  1. There had been four F-Zero games by the time Melee was released, including one that had been released earlier that year, and the Ice Climbers had only one game -- and it was an ancient one that few had played. If unlockable status was reserved for the secondaries and the relative unknowns, why then were the Ice Climbers chosen over Falcon to be starting characters?
  2. Yeah. Maybe when they get Brawl straightened out they'll finally be able to help Activision get the d/l content for Wii Guitar Hero working.
  3. If you have $20 to spare, some guy's selling what appears to be a CD-ROM version on eBay. EDIT: Of course, it might be the same rerelease GameTap's got . . .
  4. This is nothing. They're just testing the waters for a seventh Star Wars movie with Soul Caliber characters.
  5. You'd be surprised how often this question comes up. Maybe they should put a "to download, right-click and save as" notice on the download page.
  6. Heh . . . I was reading the old posts and thinking "What's wrong with these people -- the beta was MONTHS ago!" Then I saw the post dates. I plan to check it out when I get the time. Does it feel like cripple-ware if you don't pay for any of the micro-transaction stuff, or is all that pretty much non-essential?
  7. You're not connecting it through a USB hub, are you? I have an M-Audio keyboard that does funny things unless I connect it directly to the laptop without going through the hub.
  8. and if you didn't like that one...
  9. I used to know what a German sixth chord was, but I've forgotten now. All that knowledge was ever good for was to pass tests.
  10. In the sense that they're both DAWs, Live is similar to Cubase, but the work-flow is little bit different. Live is set up to make it easy to run an actual performance with it, so it has some on-the-fly arrangement capabilities. I think Live Lite is limited to four audio tracks, or something like that. Since you've already got it, you may as well install it and try it out.
  11. Those who listen only to mixes from games they've played may be missing out.
  12. It's fictional. But if we actually get an update on it, that's what it will be.
  13. 10charlimit
  14. The keyboard's actually optional. If Anvil Studio can use VSTs and/or SoundFonts then you've got what you need to get started. If you've never done any music composition/production/arranging/etc before, you're going to be more limited by your lack of experience than by your lack of software.
  15. I haven't used it, but I considered buying an Alesis IO14 when I was looking for an interface. It has four XLR/line inputs, which sounds like about the number you need, and it's cheaper than a Firebox.
  16. I had Mario Kart 64 freeze on me once, I had perpetual trouble with the N64 memory cards, and I've seen battery-saves spontaneously erase themselves before, so even the cartridge systems weren't perfect. But they were pretty darn solid most of the time. I think part of the draw of PC gaming, at least for some, is the whole pimp-my-computer aspect. There's a certain amount of pride involved in being able to run new games at 90fps that goes beyond the mere enjoyment of the game itself.
  17. I use Rockbox (on a Toshiba Gigabeat) and I've been generally satisfied with it. From what I saw of the original Gigabeat firmware, Rockbox is better. I like how it allows you to just move stuff to the player from Windows Explorer without having to bother with going through a media player, and you can also browse on the player in folder view. It supports a bunch of filetypes including ogg vorbis and FLAC. And you can play Doom. Downsides: It's ugly (although you can skin it, which helps), it doesn't support any type of DRM-protected files, and I find playlist management slightly confusing (although I'm not sure if it's actually more confusing than non-Rockbox players -- I may just be inept). I think you need to download a special build to support album art. Also, I'm not sure if the iPod version supports realtime decoding of AAC files, so if that's a big deal to you, you should check on that. I think Apple's official stance may be that Rockbox voids the warranty, but you should be able to reset the iPod to the factory firmware and wipe out all evidence that Rockbox was ever on it if you need to.
  18. I'm pretty sure there is such an update.
  19. SOLO PIANO: import midi, change everything to piano sound, add arbitrary tempo changes AVANT GARDE: import midi, roll dice to select instrument sounds, transpose each track by x - 1 semitones (where x equals the ID number of the track), delete most notes, play backward STRING QUARTET: import midi, delete all but four tracks, change everything to "string ensemble 1," go crazy with the mod wheel BAROQUE: import midi, change everything to harpsichord sound, add trills on long notes KLEZMER: import midi, change melody to clarinet, change bassline to tuba, add whatever other brass or string instruments make it most obnoxious GREGORIAN CHANT: import midi, delete all but melody, transpose down by ten semitones, use "choir ahh" sound, add lots of reverb
  20. I love how the HiHat is indeed a high hat.
  21. If it seems to be happening while you're away from the computer, maybe it's a screen saver issue? Does rebooting fix it, or only a user switch?
  22. SIR1 is freeware, if you need a convolution reverb VST. My alma mater has a really nice performance hall, and I'd love to make a project out of recording impulse responses in it.
  23. When the Dojo announces Mega Man, it will be a surprise for everyone!
  24. Yeah, generally when you're dealing with speakers of any kind, they're first to get turned off and last to get turned on. I don't think it'll really matter if you're just booting and shutting down a computer, though. When it's really more of an issue is if you're dealing with mic/instrument cable and are physically messing with the connections, because you can unintentionally make some really loud, sharp noises. EDIT: My talk about being able to damage any monitors wasn't intended to make you super-cautious -- rather, it was to point out that any monitors can break if you abuse them, so I don't think you need to be too hung-up about whether or not these particular monitors are possible to break.
  25. He probably mostly just wants to make sure that you won't destroy your monitors through negligence and then try to blame it on him or the store (I imagine that audio stores would tend to have problems with people doing this). I have no experience with RP-5s, but I would think that listening to stuff at normal volume levels isn't going to damage the speakers unless maybe you take an EQ and crank the bass frequencies up 36db or something. The issue is basically that cones of that size just can't produce low frequencies well, so don't try to make them sound like a subwoofer would. If you need the subwoofer sound, buy a subwoofer. Also, keep in mind that it's possible to damage any monitors; it's not an issue that's unique to this particular model. (A general no-no is plugging or unplugging audio cables that are active, because the pops this produces can damage monitors -- mute the related channels first.) Googled the headphone-out issue for you. It looks like using a headphone-out probably wouldn't be a problem. As always, just be careful with your levels and use common sense.
