  1. I was gonna listen to your music, but then I took a signature to the knee...
  2. Bro. I'm gonna keep it short. I'm gonna keep it real. You said you're new at this computer stuff right? Let me lay it out to you like this - in terms of sound quality, production and such, it does reflect you being new. But that's alright - you'll learn as you keep going. As far as arrangement, melody, chord progression etc., bro, I'm liking this man. Sounds like you know some theory, harmony, etc. and basically how to write a song. I commend you for this. Keep it up man, you've just entered the mystical world of music production EDIT: ah shit... cant leave your empty handed... ummm.. tips tips.. tips.. let's see. OK, this may not be the answer you're looking for, and it may seem too general, but honestly, practice makes perfect. Keep working on music each day, even if you only have 20 minutes before you go have to go to your sisters softball game. I don't care, just make time to keep working at music, watch tutorials, read books or check out forums for tips and tricks. Eventually you'll just end up being this boss of a musician and you'll have to warn everyone not to wear socks when they listen to your tunes cuz you'll knock em right off. Results may vary. Cheers, ~Syllix
  3. Done. Ummm.. just as a heads up, I kind of ended up writing a book.... apologies!
  4. I really enjoyed your music for this game Calum! I have a few questions for you that you may hopefully be able to answer for me - will shoot you an email to the one posted on your website's contact page. Keep up the good work ~Syllix
  5. Yeah the pop wasnt bad, it was merely a suggestion. I figured you either didn't know, or you had it in there on purpose. But it sounds like you know what you're doing - by a long stretch As for your other comments, you just need to find some inspiration - it's a good thing there are a kajillion things out there you can find, listen, and explore to get yourself motivated to make music. And you're never too old to make music - I know people who have just STARTED and then are in their mid-late 40's. If you've got the drive, you can make it happen Check this thread out for ways to beat writers block if that's also an issue, but it's pretty much what happens when you're unmotivated and havent found that inspiration. Also, this is a wicked site all around - I';ve learned a lot from it. http://www.idmforums.com/showthread.php?t=99895 ~Syllix
  6. Hey, I'm really liking your music! Currently listening to it while I'm at work, but on $9 headphones. I'll get back to you later this evening with some feedback when I can give it a proper listen on my monitors in my bedroom studio. Edit: After a decent listen, here are a few things I picked out: Bluey green: the first synth that plays, you may want to increase the attack to 2-4ms so you get rid of the "pop" when the first notes are played Doublebluff: I think a thicker, fatter snare would suit the busier parts of the song better. Love the kick though Fancypants: I think this one could use some more glitchy elements, but other than that I liked it The_anvil: I feel if the bass had more of a lead role in this song, it'd really bring things to life. Those are my only critiques, other than that it was an enjoyable listen. How long have you been producing / composing for? I wish more people would create albums that are more focused on that VG music style. Keep it up! ~Syllix
  7. I would give this a shot. I have never done a remix before, but I have remastered 4 sonic songs so maybe that qualifies me as "gud enuff for teh remicks?" :3 ~Syllix
  8. "Heeeeeeeeeeeeey all you cool kids out there, and welcome back to the '2 Hour VG Power' radio broadcast that, you guessed it, fills the mind and tickles your brain with all sounds and music related to video games!! Huzzah!"
  9. Dont think of it as negative motivation man, just think of it as motivation. Period. I personally love it when I complete a song and share it with the world and then get a bunch of "swell - but you could have done this" or "gee willickers, but I think this part needs this..." or even "vomit - go fuck yourself and leave youtube" (this one obviously an immature troll.. haha). But in all seriousness, I take every piece of criticism and look forward to getting better, continuing to put that effort in to make my songs as good as I can so they can be enjoyed by myself and others. Keep working at it dude - we're all in the same boat here. We love making music and we strive to get better at it. Hold your head high - you're only going up from here ~Syllix
  10. Hey, thanks so much for your detailed response. It means a lot to me and I appreciate the time you took to really give some constructive criticism. You're right, the original didn't have much percussion. I layered some percussive sounds I made with my own field recordings. They may be very difficult to pick out, but yes I understand they are rather thin. I agree that better samples, either my own or from somewhere else may help. The swish I do agree is very thin... I believe I cut it at 1500hz, with the super high end accented with an exciter... why did I do this? Ha! I have no idea, but yeah it could be fuller sounding. It sounds tinny because it was a sample from an industrial train yard, probably something metal and struck with a large stick. I stretched it out and loaded it with silververb, but yeah I now realize, although it filled out its part in the song, I could have chosen something better to fill that roll. I kind of understand what you're saying about more juice, but this track was meant to be mellower than the music from it's preceding stage in the game. I am curious about the stereo enhancement you mentioned. Logic has a stereo spread which I've used before, and looking at the goniometer in Logic's multimeter, the overall stereo image looked pretty good to me. Also, a lot of the synths are panned to sound wider. For example, the high square waves that came after the initial intro, are I believe giving the effect of ostinato, where each note alternates from left and right speaker (I believe they were panned -24 and +24. Also the subtle 4th and 5th notes overtop are panned even wider at -48 and +48. I would like to know what kind of instruments, or in what situations you would use stereo enhancement when one is already using different ways of achieving a wider stereo image. If you or anyone could shed some light on this, it would be much appreciated. Lastly, I think I would like to mention that I need to learn how to start keeping things simple. This song had 41 tracks!!! Anyway, I'm glad you liked the tune!! ~Syllix
  11. Hi guys, I'm back again with my last remastered Sonic tune for now. I posted one for Lava Reef Zone 1 a week ago, but it didn't get any replies (probably because it's not a ReMix). The reason I'm doing this is to improve my production skills and ear training (this was not a midi rip). Anyway, like I said, this is my last remastered tune for a while, as I'm moving my focus back to arrangement and composition for my own original songs. I would still like to hear feedback or comments though to see what you guys think. If my production is alright, it's more likely I will do a ReMix next!! Edit: Sorry for not including source. Here it is! SOURCE: My remastered version: Cheers, ~Syllix
  12. Well I'm no storyteller, but first thing that comes to mind is a castle. A bit of a mystery it is, but there is something in one of the towers. It's cold, dark, and raining outside. A lone traveller is seeking what is in this tower.

