  1. A remix of an original song, "Shadow Of The Eclispe" (The Lord Gavin Theme Song) was originally done as song for one of my games and was made into six variations for that game too. The song was based off of melody structures reflective of olden-day games and turned out rather good for its purposes in the game. I spent some time a while ago making my own adaptation of the theme and I think it turned out alright. I didn't really have any idea where I was going with this song, so I tried experimenting with a lot of different composition elements to try and achieve something different then from what I normally did. I think I succeeded, to some degree. I'll certainly try my hand at this song again later. It was my first original composition really, so I certainly have more to learn still in terms of this sort of work. Anyway, that's about everything I need to say. Have fun and enjoy. - - - Song: "Lord Gavin's Theme" (Shadow Of The Eclipse) Game: "The Angry Video Game Nerd: Game Over 2" Remixed By: Gavin MacLean Download the remix here!
  2. Been a while since I was here. Anyway, I finished this remix earlier tonight (don't know why I'm still up either) and felt I might as well drop it off over here for any of you to enjoy. I my regards, it's a fun remix. I like it and I accomplished learning/experimenting with what I wanted to achieve in this song. Hopefully, you all like it as well. With that said, enjoy. - - - Song: "Ganondorf's Theme" Game: "Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time" Remix By: Gavin MacLean Midi Basis By: Sirius Download the remix here!
  3. Recently got a request from a fan asking me to make a remix for their fan game. Having been able to succeed in actually making the remix (A.K.A. Having the time and having relatively good luck with, what I expected to be, a hard song to remix), I handed him over this and he was more then happy with it. Personally, I think it's pretty fair remix. The "Thunderbird's Battle Theme" is a really hard song to build from, considering the original song has only 2 instruments and is a loop under 10 seconds long. Still, as I said, I'm happy with how this came out. Comments and critiques of the song are welcome, of course. Above all, enjoy. - - - Song: "Thunderbird Battle Theme" Game: "Zelda II: The Adventure Of Link" Remix By: Gavin MacLean Midi Basis By: John Faraone Request For: YoSniper Download the remix here!
  4. I have no honest idea of what to make of this remix. I mean, I could only find ONE other remix of this song for reference (wasn't very good) and ONE midi for basis (which was so broken, it was almost unusable). I really struggled to come up with this and... well, it's not terrible, but it's nothing too special either. I know there's issues with it and I might return one day to fix it up. As of now, I'm ill-pressed to come up with much better and I'm heading back for third semester schooling today (among other works, per usual for me). Anyway, those are my words. Take the song for what you find it's worth and I hope you enjoy it. Any comments are welcome and encouraged. ... Oh what? It's "Boss Month" on OC Remix? Well that's ironic. Didn't even know. 5. Aye, thanks man. You have been of good help to me in the past, so it's nice to know you're willing to be of such aid. You have a good point with limitations/challenges, as I do similar things when designing games sometimes (as in: Lowering the complexity to a basis of older, or more primitive, styles of gameplay). It would make sense such a thing could pass over into music as well. I also completely agree with proper recharge time. As much of a computer junkie I am, everyone needs a proper break. Again, all good points you bring up. Thanks for your words.
  6. I've been a member, and remixer, for a while now (you can find my works under the label "LGGames Remix" here, on my site, and on YouTube). I tend to prefer an electronic/techno/distortion genre and have been working inside that basis since my beginning. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any knowledge basis or reference that can be helpful to me in either speeding and/or improving my works. In that, I'm wanting to find a resource online somewhere that can grant me direction in composing in this genre. I have no direct aspirations to reach OC acceptance level, but simply an interest in improving my skills enough to satisfy a wide audience. If anyone can pass along anything that may be of some use to me, that is most appreciated. Thanks in advance to anyone that helps. (P.S. If this doesn't belong here, my mistake. If this can be moved elsewhere to better aid me, please feel free to do so.)
  7. Been gone for a while, but I'm still tinkering with songs here and there. I was originally going for a "Shadow Mario Theme" remix with this one, but it just turned into a normal "Underground Theme". Who's to complain though, it still turned out as a decent remix. As usual, comments and critics are welcome. Above all, enjoy. - - - Song: "Underground Theme" Game: "Super Mario Bros." Remixed By: Gavin MacLean Midi Basis By: (Unknown) Listen to the remix here! 8. Aye, and interesting take on the song. Being a fan of mellow music (mainly Celtic variations), this sort of this is something I can enjoy. However, I agree with Strike. The guitar sounds very bad and should be subbed out for another, better sound. Besides that, I can only say that the techno beat that comes in around the time the guitar first does crackles quite a lot and kind of breaks the mellow mood your going for. If you could soften it, or find a better substitute for the sound, I'm sure it would work better. Otherwise, well done. I'd find it hard to do such mellow music right, so good on you for doing it as well as you have.
