Alright, the idea and intent was good, but it suffers from a lot of problems. First thing is that the rhythm is all messed up. You start out with a gallop, then due to the rhythmic problems is becomes a reverse gallop. Your melody adds an extra beat somewhere in there. The production is the second thing that catches my ear. The mixing is terrible, at the moment. The melody is drown in the rhythm and drums. Bring the melody up and the rhythm down (I think the drums are alright). Listen to some common thrash or death metal music (Megadeth, Arch Enemy, Death, etc.) - Listen to how they deal with leads and solos. The melodic parts stick out above the rest of the music. The pitch is very off in many places (namely whenever the second part of the source is involved). Study the source better and figure out what's going on. In it's current state it's hard to make out what you wanted this to sound like (thus I can't comment too much on the structure of the piece). This needs some serious cleaning up. I will add, though, that this particular song could make for a great metal mix if done properly, and I commend your effort (actually playing an instrument for a remix deserves respect). The effort, however, is very messy. Clean it up, fix it up and put it back up here and we'll get into more of the details.

Lyreat, if video game sin was the same as regular sin God would personally smote you on the spot. Fortunately it isn't, so only video game nerds will try to smote you. Oh well, that's what this forum's for ...and I never finished Chrono Cross, either (forgot that one in my list). I refused to cheat or take help and got unavoidably stuck.

Pretty imaginative mix of this... I'm bobbin' my head to it. As for structure, yes, there is a problem with it. Firstly, you build up to the material for one third of the song. A buildup is fine, but having it last so long makes it incredibly dreary and boring. Cut the buildup in half, at least, if not more. After that, the material you use is interesting, but sounds very close to the source structurally (like you said, your biggest problem). When you make changes to the song, don't be afraid to piece together fragments of the theme in order to make something on your own to play with. Currently it plays through each theme in it's entirety, which is bland after the first two times you do it. Break it up and make something out of it - that could break up the monotonous tone it's setting right now. The texture is great, and the style is fresh (for this song) - I didn't see it coming Keep it up!

Hah, nice lyrics on it, too .

Sorry to hear that, man. I don't know if you would've fit in this compo this time, anyhow; it was HUGE this time! Great compo, everyone!

Geh heh... ya, I know what you mean...

If Beethoven could hear this, he'd be rolling in his grave.

Indeed! I'd say, because I never played the game I wouldn't have found this music before (which is quite good, BTW), so thank you BGC for posting and refreshing the 'reviews' section again.I've also gotta thank krale and Sam for the whole flamewar that happened here - that was one of the most violent (and therefore most fun) theory fights I've seen in quite some time. I never heard the source so I can't join in (besides, it's 4 years old...), but I'll put my faith in Sam, on this one. Way to go! I've got to say, the way Sam handled this gives me more respect for him than I already did before (Chopan? lol) Oh ya, great mix; very clean, very smooth. I like the instrumentation, in particular - the bass and violin are great! Edit: I'll add that I commended you for the posts, Sam, because of how civil you were about the whole matter (compared to krale). It shows you are the better person

So how dramatic is the difference between the two? I know that it can tempo change, but I don't hear that in this song . I've got to make the change myself someday in the future (I have other priorities at the moment, but it needs to be done soon)... is there any feature in there that is Reason 4 only? As for the mix, it was a fun little listen; it's always nice to try out a new program (or an upgrade) with video game music . BTW, was that some MM2 Wily music that I was hearing at the end? Seemed to fit pretty well, there.

That was a joke... which is why I don't tell jokes often .

Shit! Video game music isn't classic? I always thought we were listening to some of the 'classics' here.

Sorry, this is the thread you were looking for, my good man. Well, now that I'm here, I'd say BoF IV's final boss was a son of a bitch... It was hard, but a good hard, if you now what I mean. It took 2 1/2 hours to kill both forms, and it actually required me to really think the fight through (which isn't true for any other game...). 'Course, I was underleveled for the fight (~37, 38 for the end), so I'm sure that contributed to the difficulty.

OCR01820 - Super Metroid "In Your Prime"
Gario replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I didn't know you could vary this song in so many ways... it's amazing. I really, really like the link to Norfair in there at 2:52 (and the double-time of that at 3:41), it was perfect. I hear that this track is one of the really overmixed tracks on this site, and I'm personally against having so many mixes of the same damn track... unless the latest mix of it is the single best rendition of it on the site. This is the single best rendition of this song on this site. Thank you far making this. -
Alas, so did I... in all of it's baby blue glory... I've done that too, sadly... Thanks for opening up that scar for me. Ok, that's beyond me.

As contradictory as it is to my sig, I'd go with A... Although I have the entire torrent, so I may do just what you did, Kizyr - it'll make me a more balanced person )

My shame on the NES... I spent enough time on 'Silver Surfer' to beat the game... without any cheats (but it did have a DAMN GOOD soundtrack, so this may be forgivable). I owned a copy of Amagon (which is utterly unforgivable).

Submit, anyway; I try to even if it is complete crap (like my submission this week ). I don't care, and I'm sure no one else does, either. We are limited to an hour, after all, so we have the perfect excuse .EDIT: Cripes! I guess you guys liked the song! Thanks! I felt it wasn't good enough, I guess... Makes me out to look like an asshole in this forum .

