  1. No dude, EVERYONE customized the controls because the default was pretty bad. I tried L for dash once thinking it'd solve my problems, but lo and behold, you had to use L for the X-Ray visor in that set-up (wtf?), so I was like "Well, THAT didn't work."
  2. If you want to talk about clunky controls, I still maintain that Super Metroid has some clunky control issues. You have to sometimes contort your fingers and hold the controller in odd ways if you want to pull off running, jumping, and shooting all at the same time (or usually just a combination of the two). And the Space Jump is always so darn hard to figure out. For me the perfect Metroid controls were in Zero Mission. EVERYTHING just worked. And worked flawlessly. This is not to say that Super Metroid is not great, but if it had Zero Mission controls... man I think it would be absolutely perfect, as opposed to nearly perfect (95% or so in my eyes). And no one plays Metroid for the story, man. It's for the GAMEPLAY. You're missing out. I'm agreeing with Mutericator, Metroid does not need cinematics or cutscenes to really tell a story. The best Metroid stories are told at your own pace, and are given through environmental clues and other observations (in this regard Super Metroid and Metroid Prime have told the best Metroid stories). That's not to say there CAN'T be cutscenes- Sakamoto can do whatever the hell he wants- I'm just saying that ideally the game is not bogged down by a need to tell some heavy-handed Japanese pseudo-story the likes of which Square Enix has become especially known for. For Other M, i see it like Fusion: there is a story and there are cutscenes/monologues (in the same sense there were in Fusion). I don't think it hampered Fusion all that much aside from the unskippable 5-minute intro (which I have saved over and every time I play the game I start from that save) and they were effective in heightening some of the tension and drama. I don't think that R&D1 (or whatever that team is called now) has to try to do the same thing in every game; if they want to branch out and try a more 'cinematic' Fusion-styled game, I'm fine with that, since I really enjoyed Fusion for the tension and the revealing nature of the story (I mean, who didn't get scared whenever there was an SA-X encounter, or who wasn't surprised when they found the Restricted Lab?). However, what made those moments great is that Fusion was not focused on story, ultimately. It was focused on tried-and-true Metroid exploration and environmental observation. If Other M can keep that, I'm sure it'll be a success in my eyes. Several reviews have said mixed things, on whether the story or the game takes precedence. I hope that when I play it, the latter factors more than the former.
  3. Newish trailer? Or rather, recently localized/translated trailer. REMEMBUH ME? Oh and a post i found in relation to that XPlay review:
  4. I felt like Webb's review was rubbish. It seemed more like an angry rant than an actual review. Most reviews are putting this into the 8.5ish category, and that's totally fine by me. As for cutscenes, like I said in my longer post, it appears that the cutscenes are prevalent mainly at the beginning, and at the end (with some heavy stuff at some point in the middle). Other than that, it's very much a solitary game. Low scores upset me, and I mean "low" relatively speaking, but usually only for games I'm on the fence about buying (I've bought games with general scores as low as 6 and loved them). 1.5 away from a perfect 10 is not too bad, all things considered, you know. As for not playing the game but complaining about it, insert Super Paper Mario Francis quote here >_> I've read enough and seen enough about this game to know with some confidence that I'm going to love it, flaws and all.
  5. Practical: Reload your gun every time you enter a new room. Just do it. You don't want to be cornered by monsters and zombies with an unloaded gun now, do you?
  6. Metroid fanboys did. I bought it thinking "Has there been a bad Prime game yet???"
  7. I actually played and beat Hunters 4 times. Because each time I had beaten it, reasoned very hard to myself "I must have done something wrong in the course of the game. There's no WAY I could have played through such a poorly-designed game. There MUST be something I'm missing." And that argument won again and again until I finally beat it through my head after being locked in 500th room fighting Guardians for the one-millionth time that yes that game was not fun. That single-player was sub-ASS.
