Megaman 2 - Flashman (Pendulum inspired)
Eino Keskitalo replied to zircon's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Excellent orchestral intro and a lovely transition to the electronics. The first snare sounds a bit out of place.. but I can't quite pinpoint what's "wrong" with it. It sounds a bit too "thick". Don't know if that helps. Otherwise, very enjoyable and effortless sounding. --Eino -
Luigi's Mansion (I hope this isn't too God-awful.....)
Eino Keskitalo replied to Hausdog's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Quirky arrangement! It's well thought out, whole and complete. I like! Keep working on the production side of things - we'll all be rewarded with some good tracks I think! --Eino -
Whoa... first off, the guitar/keyboards/whatisit?! in the choruses sound AMAZING. An incredible wall of sound. I like it. You make a good question about the bass. Having the bass stay in one place while the chords change is an effect I really like. But you don't have to do that all the time, you could do that for half a chorus, or do it in one of the choruses in the song.. experiement! About the bass as it is now, I think the fill sounds better as "A-E-F-G-A" than the "A-E-F#-G-A" you have now. I guess the bass is in major key and it should be in minor key. Or something, I know next to nothing about theory. --Eino

..pass me some more of that octotonic shit.. Ahh, what a fine, thick piece of madness. I definitely like. The main lead sound is thankfully not omnipresent, it's a bit tiring to listen to constantly, but there are breaks from it and anyway, what is played is some wicked stuff indeed. And I don't mean that it's bad in itself. Maybe a bit more guitar tone variation could have been there, but not a major complaint. I can see what the drum complaints are about.. I like most of it, but especially the first part below that big guitar solo it's both too simple and too loud. Some quick but fairly quiet hihat runs for instance would have been better than frequency-hogging constant cymbal bashing, in my opinion. The second part is actually a bit like what I'm talking about, but less subtle. I do kinda love that bashing cymbal sound, but at the same time it's one of the sounds that gives it a bit mechanical feel - it sounds the same all the time. Some (volume, ...) variation there could have been good. But hey, that's a lot of nitpicking since overall I thoroughly enjoy this arrangement, and also the sound! It's evil and thick and yet not overbearing. --Eino

OCR01493 - Zombies Ate My Neighbors "The Curse"
Eino Keskitalo replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Wonderfully rough and dirty.. Don't like that loud wah-wah guitar line, but otherwise it holds together well. Versatile sounds! I definitely enjoy the roughness of the guitars blended with the organs. Most of the time the "band" sounds sound more like a garage band than a home studio effort, which is good. --Eino -
OCR01454 - Baldur's Gate "Child of the Murder God"
Eino Keskitalo replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Heh, it's funny how the beginning could lead into Chrono Trigger's 600AD theme quite easily.. Anyway.. impressive, evocative! I'm totally unfamiliar with the original, yet I'm sure this one does it great justice. I'm not a big fan of piano arrangements, but this is a track that might just open that door for me and show me how to appreciate solo piano some more. --Eino -
OCR00470 - Mega Man 2 "Quick Draw"
Eino Keskitalo replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Very solid take on the Quick Man theme. The main lead could have used some more fire, and the unintelligblity of the vocal sample does bother me a bit, but the tightness of the rhythmical work makes up for all that. And those giant lasers! --Eino -
OCR00518 - Final Fantasy "Something Final"
Eino Keskitalo replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I like the sounds, and the general feel of this mix, but don't think the transitions in the middle are good enough.. I wish this segued better. The sound is amazing and works great with the source material. Very uniquely, in fact. I'll be keeping this, although I feel it's seriously flawed by that middle part. Or maybe it'll grow on me, we'll see! --Eino -
OCR01543 - Parasite Eve "PMS"

Ahh, I love that bass. Slithery, bouncy, nicely distorted. Don't like those choppy solo strings. You can hear the volume drop out as if into vacuum when a new note starts playing with that too-long attack.. Gneh. Also, the static at the start doesn't really sound super-good to me, sounds kinda digital to me instead of warm vinyl popping. The broken compression has been mentioned, quite uggly ripples there.. Overall, a pretty good cinematique track. Doesn't manage to profoundly grab me, though. Love the bass, still. --Eino -
Great, great track. Arguably a bit short. The instrumentation is like a beautiful wash of sound. I love that synth sax arpeggio/composite.. it sounds incredibly good. If you think that it doesn't sound "real", stop listening to it like it should be and listen to it for what it is. If there's an instrument that part emulates, it's a sampler. I could well imagine a saxophonist constructing that part live by looping him/herself. Don't think just playing that live straight-ahead would sound nearly as good. The sax leads later on sound good enough for me, although *there* there might be some room for a little improvement. Very soft, busy, underwater feel in this track. Me likey. --Eino

