Tropes vs. Women / #GamerGate Conspiracies
Melbu Frahma replied to Brandon Strader's topic in General Discussion
Quoted because it's my thoughts exactly. How much more compelling is it being exposed to the grim realities of, say, warfare in something like Spec Ops: The Line, compared to debating the thing in a vacuum? Of course, nothing can quite match the ability to learn from having lived the experience, but then it'd be incredibly stupid to recommend to someone that they go fight in a war to learn about how war sucks, or go abuse a woman so that they can learn that abusing woman is a bad thing to do. Games, books, movies, television... these provide a safe medium in which we can explore these ideas without ever needing to perpetrate the injustice against a specific individual. It's when we strip these contexts and deeper moral questions from games/book/cinema and start glorifying it that we start to run into potential issues, particularly with the more impressionable members of our society. -
Huh, didn't know we had a Steam group either. Interesting.

New tradition - September is FLOOD MONTH!!
Melbu Frahma replied to djpretzel's topic in Announcements
I like this idea a lot, so long as the natural backlog of the queue makes it make sense. For instance, we have a large backlog now so this is a cool and useful idea, but in two years if the queue is a lot smaller it would hope we'd be able to skip the mixflood September. -
Loved him in Good Will Hunting, Jumanji, Hook, Good Morning Vietnam, and Bicentennial Man (which is a guilty pleasure of mine). We've lost a great talent.

Games that All Children Should Play
Melbu Frahma replied to The Legendary Zoltan's topic in General Discussion
Final Fantasy Tactics. A must. Death matters, it teaches kids to look beyond the surface at the motivations behind the people and wpr;d, and it's not a "rescue the girl because women are love objects game." Arguably it's a "we have to stop these evil people because life matters and every life matters" with a "save your sister" subplot tacked on. FF6 and FF9 should also be required. Chrono Trigger (obvious reasons). The original Sim City. Bastion. Also, any child wishing to play a modern Pokemon game should have to play at least one Gen 1 game and then one Gen 2 game before being allowed to. -
Yeah, I know, but I didn't want to single him out or nothin'. And yes, very understandable. Which, again, in spite of the burning desire I've had to hear this project for 3+ years now, is why I'm okay with waiting a few months longer to hear it.

^ What'd SM64 end up at? Seven years? Trust me, I'm just as anxious as the next guy - and more so than the vast majority - to hear this project. But it'll be done when it's done, and we've just got to trust the director and the remaining remixers will do their best to get it done in a timely manner.

Gotta say, went into this thinking that Drax would be the low point of the movie (because Dave Bautista), and he ended up as my favorite character of them all. Definitely surprised on that account. And I gotta agree, I thought the movie balanced on the knife's edge between comedy and serious dramatic moments, and while it came close to whirling its arms and falling off that knife's edge it never did. I will definitely be seeing it again.

OCR02947 - Final Fantasy Legend II "Gift of the MAGI"
Melbu Frahma replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I will maintain to my dying day that the FF Legend games - particularly FFL 3 - have some of the best music on the system. This Remix is a gorgeous, relaxing example of that fact; I'm a big fan of Argle's music because I never quite know what I'm going to get when I click play on his tracks, and I've yet to be disappointed by anything I've listened to of his. This is a definite listen-to. -
OCR02945 - Donkey Kong Land "Banaqua"
Melbu Frahma replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Congrats on getting a mixflood post, Rexy - I know you were really hoping for one! And man, what a hell of a track to get a mixflood post on. It's a beautifully-worked piece, with a really great "ancient" feel to it that lets you easily get lost in its sound. Well done! -

, by Yoko Kanno, on the Wolf's Rain soundtrack. -
I am super excited for each and every one of these tracks. The Game Boy/GB Color was the only system I had for gaming (besides PC) until I snuck a PS1 into my house when I was 17(ish), so this music is the music of my childhood.
-
Yeah, Ovelia's themes are freaking spectacular.

Doesn't bother me any. And individualism is a good thing. Keep posting with whatever font/color you want, Sonatah. Not that you need my, or anyone else's, permission. Back on topic: I'm actually hoping for a huge increase in the number of stages out of this game more than anything. I'd love to see double or even triple what Brawl had. Just so long as they're not all moving stages....

Antipyretic from Final Fantasy Tactics. Could just partially be the emotional content of the scenes it was tied to, but that track is hands-down one of the most expressive pieces of music of the PS1 era. (in my opinion)

Gotta chime in and agree with Chernabogue. Even small projects - less than ten tracks - usually take a while, and require a significant amount of commitment. Not trying to be a downer, just speaking based on observation and (to a very lesser extent) experience. You should probably consider trying to knock them out one at a time, or at least scale down the scope of them.
-
I would fully support this. And they'd make a decent killing in sales, too. Side note: Looking up the Tales series to see exactly how many games that would make in the compilations made me realize there's about twice as many games in that series as I had previously thought. Sooo... yeah, they definitely need to do this.
-
Yeah, I know, but I've had the idea bouncing around long enough that I needed to get it out of my head one way or another, whatever the result. And that's also part of the reason behind suggesting it be a smaller, almost EP-sized if not EP, sized album - with so many other projects, compos, and collabs going on on the site, I feel like the only way something like this could happen is by making it a smaller, agile, fast-moving album with just a half dozen, eight, ten or so dedicated remixers. Even if you just got a five or six-track offering out of it, I think it'd still be a pretty unique piece of art. Who knows, though? It seems like there's a goodly amount of other projects wrapping up, between SD3, the Game Boy album, and FF9 (or so I've heard), among others. Maybe we'll see some new projects pop up and take center stage. I don't know. I've just always thought it was an interesting theme idea for an album. Also, Argle, I'd be okay with that, too, if it happened. But then, I'm a huge Uematsu fan, so more FF music/remixes is always a plus to me.

You know, I keep thinking that I've surely still got all of the memory cards, surely I still have one of the savefiles... maybe I should just stay up one Friday/Saturday night and knock it out? Someday. Preferably once I'm no longer doing 2 1/2 peoples' worth of jobs at my company/have moved on to a company where I only have one job and can have a decent sleep schedule.