  8. A guy I know got hold of a review copy of the game and played it and subsequently wrote a review. This guy is probably a bigger Metroid fan than most (being the head of Metroid Database and all; he certainly writes through the eyes of a long-time admirer ofthe series and not some ding-dong at IGN), and some things to note from his review (he 100%'d it in 15 hours his first playthrough): -hours go by without a cutscene. The story elements really are only there during the beginning, some stuff in the middle, and the very end -gameplay is good, though the switch to FP mode takes getting used to. Also, Samus is very fast which also takes getting used to. -the game is linear on par with Metroid Fusion (much in the same way, Adam loves to just lock doors once again, a trait he seems to have taken with him beyond the grave) -the ship is HUGE, and there are LOTS of secrets jammed into nearly every room. In fact, the quote is "the best point of gameplay is the exploration" -there is fan-service thrown in for the ol' diehard Metroid fans, though he wasn't specific as to what that meant. He said it was really enjoyable, but in hindsight it didn't make much sense -the cutscenes look really good and Samus animates beautifully. You'll either like the voices or not. As for the plot, everything we've seen thus far is really only from the first four hours of the game, but one element of the plot leaves you scratching your head when all is said and done All in all, he said this game is on par with Metroid Fusion. Not the Ultimate Other Metroid experience or whatever, and it could have gone with a bit more polish, but in the end it was intended ultimately for Metroid fans. the review be here: http://www.metroid-database.com/mom/review_Cap.php This confirms what my suspicions I've had about the game as it has moved closer to launch. At the least I know -I'm- still going to enjoy the hell out of it. Oh and as an aside, comparatively speaking, DKC was in some ways designed poorly. I think DKC2 was an infinitely better game, and a more fun and memorable one, at least in my opinion. I think Super Metroid is better even than that, but it's close. They're up there for me in that "my favorite games of all time" list.
  9. Retro may have understood Metroid pretty darn well at Metroid Prime, but I think we can all agree as the series progressed that understanding grew less and less... Honestly, I think with Corruption, I think Retro should have fired most of their writing staff and given their salaries to the art staff. And I'm kinda tired of every single hot-dog with a blogspot out there on the internet keeps on complaining about how this game will be different than the Prime series or how things are all changed from Prime and this is a point of complaint. It's like these folk forgot there were other Metroid games before the Prime series. I'll be looking for comparisons to the 'main' series a whole lot more than I'll be looking for any indication of the Prime series.
  10. I have mixed feelings about Powered Up (which is at least better than my "meh" for Maverick Hunter X*), but let's just say No, Nothing could EVER look intimidating in the Powered Up universe. And lol at Mega Mari. You know, I wonder how a side-scrolling MMO would work. I haven't played any MMOs before, so if there IS one I'm not aware, but that's just my take. I'd imagine something like Mega Man ZX as far as a world is concerned. *This is combined with a complete loathing of MH X's shitty remixed soundtrack. Way to ruin an excellent OST, Capcom.
  11. Team Ninja is not doing that, though. Sakamoto is doing that, and he (along with Gunpei) are basically the co-creators of Metroid. Team Ninja handled the combat/other aspects of gameplay, Sakamoto and his Metroid crew handled game design, and D-Rockets handled cinematography and character models, I believe. I also heard rumors that the guy who wrote that Infendo review admitted he didn't even finish the game. I am getting this game delivered to me on Wednesday, with Amazon's 20-dollar bonus attached to it (to go towards my purchase of Sin and Punishment 2, another game i have been looking forward to, but not as much). I've been a HUGE Metroid fan since I got hooked on the series with Metroid Prime (though my first Metroid game was MII: Return of Samus), and since have beaten every Metroid game. Just about everywhere else on the internet my username is "Emperor Ing", 'cuz he was a pretty cool boss fight. I won't lie and say I'm not worried about the direction of the game regarding cutscenes, but from most impressions and most videos I've read, I have a feeling that this game will be a lot like a much bigger and more enriching version of Metroid Fusion, a game which I also really enjoyed. And yeah I like to think Samus DOES have a well-developed character at least in the context of the series, though I will freely admit that Sakamoto is no master-writer, and that sometimes the huge plot holes between the Prime series and the regular series boggle my mind at points. But that's all besides the point; more than anything, I've been waiting for a 'classic' Metroid game since Zero Mission and really hope at the very least the game sells well. Metroid has this bad propensity to A) not get good marketing or any marketing at ALL and most perplexingly not sell very well. At least good sales might deter another 8 year gap inbetween games, if that's even possible anymore.
  12. Darn Koreans getting their one exclusive game. The trailer is pretty darn pumpin', except for Cutman in Drag. Yeah, not a good idea. And I don't know about YOU guys but fuck, Yellow Devil is ALWAYS intimidating to me. Because as soon as I see those yellow blobs move at me I KNOW I'm in for a world of hurt. But yeah, the trailer is pretty exciting, probably more so than the actual game will be, I think.
  13. Been listening to a lot of J-Poppy Touhou remixes, which pretty much means any serious opinions I have concerning music and the art of music can be invalidated with that fact alone. But sometimes I gets in the mood.........