OCR01392 - Tsugunai "Static Wonderland"
Eino Keskitalo replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
It's impressive how this piece incorporates a lot of sources, yet it's very coherent. The accordian is great, beautiful and very dramatic. Reminds me of Kimmo Pohjonen, although possibly because he's the only accordianist I know of. I love the static too, and the piano, and the live bass.. delicious. Only flaw in this mix is the choppy sampley violin. But that's minor. This track is major. (sorry, cheap pun) --Eino -
Very, very, very good. Very good. Very, very, very, very, very good. To my ears the guitarist goes a bit over the edge with guitar bends a couple of times, case in point: 00:15, and then again at the beginning. These seriously jump out from such a streamlined, excellent and well-produced effort.. although no-one else has mentioned them, so it might just be me. I think the transitions are ok. "Sudden" works sometimes, maybe they could have been done better but it's fine as it is. --Eino

Strangely likeable, although it indeed sounds pretty dated. -
Really good arrangement ideas, I definitely love those beats! Sounds are bad, the mix is thin and punchless, which is unfortunate. With proper production this arrangement might well kick some ass. --Eino

OCR00258 - Tetris (NES) "Techtris Type Z"
Eino Keskitalo replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Intro and the middle part are indeed the best thing about this ReMix. However, after the middle part, it seems to me that the tetris riff has some extra momentum, it actually sounds much better than the first time around, although it hasn't really changed (except for that awful orch hit.. or is there actually some slight buffing of the synth riff sound?). So, the arrangement definitely has it's merits! Unfortunately, the samples are pretty awful and mar the track badly. --Eino -
OCR00448 - Pulseman "Stereo Superhero"
Eino Keskitalo replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Yup, could definitely use more elements thrown in and yeah, a bit more break from that one arpeggio. It wouldn't necessarily take a lot, but it should be something substantial. The track has a really nice feel, but doesn't have enough meat in it to stand on it's own. That's a pity, I think it could be great. --Eino -
OCR01421 - Alundra "Dreamwalker"
Eino Keskitalo replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Not quite on par with Infinite Natalia as far as Shnabubula's orchestral works go, but good stuff nonetheless. Some of the instruments sound noticeably non-real at places, but the quality of the arrangement indeed trumps over such concerns, ultimately. The sound is maybe a bit muddy to my ears. Anyhow, very enjoyable. Slightly easier listening than Shnab's busier tracks, maybe. Not my favourite shnab-attack, but still very recommendable. It might grow on me even more in time. --Eino -
OCR01433 - Final Fantasy VI "Canvas of Dreams"
Eino Keskitalo replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Am I the only one here that finds this track annoyingly feeble? Maybe it's just too "easy listening" for me. I do have a real issue with the acoustic guitar - the playing is not very tight. And what's that mega-loud chord at 03:15? (Ok, that's nit picking.) I do have to compliment the sax playing. Very pleasant, and a great tone. The guitar lead ain't bad either. Overall however the track is quite limp and frankly it's a bit scary how much love it's getting. Well, I guess it just doesn't do it for me. --Eino -
Great "prog-metal" arrangement! I wasn't so keen about this mix at the start, but the part that begins 01:15 totally won me over. The beginning sounds good to me now as well. Minor flaw of this tune is that to me the non-solo lead sound is a wee bit tinny. More serious flaw is that the drums have a mechanical feel to them and would in my opinion benefit from a more "roomy" sound, they don't much blend with the other instruments which I would prefer. But I have to say the drum arrangement itself is creative, versatile and enjoyable! The use of the choir synth at 02:51 is a fantastic touch. It really makes the part. Very nice solo of course too. No arbitary wankery there. Nice "gliding" sound. I like the ending as it is. I much prefer that cut-off with reverb to a fadeout. EDIT: Whoops, I now realize that there's a cutoff in the reverbed stuff; true, that's an unfortunate glitch. --Eino

Star Control 2 Ur-Quarn theme... take two.

How's this mix going Splunkle? I'd like to hear it (the links have died). I'm thinking of doing a SC2 arrangement myself. --Eino -

I thought so too - WIP's would *definitely* benefit from some reviews. The original idea is of course good as well. --Eino
