Super Mario RPG: Window to the Stars - History
Theory of N replied to Theory of N's topic in Projects
I thought about it but 1) There aren't really established regional differences in the music from the game so the genres that would be set would be basically pulled out of my ass. 2) With a project this big I feel that restricting genre would not only stifle artists but it would also make completing the project much more difficult. -

Yessir. PM me with a wip and we'll talk. -
SUPER MARIO RPG WINDOW TO THE STARS RELEASE DATE TBD UPDATE 9/7/2016: We're in the final stretch! Music is 98% complete and undergoing site evaluation, art's looking killer, and DaMonz and I are doing all we can to get this thing out as soon as possible. While you wait, why not check out a few clips from some of the tracks? UPDATE 10/29/2015: Final deadline has passed and Emery and I feel that a little extra time to make this project wonderful will go a long way. We've got quite a few completed tracks in but there's still a bit of work to be done so for the last time, we're pushing the final final deadline back to February 16, 2016. We've got the album cover art done as you can see at the top there, done by the wonderful Kristoffer Soucy. We'll also be trying to put together a teaser trailer so you guys can get a sample of what to expect in the near future. This album is becoming a reality and it's looking REALLY good UPDATE 5/18/2015: School's out and my PC's bumpin' so it's time to get back to work. Thanks so much to DaMonz for picking up the slack while I couldn't devote time to this project. He should already be in touch with everyone and I'll be doing the same to make sure everyone knows THIS PROJECT IS DEFINITELY HAPPENING. UPDATE 2/19/2014: Due to a large amount of drops, we weren't able to meet the original deadline. Current focus is on heavy recruitment and filling those slots. Thanks to all of you that still tried to meet the deadline. Most of you are ALMOST finished with your tracks so please finish those up asap! In other news, we have a kickass artist for our album art and I've recruited a few artists from outside of our OCR walls. Always cool to have fresh blood! UPDATE 10/20/2013: Awesome wips coming in. The project has a name, finally! We're calling it Super Mario RPG: Don't You Dig These Vibes? There are quite a few people I haven't heard from and a couple who have had to drop so there are plenty tracks available. Any that are unclaimed or "Conditional" on the tracklist are up for grabs with a wip. About the album After 7 years of waiting for my favorite game of all time to have an OCR album, I decided to take matters into my own hands and start one. This tribute to Yoko Shimomura's incredible soundtrack is planned to have 33 tracks on 3 discs, titled Exploration, Confrontation, and Celebration. Personnel Director: Theory of N Assistant Director: DaMonz Tracklist/Remixers (doc no longer public)

Had a blast, dude! Looking forward to next time ;D To anyone who has not yet heard this music, do yourself a favor and get it. It's very difficult to regret buying buttdog-awesome music.

First thing, your bass/kick is too loud and crushes everything. Your remix actually sounds pretty neat aside from that. I'd like to hear everything a bit clearer once the bass is cleaned up. For now though, I think there could be a bit more done to distinguish between the sections you have. There's the A section from 0:10 - 0:40 and then the B section from 0:40 - 1:00. The transition could be a bit smoother for one thing. Maybe ease into the key change. The best way I can hear to do this with what you have involves the three notes in the lead before it. Instead of moving downward on the last note, move upward instead to give more tension as opposed to it kind of returning to where it was before. Some extra subtle layers in the B section would help it to feel more exciting too.

wip Pokemon GSC - Burned Tower
Theory of N replied to jordanrooben's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Firstly, I'm going to mirror timaeus on everything he said. The kick, shrill lead at 2:22, etc. After hearing this again and listening to more than just sounds, source usage is a huge problem. You're varying your sounds enough but the entire mix is just the same 4-measure phrase being repeated for 3 minutes. When that shrill lead comes in at 2:22, you vary up the rhythm and that's a good start but it doesn't do too much to make it interesting when everything else is still same-y. I'm not really a fan of the "wobble bass". Mostly because it doesn't wobble. It's not very interesting and it kind of sounds like a lawnmower as opposed to a refined synth. I think in order for it to work, it needs to be tweaked quite a bit or a different wobble bass needs to be used entirely. -
wip SMW2: Yoshi's Island - Flower Garden Remix
Theory of N replied to Nostalvania's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Luckily, you just happen to be in the midst of a whole bunch of really talented musicians. If you're interested in live instruments, start up a recruitment thread and people will respond. We like playing our instruments If you don't necessarily want to go that route you'll likely have to do what Skryp's talking about. Aside from the one middle section and the fact that it's all mostly the same 16 bars, contrast would REALLY help this mix. Dynamic variation, meter change, key change, drastic timbral differences (you don't really get much of that with the organ and flute)...all of these things would do the trick. Clever, you -

