Mario Sports Mix: Mario Press Conference
Murmeli Walan replied to Overflow's topic in General Discussion
This put a big dumb smile on my face. -
Just watched the first part. Really fascinating stuff if you're a fan of SW or just movie making in general.

Looks like news of the album's donation drive got picked up by one of the bigger Sonic fansites, TSSZNews: http://www.tssznews.com/2011/02/04/nights-ocremix-project-seeking-donations/

The Old Fogies From UnMod Thread
Murmeli Walan replied to Bagel Fuzzynuts's topic in General Discussion
Hey, it's Groundhog Day. Remember that one guy Walan and how he's from that town and obsessed with that retarded holiday or some shit? Me neither. -
I watched the "Best of Season One" video on Blistered Thumbs yesterday, and I really enjoyed it. I for one am really glad that artists are getting proper credit on the show as opposed to "HERE IZ GRAET ZELDA REMIX ENJOY!!!" The show is smooth, it has a nice flow, there's a great balance between music from famous and obscure games. The game footage music videos are nice, and you should consider asking people from the community here to contribute some videos for the show, as well. Grats on getting picked up by TGWTG, you've got a new regular listener here.

How did you come up with your artist name?
Murmeli Walan replied to adambomb337's topic in General Discussion
Walan is the original version of the name. It's simply my real first name, Alan, with a W in front of it. At the time I had thought of it, I was a big fan of Wario games (Wario Land 4 is still one of my favorite original GBA games ever). The Murmeli part came from a poster from the old UnModerated forums by the name of Omega. He's from Finland, and one day out of the blue he sends me a private message telling me that the word "murmeli" is the closest Finnish word for groundhog. I'm from Punxsutawney, the town that created Groundhog Day, so I adopted Murmeli into my username. So there ya go. -
Ok ok ok, no more albums! But this, it's also a good idea. More music from underremixed genres!

I had an idea at work yesterday. If this happens, then there should be an OCR remix album that goes with it. Like, an album where all the remixes are done in a dinner party/ballroom style. Thoughts?

Used Game Stores, Sega Saturns, and other things
Murmeli Walan replied to EC2151's topic in General Discussion
YOU TAKE THAT BACK. WWF NO MERCY IS GOLD. The ECW and non-AKI-developed WCW games, however, are total garbage. Anyway, I own a Sega Saturn, it's a real nice machine. Totally worth the money you're thinking of putting into it. My collection is very very small, however. Virtua Cop, Sonic 3D Blast, NBA Jam TE, Daytona USA CCE, and a handful of sports games. Get that Dreamcast, too. I've got one of those used game stores a couple towns over from me called Video Game Xchange. They treat customers well there. I once bought a small stack of NES games like Startropics 1 and 2, Goonies 2, and Commando. The guy who owned the store threw in a standalone copy of Duck Hunt for free (he said it would "bad karma" for him to charge me money for it). On top of that, the guy opened every game, pulled out the ROMs, and scrubbed the contacts down, then tested them in an NES behind the counter before he rang them up. Good, good service. -
I was standing next to a guy who had all the Zelda CDi games for him to sign.
-
You bet he is. He's having a panel, and hopefully an autograph session afterward like last year. Really soon, it's still being finalized. Last year was kinda crazy, there was some sort of problem and they didn't have copies of the schedule to give out until a day or so into the con.

Super Dodge Ball: Around the World - History

You mean, say, an "Album Version" and an "OCR Version" of the same remix? I dig. -
Super Dodge Ball: Around the World - History
Murmeli Walan replied to Murmeli Walan's topic in Projects
Ok, time for my opinion. For me, all the music in SDB is tied to that game. I wasn't aware that any of the music was based on folk music until I started this project. That being said: I do kind of side on the judges here. I mean, it's kinda hard for remixers to know sometimes what was composed for the game and what was covered. You don't want people remixing the William Tell Overture because it was used in the NES game . That's one of the reasons why OCR has a judges panel, anyway. As for the Tetris thing... of course there's a double standard here, but it's not being kept secret or anything. Yes, Tetris is far and away a much more known and celebrated game than SDB, and I do understand why the folk song in that game is much more tied to Tetris (case in point: I'm not even bothering to look up the name of the song to spell it. I'm just gonna say "the Tetris song" and everyone knows what I'm talking about. The panel is put into a tough spot here: of course all the remixers of "the Tetris song" won't be pulled, that would just be wrong. But they can't not accept new remixes of that theme, either. Yes, you wanna keep OCR to just music composed FOR video games, but Tetris just has that ability to bend that rule because of it's extreme popularity.I'm getting rambling here, let's just get to the bottom line. I'm not upset or angry that Jordan's excellent track isn't getting passed by the panel. I'm not even disappointed. When Around the World releases, people will still listen to his remix, regardless if it's front page posted or not. It's only being rejected by a technicality, not because it's bad musically. Even if every single track got rejected, Around the World would still get listened to, and I'm willing to bet a lot that nearly everyone who listens will love it. That's what matters the most to me. I very much respect Kyle's opinion, but I don't think this is a setback by any stretch. -
*thumbs up*

Volunteer staffers are getting an early look at the Magfest schedule RIGHT NOW. Oh God, you guys. Soooooooo much awesome stuff going on. Soooooooo many awesome panels to look forward to. There's even a couple things I've never ever seen at a con before. Mustin: Is there a tracklisting for this new OneUps album? Not that it matters, I'll be buying it no matter what's on it.

I'm boring. I don't think I've ever played a Zelda game where the hero wasn't named Alan.

The Grammar Club Presents: MC Horse Rides Again!
Murmeli Walan replied to suzumebachi's topic in General Discussion
Around the time of the first album, I was just out of school and unemployed, so that track was kinda my anthem for a while, heh. I've downloaded the album but haven't listened yet, I'll give my opinions after I do. I am excited though that the talent on this album is far and away larger than the first album. -
I was a huge supporter of the idea when the first bundle came out, and even though World of Goo is the only game that runs perfectly on this old computer, I'm still glad I bought the bundle. If you haven't bought this great collection of games yet, there's totally no reason not to. DRM-free, some of the games have soundtracks included, some of the games have source codes included, PC, Mac, Linux, AND Steam links on top of all that...get it.

You'll hear Jeff Ball soon enough. He's contributing live violin for Protricity's track on Around The World.
