My family used to own a goat for lawn control. He was a smelly little black-haired guy who we named Moe -- because he "mowed" the grass. I later decided that Moe was, in fact short for Moseph (a combination of Moses and Joseph, I guess). I liked the name, though, and I've used as an internet name ever since. The wonderful thing about it is that if it's already taken when I try to register it somewhere, I just spell it differently (my preferred alternate spelling is Mozzif).

I used Macs for music and audio editing stuff while I was in school, and I like the OSX interface (especially being able to uninstall stuff by just deleting it). As far a crashes go, I think there may be fewer crashes caused by the OS alone (hard to tell, though), but programs themselves screw up as often as on a Windows machine. Aside from the lack of hardware customization, what I dislike about Macs really stems from the fact that I don't like Apple as a company all that much. The only Apple software besides the OS that I really like is the high-dollar stuff like Final Cut Pro and Logic -- I hate iTunes and iDVD, and for example. Not just dislike them. Hate them. OSX and the bundled software are not in themselves enough to make me spend hundreds of dollars to buy a Mac. The only reason I would buy a new Mac (I own an old iBook) would be for the Mac-only software I like. Meaning Digital Performer and Final Cut Pro, both of which have PC alternatives (SONAR, Avid). Also, I can't stand Apple's trend of updating the OS every year and breaking half of the available third-party programs until they get patches three months later. And it rubs me the wrong way when they (and Mac fans) crow about how Macs are so cool because they can run Windows, too, when the only reason OSX can't run on a PC is because Apple goes to great lengths to make sure it can't, because they want to sell hardware in addition to software.

There had been four F-Zero games by the time Melee was released, including one that had been released earlier that year, and the Ice Climbers had only one game -- and it was an ancient one that few had played. If unlockable status was reserved for the secondaries and the relative unknowns, why then were the Ice Climbers chosen over Falcon to be starting characters?

Yeah. Maybe when they get Brawl straightened out they'll finally be able to help Activision get the d/l content for Wii Guitar Hero working.

Heh . . . I was reading the old posts and thinking "What's wrong with these people -- the beta was MONTHS ago!" Then I saw the post dates. I plan to check it out when I get the time. Does it feel like cripple-ware if you don't pay for any of the micro-transaction stuff, or is all that pretty much non-essential?

You're not connecting it through a USB hub, are you? I have an M-Audio keyboard that does funny things unless I connect it directly to the laptop without going through the hub.

In the sense that they're both DAWs, Live is similar to Cubase, but the work-flow is little bit different. Live is set up to make it easy to run an actual performance with it, so it has some on-the-fly arrangement capabilities. I think Live Lite is limited to four audio tracks, or something like that. Since you've already got it, you may as well install it and try it out.

Those who listen only to mixes from games they've played may be missing out.

The keyboard's actually optional. If Anvil Studio can use VSTs and/or SoundFonts then you've got what you need to get started. If you've never done any music composition/production/arranging/etc before, you're going to be more limited by your lack of experience than by your lack of software.

I haven't used it, but I considered buying an Alesis IO14 when I was looking for an interface. It has four XLR/line inputs, which sounds like about the number you need, and it's cheaper than a Firebox.

I had Mario Kart 64 freeze on me once, I had perpetual trouble with the N64 memory cards, and I've seen battery-saves spontaneously erase themselves before, so even the cartridge systems weren't perfect. But they were pretty darn solid most of the time. I think part of the draw of PC gaming, at least for some, is the whole pimp-my-computer aspect. There's a certain amount of pride involved in being able to run new games at 90fps that goes beyond the mere enjoyment of the game itself.

I use Rockbox (on a Toshiba Gigabeat) and I've been generally satisfied with it. From what I saw of the original Gigabeat firmware, Rockbox is better. I like how it allows you to just move stuff to the player from Windows Explorer without having to bother with going through a media player, and you can also browse on the player in folder view. It supports a bunch of filetypes including ogg vorbis and FLAC. And you can play Doom. Downsides: It's ugly (although you can skin it, which helps), it doesn't support any type of DRM-protected files, and I find playlist management slightly confusing (although I'm not sure if it's actually more confusing than non-Rockbox players -- I may just be inept). I think you need to download a special build to support album art. Also, I'm not sure if the iPod version supports realtime decoding of AAC files, so if that's a big deal to you, you should check on that. I think Apple's official stance may be that Rockbox voids the warranty, but you should be able to reset the iPod to the factory firmware and wipe out all evidence that Rockbox was ever on it if you need to.

I'm pretty sure there is such an update.

If it seems to be happening while you're away from the computer, maybe it's a screen saver issue? Does rebooting fix it, or only a user switch?

SIR1 is freeware, if you need a convolution reverb VST. My alma mater has a really nice performance hall, and I'd love to make a project out of recording impulse responses in it.
