  1. I'm just drawing a comparison between the two. I haven't yet played DA:O (have it, just haven't gotten around to it yet), so I don't know if the same issue holds in the first or not. It's just a parallel issue BioWare has seen before.

  2. Different, maybe, but it's actually a good idea. Those who don't have the space to hold the higher detail can opt out without having to download the whole package. Though it is odd that they didn't just put it on a separate disc for physical copies... or did they, and I'm just clueless?

  3. Played and enjoyed already. It helps that I'm a computer engineer, my brain's already half-wired for the computational side of things. These are all variations on finite-state machines, with spatial and topographical limitations there to make it a challenge.

Does the game have special 'achievements' or the equivalent for efficient solutions (minimal time / complexity)? That would take the cake for me, since it helps push for better solutions.

  4. Just because the Wii's controls are different doesn't make the game itself more or less difficult by a whole order or magnitude. Honestly, some people are just better than others at solving the kind of puzzles Zelda throws at you. To those who it's a challenge for, and who still push through anyway, congrats! I bet you can enjoy the game in a completely different way than many of u s, and I bet you feel more satisfied and accomplished than we would at beating each dungeon.

  5. C'mon, no MUDs?

Other than that, still slightly curious about Rift. Problem is, I don't have that much time to invest in an MMO, given all the project courses I'm taking. There's also the matter of subscription feeees.

Maybe I'll pick up a couple months sometime and piddle around, perhaps over Summer.

  6. Ooof. Sorry to break it to you, Tim, but this isn't sounding so hot.

A lot of the problem is coming from the guitar. For the most part, the orchestral section seems fairly tight. But that synth guitar sounds like you pulled some baaad FL Slayer presets. It plays one tone at one volume: no dynamics at all, which is a terrible thing for a lead. It's hurting the song quite a bit.

The other major problem lies in the arrangement. Most of this song is simply a medley; 'You're Not Alone' clips in once in awhile between the battle theme, and once at the end, but other than that, each section sounds exactly like the source with minorly pumped-up drums (which sound good too, by the way) and that guitar synth. Basically, it sounds like a slightly-modified MIDI rip, which is generally not going to be accepted by the judges.

You can definitely produce and master your tracks; just try to work on finding guitar that isn't so grating, and being more creative. Right now, this is more of a cover than an arrangement: try to reinterpret the songs, find a way to blend them together so that the ReMix is greater than the sum of its parts.

  7. Weee've been over this before. Competing for profit can force companies to make decisions that benefit the consumers; but, while competition isn't inherently bad, corporate greed destroys what good could have come out of it.

Looking forward to watching when I'm back from class.

EDIT: Aaaand I missed your point entirely. Yeah, on the creative/innovative side of things, profit doesn't really help. It's inherently a risk to innovate: one most companies aren't willing to take.

  8. if anything we've been following on their coattails for the past 2 decades, especially as far as dance music is concerned

I was looking at it from a pop point of view, which probably isn't even closely related to the dance field. I think I'll go back to the corner and shut up now. ;)

  9. I can just see the fights now.

"Justin, go to bed! No, I'm serious, they're after me! Justin? JUSTIN! GET IN BED RIGHT NOW THEY'RE GONNA EAT ME OH GRAAAAAAAAAAA~"

But yeah. Schwaltzvald definitely has a better alternative. The only time you really want to skip night-time is early on, during the tedious startup. After that, you just keep a sword and a boatload of torches with you.

Perhaps it would work better if the night-skip happens only in peaceful mode, when everyone prefers working in the daytime. Once the monsters are out, though, the bed should be able to operate differently. Perhaps he could treat it like the grail in La Mulana, where you can keep several bed-checkpoints, and teleport between them...

  10. no I'm saying you won't sleep through the night because you will get jumped by a monster before dawn even gets close

I know because I just tried

But on multiplayer, that would break the 'skip night-time' feature, since you'd be skipping in very small chunks as monsters keep waking up everyone else.

  11. I'm digging the arrangement aspect of this, and your synths are sounding pretty sweet too, but boy is it clipping near the end. You've gotta lower the volume and master this quite a bit; as it is, it's harder to hear all the parts when the song is so blown out.

Definitely looking forward to further progress on this, though.
