  1. Ironical statements don't seem to come across well on forum speak. The game dropped the ball in so many ways that i'm sure many a sonic fan was in denial over how bad it was. From the boring level design right down to Jun Senoue's work which seemed like half assed attempts at direct covers of Nakamura's classics. On the other hand Episode 2 was a significantly better game but not good enough to reverse the let down that was sonic 4 ep. 1
  2. yes! finally someone i can agree with on these matters! of course '06 was bad but every game since then has been far more competent than people have been admitting to. Sonic Unleashed-Awesome ...despite some things. Sonic Colors-Awesome Sonic Generations-Awesome Sonic 4 Ep1- ...was a good effort! Sonic 4 EP2- Awesome Sonic Boom-Doesn't exist; never did. really.
  3. Looks awesome! Some of the footage i've seen even looks like they are going to do completed versions of levels that were part of beta versions of the games. Doesn't this stage look similar to genocide city from the sonic 2 beta?
  4. gonna have to be contradictory on this one. Slowing a passage down is a great way to learn something especially if you have problems playing it at normal speed. If you take audacity for example and slow the tempo of something down by up to 30% in many cases it'll be easier to hear the intervals despite a small amount of artifacts that are generated. Beyond that though it allows you to hear how the notes are being shaped during the passage in greater detail. Even if you are the type to mouse in every single note, little things that you can do learn to do to shape individual notes either through playing or through CC controllers and mod wheels are much easier to hear when a passage is slowed down. Not only that but slowing something down wakes your brain up to pay attention to what is being heard. Which is really why people are able to hear small articulations or individual notes so well as you mentioned to end up with a nearly perfect cover of the original. You might discover that the 2 notes played in succession that you thought were a 4th apart were actually a 5th, or that a note glissandos quickly from a minor 3rd before landing on the intended note, both of which can contribute to the "this doesn't sound wrong but something isn't right" phenomenon that occurs often in the early stages of ear training. As far as recommended programs. Audacity is a great one for slowing things down though the free program can be cumbersome to use. If you get NI Komplete, Guitar Rig has a variable tempo knob that goes up to 50% i think it was. Just load it as a plugin in your daw, set an in and out point, then crank the tempo knob down.
  5. Wronchi Animation just posted this today. Had to crack up at mei's dance near the end.
  6. I don't know why but I really dig these nostalgic re-releases. It's like walking into the store to buy the system when it's brand new all over again. I would definitely support the Turbografx getting similar treatment!
  7. someone just got serrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrved!
  8. Just played a competitive match where I was able to "snipe" widowmaker with Soldier 76 from halfway across Anubis. and no i didn't use any rockets. Widow isn't really an issue anymore and in mid 40's ranked competitive mode I don't see her used nearly as much as she was in casual. Freaking forward flanking genji's though are the worst. Especially for God Tier Torbs like me. looking forward to seeing Sombra. kinda looks like Tali from Mass Effect but with a cloak.
  9. Just built my monster rig a few months ago. If there's any advice I could give it would be to make getting a Fractal Design Case like the R5 a priority. It makes building the pc a breeze, cable management is practically taken care of for you and the thing runs so silently that the hum of the fridge from 2 rooms over drowns out the fan noise. To avoid problems I use 2 harddrives with a seperate OS on each. i keep my music SSD offline except to update a few programs here or there and use a 2TB HDD for my online endeavors and gaming. Definitely get latencymon to see if anything burdens your CPU and don't install everything that comes with your motherboard. I made that mistake and had to waste time uninstalling a bunch of stuff to decrease the load on the CPU. If you haven't yet definitely watch this video too. It'll give you a picture of what you need to streamline things for yourself.
  10. Going to give this one the benefit of the doubt and say it's (probably) an homage to Soule's work. homages are different from plagiarisms, or so i've been told. Really though, under the statutes of international copyright, this fits under the Japanese interpretation of fair use as implied by this timeless Japanese proverb. "...copy it and make it smaller." (probably)
  11. Messed around with FMDrive and landed on this. Didn't put a ton of focus into getting the notes articulated right but I think it's fairly close. Breakdown of what's used at the end. I was surprised that the rhythm guitar actually made up as much of the total sound as it did. A layered bass was only used as a secondary and was an octave higher than the rhythm guitar. For fun I here it is double tracked
  12. Subbed. Oh, i thought this was the last round.... Now the title i chose isn't going to make any sense!
  13. I use FMdrive as well. Can you post an example on soundcloud of what you have created with it? I can't believe it would be faulty emulation on FMdrive's part because it's extremely close to the original outside of some really minor differences. Metal squad was the title screen so there was no juggling of the chip's maximum polyphony of six voices outside of the song itself. I haven't analyzed thunder force's music yet (no idea why either)but assuming one voice for the other instruments (Kick, Snare, Distant Guitar in the BG, Lead Guitar) then you actually have 2 voices to get that rhythm guitar assuming no juggling for polyphony. Even though something like this would be double tracked to be stylistically correct, I don't think it was in the source to save voices. It does sound extremely narrow for a rhythm guitar. However, I'm guessing what you are hearing is actually the FM bass making up the vast majority of the impression that is that rhythm guitar. In general , the depth of the rhythm guitar is far more dependent on the bass than any metal guitarist would actually have you believe so focus on that and see if it works. I might give this recreation a shot sometime today or tomorrow and see what I can come up with as well.
