This is the kind of stuff I've been digging lately and it's nice to hear it done well. Getting a Daft Punk Tron vibe for sure on the intro. Source connection is clear, but used in a creative manner. Larry's right that the backing sequence does tend to get relegated to more of a backing foundation part, but the lead holds down the main theme in the foreground. Transition at 1:29 felt awkward - could've been smoother for sure, but it's not a track killer. Production is really fantastic here though. Loving the full, wide bass line. Really good changeups in synths and patterns to keep individual sections from getting too repetative. I do hear Larry's point about textures mostly staying the same throughout the track. Definitely a good thing to keep in mind for future projects to keep things engaging throughout. I guess on an objective level we both agree on production & arrangement being over the bar, but personal preference-wise, I'm not getting bored here. YES

[Wanted] Sound Designer for iOS Game
Nutritious replied to Appocalypse's topic in Recruit & Collaborate!
I also started working on my submission last night. By the way, I didn't see it mentioned above, but what kind of deal/agreement are you offering to whomever is selected? I'm sure anyone considering trying out for this would be interested to know. -
First half is a pretty straightforward treatment of Schala, so I'm hoping to hear things mix up a bit more soon. In general, while the soundscape is filled out pretty well, the writing still comes off as sparse. The sudden synth drop out at 1:48 & 2:24 came off as a bit awkward. The Kick playing throughout the first half felt too subby, without much presence at all in the mid range. Things pick up a bit at 2:38 and definitely bring up the interest level. It's definitely a step in the right direction and a much stronger section in general. Kick here didn't seem to quite match what the rest of the kit was doing, both rhythm wise and tone wise. The kick pattern clashes a bit with the snare/hat patterns. Also, you may want to try a more acoustic sounding kick to match the rest of the drum parts. I hear why Larry's questioning the purpose of the atonal parts in the end section. It seems like 4:13 - 4:37 would be more effective as a breakdown section somewhere in the middle, rather than a resolution, but that's really just my opinion. So overall, really good start here! I'd recommend focusing a lot on developing the arrangement and instrumentation further, especially in first half. Keep on eye on your instrument transitions so things progress more smoothly. NOResubmit, please

OCRA-0040 - Final Fantasy VI: Balance and Ruin
Nutritious replied to zircon's topic in Album Reviews & Comments
Gonna second Rexy as I too have noticed the sharp dropoff in Review feedback on the site over the past few years. This^ is basically the conclusion I came to when I was reading the last couple pages on the thread earlier. It seems like the listening base in general has gradually shifted from being participators to simply consumers. That desire to become part of something, even in a little way like registering on the forums and posting in an album review thread, doesn't seem to exist for many of these folks anymore. Maybe it's the way the Internet has evolved over the past few years - that social media interaction is the norm with sites like Twitter and Facebook, rather than just the purview of niche community sites like OCR. However! Lest I become part of the problem as well as take this further off topic, I'll leave my initial album feedback here: I have to confess that I've only made it through the first two discs so far (terrible, I know, but that's life right now), but I have to say I'm floored by everything I'm hearing. Everyone involved has really stepped up their game here, which is a great testament to the committment of the artist community. Even though I have a track on the album and collaborated on another, given the scope of what's involved, it feels like a drop in the bucket compared to what's been accomplished here. So, congrats to Mike and Andy: you guys have really set the bar high for those of us directing the next few albums! -