This puts an image in my head and I can start to think of what kind of music I would put over something like this - sad, dark, melancholy, slower paced, maybe piano and strings... I don't know, I'm really just thinking out loud here. For me I feel it would be easier to put music to a story idea, rather than try to come up with a piece of music and then have the other person listen to it and then write something based on what they hear. There are no rules of course. Anyway let me know what your thoughts are.

  13. read a few pages of this thread... figured i'd add my 2 cents. Anyone here listen to DI.FM (Digitally Imported)? http://www.di.fm/ This is all I ever listen to (I usually surf the Chillout channel mostly (I've even submitted original work)). Also, if anyone here is in university, I recommend their sister channel as well, Sky.fm (non-electronic music (solo piano kicks ass (moar brackets))). I don't bother listening to normal radio, I don't have cable tv... so I'm pretty well-protected from all the shit out there.
  14. Hate seeing posts with 0 replies - I think your plans are spot on with my thoughts - more humanization (if that's what you're going for) and yeah some notes were a little heavy going for a while... some sections there was some distortion but you'll fix that. Overall I enjoyed it. I likes teh piano! ~Syllix
  15. Hey guys! Well... some of you may be wondering, but no this is not a remix. This is my remastered version of Sonic and Knuckles Lava Reef Zone 1. In my spare time when I'm not composing my own music, I like to remaster video game music to work on my ear training (this was not a midi rip, it was all picked out by ear) and production skills. I do plan on ReMixing a video game song at some point, but I have sort of been in a production improvement phase for a while. Anyway, enough of my blabbering. I hope you all enjoy this remastered version, and I welcome feedback and criticism. I'm trying to improve my production skills (can I say it enough?) so please, if you have something to say, good or bad, I'd love to hear it. Cheers! ~Syllix
  16. bahahaha Brandon you son of a gun!! was checking out your ren and stimpy sig when fricken nick cage snuck up on me... you fricken guy you!!! XD
  17. Hey, I was just reading the 2012 resolutions thread and saw that you write stories, screenplays, etc. My friend and I had an idea (he's a writer) to collaborate on a stylistic / short story idea, where he would write a story and I would make music for it, and have the story narrated to create a scene or atmosphere of some sort... just so we could have fun and work on our skills. I'm just wondering if you would be interested in doing anything like this?

  18. lol... re: the dude who posted just before me - does that count as a necropost? How many years must it be? Anyway I saw the word Opeth so naturally I had to make a comment. Saw them in Vancouver just this past October for their Heritage show. Fricken amazing band - Katatonia opened for them.. too much good stuff!!
  19. I'm just laughing at the top comment when I clicked on your link, Branden: "My nipples went hard from listening to this." ...his nipples were right to do so. ~Syllix
  20. Hi all! I thought I'd share with everyone a nice relaxing, ambient track I just finished. If you like it, please share it! Any comments or feedback are most welcome as well. Enjoy! ~Syllix
  21. Hi guys! My friend and I made a little (comedy) Christmas Album EP for fun! There's 3 songs in total so I'm gonna post them here for you guys to have a listen and a laugh! Enjoy! http://soundcloud.com/syllix/jingle-horse http://soundcloud.com/syllix/frosty-that-cold-guy http://soundcloud.com/syllix/that-drummer-boy ~Syllix