  14. Ditto to competitions being a great way to practice working to deadlines and producing better quality work in shorter amounts of time. Trying a new instrument can be a great way to reignite things creatively. You can look at music from a whole new perspective with every instrument you are capable of playing. Just keep in mind that each instrument is a serious commitment and you won't be capable of recording anything worthy of being recorded without something halfway decent, a guitar that can hold it's tuning at the very least, and years worth of practice. (you can down that to months worth of practice if you know what you are doing and know what you need). It's also important to remember that if you want to write music you have to want to write music. Every hour of every day. If you're sitting in class or at your job or whatever and just getting home and writing something or trying a new production technique is always the first thing on your mind then you have the drive necessary to accomplish something in this art. If you tend to avoid studio time in favor of other things then maybe creating music isn't for you. Spend your time doing the things you enjoy and don't torture yourself if you lose the drive to do this art.
  15. Looks like you have the best chance of running into Mercenary if you play on Thursdays.
  16. I play Lucio more than Mercy when i support so i can't really verify anything but I have heard some complaining about the changes from teammates. Still waiting to play a game with Mercenary (Matt Mercer who does the voice for Mcree) I hear he does all of his plays in character.
  17. Competitive has been out for a little while and it's definitely going to take Blizzard a little while before they get the ranking system balanced and exploit free. The mode is having a serious rage quitting problem, i've had several matches where someone quit 2 minutes in which usually prompts the entire team to leave as soon as they can. On top of that server crashing exploits that can be used by the losing team to end the game without affecting their ranking are making rounds and completely killing any fun competitive mode could have had. You can't expect perfection right off the bat with these kinds of things but i'm going to give competitive a break until at least season 2 or 3 when blizzard has had a chance to fix some of these issues.
  18. My misunderstanding. I'm looking at Hero Round 2 and even though there are 3 tracks to vote on Touchstone's is still included in the download.
  19. Does RonaldPoe still get his track posted somewhere? Not seeing it in the Round 2 Pack. Is it because you couldn't turn it into an MP3? Whether you win by default or not it's kind of a kick to not have your track heard as part of the compo after working on it all week.
  20. Le Pou's Legion is definitely one of my absolute favorite amp sims. Pairs really well with Hybrit too. What impulse reverbs are you using?
  21. Going to fervently disagree with you on that. Irish and Scottish music in general is intensely dependent on drones whether it's an open string being played along with the melody on a fiddle or guitar or built into the instrument itself. Instruments that defined celtic music also include additions to the instrument specifically for a droning sound to be played against. The infamous Bagpipes and the lesser known Uilleann Pipes are a great example of that. That JBarron included some drones to play against for his remix shows a real interest in this style of music so massive bonus points for that. When you look at it, a drone is nothing less than a pedal point that household names like Beethoven made great, almost sickening use of. In one of his symphonies, i forget which one off the top of my head, he holds a single note pedal point for about as long as this remix is. So really the fact that the cello part is simple doesn't bother me at all. As for the chords, this style of music also requires a lot of emphasis on tonic, dominant and subdominant chords. The guitarist is most likely playing this in DADGAD tuning which means his chord options are far more limited than a guitarist in standard tuning. This would be the case for almost all traditional celtic music because Gsus tuning (DADGAD) is practically standard tuning for that region. So going into something like this you can expect a pretty narrow chord progression. Whether the cello is panned correctly or not depends on what Jbarron is trying to achieve with this. If you are going for an imitation of a completely live performance then the cello can be panned to the side, if not then it would probably be a good call to have it centered. In either case it does need to be de-emphasized a lot more than it is because it's too noticeable. Like the cellist is having a bit of an ego trip and decided he wants to be heard as much as everyone else. Some light LPF'ing on that cello might do the trick too. Any instrument that the audience can take for granted can be pushed a lot lower in volume and still be present. As long as it's not grabbing for attention the panning is a secondary concern. Personally, since another drone is introduced in violin at times throughout the remix I would pair the cello with that. Make sure the volume matches so that one is not overly distracting, then pan one left and the other right for a nice wide double tracked drone. As I continue to listen to it I think there could be a better sorting of the soundscape. Instruments that are clearly in a supporting role are too up front and in the case of the few that are panned it can get distracting. The instrument that takes the lead should have most of the freq spectrum in tact. The supporting instruments that aren't basses can usually take a little lpf'ing to allow them to be heard and yet be heard second to whoever you are putting the spotlight on. Overall though I really like it. Good luck with the album!
