I looked around a bit and realize that OCR doesn't have a wiki, now I don't know the first thing about how to start or run a wiki, but I do know that if one did get started I would probably find the time to contribute a good amount of material to it, nothing fancy, just descriptions of what midi really is and maybe a page about DAWs or simple synthesis or something. A wiki like that would really help cut down on the amount of clueless beginners we have walking in here, plus it would be a good place to keep track of lists of DAWs with links to demos and such, also with links to soundfont pages and all sorts of other usefull stuff. Really just a pipe dream... but I think it would be cool and a lot of sites are doing it these days. On second thought this probably should have gone somewhere else, but it's too late now...

This thread seems to be having the trouble that a lot of people want stuff, and there's a lot of people selling stuff, but the people don't want what the people are selling. That's Zephyr, just stating the obvious.

Me too, not that it justifies it, but we get so many inexperienced people around here sometimes we just need to vent on one. I'm done being rude and I'd like to help now.

As for a VSTi Soundfont player (if you know how to use VST's that is, they're the basic format for plugin instruments, they work with most DAW's ) everyone else usually recommends sfz, but I've run into a lot of problems with sfz personnally, I've been using Soundfonter up till I got the Fruity soundfont player, check it out if you want to try some soundfonts, unless you've already found a player. http://www.sanusart.com/SoundFonter_VSTi.zip

I wish you luck with these sir, I tried looking for the first 2 monkey islands at one point, but I couldn't find them for sale anywhere. I eventually self-declared them abandon-ware and "acquired" then otherwise. You can find a photocopy of the Wheel of Mojo online somewhere. Good Luck.

Wow, please don't rant about things you are confused/don't know about. It just makes everyone look bad. He never once suggests that those are free programs, you can't expect to get really good stuff for cheap-as-free either, there are a few demos out there to help you decide, but ultimately if you want to do anything decent you just might have to dish out some cash, if you''lll only be using it "occasionally" then you obviously aren't that serious about this. Change instruments when working with WAV? What are you talking about? WAV's are audio files. Also just because you don't know how to do something or haven't bothered to look it up in the manual or online doesn't mean something's impossible. You made this topic in the Help & Newbies section remember? Okay, you just said yourself that it's a BEGINNER tutorial for BEGINNER mixers, then you continue on to wonder why you couldn't get something into OCR. It takes a little more experience than "Beginner" to get a mix up, trust me. If you're expecting to get one up in your first or second mix, take a reality check. And is it that big of a deal to get it on OCR if you're not really serious about this (or so I gathered by not wanting to spend even $30) and might not even ever make a mix again? I don't recall him calling you anything of the sort, he did however make a very valid point about how most people who don't know what they're doing tend to just ask the "gurus" about everything even if it could be very simply looked up. And you might try actually listening to the people who have accomplished what you are only hoping to achieve. Observe how correct he really was: Even if that isn't an outright question, perhaps you should have taken his advice and just LOOKED THEM UP! /rant

Looking for a DAW with easy MIDI or notation input
Zephyr replied to Drack's topic in Music Composition & Production
All that the step sequencer is really for these days is for the people who haven't started with things complex enough to use the piano roll, and for simple drum loops using only a few samples. As for working with midi, I can't think of a way to do it better than FL does right now. Try that one out a little more in depth. -
After I got 2 posts in and no-one had told him the brutal truth I was starting to get worried. Composing/Arranging midi's is a good place to start, but it'll never get you on OCR. Learn about DAW's and such, it'll serve you well. After you learn to use a DAW start entering some competitions too, they'll help you improve.

Real-time looping in a performance context
Zephyr replied to The Pezman's topic in Music Composition & Production
A really horrible way to do it would be to run the audio through a delay with the time set to the tempo you want and a feedback of 100%. Seriously, it's a horrible idea, don't try it. -
Hey everyone, I picked up ninjam recently and I figure it would be fun to have an OCR jam night every once in a while, we'd pick a server and meet there at some time on some night, maybe twice a month. Post if you're interested. http://www.ninjam.com/

CMC - Conceptual Music Competition 23: Aqueous Nocturne
Zephyr replied to Abadoss's topic in Competitions
Wait, what? How does that work? Show an example please, I'm not sure I get it. Is it for individuals or for stock odds of winning? Does it integrate the amount of points they've gotten? -
OCR TF2: New Server forthcoming - new server IPs and other stuff

I've been thinking about an engie update... I have an idea for a dispenser, it wouldn't dispense any health at all, but would automatically repair buildings that are nearby. It wouldn't generate its own metal, you have to come and put metal into it with your wrench. Dispensing ammo to people wouldn't take away any of the metal though. It can't upgrade or unsap the buildings either. This would somewhat encourage engies to leave their stuff every once in a while, especially if they're being damaged. It would help reduce tanking a lot too because they'd need to go get more metal from time to time and they aren't constantly healing. It would be a good for the engies too because they could stockpile metal there for use later when there's no fighting around their yet. If destroyed, it would leave 75% of the metal on the ground. Also, to replace the pistol (saw this one on the steam forums) you'd get a magnet, it could suck weapons laying on the ground to you for metal, not ammo boxes though. -
FL is resampling my samples to the wrong tempo
Zephyr replied to Zephyr's topic in Music Composition & Production
Nope, edison is just messing with stuff. -
Or just right click on the green box next to the notes on that screen and choose replace.