In my humble opinion, SNES always has better music than the Genisis, with few exceptions. This is one of those few exceptions, as this is spectacular.

Price of Freedom - Work in Progress 3/18/09
Gario replied to hewhoisiam's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Hey, I remember this! First thing's first, please add some sort of name to the files vs. 'v1, v2, v-it's-over-9000', etc. It's not a problem for most people, but I like to hold on to older files of WIPs and compare the progress, but these are replacing your other WIPs... Then again, it's a deterrent for creepy collectors like me, so maybe you'll want to stick to your naming convention... Oops, I'm an idiot, you've got the source on your first post... I read the second post and thought it was the first Onto the music... If I recall, one of the issues that you were having before was that the harmonies never changed from the original. It's the case in this version, as well. I'd recommend expanding the music by writing some new material for it harmonically. It sounds OK where it's at, but the harmonies are used for four and a half minutes, so I start to tire of the sound eventually. I'd post what I said before, but that would be too frickin' long for the regular reader . In short, I suggest some strategies to expand the harmonies used into something else... Try using some of that to compose new material for this (or make up stuff without referencing that PM; it may have been a little unclear what I was trying to say in that ). The sounds are cleaner on this version than your last one. The samples are a bit sub-par, though. I'd suggest finding better samples. I like the arrangement and the use of many different instruments. You seem to have a knack for writing interesting textures and symphonic colors. In short, very nice arrangement, but it doesn't overcome the lack of harmonic variety. If you fixed the harmonies and used some better samples this would be a very nice piece! -
Can anyone recommend some new age OC ReMixes?
Gario replied to Ascendancy's topic in General Discussion
That was what DarkeSword was getting at; What sounds like new age for one group of people may sound like Orchestral music for another, so when people are giving a list of 'New Age' music, it really is a list of what they THINK is New Age on this site (which is subjective). At OC there is often a blur in the genres so it is difficult to distinguish what something truly is. For example... I don't know if I'd call this new age per say, although it is a quite badass track. You just gave an example of this discrepency yourself... Flare4War thinks 'Triforce Majeure' is New Age, whereas you do not. That is a subjective opinion, in this case, not a fact. -
Can anyone recommend some new age OC ReMixes?
Gario replied to Ascendancy's topic in General Discussion
That's true, of course. Personally, I know I don't have to follow the staff (and neither does anyone else); I just personally agree with them on that particular subject entirely. Then he'll find New Age among other genre's that achieve the same thing (New age is one genre, smooth jazz is another, Trance can be another genre that's relaxing as long as it isn't bLiNd ). I'm not saying stop searching for a genre altogether (as it seems that I've implied, which I didn't mean to), I'm just saying let him do the footwork a little so he can form his own library, there. It's not a good thing when people form a list of what he should listen to - he'll be missing out on a lot of great music that isn't listed as he may not be searching. My post may have been slightly overzealous, but I stick to (most of) what I've said. Besides, it's not like I can stop the posts that are already here that have New Age and 'chill' tracks listed Edit: I just read your post, DarkeSword, and I agree with you in part, so I changed my first post accordingly. However, I do believe that doing some of the searching yourself is also highly beneficial (vs solely following other's suggestions)... I hope this sounds more like a proper topic of debate rather than flaming ( '~' ) -
A serious list, or a joke of a list... I'll do both! Seriously... -Finish my GRE -Buy a new computer that isn't complete crap -Get together a proper portfolio for others to listen to -Get into a respectable grad program like USC As a joke... -Finish my GRE (lol) -Buy a new computer that isn't complete crap (lol... it'll never happen) -Get together a proper portfolio for others to listen to (lol again...) -Get into a respectable grad program like USC (roflmao) See? I'm a minimalist comedian!

Possible OCR soundtrack project for a game I'm working on
Gario replied to FireSlash's topic in Recruit & Collaborate!
Hey, Blake mentioned a 'Battle' music that you want to have implemented. I'm fine with that, but will the battle music cut the zone music often? Right now, my music more or less builds to the real guts of the piece, but if the battle music will be interrupting it every minute or so I'll need to make some changes to the zone music accordingly. -
Mega Man 2 - Wily 1 -- For You - Vox Mix
Gario replied to AkumajoBelmont's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Adding the chorus was a big improvement to that last part, needless to say! How many 'effects' were you planning on putting in there? Like you said before, the new sounds added into the piece currently are placeholders, but those seem to drown the original effect a little. I hope the permanent sounds are not as obtrusive to the piece as a whole... Thanks for the update! I'm sure there are gonna be a lot of happy people when they hear this one... -

I agree whole heartedly with DJPrez's opinion on this. Don't come onto the site looking for a particular genre - expand your horizons and try everything. Be pleasently surprised when something comes up that is from a genre you like. He doesn't want to encourage that kind of navigation, and neither do I. Edit: According to DarkeSword, I guess this kind of navigation IS encouraged... *foot entering Gario's mouth now* Look around the site, explore, experiment, and discover that there is more out there for you! Edit: I took out the first line, as that was unnecessary, on my part. I do believe, however, that doing some of the legwork yourself is beneficial, so I'm not backing out entirely