I'm loving the groove you've got going. Nice basswork and accompaniment. I think the organ you use for the lead would benefit from being in a higher octave. At the moment, it's kind of fighting with the accompaniment keys. You do a really good job of varying up the source enough to keep it interesting most of the time but I think it still kind of suffers from going on with the same 16 bar progression over and over again for so long. Like at 2:15, you've got the right idea; that's a nice change and would make a good segue into a new section but it just goes right back into the same thing you just came from. Same segue the next time around so it sounds like those 16 bars are just unnecessary. The slower middle section doesn't sound too bad but I think the transition into it is too abrupt. I think my biggest beef with this is how artificial it sounds. Live instrumentation would not only make it sound better, it would help with the ear fatigue that comes from the same 16 bar progression being repeated. Get some live instruments in here and you've got yourself a killer remix. -
wip Pokemon GSC - Burned Tower
Theory of N replied to jordanrooben's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
My first thought when the bass came in was that it was in the wrong key. But then the rest came in and I realized that intro was...strange. It's in a different key or mode or something and doesn't work well. Yeah, I'd definitely tone the kick back quite a bit. It can still be a driving force without being so in-your-face. That rough saw could use some refining. Even more so at 1:53 when it goes half-time. It's not tight enough and interferes with the other sounds going on. That whole half-time section actually sounds like it's missing something. I don't know if it's maybe something in the drums that feels empty or the fact that it's all low-end. I'll be keeping an eye out for the next update -
wip The Strongest! (Street Fighter Alpha 2 Sakura/Dan theme)
Theory of N replied to thatandyguy's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Right off the bat, this shit's groovy as hell. I'm loving it. Until the beat starts dropping out randomly. That can be a pretty neat technique but it doesn't seem to be employed very well here and used a bit much. After listening through it, I think the leads could be a bit more interesting. Especially the one that plays Dan's theme. A little pitch modulation goes a long way. This track REALLY reminds me of jm and po's Dan's Ice Cream Truck. It's got that groove. It just needs the lead style to match. -
finished F-Zero - Mute City (Mellow Sonic Remix)
Theory of N replied to mellowsonic's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Sounds pretty sick for the most part. The drums really get to me though. I think it may be the fact that all of the snare hits up to about 2:50 are on offbeats and the beat doesn't really sit that well with me. I like the feel you've got going on in the beginning but I think it takes way too long to get into the main melody of the song. It's neat to listen to but it kind of loses interest after a little bit...wait... I just realized the beat you've got going in the end is practically the same as the one from the beginning. Was I hearing it an eighth beat ahead...? *goes back to listen* ...yep, I was. Disregard the initial comment about the drums. Overall, it's pretty nice. I don't think it would pass by OCR standards for the lack of source usage alone unless I'm missing something. I'm basing that on my memory of the source tune. I don't recognize anything outside of the main melody that comes in. I've gotta run for now but that's what I've got at the moment. Keep it up, dude! -

FL Studio Remix Gauntlet -- Round 8 starts now, Round 6 results
Theory of N replied to Jason Covenant's topic in Competitions
I'm in the same boat here. Maybe not quite to the same extent as PH (Dude's in full beast-mode) but I'm not as available as I was when the rest of the compo was taking place. I've got to apologize to Mr. Nuts and Mr. Panther for being a total flop in this thing. The timing in which everything happened was just really, really bad. Though I'll still be around for input and such if you guys need it. I just can't dedicate myself to being primary remixer. -

I was just reminded of this. I got the Super Suit in Super Mario RPG. You know...the 100 Super Jumps in a row? That shit's worse than lightning dodging in FFX. -
Milky Way Wishes: A Kirby Super Star Tribute - History
Theory of N replied to Arek the Absolute's topic in Projects
Actually, now that I think about it...didn't a similar thing happen with Joe Cam's Animal Crossing project? I remember him posting all the music without an official release but I don't remember a backlash happening like this. -

I don't know exactly what would need to be done but I'd be willing to take on some extra work and responsibility to push this thing through if it comes to that. -

If you're looking to write music, you can translate musical elements from any genre into inspiration for another. I listen to orchestral music frequently for inspiration into my electronic stuff. You won't find better examples of musicality than in the works of Gershwin, Debussy, Ravel, Brahms... the list goes on. Saying you can't draw inspiration from orchestral music because you don't write orchestral music is like saying you can't draw inspiration from jazz because you only write ska. If that's the case, then you're listening to the wrong parts of music. There's more to music than just genres and instrumentation.

Man, people like giving away free Pokemon. So far, I've got a Skarmory, Meowth, Slowpoke, Rhyhorn, and a Dratini from people who had like 5 extra for whatever reason. Also, I just made the OCReMix team last night. Whisper me in game for an invite and stuff.
