  1. The synths entered way too abruptly and I can't say I'm a fan of the distorted piano, but the rest of the minimalist soundscape is handled quite nicely, and the non-distorted piano sounds great! Thanks for reminding me how much I love this tune There's lots to love about this, so even if some elements don't jive with you, you might find that the end product is still something highly listenable!
  2. Wow, this is really over-the-top. I'll be honest, some parts of it sounded like they were just trying too hard to be funky, but that doesn't really lessen the enjoyability factor. The electric piano and the organ particularly work well for me... samples hold up to today's standards, and the arrangement is a great take on a classic source. I don't know if this is one of my favorite djp mixes (there are a lot of them!) but it's definitely worth checking out for anyone looking for a downright fun groove!
  3. One of the most mainstream sounding songs I've heard on OCR in terms of the sound, but these aren't really the kind of lyrics you're likely to hear on the radio. This song combined the kind of professional beats you'd hear from a mainstream rap song with the kind of personal, meaningful lyrics you get from underground hip-hop. I really agree that this one feels like an homage/tribute to Eminem's Mockingbird, but the subject matter of the lyrics combined with the familiar IceCap meldoy makes this one unique enough to hold onto Nice work fellas!
  4. How have I never heard this before? Star has proven himself time and time again to be a pure genius, so it almost makes me wonder why I haven't taken the time to listen to his whole remix catalog before. This captures the essence of 80's pop with some appropriate vocal filtering that fits the concept of the song nicely Star is a master of this kind of loud, punchy music that's full of a ton of intricacies that are impossible to fully comprehend on the first listen. For, like, the 2 of you out there that haven't heard this yet, check it out! It's a really fun romp through a nice theme, what more can you ask for?
  5. Um... well, the two parts stand pretty solidly on their own, and the transition from techno to orchestral isn't bad. But really, the fade between genres could have been a LOT more seamless the first time around. The second one was a little bit better doing it gradually, but I still believe this should have just been two separate mixes. Unknown's orchestration is solid and zircon... well, he's improved a lot but even this isn't too bad, but I'll echo everyone else's sentiments that this was more of a mashup and less of a collab.
  6. This progresses nicely, it's a very moving, paced remix that, unfortunately, takes a lot of time to get to the actual source. I can't tell if you're actually remixing DMC music or just taking inspiration from the soundtrack since nothing is listed on the database other than the MGS theme, but as a standalone song I'm not bothered by the long intro. Really impressive use of some lesser-used orchestral instruments such as the choir and organ, it helps to set it apart from all the other orchestral songs on the site that I've kind of grown tired of. The delayed piano sample seems kind of cliched at this point but I won't hold it against this mix. Honestly, I didn't even realize this was a pre-OCR01000 song, the production sounds great even by today's standards. This is the kind of gem I love hearing as I sift through some of the earlier songs on the site! Really fantastic work that holds up completely by today's standards. I'll be keeping this one!
  7. Beautiful, haunting instrumental elements that linger in the air like a haze, it feels like some of the ending songs to Metal Gear Solid that have that downright moody feel to them, but how you interpret the specific mood of the song can vary from person to person. If there is one thing that I think we can all agree on, though, is that this is emotive. You can argue mixing and performance quality as much as you want (I had a few issues with the technical aspects of the mix as well, but I'm not going to get into them since this is an old mix and I know starla has greatly improved her craft since 2002) but you can't deny that the remixer poured her heart out into this one. Give this one a shot; you might find that the age of the song is a little off-putting but I still found it highly enjoyable for all it was worth
  8. Wow, this one's pretty uplifting! I'm honestly not digging this as much as Hale's mix from SoS or his more recent Mario Kart song (you can tell that he's improved his vocal skills in the time since this song was posted) but there's still a lot to love about this. This one reminds me a LOT of Darengan's work that, although it might not be perfectly polished, still has a lot of heart and shows great amounts of talent on the songwriting and performing fronts. Short, sweet, and definitely capturing that summertime feeling... Hale really brought something new to the table
  9. I've been reading over most of the review threads that I've posted in so far, but this is the best comment I've come across so far As for the mix itself, the voice samples are used tastefully to great atmospheric effect, and the rest of the mix is equally worthy of such profound soundclips. The samples are a bit dated but you can still get an appreciation for the kind of mood Mazedude was going for. The strings that come in around 1:40 really clicked, that was wonderful. I really like this, it's one of the few instances where the vocal clips aren't a nuisance and instead actually contribute something to the overall meaning of the song.
  10. This one takes its sweet time building up, and there's a few off-notes in the first half, but once things get going with the rhythm guitar past 3:00, this mix really kicks it up a notch in terms of quality and emotion. I love how the guitar solo fit perfectly with the uplifting mood created by the orchestral music... I was on the fence about whether I was gonna download this and keep it on my playlist, but once I hit that moment my decision was made. That's awesome, this just goes to show that stepping out of your comfort zone without losing sight of your style can pay off in spades! Also, the mix title here is brilliant, it seems to fit so perfectly with the music I'm hearing. Killer work on all fronts!
  11. The beats are really good when they get going, I'll give this mix that! The non-electronic instruments start off feeling really rough but they get better. It actually grew on me as I listened to it more and the song gained a bit more depth, though the articulation on the bells and piano still feels really robotic. Not a bad song by any means, though it feels like it needs a bit of polishing around the edges to make it really stand out.
