
This is it. It'll be sometime in 2012 when this is released, but it'll be good when it's out.

*NO* Street Fighter Alpha 3 'Ryu's Road'
OceansAndrew replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
The song itself started out a little vanilla, with more of a slight genre shift than anything, but each iteration was personalized and felt unique, and though the counterpoint felt a little weird, the incorporation of ryu's original theme was pretty cool and worked out conceptually. The issue is that the production overall is really unbalanced, with a lot of elements never really gelling together to form a solid base. Between the reverbs, panning, and mixing, nothing seems really solid, and I think adjusting things to have a better foundation would make the track feel better as a whole. Soundwise, the often used synth guitar grates a little, and could use some improved realism. No -

*NO* Resident Evil 2 'I Don't Want to Leave This Safe Room'
OceansAndrew replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
This has a decent expansion to it, but once it adds in the extra synths it kindof dies, momentum-wise. I like a lot of the ideas you've used to expand this, but i think it could go even further. One thing that would really improve this is some more is to humanize the piano; subtle dynamics in the performance would help this feel a lot more interesting, and you could add in some minor swells to give the piece a bit more chance to really breathe. Right now it sounds so static. the synths themselves are pretty well chosen, and there is a pretty good flow, except for the brief drum-only section is a little exposed and doesn't fit the theme of the rest of the track. It could also use a stronger and more defined ending. As-is, it's a little too sudden. Overall this is close, but it feels like the little details are just keeping this from passing. No, please resubmit -
This is really fresh and cool sounding. I love the treatment and ideas here, and literally can't stop listening to this track. Awesome work, I love it. Unfortunately, I gotta agree with the other judges and say that the mix isn't quite there in terms of production. There is a very slight static when things are more exposed, and i think a touch too much reverb on the drums. I think a brief section where the beat hits a half time, and the melody is drawn out a bit would be beautiful, and the song is good enough that it definitely needs a better ending. I mean, everything else is so good, it deserves to go out in style. The mechanical piano could be improved, but it's not enough to hold itself back as is. A few minor revisions and this is going to be really really nice No, please resubmit

Your own comments about the mix, for example the inspiration behind it, how it was made, etc. -after the first disc of the FFV project was released, i contacted Shariq about possibly getting in on the next part of the project. i was very impressed with the overall quality of the disc, and wanted to be a part of it. he replied that he'd keep me in mind if someone had to drop out, and later contacted me to fill in for a remixer who was unable to fulfill their track. after a bit of initial confusion over which track i was doing, i jumped into the track - and about five hours later, i had a rough initial sketch that solidified my position on the project. a few more hours of mastering and adjusting, and this final product was born. i tried to keep the wistful quality of the original, which was largely in part to the sparse texture and beautiful melody of uematsu's work. i attempted to utilize a few synths that were reminiscent of chiptunes - notably the lead in the uptempo section and some of the arpeggiating instruments throughout the track. the overall style is one that i've gravitated towards in recent months, combining elements of ambient and uptempo music to make for a journey of sorts. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4MNvbz5NEw