  14. Oh it's a great game. But how can you not love COLONEL I'M DISAPPOINTED IN YOU ...WHAT?
  15. DMaster, I WAS blaming CAPCOM. I guess I should have said EXE game series. Neat concept, way to gay up the Robot Masters, d00ds. And Schwaltzvald: I mean the Ruby-Spears cartoon. All things told, the cartoon succeeds in two ways: 1) It's so horribly cheesy and inconsistent as to be hilarious in every episode (gosh, what new cutting-related joke can they give to Cutman????). 2) The voices, ALL of them, are spot-on perfect. As for the anime, I think we can all agree no matter how exciting the anime may seem, it will never top the masterpiece that is Mega Man X4's gripping scenes, like .
  16. It's one of the better ones, I admit.

    Happy to help!

  17. Well dicks. it looks like I picked the wrong one.
  18. I just sure wish the .EXE series didn't change all the designs of the RMs into something really gay.
  19. I bought 2 thinking it was going to be one of the best games ever... And what I got was a mess. The very first dungeon is nigh-unconquerable, and the game has this wonderful habit of never telling you what you can and cannot equip, and whether those weapons are even better than the ones you already possess. It's frustrating to the extreme. I might try picking it up again later, but I've never finished the game. It's surprised me that I couldn't best it considering I've beaten FF1 and FF3 (the former many times), and yet not this. Again I blame this on game design. I'm not saying don't buy it, but you're in for one hell of a clunky ride unless you have a guide (I didn't). I am just recommending against it. The music is pretty darn good, too. People say the plot in 2 is pretty good, but I never got far enough to see for myself. You did do the right thing, though. Of the Sega PS games, PS IV is in my eyes the best of them. I never played PS 1, but I'd suspect it has some of the same pitfalls that II had that I described. You might write it off as what RPGS were like back in the day, but it doesn't make it any more playable. And hey, Skies of Arcadia may be in ways derivative, but it was a hell of a lot of fun, and unlike a lot of RPGs of last generation, it was actually fun to play and explore in. And the ship battles rocked. The reason that a lot of RPGs these days aren't all that great is because they've really either gone the Square Enix Final Fantasy route and forgot why RPGs are fun to begin with, go the Atlus route and make the games impossibly niche (oh Etrian Odyssey... one day you will be loved too), or have gone the third route and never learned from the 8- and 16-bit games at all (most modern RPGs and especially Nostalgia DS and Glory of Heracles, I'm looking at YOU). RPGs are all about the joys of incremental improvement, dungeon-crawling, and exploring. For some people (I'm one of them), it's FUN to go around grinding your stats and money, get better weapons and skills, and then going to town on the poor bastard monsters standing in your way. You top it off with boss fights that require some more finesse and strategy, and you've got a fundamentally fun game (take Final Fantasy 1 for example). A good plot is icing on the cake, but as we all know, cake without icing is pretty damned gay. I mean, it's probably because a lot of companies try to totally deviate from the RPG formula or add useless things to it (take FF XI- onward and games like Sakura Wars), and the alternatives they are adding are just not fun. Heck they are remaking Lufia 2 for the DS, not as a stellar remake of a classic RPG, but as a stupid action game (this furthers my suspicion that SE is now incapable of making a good RPG). Another good Sega RPG (though more strategy than JRPG) is Shining Force 2.
  20. I think this is performed better than the portal mix, myself. Outside of that guy coughing! Ha ha, in any event, this is pretty great, and I really love the Wind Waker soundtrack. Especially when played by live instruments.
  21. I think a cartoon about the regular mega man series would be far more entertaini- Oh wait, it was.
  22. You know they are making a Black Lagoon OVA now, right? Which basically puts the entire next story arc into 3-episode form (I believe?), or if not that, movie form (which is basically 3-ep form)? Expect to see the return of crazy psycho maid. "Roberta's Blood Trail" is what I believe it's called. I will say though, that Black Lagoon is one of my all-time-favorite anime. Also, I'm watching Kino's Journey. It's pretty nice to have a well-written, believable, down-to-earth, and likable lead in an anime for a change. And I don't mean I haven't watched anime with those elements before, I'm just saying that Kino in Kino's Journey has ALL of them and more. It's a pretty damn good series.
  23. Just pick a song and go for the gold, mah boi. What would be really funny and awesome is if someone did a whole rework of the .Now THERE was a song to remember. Though, since the song is perfect already, is there any way TO remix it?
