  1. This is hot shit, man! And that's saying a lot, coming from me. Really cool stuff, little I can nitpick about. It's not repetitive, it's all good sounds in both quality and usage. The intro felt a bit newbish before I realized it's a style choice to use sharp synths. Drums could need some more work, tho, there's lots of crashes in the background, and the crashes could be longer, too. But overall, it's great! If you submit this, the judges would have a great example of simple sounds and amzing arrangement. That is, unless it's all copy-pasted directly from someone's midi. I can't comment on source/interpretation, but I can say I like this a lot.
  2. I agree with FZNA about your instrument choices, although their processing is a little weird. This is interesting, but not quite good. It's not bad either, tho. The heavily processed piano playing in the bg is a bit too heavily processed, you've got an lfo-run cutoff filter of some kind, notch or band, I guess. Too heavy. Your original drums at around 2:00 and forth, they're a good addition. Add more, move stuff around, and see what happens. It is really not much more than a midi rip, so now comes the first challenge - re-arranging. Then comes mixing. Both can be difficult, but that's how you learn. But this ain't a bad start. Come back with more original content in it, more innovation, more interpretation of the original piece, and better processed tracks, I wanna hear what this can become.
  3. Bad recording, but nice song. Dunno how much is your interpretation and how much is source tune, but I guess you played everything so there's some level of interpretation in everything. It's a nice piece, enjoyable, although a bit repetitive, it could use some more rhythmic work and intensity variation. Didn't hear much of a dramatic curve in it, so you could play it with a story in mind, a story, or part of one that begins as you begin playing, and ends as you cease playing, but it needs a beginning, a middle, an ending. And if you're gonna submit it here, you have to record it better. Import either audio or MIDI (I recommend midi) to the computer and add reverb in any decent sequencer or audio editing software with effects. With MIDI, you'll either need the synth/keyboard connected as you play, or sampled piano as soundfont or something. Probably comes free with any real sequencer nowadays. Good luck!
  4. Hm.... Kraid in 4/4... Prefer the original time signature, but it's not important. The second section from the source tune has some key issues, the bass is in the wrong key. Other than that, only the repetition and the "empty" sections in between (and the last note!) really bothered me, arrangement-wise. The bassline is nice, but needs more variation... and the key sorted out. Drum samples are ok to my ears, but need more processing. They could also use some fills, and more hihat action. Other instruments sounds unprocessed. Listen and compare to the good stuff on ocr, stuff in related genres. I'm being a bit unfair, I think those are well above your level. Unless you can plug in a real guitar, you won't get it to sound like that. But aim for their quality, both in terms of arrangement, and production. For example, you could make your guitar sound something like this. So, practice, and come back with a better version. Learn to listen to your own works critically and learn to fix whatever flaws you find. Good luck and make sure to come back, I've seen a clueless newb become a decent remixer in under six months. It's possible, and I wanna see it again, sooner if possible. Nice job so far!
  5. This would be the perfect song to play when I'm trying to sleep on the bus. Seriously, this is cool. Nice background sounds, one sounds like a vocoded... something. The remix is varying. It's simplistic, but not bad. Really enjoyable. The guitar could need some more velocity variation, but that's about all I can say at this point. And from around 3:00 forth... great. I was typing, didn't see the timecode... That was just perfect, perfect ending. No big grande finale, just... an ending. Fitting perfectly with the song. The judges might disagree, but that's probably because the submission standards dictate more foreground-oriented music. Still worth fixing up a bit and submitting. I dunno how much of this is straight from source and how much isn't. I'm too lazy to find out. That's something you know better. I've got nothing to say about the production side of it either, it sounds good to me, but production isn't my forte. Overall, this is a highly enjoyable background tune, but not as much as a foreground one. Whether that needs to be fixed or not to get a YES from the judges I don't know, but it's really enjoyable already.