  9. Alright, but I can't find your song. Could you link the topic to me?

  10. Cool. It's nice to see someone put together something so extensive for reference. Luckily, a lot of what you've talked about either makes good sense to me, or I already understood. Whatever it is I'm doing wrong, I should keep doing that. XD Anyway, you really do need to fix the "ppl" abbreviations in your guide. Honestly, just use the word "people" to avoid the situation of someone not knowing what that means and getting confused. Especially when you're talking about other abbreviations, like DAW, having "ppl" thrown in next to it might make others think "ppl" stands for something music related and not a simple word. That also goes for any other such shortenings you've used that aren't necessary.
  11. I had a request from a fan on my site to do this remix, and considering it's a rather likable song, I decided to go for it. I aimed to capture both an atmospheric and dance-beat style in this song and it seems to have turned out alright. Not my best work, but good enough to call it here. If you have pointers and such, feel free to mention them. Otherwise, enjoy. - - - Song: "Koopa Road" Game: "Super Mario 64" Remixed By: Gavin MacLean Midi Basis By: Daniel Witt Listen to the remix here! Download the remix here!
  12. Ah, always did like this song from the "Paper Mario" series... This is no exception. I do enjoy your remix. I don't know why it breaks into "Bloody Tears" at points, but that's nothing I would care about. Later on though... Damn, the song really does stray from the source though, which I'm not fan of. The original arrangement is good though, so that's not a credible complaint. Quality appears to be there. Allow everyone here to nitpick your remix until it's perfect. It's already far better than most "Shadow Queen Theme" remixes I've found online, so with that having been accomplished, in my mind, you have little left to do but polish to everyone's points, if you really want to take the care in that. Simply put: Well done. Downloading this now.
  13. Well, that took a while to get around to. XP Anyway, I've done my improvements and the song's a lot better now. Not sure if I really nailed any high-points for the song, but with the simple, overall improvement, I'm satisfied enough so to call it finished. If anyone can spot any minor fixed that should be attended to, I'll see about them. More in-depth critics are always welcome, of course. Above all, I hope you enjoy it. - - - Song: "Luigi's Mansion Theme" Game: "Luigi's Mansion" Remixed By: Gavin MacLean Midi Basis By: MetalYoshi and Rachel Feltham Listen to the remix here! 14. Yes, I agree that the song came out too minimal, which is another reason I believe I should experiment around with different sounds and such. As well, I want there to be segments where the song does get "excited". Any ideas on how to achieve that are welcome. And yes, I am a Reason user, to confirm your suspicions.
  15. Still working on this one. I'm sort of happy with the song structure (might add a bit more later on. I'll see), but I'm thinking I need to experiment with different sounds, effects, and drum-beats and such to obtain a better sounding song. Either way, any pointers on what should be changed/add/improved are welcome. It's sounding good so far, I just don't know exactly where to take it from here. My apologies, no listening link, just a download link for this WIP. Final version will have one though. Download the song here!
  16. I'm agreeing with Rozovian. I know the original song quite well, as it was one of my favorites in the GX game. The instruments/sounds you've chosen for this song are quite weak, and for the most part can't emphasize strongly enough the song being remixed. The drums I find unappealing to listen to. You should try and blend them better to the song and/or give them more definition to help drive the song stronger. Beyond that, a lot of the sounds otherwise are... very odd to my ears, and I have a terrible time trying to explain why I do or don't like them. The original song doesn't have much of a melody to work from, so yes it's a hard song to remix. All I can recommend is if you want to make a more energetic or driving song to really push for that, or if you want a calmer, more serine song to go for that instead. Your mix almost sounds like it's right in the middle, and perhaps that's why I'm having troubles really criticizing it. Either way, I recommend really reconsidering what you're trying to accomplish and to reference some songs of the type of song/sound you'd like to aim for in this mix and go from there. Hope any of my words helps.
  17. You're going to have to get used to being ignored at times. I'm also new and find the same happens to me at times, or if I do get help/attention, it's short lived. Anyway, to your mix (version 2). In terms of complexity, the second version does sound better than your first. I wont comment on your quality, as you say you don't have a good studio for remixing (still good enough for the listen though). I know this song well and I can see you don't stray too far from the original, but still retain segments of original solos and additions. I personally don't like original additions in remixes, mainly because they distract from the song being remixed (especially solos). However, you keep the song rooted enough to the original song enough so for it not to really bug me (I believe myself a rare case for what I've just said, as a lot of people here will tell you to keep adding original arrangements, so listen to those points if you wish). The genre you've chosen appears to be a wide blend. There isn't too much of a focus on each genre element in your song, but that doesn't take anything away from it really. Some of the sounds you've chosen I think I quite good, mainly those being the leads for the original song. Again, with your remixing not being great quality, it's hard to nit-pick for "better" sounds since they're all a little bellow the bar. Still, you seem to be grasping the idea of taking a song, remixing it, and adding original segments and alterations enough so to make a good, flowing song. If you really want to take this further, I recommend asking around for other programs to remix with. That may help you a great deal there, if you do so. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry any longer on trying to improve this one song right now. Try your hand at remixing some other songs and come back to this one when you have further understanding and a clear head to start with. Perhaps then, you'll be able to make further improvements that will make a greater difference. Hope my words have helped in any way.