I'm not entirely certain as I've never used most of these... (correct me if I'm wrong) but I believe that cubase and logic* use a lot of audio, and live kind of uses both, (I think it uses midi to record the audio that is mainly used). Look into it a little bit, but I love the Midi environment of FL Studio personally. There are demos available for some DAWs, at least try FL Studio and reason. *Logic is mac only I believe.

Midis basically are a series of note data contained in one file. It can be played through most soundcards (which often have the midi intstruments on them) but are mainly used within other audio programs for other purposes. They operate on a basis of channels and ports. Different channels often represent different instruments. When used inside a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) such as FL Studio, they can tell the instruments what to play. For example, you could place a midi file into the piano roll of an FL Keys channel and it will tell FL Keys to play those notes, at those times, at those volume levels. Most DAWs work mainly with midi, some work mainly with audio, and some do both quite well. FL Studio is mainly midi, but still has some capability for audio. When using a midi based DAW and playing back a project within the DAW all of the sound is being formed by the instruments in real-time, whereas in an audio based DAW the audio has already been recorded and other than post-recording effects there's really not much that can be changed in it. As for how to use midis in FL Studio, simply go File>Import>Midi file and choose the midi, after it imports you'll see all of the midi data pop up on different channels. You can replace the midi outs with instruments to create sounds or if you'd like you can make FL Studio like a soundcard and place an effect called "Fruity LSD" in one of the mixer inserts (you may need to make sure that the ports line up to get sound). Sorry to continue on for so long, but in case you were wondering about midi keyboard controllers, they simply send these midi messages to the computer like a midi file would, it sends velocity (volume) note (which key was pressed) and timing (when it was pressed) data to the DAW to be recorded, or to be processed in some other way. Sorry if that was confusing, ask some more questions if you like. Learning to use midi is vital to using FL Studio, luckily FL Studio has a great piano roll system for working with midi. Good luck!

OCR TF2: New Server forthcoming - new server IPs and other stuff
Zephyr replied to Bahamut's topic in General Discussion
Maybe I'll stick with TF2... if we just had some people in the server! I expect to some of you to be in there tonight. See you then. I guess the TF2 blog got updated on Oct. 16, those people must be very strange, that's all I can say... http://www.teamfortress.com/ Edit: Had some great rounds tonight, ^ This pic made my night, powerlord is the one off to the right. Thank you, Thank you powerlord. -

I'd heard the ship is decent, but I think I'd probably want to play it before buying it, even at this price. Let me know what you think. -
Hrmm... I don't think we have the community to run an entire site based just on trading and selling a few things... however the tax sounds like an interesting idea.
-
After importing it like J64 said just right click on the midi out channel you want to change and choose "replace" then pick whatever you want there instead. Alternatively just drag something from the browser over top of the channel. Good luck.

Rendered audio always lower volume than in project.
Zephyr replied to Smenelian's topic in Music Composition & Production
Not sure about the FX not being used, make sure that the little FX icon at the bottom of the mixer track is lit up and that none of the FX are disabled or aren't "mixed" in. One other thing to watch for, I've done it once by accident was tweaking things as I listened to the song without realizing I was recording, this messed with all sorts of stuff. Also, generally as a rule I think FL boosts the actual sound a little when listening in a project, I recently exported a song and it was a few db quieter in the mp3. I guess just try and max out your loudness with FL Limiter. Good luck. -

Aww... not a fun update.... oh well it'll be coming eventually. -
Hey everyone, I'm looking for some free drum samples and kits, while drum soundfonts are nice, I'd prefer some good samples, I was looking through some directwave presets and I really liked the lofi kits, I'm just looking for some varied samples to expand my library. I searched for previous topics like this, but most were either not free, were soundfonts, or the sites were down. Anyone have any good drum samples? I like the industrial/lofi stuff.

FL is resampling my samples to the wrong tempo
Zephyr replied to Zephyr's topic in Music Composition & Production
It only happens to samples recorded in that one instance of edison, and it does it no matter what settings I punch in, so that can't be it. Thanks anyways, anyone else have a possibility?