  6. Lol, I recognize it. This is funny shit, man, and that's coming from someone who doesn't say lol and doesn't say shit in his posts. *ahem* Anyway, this is familiar ground for mne, I started out, haven't shown anyone here tho, with remixing Metroid, and relatively recently upgraded from GarageBand to Logic Express. It's a pretty good tool to start with It's cut off a little too soon at the end, it feels. Not the file, but the remix, you need some real slight reverb or more release. Delay might work too. The beginning is a little boring, you could let the drums play soft until 0:14 where after a fill they'd come in as they are now. They're a little tame, but ina mix of this nature, I suppose it's okay. My biggest concern is that it's all pretty much the same, intensity-wise. There's an intensity push at 1:13, but before then, it was really repetitive. Overall, monotonous is a good word to describe this. It's not bad, but it sounds very much the same throughout. Vary instrument parts a bit more, leave out drums, in place, move stuff an octave up or down in some places. From 1:13 to 2:32 it's boring. Consider adding another isntrument to switch between, like an electric piano instead of the casual one, or a guitar with different effects. If you can, consider recording a real electric guitar. You don't need an amp, all you need is the guitar, a cable, and a plug adapter to get it to the right size. GB's guitar amp can handle the rest. You cna slow the remix down for recording if you're not good enough to play at this speed, then speed it back up. GB handles the time stretch automatically. About the drums again: I recommend moving each type of drum to a different track. Toms, Kick, hihats, snares, and crashes/rides on different tracks, it gives you the room to better process them, individually. Mostly, that's EQ, compression, and maybe reverb. Just don't go overboard on getting more bass to the kick or more punch to the snare, less is more. What else can I say? This is a really cool, relaxing song, certainly an innovative take on the theme, I've never heard anything like this from Metroid (as far as I remember, anyway). The judges are gonna give you points for that. It is, however, a bit tame and repetitive, and the soundscape is pretty much the same throughout, which you'll be losing points for. This is one of those pieces I guess they'd probably give a NO RESUBMIT, cuz it's gotta be on ocr, but it's still a bit unrefined. I like it.

Songs of Light and Darkness -project direction- With a plan to enhance, extend, and elaborate on the music in the game, Songs of Light and Darkness is meant to be in keeping with the general tone of the original soundtrack, but updated to modern standards and with the personal touch of fans of the game, its music, and game music in general. That means we're looking for tracks that maintains a flavor of world music and atmosphere. It's so the album will be cohesive. We're looking for most kinds of music, but for a cohesive sound we would prefer you don't rely on heavy electronic beats and only electronic-sounding stuff. For exceptions, contact me asap, bring examples. We do like atmospheres and stuff, like weather, waves, ppl, nature, stuff. Just not too much. And hey, try to use as much of the source as possible. Judges like that, we like that, and you ought to like that. The scope of the Seiken Densetsu 3 remix project is enormous, as it's a 60-track OST that we want fully remixed. And now it is. -project staff- Rozovian, director and coordinator, feedback, often hungry, likes wavs Meteo Xavier, assistant director, does more than Rozo does Keiiii, art, a window into the world of sd3 Usa, mastering, consultation -remixers, we need- - your consent to use your tracks - your track as a wav, aif, or other high-quality format (if you can master it yourself, fine; otherwise plz leave dynamics enough for us to work with) - a name for your track, which isn't a need I was expecting to have to list... - info about the track, your thoughts about it and/or the source - we can make something up, too - info about you, a brief bio, formal or informal - again, we can make stuff up if we don't get anything from you -your email address, so we have reliable and consolidated access to you all -help wanted- Promotion - We want people interested in jrpg soundtracks to hear about this album. So close you can hear the whole thing... if you're on ocr staff.
  8. Somewhat interesting concept, but I recommend waiting until you've got more progress with the project before recruiting musicians. Before the gameplay programming is done, you probably won't even need graphics, much less music. Some ppl come by to get musicians because they think music at an early stage makes their game look more professional. Gameplay screenshots, gameplay movies, that's professional. And it helps the musicians know what they're writing for. Before you can provide those, you can't really say you're much different from the wannabe developers that come by and want to beef up their never-gonna-be-completed "game". So, more show. That way, us remixers won't get too disappointed if this is never completed.
  9. Quick reference to midi revealed the source to be easily recognizeable. A little too much so. You could reinterpret the source and mix it up more. Just make sure you don't overdo the interpreting. You should make up your mind about whetrh you want this to be trance-ish or not. Your choice of instruments imply you do, but they're not arranged as basic trance, especially not the drums. With the right mixing, this could sound pretty good, but right now, it doesn't flow as smoothly as trance does, imo. Listen to Blind, he knows what he's doing. You don't have to copy his style or ararngement techniques, but learn from his mixing. You've got some empty sections that could need some bass to back it up. That synth sounds too cheesy to play on its own. If I were you, I'd try adding some envelope-controlled filtering of some kind to it, dunno if you can do that with whatever you're using. Overall, this is promising, but not submittably good. Keep working, and come back to show how it turns out.