  18. These are hands-down awesomesause! Now, if only someone would make a program that, with a few simple mouse clicks, could make remixes for you. Now THAT would change the world of music forever. XD
  19. A quick back-story, if you are familiar with "The Angry Video Game Nerd", perhaps you know of the fan games featured on his website. I am, in fact, the only person to have multiple features for fan games for both his "AVGN" series and "Board James" series. The latest game I made for him (which has been out since November, actually) was a year long project that I worked on with my musician, Frederic Krassowka. For most of the year, we dabbled in different game designs and musical incorporations until we finally figured out what we wanted. I finished the game in about 4 months and he finished the music in about 2 (we were on a time limit to finish it by that point). Either way, the music in this album was all meant for video game incorporation. For that reason, it reflects song structure similar to games of the 1990's and before (the oldies we know so well), as did the game's gameplay/design. I believe the music was made on the older version of Reason (version 4, I believe), so the quality isn't up to date, but not at all bad. The music genre for the game was an orchestral/electronic form of blend, which worked very well for it in the end. Anyway, that's enough from me. It's recommended that you play the game for the full experience, but if you'd like to simply listen to the music, it comes (though normalized lower in volume) in the game download anyway. - - - If you'd like to directly download the album, click here to do so from MediaFire or RapidShare. 20. Hmm... Well, I'm too recent to even know you, but I'll admit you're really putting yourself out their to get smashed by others with a returning post like this. I also disagree with the OC acceptance judging and criteria and have my reasons for it. I'd be more interested in hearing your reasons over general, personal attacks on their "doucheyness". Concerning your remix here, I'm happy to see it stick closely to the original melody (I dislike the addition of original segments) and I greatly like this theme chosen. However, your song just doesn't seem finished. This sounds like a good basing for a more dynamic remix more so than a finished song. It's like designing a video game with no music or sound: It's lacking luster and you can do more with this to make it something more enjoyable. -Shrugs- I'm being honest. I'm curious as to exactly why you disagree with OC. Perhaps you an I will have some common ground in some of our views. Take my feedback the way you want. Just know that art in any form is never perfect, but abandoned. You'll never please everybody, but so long as you're pleasing enough, you don't need to be concerned with the views of your critics.
  21. You achieved a great mood/atmosphere in this song so far. The sounds used in the background really do add a layer of depth to the whole song, and blend well whenever the chorus fades back into it. The instrument/sound types were all good choices for their purpose and... well, nothing really more to say other than go for finishing the song. I actually was thinking of remixing this song recently, but I had no idea what genre to attempt. I did have the idea of trying something like this... So damn, it would be rather inappropriate to do that now. XD
  22. Most remixes I find of this song are rather good, though each of them retaining their own unique sound in their rendition. Yours is no exception, and it's in a genre I personally like a lot (and remix to). You did a good job keeping the song close to the remixed theme (which I approve of more than the addition of original segments), you've got good quality in your sounds, a good application of distortion that (in my opinion) works well for the song in its application, and you've avoided repetition by breaking the song at the appropriate times in different ways. The only thing I found odd was some of the notes hit were out of pitch, but that may have been because of the distortion or what-not, but that's almost irrelevant since it's hardly noticeable/anything to be concerned with. Good job. This is a very enjoyable remix. Guess I might as well download now before I forget to. XD
  23. Having remixed this song myself a short while back, I had to take a look at your rendition. May I say right off the bat that I have no problem with keeping remixes in "video game context" (I, in fact, prefer it since I have terrible views towards the addition of original segments). I did like your remix (it's hard to dislike this song within any good context), but first I'll touch on what I found doesn't work. The quality wasn't great (mainly for your orchestrated aspects, I find), but that I'm assuming comes from the program you've used. The song does get repetitive without the noticeable (if any) addition of change to the sound of the song makes it a bit dull to listen to for its entire length (I had the same issue with my remix, but it was shorter than yours). Finally, I dislike the drum beat, as it doesn't seem to fit well within the song (at times, not a huge dislike). What I did like was that the instrument choice. Though lacking in quality, it worked well together. I find a techno/techno-blend works well for this song. Same for the ending into a faded "Item Room Theme", that's a very nice and unexpected touch. And if you're interested in my remix, youtube "LGGames Ridley Remix" and you'll find it (otherwise, dig around the forums. It's here somewhere).
  24. Thanks for the list, Rozovian. Should be of some use to me, especially if I fall into a more difficult project. Though your feedback this time isn't directed towards anything in particular, so I'm unable to know what you find wrong with it. Concerning the drums, I actually did beef them up quite a lot, but to blend them better to the song I reverbed them the slightest bit. In doing that, I did notice there strength die a bit, but they had already been so improved upon I didn't realize it wasn't "enough". Whatever, that would be a simple fix.
  25. This remix was actually done a while back. Considering it's age (I was still very new to remixing at the time) I decided to polish it up a bit before uploading it. Either way, take from it what you like. Above all, enjoy. - - - Song: "Brinstar Overgrowth" Game: "Super Metroid" Remix By: Gavin MacLean Midi Basis By: Jay Reichard Listen to it here!