*NO* Chrono Trigger 'Corridors of Time (Ujifusa Mix)'
Nutritious replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
First of all, very cool writing. You're covering much-tread ground here, but doing so in fresh way. Unfortunately, I don't have much to add to Vig & Larry's excellent votes. I'll echo focusing on the drums. Also, with regards to getting some more high end on the instrumentation, just make sure not to overdo it to kill the vibes you've established here. Sidenote: there's some extra silence that could be cut from the end of the track for a resub. NO resubmit, please -
*NO* Super Mario 64 & Jazz Jackrabbit 2 'Medieval Koopa Jam'
Nutritious replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
I can hear both sides of the vote swings here. Drums could definitely use some variation from the core pattern here. Really didn't see a significant change (beyond dropping/adding elements) until 2:56 and that was pretty short-lived before it came back to the regular pattern. I actually liked the idea of the slowed down section at 3:45, I just think the execution was lacking. Instead of just slowing down the existing elements, try breaking down to a half-time groove and get some nice bass work going and it'll rock hard. Synths overall are cool and had some neat writing to close things out at the end. Arrangement is great. Good usage of both themes and working them in together. Funny, part of this reminds me of some Unreal Tournament music, which makes sense given the composer. What you've got here is good, and I think falls in the borderline category, but there's also a ton of potential in the track as well from a production perspective. NO Resubmit, please -
OCR02714 - *YES* Secret of Mana 'Curious' *FALLTHROUGH*
Nutritious replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
First I have to say, it was a pleasure getting to meet up and hang out with Kevin at the Reno Game Expo this past weekend. For those who don't know, he is one of the directors for the Reno Game Symphony and was the man behind the Expo. The guy is a class act and did everything he could to make it a positive and fun experience for everyone. This also gave me the opportunity to hear a live take on this theme by Kevin's group the Tomo Club. This source tune is one of my favorites from Secret of Mana, so it was a real treat. Speaking of this mix, it's not the same as the one I hear live, but I'm really digging the arrangement approach on this one. Loving the performances as well as the overal vibe here. Sound is very clean and production is solid (I'm only hearing the remaster, not the original). Nice work. Hoping to hear more from you in the future. YES -
Well, a long time ago I posted a free template I created when I was doing orchestral mixes with free sounds/samples. It's yonder if you're curious. Wow, can't believe I first posted that over 5 years ago now. My current template is a bit more organized, with 4 instances of EWQLSO grouped by sections on the mixer: Strings, Brass, Woodwinds, Percussion. I've saved each of the 4 groups of multi's in EWQLSO for quick loading on other projects or in case I accidentally delete something. For example, the Strings Multi has 4 legato patches and 4 staccato patches for violins, violas, cellos, & basses.

OCR02750 - *YES* Kirby 64 'Tough It Out!'
Nutritious replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Great energy from this track, guys. This style feels like classic OCR to me - in a good way for sure. In this style, it's easy to fall into the trap of repetativeness, but you do a good job mixing things up throughout to keep it interesting. Good idea transitioning to half time at 2:08 to break things up a bit. Nice performance on the guitar lead. Would've like to hear it more prominently featured in the soundscape, but it works here. Nice work guys, solid mix. YES -

Yup, Vig & Larry hit literally everything I wanted to say here. I'll just add that there's a LOT of good potential here. Keep at it, you're not far away. NO resub, please -
Personally, I just get a decent voice recorder app and hum any music ideas into the phone for later. Sure, I look like an idiot, but it's the price we pay

OCR02816 - *YES* Dark Cloud 2 'Fishing Spirit'
Nutritious replied to Palpable's topic in Judges Decisions
I was a bit worried on the string opening on how the production would fare, but my fears were soon allayed. Nice samples and balancing between parts. Loved the woodwind flourish at 2:30 - very nice touch. Melodically, there isn't a ton changed from the original, however, things are fleshed out and expanded in supporting parts significantly. Gotta agree with Vinnie on the key change. Not to say it doesn't fit, but the transition could definitely have been more effective. Overall, really liking what I'm hearing here and having a little orchestral sample envy . Solid stuff. YES -
Alright, today's deadline day, so you better get your - wait a sec *checks inbox* - right! Carry on. (Pirahna Plant complete!)

Hey everyone. Just bumping this thread to let you guys know that OCR is going to be hosting a panel at this expo. So, if you're on the west coast or anywhere nearby, join us for some good times! -
For reference, in the current (likely near-final) track order, they're not concurrent tracks. Heck, they're not even on the same disc.