  10. Dunno if your should use simple synths, they make it sound a little too NES. Overall, I think you've done well in terms of arrangement. Can't judge the mixing right now, but a quick comparison between two of Blind's works and this one didn't reveal any obvious flaws, at least not on laptop speakers. This is a beautiful piece, and I like what you've done with it. It feels like it's just the right length. It's a little too slow for my taste at first, but towards the end it's just right. I advice you to compare this yourself to Blind's remixes and other works in the same or related genres. ALl I can say, besides what I've already said, is that I like it. It's cool. In more than one way.
  11. I kept waiting for something to happen, and I think you made me wait too long for too little. More energy, and get rid of the repetitive synth much sooner. When it, FINALLY, plays something else, it's cool, but in between, KILL IT! Drums feel kind'a uneven. Using laptop speakers, I can't hear the kick, and am hearing way too much snare. More energy to the drums as well, you could change to a more intense drum progression towards the end, and then go back to the lame (albeit interesting) one you used throughout. Tighten it up, and make it more exciting. Even out the drums and add depth. It's not bad. It's just not good. Yet.
  12. There's little I can say. This sounds like something I would have included on the ocr cds I gave my parents for xmas, so I think it's ocr-quality. It is, tho, in the more boring end of ocr-quality material, but I get the feeling this is a remix for chillin', so I can overlook that. Towards the end, tehre's some kind of traditional synth, square or so, that plays something reminiscent of Tallon Overworld. Using a crystal pad or something like that might help, but rearranging its timing would porbably be ideal.... in addition to finding a more high-quality instrument. The last playthrough could be with the square synth tho, that's something I remember from listening to tracker songs, something I like. I'm a little concerned the main melody is just copy-pasted from source, so some interpretation would be nice. If I was a judge, I'd relisten to the source and if there's no interpretation of the source lead melody, I'd give this a borderline NO. But, that's _if_. In other words, boring, but enjoyable.
  13. I'm currently too lazy to compare to source, so I can't comment on the source/original content ratio. Anyway, this sounds like top score music from some snowboarding game. Not enough nitro. I think the drums are what's causing this problem, they're too groovin'/chillin' and not enough rockin' or racin', if you know what I mean. Try out something with more regular snare timing. Consider double-timing it, too. I can't judge from my laptop speakers, and am too lazy to listen through headphones, but it sounds like it's lacking bass. Add bass. And lose the sound effects. Especially the short drive-bys and the voice. But since you've "just recently became interesting in remixing and arranging", this is impressive.
  14. Consider using crashes... or some similar or otherwise suitable sound where appropriate. Also see if you can include some melodic content. This is cool background or game music, but ocr is more foreground-focused. The melodic sections you've got aren't carrying the song song as well as they should, they just become part of the progression. But sound quality is cool, and I like the mood of this piece. Keep at it!
  15. 24 tracks available and 17 tracks soon to be added to that list. Ten tracks complete or almost complete. 9 tracks taken that aren't yet complete or nearly so. The actual names of the tracks will be revealed when the tracklist is posted... ...once Usa's account works normally or I get mod priviliges to edit it myself. Remixers who have had wips in the project, please contact me or Usa and let us know whether or not you're still interested in doing this or if we can hand out your track to anyone who wants it.
  16. Dude, the first ain't mine. But thanks.
  17. Not unlike the shootings in Tuusula some time ago, there's part stupid, part crazy, and part influence. Stupid - Drinking while babysitting Crazy - Wrestling moves against a little kid But what's the influence? There's violent movies, violent comics, violent games, violent language, violent news, violent stories, violent pictures, violent music... and violent people. Which of these is really the most dangerous? The world would be a better place without Mortal Kombat. But that's got nothing to do with this. Why not blame human nature, since it's responsible for a lot more evil than games?