  12. So, it should go without saying that this is one of the best mixes to hit the front page in ages. I really mean it, this is bLiNd's greatest remix and it perfectly showcases all of the skills he's demonstrated in his past mixes, as well as a new trick I didn't know he had (incorporating vocals!) I love the transitions where the drums and synths hit that wall-of-sound mode, and then when they level off with a steady beat... those moments make the mix! Also, this has been said a million times already but I'll echo the sentiment that the vocals are surprisingly beautiful, your friend has some real talent The breathy, barely-comprehensible lyrics work perfectly with this kind of music. Thank you for sharing this with the world, this is really a moving, touching piece that warms my heart on so many levels I'll be listening to this one for a long time to come!
  13. This is absolutely lovely, I remember how elated I was when I first listened to this... it's so bubbly, it picks you up and transports you to somewhere happier for 4 and a half minutes and then drops you back down... ultimately I'm just left wanting to loop this one so I can experience that all the time I don't usually gush like this in reviews, but this one feels a lot more about the emotion created by the sounds rather than the technical aspects of the arrangement, so I wanted to comment more on how it made me feel from a subjective standpoint. This mix is beautiful and I don't think I would be acknowledging the scope of its greatness with an objective review. Soooo good, you guys. Make more like this!
  14. Really exquisite piano playing going on, but that's nothing short of what I've come to expect from Dhsu. The mood is fitting for the castle theme and overall I like what's been done to make the original sound even creepier. The real highlight for me, though, was the organ that came in later in the mix - I was NOT expecting that! You don't hear that often in remixes, but it COMPLETELY works here! Also, I'm pretty astonished at the seamless transition between themes, I honestly didn't even notice that you ever deviated from Super Mario World. Brilliant work, this comes highly recommended for anyone looking for something downright creepy!
  15. I don't think the mix title could feel anymore appropriate. The strings mixed with the perfect piano sound feels perfectly suited for a dance in the moonlight Beautiful piano, and expertly chosen additional instruments only highlight and accentuate the mood. One of my favorite Wingless peices (and trust me, I love just about every one of them, so that's a high honor!) It's just plain beautiful, I can never grow tired of it
  16. This is the kind of remix I love to hear when I'm sifting through pre-OCR01000 mixes Creative, utterly emotive, and the samples, while not perfect, are hardly enough to deter me from listening to the song over and over again. Guitar tone is perfect for the dark, forlorn mood. One of the best classic songs on the site, and I think its popularity will continue for a long time to come.
  17. Your birthday is so cool dude, I wish mine was awesome enough to be on December 15th :-(

  18. I pretty much whore out OCR to everyone I know who might even be remotely interested in it. I've got 2 friends to register forum accounts (and between the two they've got a grand total of one post ) and I'm pretty sure I've converted a few listeners. Apparently on my forum account it says I have one referral, sooo...
  19. Really sick beats you've got going on here, it makes the sax sound so much better when there's some sort of padding for it to sit on, as opposed to the solo version which sounded pretty weird to me. 42's comment about the "haziness" of the soundscape is dead-on, everything feels like it's floating around in the air for a few seconds after the initial notes hit like a cloud of smoke... Really ambient, really engrossing. Wonderful collab guys!
  20. Just hit 100! Halfway there! (For my own reference, Confronto Finale was my 100th review.) (just counted again, 167th review was Hy bound's "somewhere to hide. will remove when this reference marker is no longer relevant.)
  21. This one definitely feels appropriate given the source tune. For something that was churned out as fast as you guys make it sound, I think the finished product is pretty astounding! Nice original lyrics, quality vocals from and a downright-haunting instrumental track... this was a perfect lead-in to the epic finale on Echoes. Nice work you two!
  22. I haven't really listened to this much just because it doesn't really fit with the flow of Thieves of Fate, but as a standalone track it's quite nice. Definitely has that boss music feel to it. Sorry this one's been so underreviewed, I think it deserves better than that!
  23. The novelty factor of this mix is quite high, considering it's one of the few composer-submitted remixes, but even the Fat Man's admitted it's not as good as it could have been, and I'm inclined to agree. The groove that is here is pretty high quality and enjoyable, but it falls flat as a full-blown song. No offense meant to the remixer though, who obviously has more street cred than just about anyone on this site This one just doesn't do it for me.
  24. The incredibly strong beats and glitching effects of varying degrees of subtlety really craft an enjoyable piece of music. The distorted piano works well, though some of the skipped notes felt a little awkward. The pulsating noise at the end was a really cool touch, but I wish it was a bit shorter or incorporated while the rest of the song was still breaking down - having that many seconds of almost-silence puts a definite gap in the album that I'm not really a fan of Overall, though, it's a definite highlight off of the Gears disc, it really captures the essence of dark electronic music
  25. You should really send this to The Damned and see if he'll let you finish it up for the Pokemon remix project. It's good However, the whole song feels very rigid, especially the piano, which could definitely use some humanization. Other than that, I think you're pretty good - the samples are great, the arrangement is great... just work on making it feel more like a human played it and you'll probably be set!
