there are several reasons why the HD display looks lousy. if the issue is big blocky artifacting and choppy video, that tends to indicate reception issues (a lot of big-box stores get their TV via satellite). if it is general fuzziness and smaller artifacting, it is more likely signal degredation during splitting (because big box stores don't run the signal digitally from end to end. if you look at the back of the TV, they are almost always using the component connectors) and, of course, if two almost identical TVs are playing the same thing side by side, and one looks awful while the other is gorgeous, then the store is trying to convince you that monster cables are worth the obscene markup (or that you need to get your HDTV calibrated)

windows recently stopped working for me, and reinstalling resulted in exciting new issues (I did not know that two installs of windows could be made to the same drive... very strange). so my computer, as of about two weeks ago, runs Ubuntu as it's primary OS, with Windows XP for games that I can't get to work right under Linux (I managed to snag a free copy of Crossover Games during their 'Lame Duck Challenge'). linux is tricky, in my experience, but definitely worth it if you persevere.

if you weren't planning on gutting it, I would point out that the Xbox's controller ports are just funny-shaped USB ports (with 1 extra contact fo V-sync, which you would not be using anyway). While the Xbox makes a great media center for SD content, and is also a fantastic emulator box, I wouldn't want to build a new HTPC from the ground up inside one. still, it's a matter of personal preference.

painkiller had the Impaler, which was essentially a telephone-pole launcher. it's similar, if not comparable.

my understanding of it is that to accept a particular credit card as payment, you have to sign a deal with the managing company, which also entails what sort of fees you have to pay them for the right to accept their card. from what I've been told, AmEx's fees are higher than those charged by other companies. anyone who knows more about it, please feel free to correct me.

I never got very far in it, sadly. first because playing it on anything smaller than about a 30" TV is a nightmare, second because my games and Xbox got stolen (still have the controller, though). I actually liked bits like having to hit the eject button to avoid death. you get plenty of time to react, as I recall... I just wish, and some reviewers agreed, that some of the switches were for more than just startup. if you are dumb enough to shut off the oxygen recycler in your VT, you should asphyxiate, etc.

bearing in mind this was back in 2004, but I exploited a flaw in a local EB Games computer system during a "buy two get one free" sale on used games... their system was marking the most expensive game as free. result, $30 of my own money (plus a $50 gift card) netted me the following. Tron 2.0, Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, Grand Theft Auto III, Red Faction, Comand & Conquer: Generals Deluxe Edition, Sin, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Railroad Tycoon 2 Platinum, Battlezone 2, Star Trek: Armada, the 7th Guest, The Simpsons: Hit and Run, Quake 2, Star Wars: Jedi Knight - Jedi Outcast, Black & White, Grand Theft Auto 2, Max Payne 2, Midtown Madness 2, Rune, Homeworld 2, Homeworld, MDK2, Dark Reign 2 (the bolded ones were free. the copy of generals would've been $50 on it's own.) there was one other game, which was total crap, and I can't remember, I just grabbed it to get Homeworld 2 free, I think. there was also, more recently, Psychonauts for Xbox for $12 at Gamestop.

I haven't read the comic, never even heard of it. but having just watched the trailer, I am intrigued. yes, it looks to be a predictable over-the-top-action-and-CGI-laden-explode-a-thon, but sometimes that's exactly what I want to see. of course, living in the middle of nowhere, it will be a long time before I can see it.

give it a little more time, the trial only has a quarter of the parts... I'm sure the FSM will show up not long after the full version gets widespread. EDIT: Omega: of course people will make things like that... though the fact that there is also a Purple Tentacle, a Mad Cat, and a Cacodemon is pretty awesome. hopefully, the other horrid abominations at that link will not be around for long (as you can ban things from your personal sporepedia)

I think charging for the full version of the creature creator is disgusting, myself... but this is definitely fun.

I saw the trailer, and I felt a great pang of regret. because I suddenly wanted very hard to play through BG&E, but could not, as some asshat stole my game collection. ah well, I can only hope I have everything back by the time BG&E2 comes out.

you people are making me feel old, and that ain't fair. I remember watching The Screensavers when the hosts were still Leo Laporte and Kate Botello, back when it was still ZDTV. I miss those days. every time the station changed hands it lost it's focus a little more. I stopped watching when it became G4 and threw out almost the entire old guard (I think Sessler is the only person left from the early days, not certain, though)