  18. I'm seeing the need for that wip guide... Host your unfinished works at Tindeck or some other decent host so we don't have to look at a cluttered myspace site. Tindeck also offers the choice of streaming or downloading, which makes it even easier for us to pick whicherever we prefer. Always make it easy for those you want feedback from, buddy. Anyway, your remix in progress... I asked my sister to compare it to a midi. I thought she'd hear how much better your wip was than the midi I used for comparison. She didn't. And neither do I. It's not much more than a conversion from midi to mp3. Where's your original take on it, where's what sets this apart from the original? I'm not saying it's bad, but that's probably due to the source being a beautiful one. This essentially being a midi sound upgrade, a hard to hear one, too, with occational clipping and whatnot means it wouldn't get accepted on OCR. You'd get an easy NO from the judges if you submitted this. Figure out a story, a mood, or something else that you want to convey through the remix, and rearrange it to fit that... thing. Compare ocremixes with theie respective sources to geta feel of how different something must be to get accepted. Read the submission standards and know what you're aiming for. Good luck!
  19. Someone requested this months ago. I have a wip in progress of this, one dangerously close to a resub. Got rejected last time. You can hear an older version on the wip board. Keep in mind that it's an older and not accepted version, so it's still a bit raw. It's progressed far since my last update there.
  20. I've gone over the tracklist and we currently have 21 tracks clearly available, and are in the process of sorting out how many we're not sure about, and whether those are available or not. There's a fair amount of tracks to be added to the available tracks list, so we're not posting an updated tracklist yet. Anyone interested in joining or re-joining this project should express their interest here asap so we know. Especially if you already had a wip in. Remixers previously in the project, please reclaim your tracks or they'll be classed available for anyone to take. Sinewav, I reserved those two tracks for you and whatever collab you may be doing. Abadoss... I'll remind the man behind it all to master it.
  21. I'm hearing some ugly distorted noise in the left channel. At this stage, that's all I can say. It's similar enough to source, it's got an interesting assortment of sounds, and it's overall cool. Gonna wait to say more until there's a little more length and arrangement to it. So far, so good.
  22. At 2 mins, the only thing I still wish would be changed was that it's essentially the same 10 seconds repeated over and over again. But it's arranged beautifully enough for that just to be a minor detail. At 3 mins when that melody is pushed into background, it all just feels right. While I'd still like some more variation, this is good enough for that just to be my preference. If you're still looking to improve it, toss in a variant of the ending or intro melody somewhere in the middle to mix it up. If I was a judge, I'd YES this. This is really great, dude. Answers: 2:40, all good. I like it. 2:24, all good. Works well as they are. If they were the nlast two bits of the piece, reversing them would make a cool ending, but... they aren't. And it's better this way, methinks. 2:20 Sounds good to me. If you're worried about them, copy, rework, and compare. Repeat: While still a bit repetitive, I'd YES this already.
  23. If I were you, I would probably have replied with "Yeah, agreed on the criticism here, esp at 2:20." Like I said, the ending section, it's a great idea, but it's too fat. If you have a harp soundfont, try that one with some really faint strings in the background. An ending there isn't necessary, but it does give the remix a sense of closure. Try a harp and/or a flute. And see if you can kill some repetition by mixing up the material or itnerpreting the source differently. jeremy Robson did that unbelievably well with Not So Ordinary People. The source is quite repetitive as it's jsut different spins on the same bunch of notes, and that remix is one of my absolute favourites. Learn from its arrangement.
  24. 0:30 Whoa, this is really movie score material. 0:42 Yup, still movie score... And a weird note. I know you like those, but... I don't. 1:55-> Really neat. I sense some off-scale stuff, but I don't care. It's just pretty. 2:20-> Wow. 2:40 Okay, now we've heard it already. Still pretty, though. Maybe this is just once too much? 3:15 No, no, no, doesn't sound good. Too massive, fat, or something... too much like a pad. Beautiful thought, but the samples used don't quite live up to the idea. Great idea, semi-decent execution. Find another sample for this, something lighter, less fat. Don't stray from the sound you've employed throughout the piece. And then comes the same melody as we've heard over, and over, and over, and over... But it still sounds good. Just... more variation. You can easy harvest bits and pieces from a tune and create entire new sections from those. Don't overdo it, but try it out. It could lead you to that fresh new melody this wip needs. No headphones, so I can't give much in-depth on production. All that's left to say is that I like it.
  25. Hobo, where's the source? Got my headphones somewhere else so I can't give much in-depth production feedback... which isn't my forte anyway. Arrangementwise, this works. Just, how are you gonna continue it? Where is it going after this? And original vs source ratio... Dude... Either I looked at the wrong source, or you've taken some way underlying textures and turned those into this, or... not.
